Average.......2005-03-15
OOPS (OH MY)- .....I honestly can't tell if this song is uniquely addictive or the most atrocious song I've ever heard in my life. Very weird use of techno and horns, creating a beat like no other. There are times when I kind of enjoy it-I guess it's fun and a little catchy.....but then it just makes my eardrums bleed. This song will confuse so many people, you won't know what to do with yourself when you hear it. I guess I have to give it a 2, because when you're in the right mood, it's fun, but when you're not, it's really, really bad. It was supposedly overplayed, but I've definitely never heard this song on radio. (2/5)
GET THE PARTY STARTED- One of Pink's best songs ever. Y'all have heard it. (5/5)
WHAT ABOUT US?- I think it's cool Totally Hits includes Brandy's hits. I like Brandy, but this isn't her best. Afrodisiac was a fantastic album-y'all have gotta buy that, but this song is just average. It's too loud and crunchy and weird. You'll understand when you listen to it. It's catchy, though....sort of. (3/5)
7 DAYS- He has a beautiful voice, but what stupid-ass lyrics. (2/5)
YOUNG'N (HOLLA BACK)- Catchy, sort of fun. Not bad, but not fantastic. (3/5)
WHOLE WORLD- Ugh....I remember hearing this on the radio, and it is SUCH an annoying song. It can't hold a candle to "Hey Ya!" (2/5)
EVERYWHERE- Lyrics are so-so, but the beat is infectious. One of Michelle's best songs. Like Alanis, her lyrics are sometimes awkward, but she really has an ear for powerful melodies. (5/5)
WHEREVER YOU WILL GO- Meh, this song was overplayed, and it's too annoyingly countryish. I don't like it. (2/5)
WASTING MY TIME- Kind of the same as the last one, but more rocky. Still generic and nothing special. (3/5)
YOUTH OF THE NATION- This song is so good! Catchy, and anthemic. (5/5)
HANDS CLEAN- Sadly not too big of a hit, but it's a really good song. People argue over the lyrics, but I think it's talking about her falling in love with a man much younger than her. Very catchy, and just a good song. (5/5)
WRONG IMPRESSION- "Torn" was a monster hit just about everywhere, but this single completely, utterly flopped in the U.S.-and I hate to say it, rightfully so. "Torn" was infectiously addictive, while this is only moderately hooky. No one will recognize this song, except maybe residents of the U.K., where this was a very minor hit. (3/5)
STANDING STILL- One of her biggest hits, and a very good song. Catchy, and sweet lyrics. (5/5)
WE FIT TOGETHER- ....Never heard this song before. It's so-so. (3/5)
I LOVE YOU- Mediocre R&B-pop. (2/5)
A WOMAN'S WORTH- .....I'm sorry, but this woman is obscenely overrated. Her first album had only two decent songs, while her second totally sucks.......she's just as hyped up as Usher, but at least Usher has some sexiness and pizzazz and some infectious singles! Her voice is good, but not as stunning as the world makes it out to be (Christina Aguilera's is waaaaaaaaaay better). This song, like all of her music, tries too hard to create a homely, old-school feel but just ends up sounding boring as hell. The only really good recording by Keys is her collaboration with Eve on "Gangsta Lovin." (1/5)
The rest is just average, nothing impressive or standoutish.
All in all, TH has done better.
1st half rocks, 2nd half sucks.......2004-12-04
1. Fat Joe featuring Ashanti- What's Luv A- Nice tune, but wasn't Ja Rule in this?
2. Tweet featuring Missy Elliot- Oops (Oh My) D Annoying, and a little immature. Just skip it.
3. P!NK- Get The Party Started A+ I love this song! But, it's not as good as the Now 9 remix.
4. Brandy- What About Us B+ Good song, but very forgettable.
5. Craig David- 7 Days B- Kinda generic. It's pretty good, but not one of my favs.
6. Fabolous- Young'n (Holla Back) A Ha Ha! Awesome! Still have that song in my head "...holla back young'n woo hoo..."
7. Outkast featuring Killer Mike- Whole World C- Annoying, and one of Outkast's worst yet. Not good. Skip it unless you really like Outkast.
8. Michelle Branch- Everywhere A I love this song, but it was so overplayed.
9. Calling- Wherever You Will Go A+ Very good song. One of my favs of the CD.
10. Default- Wasting My Time A+ WTF? How was this band a one hit wonder? Whatever, great song.
11. P.O.D.- Youth of The Nation C- I don't know why, but I like Slipknot much better than POD. I don't like this song. I always skip.
12. Alanis Morsette- Hands Clean C+ Ok, were getting to the 2nd half of the CD (where Totally Hits puts all of the crappy songs), so I'm not suprised by my last grade or this one. Trust me, anything by Alanis is better than this. Skip.
13. Natilie Imbruglia- Wrong Impression F Not a hit or a good song. Skip.
14. Jewel- Standing Still B+ Very good, but highly outdated. Should have been on TH 2001.
15. O-Town- We Fit Together F Yuck! Boy bands. Skip.
16. Faith Evans- I Love You D- I told you, were getting to the crappiest stuff on this CD. Skip.
17. Alicia Keys- A Woman's Worth D I love Alicia's work, but this is crap and makes no sense whatsoever. Skip.
18. Leann Rimes- Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix) C- I love this song but the remix sucks. Probably skip.
19. Busta Rhymes featuring P. Diddy and Pharrel Willams- Pass The Courvorsier (Remix) D+ Once again, the remix sucks. Skip.
20. Jahiem featuring Next- Anything B- A little break from all of that 2nd half of TH crap. Good song from Jaheim, but not the true best.
Overall Grade C- Ooh, got hit hard with all those crappy 2nd half songs. If they weren't there this would have been a B+. But, the 2nd half crap had to lower the grade. Well, at least TH has been improving over time after TH 03, 04, and 04 vol #2.
Totally Hits 2002 (and late 2001).......2004-10-17
(1) Fat Joe feat. Ashanti "What's Luv?" A. A perfect club and dance track. Impossible not to enjoy and offers perfect collaboration for Fat Joe and Ashanti. The song captures interest right from the opening and Ashanti makes herself known.
(2) Tweet feat. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot "Oops (Oh My)" B+. This is quite a unique song that works well because of its striking beat and sexy lyrics. It's not only a promising debut for Tweet, but also one of the best work's in Missy's career as rapper, writer and producer.
(3) P!NK "Get The Party Started" B+. This was hailed by many as THE best sing of 2001. It's not that good, but it is still an endlessly enjoyable, clubbed up dance track with a combination of a slick production and killer voice and lyrics.
(4) Brandy "What About Us?" A. Brandy's return to music, after a four year hiatus, is an R&B track of energy and fury. Darkchild's awasome production mixed with bold lyrics and a pounding beat make this one of the years best singles.
(5) Craig David "7 Days" B+. The song isn't in the same league as "Fill Me In", but is still very catchy and is a nice little relaxing listen. Craig David finds a relaxed tone to make the song flow efforlessly.
(6) Fabolous "Young'n (Holla Back)" B. Not a great debut single, but one that shows potential. It serves as a prelude to his later work, as we can see a rapper with killer beats, tight lyrics and a club feel in his works.
(7) OutKast feat. Killer Mike & Joi "The Whole World" A-. The new record from thier Greatest Hits album, serves as a nice reminder of why OutKast is one of the greatest groups in rap history. This captures all the funk and fun that is expected when Big Boi and Andre 3000 spit thier biting lyrics.
(8) Michelle Branch "Everywhere" B. Sort of a sacrifice to place her on the music charts. The song is a well done, catchy pop that just lacks the quality and depth of her other works. Still an enjoyable listen in the end though.
(9) The Calling "Wherever You Will Go" A. A terrific rock song that captures weight and dimension with powerful lyrics. The song also serves as a reminder that old material can sound new and good if in the hands of talented artists.
(10) Default "Wasting My Time" B. Enjoyable hard rock that could have been more. The song passes the time pleasantly, but that doesn't change the fact that the material is standard and the guitars don't exactly have grace in their performance.
(11) P.O.D. "Youth Of The Nation" A. Chilling guitar chords and deep lyrics turn this into a haunting track about violence among youg people. All of this is made even more disturbing because we know it happens everyday. I don't even remember the last time I heard a rock song with this much meaning and purpose.
(12) Alanis Morissette "Hands Clean" B+. Alanis still has all the qualities that shocked us back in 1995 and shows no sign of stopping now. This song takes that energy and anger and transfoms it into a lighter, meaningful rock ballad.
(13) Natalie Imbruglia "Wrong Impression" A-. It lacks the power and beauty that "Torn" had, yet still manages to become a quite enjoyable pop record. We've heard many songs about someone being rejected, but this one has content that takes on a new angle with that idea.
(14) Jewel "Standing Still" B-. Has some nice images and Jewel has true passion with her lyrics, yet the song seems rather draged out and never really picks up. It's not a bad song, but one that just doesn't do it for me.
(15) O-Town "We Fit Together" A-. Teen pop (as many call it) can be annoying and repedative, but I don't mind it if its done well like this. The song is fun, catchy and even a little on the naughty side with sexual references.
(16) Faith Evans "I Love You" C. She is just an average singer, and this song was standard on the R&B front back in the 60s. You would expect more considering the people who wrote and produced it.
(17) Alicia Keys "A Woman's Worth" B. A well crafted old feshioned R&B tune, given some new life by Alicia and her talents. Still, you have to wish that the song had ambitions to be more than just a traditional R&B piece.
(18) LeAnn Rimes "Can't Fight The Moonlight" A. LeAnn makes her country to pop transition with ease, grace and alot of style. It may have been made for an average movie, but the song is anything but average. This is a dance tune packed with energy that is absolutly impossible to not enjoy.
(19) Busta Rhymes feat. P. Diddy & Pharrell "Pass Courvoisier Part II" B+. There's no difference between Parts I & II. OK, this is a pretty good club track from some of the best rappers in the industry. It's fun to listen to and is a darn infectious track.
(20) Jaheim feat. Next "Anything" A. A perfect balance of traditional and modern R&B, just like Next's own "Wifey". The lyrics have a sweet touch with a modern edge that is very powerful and deep. This is hands down the best R&B writing of 2002.
Bottom Line: ***1/2. The album is an excellent snap shot of late 2001 and early 2002. Again, it shows just how vibrant those two years were on the music scene and conveys the ever growing diversity of modern music.
My Review For Totally Hits 2002.......2004-06-24

5. 7 Days - Craig David (This is a good song) A+

7. The Whole World - Outkast (I love Outkast and all of their songs) A+

19. Pass the Courvoisier Part II - Busta Rhymes (Nice beat and a good song) A
20. Anything - Jaheim (The words to this song are really sweet. Nice song) A
My review for: Totally Hits 2002.......2004-03-22
1. Fat Joe featuring Ashanti- What's Luv (4/5) I love this jam, but it got overplayed. They could've put the one with Ja Rule instead, even if that one got play on a few stations...
2. Tweet featuring Missy Elliot- Oops (Oh My) (3/5) OK tune... It gets annoying sometimes, but I like it a bit. Doesn't have the best sexual nature to it. Tweet isn't a bad singer though.
3. P!NK- Get The Party Started (5/5) Love this tune, im glad they put the orignal on here! I do like the Sweet Dreams melody of this better, and thats on Now 9, but, this is still awsome. Overplayed.
4. Brandy- What About Us (4/5) I like this song from Brandy, and I think she sounds MUCH more mature than she used to, a more serious voice. I hope she comes back with something new! She hit us again with 2 hits from her latest Afrodasiac! Can't there be any new singles now?
5. Craig David- 7 Days (4/5) I didn't like this much when I 1st heard it, but, it grew on me. Nice, angst-ridden ballad. I have no idea where this guy is now.
6. Fabolous- Young'n (Holla Back) (5/5) My favorite song on the CD! Fabolous at his best. "Holla back, Young'n Hoo Hoo!" The lyrics aren't the greatest, he gets better on
'Breathe'.
7. Outkast featuring Killer Mike- Whole World (3/5) OK song by Outkast, but, it gets VERY annoying often... And, Killer Mike isnt too good on this. The verses aren't that bad, but its their worst song.
8. Michelle Branch- Everywhere (3/5) 1st song by Michelle. OK. It used to get overplayed, though.
9. Calling- Wherever You Will Go (5/5) I love this song, even though it got overplayed. Who cares. This is great. "If I could, then I would, i'll go wherever you will go!"
10. Default- Wasting My Time (5/5) Great song by Default, this didn't get too overplayed. Thanks for producing this, Chad Kroger! Now in the 1-hit wonder genre sadly.
11. P.O.D.- Youth of The Nation (4/5) Good, heavy ballad from P.O.D. I like it when the kids sing later, slightly similar to Another Brick In The Wall by you know who (and its NOT POD for people looking that are idiotic)
12. Alanis Morsette- Hands Clean (2/5) Very boring and annoying song from Alanis. Its OK. Why did they put this though? It was barely anything on the charts!
13. Natilie Imbruglia- Wrong Impression (5/5) Good song, even though she has a very diffrent voice on this than she had on Torn. Awsome tune anyway!
14. Jewel- Standing Still (4/5) This gets boring rarely, but, its nice.
15. O-Town- We Fit Together (4/5) Although this wasnt a hit from them, this is a good O-Town song.
16. Faith Evans- I Love You (4/5) Great love song from Faith Evans.
17. Alicia Keys- A Woman's Worth (1/5) UGH! I dont like this song at all. Worst from Alicia. Its pointless and annoying.
18. Leann Rimes- Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix) (3/5) One of Leean's best, although played out. It got a bit boring. I wonder why they put this on too?
19. Busta Rhymes featuring P. Diddy and Pharrel Willams- Pass The Courvorsier (Remix) (5/5) Awsome, funny song by Busta, and, Pharrel and Diddy are great, too!
20. Jahiem featuring Next- Anything (4/5) Pretty song by Jahiem. But, it got a little played out. I like Next.
So, buy this, NOW! Some tracks are boring, but, its much better than Totally Hits 1! Buy it if you're new to the TH series, although some of the songs will give ya some bores. Some "hits" from late 2001 could've been replaced although.

First half good second half horrible.......2005-04-02
ALL YOU WANTED- Awesome song, very catchy.....this girl has a mysterious talent for mind-blowingly infectious hooks. (5/5)
I NEED A GIRL PART I- This song could be a little more catchy, but it is sweet, soulful and sexy. Usher's warm vocals and Loon's rap are just awesome.....I love it when guys do true love songs instead of sex-driven romps, it is SO SEXY!!!! (4/5)
JUST A FRIEND- Not bad-cute, fun, catchy. (4/5)
U DON'T HAVE TO CALL- Usher is incredible, but this song honestly doesn't impress me.....but OMG the video was so frickin' SEXY it should be a crime....(drooling over shower scene). I love u, Usher, baby, but this is not one of ur best songs. (2/5)
HEAVEN (CANDLELIGHT MIX)- ...........What were they SMOKING not including the original dance version?! This song is still beautifully sung and catchy, but the techno dance version is addictive. Still good, but I'm pretty sure the original dance version was a bigger hit, and, well, it's a better song. (4/5)
FULL MOON- Brandy's best song, in my opinion, is "Afrodisiac," but this is a fun, mid-tempo club groove. (4/5)
AWNAW- ....Not good at all. (1/5)
IF I COULD GO- ...Okay. I prefer the "Not Tonight" remix with Lil' Kim and them. (2/5)
SATELLITE- ...Not my thing. (1/5)
HERE IS GONE- Typical pop-rock....more rock than pop. I just don't like this one that much. (3/5)
GET HERE- My problem with Totally Hits is that it includes far too many minimal and underground hits (I guess because Now claims all the really big smashes)......has ANYONE EVER heard this AI reject on radio....? Yeah, me neither. I would have killed myself if this whiny loser had beaten the great Kelly Clarkson. (0/5)
OUT OF MY HEART- Pretty. Not too bad. (3/5)
ALL EYEZ ON ME- ..Not....too...bad, I guess. She's had better, and Brandy will always be better. (3/5)
The rest of the CD sucks. The first half is great, but the second half is awful. I don't know if this is a worthwhile buy.
More Platinum Hits (or Gold.....or less).......2004-12-03
(1) P!NK "Don't Let Me Get Me" A-. It lacks the stormin' beat of "Get The Party Started", but makes up for it with alot of attitude and a real message. By making songs about HER life, listeners can see some parallels to their own. Celebrity or not.
(2) Michelle Branch "All You Wanted" A. A deep and touching pop/rock song that finds the right impact from the lyrics and guitar chords. Another song that starts with simple material, yet rise far above it.
(3) P.Diddy feat. Usher & Loon "I Need A Girl Part I". A-. For a change from most music, Parts I & II are actually different! Part II may be the more involving one, but this part still has a whole lot of charisma and likability to it. Another entry in for the era of positive hip-hop (almost R&B).
(4) Mario "I Need A Girl 2002" C+. A minor hit that pales in comparison to the original 1989 Biz Markie classic. When Mario decided to remake a hip-hop classic, he had certain requiements to live up to. Shame he doesn't, hopefully his "original" work is better.
(5) Usher "U Don't Have To Call" C. The 3rd single off "8701", and also the weakest one. A good effort that lacks the impact and fun of Usher's other singles. You also expect a bit more from a song Pharrell was attached to. Not nessecary, but still listenable.
(6) DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do "Heaven" B. Decent dance tune, but the song was a hit "limited" to dance fans and never really expanded further. The song has a wonderful beat, but none of the depth that makes artists like Cher and Kylie Minouge so great.
(7) Brandy "Full Moon" C. "What About Us?" was one of the best R&B songs of 2002, while this is below usual Brandy quality. The title promises an interesting song, but the song is everything we've heard before. Is it any wonder this song NEVER became a hit?
(8) Nappy Roots "Awnaw" D. The Nappy Roots take southern rap to an almost redeneck extent, and the result is just not very likeable. This track is standard material with a awful beat and tone to it that appeals to just about no one. Their "shotgun marrige" of country and rap does not work.*
(9) Angie Martinez "If I Could Go" C-. Hip-Hop has many females who are worth a listen (i.e. Eve, Lauryn Hill, Lil' Kim), and Angie Martinez is not in that league. This track tries so hard to be about something that it looses all meaning. Big Pun nearly invented "Latino Hip-Hop", and nothing since then has equaled his masterful body of work. Martinez had better keep her job as a NTC radio DJ.
(10) P.O.D. "Satellite" B. As with most work by P.O.D., the song really is about something with it's worthy material. It just doesn't have the haunting impact that made "Youth Of The Nation" so powerful. There's also the fact that it never charted either; "Alive" was a huge hit and alot more entertaining.
(11) Goo Goo Dolls "Here Is Gone" B+. It may not be "top form Goo Goo Dolls", but is still a worthy return to the charts for the group. The song is laced a polished beat and effective lyrics to make it a terrific rock listen. It's a shame this song didn't catch more attention.
(12) Justin Guarini "Get Here" D+. Of all the "American Idol" winners and runners-up, Justin is the least talented. The original was very good, but this version never has any depth or conviction. Guarini has made a lifeless, stale piece of work that fades from memory within seconds.
(13) BBMAK "Out Of My Heart" B. Even during the "teen pop wave", BBMAK was always shadowed by 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees. They still lack the skills to define themselves, but this is an enjoyable pop/rock track with a nice beat and lyrics. It's good for what it is, but could have been more.
(14) Monica "All Eyez On Me" C+. Same as #7. Monica has had many successful songs, both before and after this. Not bad, but average and lack-luster. Monica has never really expanded as a vocalist over the years.
(15) Clipse "Grindin'" C+. Catchy standard material that became a fairly big hit. Atleast the skill of the artists keep it from being a total waste and offer some talent. Clipse just doesn't have what it takes to stand on their own.
(16) The Hives "Hate To Say I Told You So" B-. The Hives don't break any boundaries, but atleast have some style and attitude. The other problem is that this song will not appeal to everyone because the music is very genre defined. Still, the song is alright for what it is.
(17) The Calling "Adrienne" C+. "Wherever You Will Go" was so powerful, that a follow up was bound to pale in comparison. This is an earnest and honest attempt that doesn't go far enough. In the end, we have a good effort that fails to rise above average.
(18) Donnell Jones "You Know That I Love You" C. Despite some critical praise, Donnell Jones just doesn't do it for me. His material never distinguishes itself and generates very little emotion. This track really needs some of the zest that the best modern R&B songs have.
(19) Boyz II Men "The Color Of Love" B+. Not spectacular R&B, but a beautiful ballad with alot of depth. This track also stands as a testament of why Boyz II Men have been around for over a decade. Their patented sound has inspired many R&B groups from All-4-One to Jagged Edge.
(20) Ian Van Dahl "Castles In The Sky" C-. For starters, this song was NEVER a hit in the U.S., just in England. The other issue is the fact that it goes in circles with the same redundant lyrics. This is a song with no clear purpose and no real message.
Bottom Line: *1/2. I found this album to be a complete disappointment; 2002 was a great year for music, but you couldn't tell it from this album. "Totally Hits 2002" worked very well because it contained the biggest and best tracks, there was hardly anything to quibble over. This album feels like a rough draft: has the right idea, but needs alot of revision.
*NOTE: In the Fall of 2004, Nelly and Tim McGraw did successfully combine rap with country. The song is called "Over and Over" (from Nelly's "Suit" LP) and it is definetly worth a listen.
My Review for: Totally Hits 2002 2.......2004-04-28
1. Pink- Don't Let Me Get Me (4/5) OK song by Pink. I didnt like at 1st, but, its grown on me lots.
2. Michelle Branch- All You Wanted (4/5) Decent Michelle song, but, one of the most overplayed songs of 2002.
3. P. Diddy featuring Usher and Loon- I Need A Girl (Part 1) (5/5) I love this song, but, they couldve used Part 2. Both are awsome!!
4. Mario- Just A Friend 2002 (4/5) A completely different version of Biz Markie's Just a Friend. Cool anywayz. I wonder what happend to Mario, tho. He was good.
5. Usher- You Don't Have To Call (5/5) Another awsome song by Usher! Overplayed in 2002, but, whatever.
6. DJ Sammy & Yanou featuring Do- Heaven (Candlelight Remix) (4/5) A beautiful remix, but, it sounds sadder, and, I like the orignal remake better. I still like this tho.
7. Brandy- Full Moon (5/5) I Love This Song! YOU GO BRANDY! Look for her new album this June.
8. Nappy Roots featuring Jaze Pha- Awnaw (3/5) OK. Not bad, tho. Jaze Pha kinda sounds like hes on 3 different drugs, tho. They couldve put Po Folks with Nappy Roots and Anthony Hamilton instead!
9. Angie Martienaz featuring Lil' Mo and Sacario- If I Could Go (5/5) Awsome. Overplayed in 2002 and 2003, also, but, still love it. Lil Mo does one of the best choruses ever, and, Saciario sounds Jay-Zish, but, he still sounds awsome.
10. P.O.D.- Sattelite (5/5) Not a hit from these guys, VERY sadly, but, an awsome song by POD. They couldve used Alive instead, even if it was old, cuz, it was much more of a hit.
11. Goo Goo Dolls- Here Is Gone (5/5) AWSOME GOO GOO DOLLS SONG!!!!!!!!!!! THEIR 2nd best. Jonny Resnick sounds kinda different at first, but, so what.
12. Justin Guarini- Get Here (3/5) OK. Justin Guarini is pretty good, but, not as good as Kelly Clarkson or Clay Aiken. They couldve used Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This instead.
13. BBMak- Out Of My Heart (Into Your Head) (4/5) Good song from these guys, but, kind of a minor hit. Whyd they switch them from the Now side tho?
14. Monica- All Eyes On Me (5/5) Awsome Monica song. A very minor hit, and, the album All Eyez On Me was canceled, but, luckily, she renamed it After The Storm. Sadly, no All Eyez On Me, tho.
15. Clipse- Grindin (5/5) One of the best on da album. Dope beat. I hope these guys come back soon.
16. Hives- Hate To Say I Told You So (4/5) Hives are ok. Not as good as The Vines, tho. Good song, anyway.
17. Calling- Adrienne (4/5) Pretty good effort by the Calling, but, not as good as Wherever You Will Go. A minor hit.
18. Donnel Jones- You Know That I Love You (5/5) I love slow jams alot, and, this is one of them!
19. Boyz II Men- The Color Of Love (3/5) A very minor hit by these guys. Not that good.
20. Ian Van Dahl- Castles In the Sky (1/5) WHY WAS THIS ON HERE?!! ITS WAY TOO OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONE OF THE WORST SONGS EVER PUT ON A COMPLIATION!!!!!!!!!! F YOU TOTALLY HITS!!
