Pete Harris, Woman Rock
On sophomore CD Skintalk Martha Redbone...reminds one of classic works such as Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?"

Product Description
Martha Redbone’s sophomore album "SKINTALK" is a powerful, organic soul journey reflecting on social issues, ancient spirituality, the beauty and the complexities of love. The award-winning 'Artist to watch' in New York's underground music scene pays homage to her Native & African American heritage infusing touches of traditional Native music with down-home funk, rhythm & blues. The result? A wonderful blend of roots music of the Americas with forget-me-not melodies and rhythms that just won’t quit.

Backed by her incredible live band and with special guests such as legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker, and American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks, Redbone purrs, belts, whispers and soars over hip shakin’ grooves, Pow-Wow funk, psychedelic gospel and folksy ballads. Her songs, gems of craftsmanship capturing intimate truths and universal feelings, are smart, funny and poignant. With the direct soulfulness and ease of her effortless spirited vocals, from gritty rawness to silky swoops across the octaves, Redbone slots right in among the greatest soul singers of our time.

"With standout tracks like "Talk About It", "Stick Wit Me" and "Future Street", SKINTALK is a fine follow-up to a debut that’s been on high rotation on my iPod for some time."- Pete Harris, WOMANROCK

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic CD.......2006-03-20

The follow up to "Home of the Brave", this incredible artist has hit another home run! This is a very soulful CD with a great deal of variety. Staying true to her native and african american roots, Martha Redbone shows why she is fantastic songwriter and musician. There is also some excellent guitar work on this treat. I found this CD to more in line with traditional R&B than her previous CD, which just shows her amazing versatility. There's something on the CD for everyone. I would suggest one sit back relax and spend some quality time with this quality CD. It's proof positive that music is still alive and some of its best performers are unknown or don't receive ample recognition. that's really too bad because folks are going to miss out on some exceptional talent, and Martha Redbone is just that; an EXCEPTIONAL TALENT!

5 out of 5 stars An instant soul classic for the new millennium........2005-10-25

THANK GOD for young artists like Martha Redbone! You know, it's a shame she doesn't get much exposure (on account of being an independent artist for that matter) because this sophomore set of hers contains the sort of material that should be getting NON-STOP airplay on every FM radio station around! Utilizing a crack live band this time out, the overall vibe of Skintalk is at once inspired, intelligent, and extremely heartfelt. You can play this for people of all ages and backgrounds without having to worry about offending anybody whatsoever. This is also the kind of work that demands repeated listening, for the lyrical content throughout tackles a wide range of thoughts and emotions most people can relate to (particularly in today's trying times). And last, but not least, one can't ignore the sheer power and beauty of Redbone's voice. Funny that she originally didn't consider herself a singer, but I'm glad she got over that notion quickly. She absolutely sounds sensational here, often evoking many R&B/Soul greats of the past like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Anita Baker for example.

Unfortunately, Amazon hasn't readily made available sound samples for this album but do take my word for it: IT'S ONE YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BE WITHOUT!!!!!!
