As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01

I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07

These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20

This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.

My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.

5 out of 5 stars LED ZEPPELIN Collection.......2007-01-10

Simply wonderful. Exactly what I was waiting and hoping for. Excelent package and sound quality.

2 out of 5 stars Worst packaging job ever........2007-01-07

The music in this set is brilliant and is 5 stars all around.

Unfortunately, the packaging for this set is absolutely atrocious. The box itself is pretty cool and even has a little door that slides away into the box (like an old garage door). Inside the box are 6 slots for the photo book/new liner notes and the 5 CD cases. Each CD case is a little hardback book that holds 2 CDs and the recreated liner notes from the original LPs. For example, Led Zeppelin I and Led Zeppelin II are housed in the same hardback book with original liner notes. Unfortunately, if you want to read the liner notes for II, you have to flip the booklet over and start from the back. This is just stupid and the idea should have been shot down at the very beginning as soon as someone realized it would require Presence to come before Physical Graffiti if you wanted to have both discs of PG in the same booklet. The next packaging problem is that the CDs are housed in paper slots inside the booklets. CDs are not meant to be housed in construction paper. It scratches them every time the CDs are removed or replaced. Another stupid thing about this package is that the original cover art is shrunk down to little more than a 2 inch square.

So what we have here is shrunken cover art on booklets that present Led Zeppelin's CDs out-of-order with upside down liner notes and construction paper sleeves that scratch the CDs. This is not exactly the packaging that music of this quality deserves.

The packaging designers for this project should be ashamed of themselves. It might sound silly to harp on about this, but when the boxed set costs as much as this one does, it should be presented in a manner that is attractive, logical, and pays proper tribute to the original LP packaging. And, of course, it should be presented in a way that doesn't scratch up the CDs!

Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). Though Hurt died in 1966, shortly after the last of these sessions, the music still sounds so fresh, you can almost hear the twinkle in his eye. --Don McLeese

That's how you spell chicken!

This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.

He had a great voice. Cool vocals + cool lyrics = really listenable music. I am so greatful to my Yahoo!Music player for introducing me to him. :)

5 out of 5 stars Classic Blues.......2006-02-28

This compilation of Mississippi John Hurt's Vanguard recordings are classics. These albums were recorded in the 60's after he was re-discovered by a music industry full swing into folk, blues, and "old timey" music. The audio quality is superb, the songs are timeless, and the voice is amazing. A must have for any serious blues fan. Robert Johnson is not the end all, be all of delta blues. Check out Mississippi John Hurt.

5 out of 5 stars A review and a question.......2005-12-27

First my review:

The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.

(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.

Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.

Go for it!

And now for my question:

It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.

My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.

5 out of 5 stars John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08

John Hurt is without a doubt my favorite bluesman. His guitar work is seamless. If you'd like to buy some blues for easier listening, get these. Blues is to often absrasive, but all of that disolves in Hurt's world. This music is terminally infectious, and will most certainly carry me to my grave.

5 out of 5 stars All the wheat and not much chaff.......2006-02-20

There's something a bit frustrating about the MCA portion of Nanci Griffith's career. She has a couple of five-star albums to her credit dating to before and after the period covered here, but none from during the MCA era. All four of the albums collected here have some wonderful songs and a few forgettable ones. The good news, though, is that none of the songs are actually bad. Besides, with four albums for less than the price of two, a few weak links are perfectly acceptable.

If any of those four is missing from your collection (and especially if you only have a greatest-hits CD), this is worth picking up. All four of the MCA albums featured at least one great song that hasn't turned up on any of her live albums or compilations. "Lone Star State of Mind," "Never Mind," "Love Wore A Halo," "San Diego Serenade," and "You Made This Love A Teardrop" have all aged just as well as concert staples like "Gulf Coast Highway" or "I Wish It Would Rain" (which are, of course, here as well).

For the completists, there are three previously unreleased (or nearly-unreleased) songs here. Of these, the bouncy "Tumble and Fall" is definitely a keeper, and "Stand Your Ground" is also pretty good. The third, a cover of "Wooden Heart," is just about identical to every other version of that song I've ever heard, so if you liked those, you'll like her version too.

4 out of 5 stars Early Efforts.......2006-02-06

I enjoyed listening to these tracks, but I found Ms. Griffith's later recordings to be much more powerful. In particular, "Last of the True Believers" just blows me away whenever I play it.

This "Complete Recordings" double-CD set is a good value, and anyone who loves Nanci Griffith will appreciate that this appears to be a complete collection of recordings from a period in the artist's life.

5 out of 5 stars A Must - Have for Griffith Fans!.......2005-12-02

This is one of the best compilations of her music I've heard - and at a good price to boot! It's a great sampling for new fans and old ones alike - an absolute delight to my ears!

5 out of 5 stars 4 albums for the price of 2. Nanci is brilliant........2004-12-14

This collection includes four complete Nanci Griffith albums: Lone Star State of Mind, Little Love Affairs, Storms, and Late Night Grande Hotel, plus a couple of previously unreleased tracks. They're all very good albums, so this collection is a real bargain. It's not meant as a "best of" collection, but rather four of her albums, in their entirety. I like that, because best-of collections inevitably leave out some really good tracks. I'm a big fan of Nanci Griffith, with her bell-like little-girl voice and tuneful songs. Almost all of these songs are classics in their own right, and anyone who likes Nanci will appreciate them. Newcomers will be won over. Her music is exceptional: melodic, beautifully performed and with obvious emotional involvement. If you already have one or more of the albums, you'll have to weigh the price of getting the rest of them included here as a batch vs. buying them individually. On the other hand, there are a couple of nice bonus tracks not on the albums. If you're just starting a collection of Nanci's music this is a fabulous deal, a wealth of great music for a great price.

Album Description

The original Chico Hamilton Quintet was one of the last significant West Coast jazz bands of the cool era. Consisting of Buddy Collette on reeds (flute, clarinet, alto, and tenor), guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Carson Smith, and the drummer/leader, the most distinctive element in the group's identity was cellist Fred Katz. The band could play quite softly, blending together elements of bop and classical music into their popular sound and occupying their own niche. Most of these performances were formerly quite rare and never reissued before. Highly recommended to jazz historians and to listeners who enjoy classic cool jazz. Packaged in a Digipak. Lone Hill Jazz. 2006.

The Chico Hamilton Quintet sounds as cool and fresh as ever, showing characteristic inventiveness in instrumental textures, rhythm, counterpoint - suave and refined.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz .......2007-03-21

When I was in Collage I listen to a Jazz radio station in Long Beach California. (The Jazz Knob) There was a program called "Sleepy's Hollow" which introduced me to Chico Hamiltion. I then bought this album and many others to follow. Over the years I lost in moving my whole collection of 50's jazz. Now with this purchase I have finally able to enjoy the music of my college days. This smooth jazz features Chico on drums using only the solf mallets. I have never forgotten "Blue Sands" and "My Funny Valentine" and now enjoy them again.

5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Master and his greatest group.......2007-03-09

There have been several Chico Hamilton Quintets, all including wonderful musicians, but to my ears, this is the very best. A young Jim Hall on guitar, Buddy Collette on reeds, Carson Smith originally on bass, Chico on drums and Fred Katz on cello. Cello? Yeah, jazz cello. Soft, understated, melodic and yet hard swinging music all the time. Chico was a great drummer and we all know that Jim Hall became one of the absolute greatest guitarists in the history of jazz. If you love jazz, buy this CD. If you love warm melodic music, buy this CD. If you love fantastic mood music, buy this CD. Okay, just buy this CD. It is one of the great ones.

5 out of 5 stars A great set of tunes.......2007-01-22

I heard an excerpt from this CD on NPR one morning...had to pull over and write down the artist. Ordered it at my first opportunity, and have enjoyed every listening moment. If you like jazz, this is a great choice!

Of all the young lovers smitten by folk music in the '60s, Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker cut the most striking couple, and--as a couple--many of the most striking sides. Over seven Vanguard albums, recorded between 1963 and 1968, Ian & Sylvia lent their vibrato-heavy voices to traditional folk and country songs with strenuous and studied results. However, on indisputably classic Tyson tunes such as "Summer Wages" and "Four Strong Winds," and well-chosen (and, at the time, obscure) ballads by peers such as Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow Is a Long Time") and Steve Gillette ("Darcy Farrow"), their ethereal harmonies and uncluttered acoustic arrangements go a long way towards explaining the duo's popularity and influence. Hard-core fans may frown over the sole previously unreleased track (a toss off called "Je T'aime Marielle"), but they will also cherish Vanguard's sparkling remastering and packaging (a delightfully written appraisal by Colin Escott is included) of this much-needed collection. No better overview of Ian & Sylvia's art can be located. Although you won't find their best album (1970's country-rock gem Great Speckled Bird) here, you will find a cache brimming with the strengths and weaknesses of the folk revival. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars The Best from the the Best.......2007-05-13

Although I already owned all the albums from Vanguard that Ian and Sylvia have produced, I purchased this one as soon as I saw that it was available. Their music was without parallel and with the remastering and clearer cd sound it is well worth the cost to add it to your collection. I know that for many a cd just doesn't compare to the old LP's and to an extent I agree, but to have this much music on just four discs is irresistible. An awesome collection from an awesome pair of singers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Folk Singers.......2006-11-06

2 GREAT voices together in the best 2 part harmony ever. Saw them in person at The Bear in Hunington Beach in 19??. Either solo or together
is great music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Anthology.......2006-10-18

This is a wonderful collection of one of the really great folk groups of the 60s.
Fantastic baritone singing from Ian with soaring harmonies from Sylvia.
In working through the collection one is offered a rather poignant reflection of the separation of their relationship and their music. The latter recordings are sad but subtract nothing from their early achievements.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone with ears.......2006-04-24

What distinguished Ian and Sylvia was a driving respect for music, and Ian strong roots in real Western music, and a musical integrity and ingenuity that surpassed that of most "folksingers" of their period. They never drifted off into the direction of smooth pop oriented singing. There might have been the usual attempt to take them in a "folk rock" direction in the last years they were together, something they did take seriously and made fun of from the stage of their performances in the late 1960s.

However, these recordings have a strength of their commiment to music that has the bite, the twang, the strength, and the snap of real folk music and of folk originated blues and country music. The standards of production particularly their work with the great guitarists Johnny Herald and Monte Dunn, not to mention Ian Tyson's own developing skill with the guitar, and the tastefulness of the ensembles has not been matched since in acoustic music.

Ian and Sylvia's music works now even when the pop folk sensibility that surrounded them has deservedly withered away. I spend a lot of time talking with, playing with, hanging out with people who treasure completely traditional folk music which is not at all what Ian and Sylvia ever pretended to play, although especially at the beginning it was one of their most important sources. I have found even three or four decades after the duo ended, that a tremendous respect and a lot of listening goes on to Ian and Sylvia which is not true for other folkies like Joan Baez or Bob Dylan.

Of course, Ian Tyson continued a great career of his own, longer and actually larger than what happened with Ian and Sylvia as a writer of songs rooted in his Canadian Western origins. The skills unveiled in songs like "You were on my mind" and "Four strong winds" have won Ian a bunch of Grammies and Junos (the Canadian equivalent). He is still out there performing, making great albums and being who he has always been, a straight shooter, a no bs artist.

Sometime in the 1980s, an urban legend appeared that is still strong that Sylvia Fricker had died, killed herself, or otherwise left this life. She is very much alive, still singing, and over the years has done great folk oriented shows for the CBC.

Oh, one thing I forgot.

Aside from all this analysis, Ian and Sylvia are just so darned good that anyone with ears desperately needs to have as much of their music as they can either afford or steal!

5 out of 5 stars Ian & Sylvia - The Real Deal.......2004-03-20

Folk music has been attracting more interest from both ends of the critical spectrum. Vanguard had good reason to reissue this 4 CD set of one of the greatest folk duos of all time. On the other hand some critics have reacted to the recent interest in the period (as indicated by the movie, A Mighty Wind) to poke gentle fun at or write off folk music and its key players as out of date (f ex the Sunday Times of London, which referred to the music of the era as "better left dead and buried" and Ian & Sylvia as "an obscure Canadian folk singing group" ).There's no better way to decide where you are on the divide than to buy this terrific collection and give it the many hours of listening that are due. To be clear, Ian & Sylvia were never part of the Burle Ives, Kingston Trio faux folk scene. They were and always have been, all apologies to the Kerry campaign, the Real Deal. Here's why : the music - a collection of originals from their best albums by both Ian and Sylvia, who continue their excellent songwriting today, traditional songs, covers of Dylan and other artists, and progressive expansions into folk rock and country music, has lasted and it endures. The quality, uniqueness and professionalism of Ian & Sylvia were compelling in its time and continue to captivate listeners globally ; and indeed there are very few duos out there today which have this range or depth in vocals and energy. Since the music itself is primarily traditional, what separates Ian & Sylvia from the rest is their distinctive combination of voices, their sublime harmonies, and their studio work, which was flawless. You can hear a number of these songs by other folk artists, but few of them stick to the mind and soul as these versions do, and their own classics such as "Some Day Soon" and "Four Strong Winds" continue to resonate through their own recordings and those of artists who covered them. This set succeeds in preserving and promoting for the future a powerful legacy of remarkable music which the group's many fans (as can be seen on numerous web sites on the group)and newcomers will appreciate. And if you are interested in what happened since their break up, take a look at Ian Tyson's remarkable career as a country and cowboy song artist starting with his Canadian platinum "Cowboyography" album throuhg the latest "Live at Longview" and Sylvia's work as leader of the all women Canadian group 'Quartet'. The combined work over 40 years including this seminal collection is simple awesome.

4 out of 5 stars A good opportunity for non-fans.......2007-06-20

As a fan of ABBA for many years, of course I had all their releases. For fans like me, the only "new" thing it brings is the Dick Cavett videos (a show that almost all ABBAfans have in VHS - complete! I bought it because my ABBA CDs are the common, simple, cheap versions. I bought it to update my collection, only.

On the other hand, for a person who want to know more about ABBA, and not only the hits, will have here the opportunity of a life. Very complete and well-produced, it's a chance to have the complete works of ABBA at once.

    4 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......2007-05-12

I bought two LPs of this very tight group in the late 60s. Sadly all of them were lost over the years and although I managed to get one of them on CD I looked in vain for the other. This is very good music and the piano playing of Kellaway is delighful. The company that put together this collection is to be congratulated for resurrecting a great jazz quintet. It is a shame that because of "new" jazz and crossover music that these older recordings seem to be neglected by the major US lables. Thankfully a US company called Mosaic puts out limited editions of great jazz that is ignored by Columbia, Sony et al.

    5 out of 5 stars Reissued Classics........2007-02-11

I've challenged myself to write reviews of all of the CDs that I acquire. Unfortunately, I'm about six years behind, and there's little likelihood that I'll catch up. I'm also in a peculiar regressive mode vis à vis what I'm listening to. That means that I'm looking for old jazz that's been out of print for years. The recordings on this Lone Hill Jazz reissue are a great find. I have an LP called "Straight No Chaser"--obscurely issued on Mainstream (MRL320) many years ago; consequently, I had some sense of the collaboration constituted by Terry and Brookmeyer. (Other sweet recordings by Brookmeyer and Gerry Mulligan in this epoch are available through Lone Hill.) This comprehensive collection of Terry/Brookmeyer recordings from the 1961-1965 quintet days is wonderful. I keep saying, "this is a treasure" (ad nauseum), and I'll say it again. The collection is witty, collaborative jazz. It's the work of two men that love what they are doing, and it's fine stuff, indeed.
In some ways, the music is hard to categorize--it's all jazz, of course. And Brookmeyer's valve trombone is exquisite; Clark Terry's trumpet and flugelhorn work is at its peak. Keeping in mind that he was Miles Davis' mentor and model, you can hear many of that icon's antecedents without pretension or self-parody. Clark Terry does it all. As in the famous record with the Oscar Peterson trio, he moves from horn to horn with ease. On some songs Terry switches seamlessly from muted horn to open horn, from trumpet to flugelhorn at will. I'm not sure that I realized what a consummate horn player Clark Terry is until I listened to this two plus hours of playing. Terry and Brookmeyer can replicate the brass section of most big bands by themselves. The pianist on these 28 tracks is Roger Kellaway, joined by Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Crow and Bailey are the rhythm section in the Mulligan/Brookmeyer collaborations as well.
In any case, the best way to describe this collection is "eclectic." There are blues tunes with Terry's characteristic wail and some singing as well as various mumbling presentations of scatting. Then you have sensitive ballads, up tempo bop tunes, close harmonies and contrapuntal spectaculars. Tunes range from Monk songs to variations on them with lots of original tunes. Terry's range is simply phenomenal and he and Brookmeyer apparently loved every minute of these recordings. Many original songs by two living giants of jazz--and they're a lot of fun. If you buy this collection, you won't be sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have........2006-11-10

Clark Terry can be a polarizing figure amongst jazz lovers, but this classic set with Bob is one everyone can agree upon. It is exciting, inventive, and true to the period. Everyone should have at least 1 Clark Terry series, and this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best little groups ever.......2006-01-25

Lane Hauck has it exactly right. Thank your lucky stars these recordings are available again. Just one thing to add - the balance of Terry's wit, Brookmeyer's intellect, and Kellaway's unpredictability give this group a remarkable three-way punch.

    Amazon.com essential recording

There have been many Coltrane compilations and box sets over the years since the saxophonist's passing in 1967, but this eight-CD complete collection of his quartet's studio recordings between 1961 and 1965 is the must-have. Jazz may be a music blessed with dazzling soloists, but few groups in its history seem up to perfectly matching the intentions of their leaders: Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven, Bill Evans's trio of 1960-61, and Miles Davis's mid-60's quintet are among the few that immediately come to mind. Coltrane's quartet of pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison was another, a group so perfectly matched to his playing that it seems difficult to imagine him without them. Tyner, for example, immerses the group in restless chords and showers of single notes; Jones plays with stentorian power, yet tempers his playing with well-etched detail and a strong sense of melody; and Garrison anchors the quartet with drones and deeply rooted vamps. So powerful was the quartet's conception that even when ringers like Art Davis and Roy Haynes turn up on a couple of tracks, they, too, carry out Coltrane's aims, their individual differences worked into the scheme. On the 66 tracks included in this set (all now remastered) it's possible to follow the evolution of this extraordinary band from Coltrane's very ascetic approach on relatively straightforward albums such as Ballads and The John Coltrane Quartet Plays through devotional efforts like A Love Supreme and First Meditations on to Living Space and Sun Ship, those last moments before his leap of faith into the unknown in his last few years.

This quartet's music is marked with a seriousness of purpose that burst the boundaries of jazz, and with a display of authority rare for any music. Yet despite its exploratory passion, it was a music grounded in the blues and the distant memory of swing. Coltrane, always the seeker, had found his kindred spirits and poured himself and all he knew into these performances; and even those who never shared an enthusiasm for his music at least always recognized this much.

The final disc of the set contains seven unreleased tracks, including significantly different versions of "Bessie's Blues" and "Resolution" from A Love Supreme, and others discovered by Ravi Coltrane on his father's original reference records. (For those interested in the culture of the studio, it is fascinating to see that despite its apparent simplicity and the inevitability of its melody, a gem like "Dear Lord" began with the plague of several false starts.) Music spread across 18 albums has been collated and reassembled chronologically here, much of it not always easy to find: examples are the scattered gems "Vilia," "Dear Old Stockholm," and "Big Nick," as well as a version of "Greensleeves," originally issued as an Impulse 45 single. An essential set for understanding jazz at its highest level of achievement. --John Szwed

5 out of 5 stars Great item, but attention!.......2007-04-11

Music on this box set is perfect. I like it, mainly last five cd's. Coltrane's free and soulful jazz is superb. I love his music and his last free jazz" years especially.
I obtain this box set manufactury sealed with seal. But when I had opened this box set some cd's was lightly scratched. Maybe it is for terrible packaging of this set. Problem is to extract cd's from case.
But I already have experience with new factory sealed boxes (from different stores) which included lightly scratches cd's. Especially on Sony/BMG and Atlantic labels (for example Miles Davis box sets or Ornette Coleman set on Atlantic/Rhino). Give attention and verify what you are buying.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, and indispensible.......2007-01-10

Listening to Coltrane and his colleagues evolve from "Greensleeves" in December '61 to the First Meditations sessions in September '65, is to take part in one of the greatest human journeys ever recorded. The music is almost beyond description: dissonant, beautiful, violent, gentle, sad, exuberant -- a passionate and accurate reflection of the human condition.

A warning to the uninitiated: This is NOT "My Favorite Things," or "The Gentle Side." Coltrane is an acquired taste; he pushes the envelope hard and far.

So, should you buy this set? If you already have most or all of these recordings (see other reviews for the list), you probably won't want to spring for it. If you don't have them, however, it's a no-brainer: you'd have to buy (I think) 12 Coltrane albums, and a couple multi-artist compilations (if you can find them), to get all this material.

Want to hear the original albums? Much (but not all) of the information is provided in the suprisingly useful booklet (most reissue notes are mere blather; not so these), so you can rip the music to your player, and create a playlist that gives you the albums as they were issued. True, you're missing the original artwork and liner notes -- you'll have to buy the albums for that.

The package is OK, except for the annoying aluminum sleeve. Why couldn't they put the set in a simple cardboard slipcase?

The bottom line -- this is absolutely the best jazz box I own. It definitely goes to the desert island, perhaps even if nothing else does. John, McCoy, Jimmy, and Elvin: Thank you, and God bless you!

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-09-03

I won't use this space to review the incredible music of the John Coltrane Quartet. Completely unnecessary!

Some reviewers and commentators dislike the presentation of the pieces in the order of their recording rather than organized by albums. I think this is a minor quibble, especially considering that the transition from the LP-era to the CD-era has already "mixed things up" considerably. For example, the modern CD issue of the album "Transition" drops "Dear Lord" and adds two pieces from "Kulu Se Mama." "Dear Lord" shows up on "Dear Old Stockholm," which was not a '60s Coltrane album. "Living Space"-- a current CD-- did not exist then. Some Coltrane pieces ("Vilia" and "Dear Old Stockholm") were released on contemporary albums featuring numerous artists ("The Definitive Jazz Scene, Vols 1, 2 and 3"). The posthumous albums "The Mastery of John Coltrane, Volumes 1 and 2" do not at all appear on CD-- the pieces were diverted to other CDs. So, putting his works in recording order makes sense to me.

A few albums, such as "Sun Ship," the quartet version of "Meditations" and "A Love Supreme," do appear on this collection with all tracks together.

If you have an iPod and a Mac, you can "recreate" the original albums, in proper track order.

The boxed set is limited to studio recordings performed by the classic quartet (with a few minor allowances at drums and bass), thus two pieces from "Impressions" are missing-- you can find them on the Complete 1961 Village Vanguard set--and only two pieces from "Live at Birdland" are included, for example "Alabama." I wish they had made another exception and included the title track to the album "Kulu Se Mama," thus bringing that album completely into this set.

I do agree that it is a shame that the album covers and original liner notes are missing. And I am glad that I have the "A Love Supreme" CD separately.

5 out of 5 stars Great for collectors.......2006-03-04

Being a jazz saxophonist and have always been influenced by Coltrane, this box set was worth checking out. Every tune is a gem! Everything from his ballads to Sun Ship and Expression are on here.

If you don't own it already, I would also recommend Coltrane buyers to check out Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings if you're looking for high amounts of Coltrane material.

5 out of 5 stars This one is a no-brainer.......2005-11-16

The question is really, is this worth the money? Yes, it is. In fact, if you are just delving into coltrane for the first time. Don't buy an album, with Trane more than anyone else, there is no definitive album. So save up a little money, and start here. You may SAVE alot of money by starting with this.

Back in 1969, Rod Stewart's résumé included a stint as Jeff Beck's singer. He'd also just joined the Faces, who dropped the "Small" from their name when Stewart and Ron Wood signed on as members. But his husky, graveled rasp shone best that year as he took on covers of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" and Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town" on his solo debut. As this three-CD set thoroughly demonstrates, Stewart was like Joe Cocker in that he crossed boundaries effortlessly, integrating a boozy, acoustic-backed sway with an R&B churn and creating a new rock sound that captured the fancy of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. He peaked with Every Picture Tells a Story's title track; the folkie, soulful "Maggie May"; and the jaw-dropping "(I Know) I'm Losing You." With those 1971 hits, he arrived full-blown as a sequin-ready superstar. His Mercury period ended in 1974 with Smiler, and this set trails off with that album and five tracks previously unreleased in the U.S. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars The 'Classic' Rod The Mod.......2007-07-13

Before he even dreamed of recording the ill-fated 'Blondes Have More Fun', Rod Stewart was churning out classic after classic. This boxed set captures him at his artistic peak at Mercury Records. It includes tracks like his rendition of the Stones' 'Street Fighting Man', 'You Wear It Well', 'Reason To Believe', and, of course, the unforgettable 'Maggie May'. This boxed set also includes the malignant 'Smiler', but it doesn't mean that the album doesn't rock! Personally, this would be a great buy for me since it also includes unreleased takes and tracks. This boxed set is essential for any rock library or Rod the Mod enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, careless remastering.......2007-02-12

As nice as it is to have all of Rod's Mercury material in one place, I have to agree with the Serbian reviewer below regarding the occasional but noticeable digital "pops" that mar what would otherwise be an excellent remastering job. What's the point of a remastering project if the end product contains obvious, irritating flaws like this? Looks like I'll be ripping the bonus tracks and selling this set off, hanging onto my individual remasters.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Set.......2006-11-28

Mercury packages and repackages songs from Rod's first five albums all the time, usually with little regard for the selections--and they normally come out when he is releasing a new CD (on another label). This set however, is different. This one makes sense, is well packaged and even contains bonus tracks. And at $28 (or so), it's actually a bargain. If you are looking back and want to know about early solo Rod Stewart, this is all you need--it contains his first five solo CDs plus a few singles. Great Stuff. Rod's career went up and down and up and down after this but this is consistently great music. Even the much harassed at the time SMILER sounds good today. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart's best.......2005-11-20

In my opinion these are Rod Stewart's very best songs. This is solid late 60's/early 70's style rock, pervaded by easily discernable blues influences. An excellent mix of musicians and songs to synergize with Stewart's admirably raspy vocals. Later material seems designed more to showcase Stewart's voice, wheras the powerful vocals in these songs are an element of something much bigger. If you are more a fan of the disco influenced "Do ya think I'm sexy," and later works, then you will probably disagree with me on this. I like a few of the later Rod Stewart songs too, but the oldies contained in this box-set are my absolute favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of clicks and pops.......2005-09-07

Many many moons ago I have bought this CD believing that I'll enjoy listening to it completely. But every time I play it, I get an urge to write a proper review about it. Finally, I had to do it and here it is. In spite of the fantastic idea about releasing the complete Mercury studio works on 3 CDs in a deluxe package, there is a matter of a technically incorrect CDs. Along with a great music come a lots of clicks and pops, which (at least where I come from) makes a CD technically incorrect. I don't know how is it possible that no one who was checking that remastering heard that. Well.. assuming that there is someone who's checking that. And then they wonder why people burn CDs...
