As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.
Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20
My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.

Worst packaging job ever........2007-01-07
Unfortunately, the packaging for this set is absolutely atrocious. The box itself is pretty cool and even has a little door that slides away into the box (like an old garage door). Inside the box are 6 slots for the photo book/new liner notes and the 5 CD cases. Each CD case is a little hardback book that holds 2 CDs and the recreated liner notes from the original LPs. For example, Led Zeppelin I and Led Zeppelin II are housed in the same hardback book with original liner notes. Unfortunately, if you want to read the liner notes for II, you have to flip the booklet over and start from the back. This is just stupid and the idea should have been shot down at the very beginning as soon as someone realized it would require Presence to come before Physical Graffiti if you wanted to have both discs of PG in the same booklet. The next packaging problem is that the CDs are housed in paper slots inside the booklets. CDs are not meant to be housed in construction paper. It scratches them every time the CDs are removed or replaced. Another stupid thing about this package is that the original cover art is shrunk down to little more than a 2 inch square.
So what we have here is shrunken cover art on booklets that present Led Zeppelin's CDs out-of-order with upside down liner notes and construction paper sleeves that scratch the CDs. This is not exactly the packaging that music of this quality deserves.
The packaging designers for this project should be ashamed of themselves. It might sound silly to harp on about this, but when the boxed set costs as much as this one does, it should be presented in a manner that is attractive, logical, and pays proper tribute to the original LP packaging. And, of course, it should be presented in a way that doesn't scratch up the CDs!

Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). Though Hurt died in 1966, shortly after the last of these sessions, the music still sounds so fresh, you can almost hear the twinkle in his eye. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

That's how you spell chicken!
This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.
He had a great voice. Cool vocals + cool lyrics = really listenable music. I am so greatful to my Yahoo!Music player for introducing me to him. :)

A review and a question.......2005-12-27
The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.
(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.
Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.
Go for it!
And now for my question:
It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.
My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.
John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08

All the wheat and not much chaff.......2006-02-20
If any of those four is missing from your collection (and especially if you only have a greatest-hits CD), this is worth picking up. All four of the MCA albums featured at least one great song that hasn't turned up on any of her live albums or compilations. "Lone Star State of Mind," "Never Mind," "Love Wore A Halo," "San Diego Serenade," and "You Made This Love A Teardrop" have all aged just as well as concert staples like "Gulf Coast Highway" or "I Wish It Would Rain" (which are, of course, here as well).
For the completists, there are three previously unreleased (or nearly-unreleased) songs here. Of these, the bouncy "Tumble and Fall" is definitely a keeper, and "Stand Your Ground" is also pretty good. The third, a cover of "Wooden Heart," is just about identical to every other version of that song I've ever heard, so if you liked those, you'll like her version too.
Early Efforts.......2006-02-06
This "Complete Recordings" double-CD set is a good value, and anyone who loves Nanci Griffith will appreciate that this appears to be a complete collection of recordings from a period in the artist's life.

Album Description
The original Chico Hamilton Quintet was one of the last significant West Coast jazz bands of the cool era. Consisting of Buddy Collette on reeds (flute, clarinet, alto, and tenor), guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Carson Smith, and the drummer/leader, the most distinctive element in the group's identity was cellist Fred Katz. The band could play quite softly, blending together elements of bop and classical music into their popular sound and occupying their own niche. Most of these performances were formerly quite rare and never reissued before. Highly recommended to jazz historians and to listeners who enjoy classic cool jazz. Packaged in a Digipak. Of all the young lovers smitten by folk music in the '60s, Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker cut the most striking couple, and--as a couple--many of the most striking sides. Over seven Vanguard albums, recorded between 1963 and 1968, Ian & Sylvia lent their vibrato-heavy voices to traditional folk and country songs with strenuous and studied results. However, on indisputably classic Tyson tunes such as "Summer Wages" and "Four Strong Winds," and well-chosen (and, at the time, obscure) ballads by peers such as Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow Is a Long Time") and Steve Gillette ("Darcy Farrow"), their ethereal harmonies and uncluttered acoustic arrangements go a long way towards explaining the duo's popularity and influence. Hard-core fans may frown over the sole previously unreleased track (a toss off called "Je T'aime Marielle"), but they will also cherish Vanguard's sparkling remastering and packaging (a delightfully written appraisal by Colin Escott is included) of this much-needed collection. No better overview of Ian & Sylvia's art can be located. Although you won't find their best album (1970's country-rock gem Great Speckled Bird) here, you will find a cache brimming with the strengths and weaknesses of the folk revival. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
The Best from the the Best.......2007-05-13
Great Folk Singers.......2006-11-06
is great music.
Great Anthology.......2006-10-18
Fantastic baritone singing from Ian with soaring harmonies from Sylvia.
In working through the collection one is offered a rather poignant reflection of the separation of their relationship and their music. The latter recordings are sad but subtract nothing from their early achievements.
For anyone with ears.......2006-04-24
However, these recordings have a strength of their commiment to music that has the bite, the twang, the strength, and the snap of real folk music and of folk originated blues and country music. The standards of production particularly their work with the great guitarists Johnny Herald and Monte Dunn, not to mention Ian Tyson's own developing skill with the guitar, and the tastefulness of the ensembles has not been matched since in acoustic music.
Ian and Sylvia's music works now even when the pop folk sensibility that surrounded them has deservedly withered away. I spend a lot of time talking with, playing with, hanging out with people who treasure completely traditional folk music which is not at all what Ian and Sylvia ever pretended to play, although especially at the beginning it was one of their most important sources. I have found even three or four decades after the duo ended, that a tremendous respect and a lot of listening goes on to Ian and Sylvia which is not true for other folkies like Joan Baez or Bob Dylan.
Of course, Ian Tyson continued a great career of his own, longer and actually larger than what happened with Ian and Sylvia as a writer of songs rooted in his Canadian Western origins. The skills unveiled in songs like "You were on my mind" and "Four strong winds" have won Ian a bunch of Grammies and Junos (the Canadian equivalent). He is still out there performing, making great albums and being who he has always been, a straight shooter, a no bs artist.
Sometime in the 1980s, an urban legend appeared that is still strong that Sylvia Fricker had died, killed herself, or otherwise left this life. She is very much alive, still singing, and over the years has done great folk oriented shows for the CBC.
Oh, one thing I forgot.
Aside from all this analysis, Ian and Sylvia are just so darned good that anyone with ears desperately needs to have as much of their music as they can either afford or steal!

Long Overdue.......2007-05-12
Reissued Classics........2007-02-11
In some ways, the music is hard to categorize--it's all jazz, of course. And Brookmeyer's valve trombone is exquisite; Clark Terry's trumpet and flugelhorn work is at its peak. Keeping in mind that he was Miles Davis' mentor and model, you can hear many of that icon's antecedents without pretension or self-parody. Clark Terry does it all. As in the famous record with the Oscar Peterson trio, he moves from horn to horn with ease. On some songs Terry switches seamlessly from muted horn to open horn, from trumpet to flugelhorn at will. I'm not sure that I realized what a consummate horn player Clark Terry is until I listened to this two plus hours of playing. Terry and Brookmeyer can replicate the brass section of most big bands by themselves. The pianist on these 28 tracks is Roger Kellaway, joined by Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Crow and Bailey are the rhythm section in the Mulligan/Brookmeyer collaborations as well.
In any case, the best way to describe this collection is "eclectic." There are blues tunes with Terry's characteristic wail and some singing as well as various mumbling presentations of scatting. Then you have sensitive ballads, up tempo bop tunes, close harmonies and contrapuntal spectaculars. Tunes range from Monk songs to variations on them with lots of original tunes. Terry's range is simply phenomenal and he and Brookmeyer apparently loved every minute of these recordings. Many original songs by two living giants of jazz--and they're a lot of fun. If you buy this collection, you won't be sorry.

Amazon.com essential recording
There have been many Coltrane compilations and box sets over the years since the saxophonist's passing in 1967, but this eight-CD complete collection of his quartet's studio recordings between 1961 and 1965 is the must-have. Jazz may be a music blessed with dazzling soloists, but few groups in its history seem up to perfectly matching the intentions of their leaders: Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven, Bill Evans's trio of 1960-61, and Miles Davis's mid-60's quintet are among the few that immediately come to mind. Coltrane's quartet of pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison was another, a group so perfectly matched to his playing that it seems difficult to imagine him without them. Tyner, for example, immerses the group in restless chords and showers of single notes; Jones plays with stentorian power, yet tempers his playing with well-etched detail and a strong sense of melody; and Garrison anchors the quartet with drones and deeply rooted vamps. So powerful was the quartet's conception that even when ringers like Art Davis and Roy Haynes turn up on a couple of tracks, they, too, carry out Coltrane's aims, their individual differences worked into the scheme. On the 66 tracks included in this set (all now remastered) it's possible to follow the evolution of this extraordinary band from Coltrane's very ascetic approach on relatively straightforward albums such as Ballads and The John Coltrane Quartet Plays through devotional efforts like A Love Supreme and First Meditations on to Living Space and Sun Ship, those last moments before his leap of faith into the unknown in his last few years. This quartet's music is marked with a seriousness of purpose that burst the boundaries of jazz, and with a display of authority rare for any music. Yet despite its exploratory passion, it was a music grounded in the blues and the distant memory of swing. Coltrane, always the seeker, had found his kindred spirits and poured himself and all he knew into these performances; and even those who never shared an enthusiasm for his music at least always recognized this much.
The final disc of the set contains seven unreleased tracks, including significantly different versions of "Bessie's Blues" and "Resolution" from A Love Supreme, and others discovered by Ravi Coltrane on his father's original reference records. (For those interested in the culture of the studio, it is fascinating to see that despite its apparent simplicity and the inevitability of its melody, a gem like "Dear Lord" began with the plague of several false starts.) Music spread across 18 albums has been collated and reassembled chronologically here, much of it not always easy to find: examples are the scattered gems "Vilia," "Dear Old Stockholm," and "Big Nick," as well as a version of "Greensleeves," originally issued as an Impulse 45 single. An essential set for understanding jazz at its highest level of achievement. --John Szwed
Customer Reviews:
Great item, but attention!.......2007-04-11
I obtain this box set manufactury sealed with seal. But when I had opened this box set some cd's was lightly scratched. Maybe it is for terrible packaging of this set. Problem is to extract cd's from case.
But I already have experience with new factory sealed boxes (from different stores) which included lightly scratches cd's. Especially on Sony/BMG and Atlantic labels (for example Miles Davis box sets or Ornette Coleman set on Atlantic/Rhino). Give attention and verify what you are buying.
Stunning, and indispensible.......2007-01-10
A warning to the uninitiated: This is NOT "My Favorite Things," or "The Gentle Side." Coltrane is an acquired taste; he pushes the envelope hard and far.
So, should you buy this set? If you already have most or all of these recordings (see other reviews for the list), you probably won't want to spring for it. If you don't have them, however, it's a no-brainer: you'd have to buy (I think) 12 Coltrane albums, and a couple multi-artist compilations (if you can find them), to get all this material.
Want to hear the original albums? Much (but not all) of the information is provided in the suprisingly useful booklet (most reissue notes are mere blather; not so these), so you can rip the music to your player, and create a playlist that gives you the albums as they were issued. True, you're missing the original artwork and liner notes -- you'll have to buy the albums for that.
The package is OK, except for the annoying aluminum sleeve. Why couldn't they put the set in a simple cardboard slipcase?
The bottom line -- this is absolutely the best jazz box I own. It definitely goes to the desert island, perhaps even if nothing else does. John, McCoy, Jimmy, and Elvin: Thank you, and God bless you!
Essential.......2006-09-03
Some reviewers and commentators dislike the presentation of the pieces in the order of their recording rather than organized by albums. I think this is a minor quibble, especially considering that the transition from the LP-era to the CD-era has already "mixed things up" considerably. For example, the modern CD issue of the album "Transition" drops "Dear Lord" and adds two pieces from "Kulu Se Mama." "Dear Lord" shows up on "Dear Old Stockholm," which was not a '60s Coltrane album. "Living Space"-- a current CD-- did not exist then. Some Coltrane pieces ("Vilia" and "Dear Old Stockholm") were released on contemporary albums featuring numerous artists ("The Definitive Jazz Scene, Vols 1, 2 and 3"). The posthumous albums "The Mastery of John Coltrane, Volumes 1 and 2" do not at all appear on CD-- the pieces were diverted to other CDs. So, putting his works in recording order makes sense to me.
A few albums, such as "Sun Ship," the quartet version of "Meditations" and "A Love Supreme," do appear on this collection with all tracks together.
If you have an iPod and a Mac, you can "recreate" the original albums, in proper track order.
The boxed set is limited to studio recordings performed by the classic quartet (with a few minor allowances at drums and bass), thus two pieces from "Impressions" are missing-- you can find them on the Complete 1961 Village Vanguard set--and only two pieces from "Live at Birdland" are included, for example "Alabama." I wish they had made another exception and included the title track to the album "Kulu Se Mama," thus bringing that album completely into this set.
I do agree that it is a shame that the album covers and original liner notes are missing. And I am glad that I have the "A Love Supreme" CD separately.
Great for collectors.......2006-03-04
If you don't own it already, I would also recommend Coltrane buyers to check out Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings if you're looking for high amounts of Coltrane material.
This one is a no-brainer.......2005-11-16

Back in 1969, Rod Stewart's résumé included a stint as Jeff Beck's singer. He'd also just joined the Faces, who dropped the "Small" from their name when Stewart and Ron Wood signed on as members. But his husky, graveled rasp shone best that year as he took on covers of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" and Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town" on his solo debut. As this three-CD set thoroughly demonstrates, Stewart was like Joe Cocker in that he crossed boundaries effortlessly, integrating a boozy, acoustic-backed sway with an R&B churn and creating a new rock sound that captured the fancy of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. He peaked with Every Picture Tells a Story's title track; the folkie, soulful "Maggie May"; and the jaw-dropping "(I Know) I'm Losing You." With those 1971 hits, he arrived full-blown as a sequin-ready superstar. His Mercury period ended in 1974 with Smiler, and this set trails off with that album and five tracks previously unreleased in the U.S. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
