Editorial Reviews

- Jody Harding
"Hip Hop Hymns is my favorite CD!! I think it's just fantastic !! We use it in outreaches and worship.

Product Description
Hip Hop Hymns is the fastest, easiest, and definitely the most fun way to bring kids and grandparents together in enjoying the greatest songs ever written. There have been a few other attempts to infuse new life into old hymns but none even nearly so successful as Troy&Genie's Hip Hop Hymns. You won't believe how much fun kids and teens have with these ancient, powerful, incredibly meaningful Hip Hop Hymns.

5 out of 5 stars Tough to categorize but..........2007-06-06

still amazing.

This is the canadian "rapper's" third studio release, and he increasingly becomes better with each release. On this trip, the entire album has a feel, whether its the somber "Highway Seven" or the rock-laden "Born To Run". With some much intersection of genres including hip-hop, rock, reggae, and jazz, it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint what exactly you're listening to. K-os does it all, and does it all well. From rapping on the album's opener "Electrik Heat" to crooning on the album's highlight (for me at least) "Highway Seven", he has proven he can hold his own and more in just about any form. This is a highly recommended cd for any fan of...MUSIC. If you like music at all, you should at least listen to this album. Some tracks might not be for you, but you never know until you try. With so much diversity, there's something for everyone on here. 5 stars out of 5, and if you haven't heard his previous releases, especially "Joyful Rebellion", be sure to check those out as well. You won't regret buying this cd from K-os.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting style.......2007-04-03

It reminds me of reggae style beach music. I like it a lot but you need to be in a certain mood to listen to it. Great for long road trips. It put my boyfriend in "stealth mode" as he called it - he was able to concentrate on driving while stil enjoying the K-Os.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite For 07' (So Far).......2007-03-29

I know it's still early in the year but this can easily be my favorite for the year. If you want straight hip hop you might want to look elsewhere but if you enjoy some experimenting of styles and flavor this is the album for you.Overall vibe is very nice on this album because it plays all the way through smoothly. I look forward for more great songs from this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for 2007.......2007-02-27

I have been a K-Os fan since exit, and every album this man, puts out gets better, and better everytime, joyfull rebellon ws genius, now this one Atlantis, is just a masterpiece, i really can't call this Hip Hop album, becuase he ranges from pop, rock, soul, and much more, a lot of emccee from the U.S, can trully learn from this man, and the biggest plus for me is he does not curse, or use th n bomb, so anybody who is ready for a change and wanna hear something besides, the crap you here on the radio, pick up atlantis you will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Another fantastic album.......2007-02-22

K-os continues to define his style without the confines of "traditional" (as the mainstream populace have come to accept) hip-hop. His fusion of styles and genres is a little less unique since the Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business album (which seemed to bring this funky, peppy style into the limelight) but k-os manages to exceed at the style where BEP simply made it popular.

I consider my taste in music "left of the mainstream". I love me some pop, rock, alternative, dance, you name it. I prefer to shy away from super-popular artists because I see the contrivance inherent within those songs. K-os has a realness to his music that transcends genre and is just recognizable as "good". I just bought this album yesterday, and have had a few listens through. I can tell that I will enjoy this more than Joyful Rebellion. Considering the explanation of my tastes, this should be easy to accept. I will admit that his personal emcee talents are better shown through his previous efforts (find his first album if you want the best example) but this album is far more suited to my tastes. At this time it is hard to say which songs are better than the rest because they really all sound fantastic. If albums like this are what 2007 have to offer, I am going to LOVE 2007.

A former member of Teddy Riley's R&B supergroup, Blackstreet, Dave Hollister was recruited by the Def Squad after he decided to make a go of a solo career. Joining up with the Squad gives Hollister a certain amount of street cred, but it also has other benefits--such as getting Squad member Erick Sermon to produce three tracks and Redman to produce another (albeit the intro). With his set of pipes, though--high, pleading, and wrought with emotion--Hollister might not have needed the hook-up. He moves a little fast sometimes, as on "Round & Round," where the backing vocalist is "taking off your clothes" and asking to "sex you from head to toe" before the first verse even starts; on "Came in the Door Pimpin'," the implication is that he's not even willing to wait that long. There's also some sweet doo-wop, though it shows up only on a throw-away interlude ("Cheaterlude"). Overall, the songs don't always live up to Hollister's voice, but he's able to raise even the most mediocre material into something serviceable; hopefully, he won't always have to. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Ghetto Sugar.......2002-08-22

Slow, syrupy and sappy, this is the kind music that gives R&B a bad name. I did kind of like `It's Alright', which is somewhat hymnlike.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful vocals, and raw lyrics express love and heartbreak.......2001-08-17

He is the voice of the Blackstreet hit "Before I Let You Go," but he is also the singer who detailed his "Babymamadrama" in a song.

On his solo debut, Ghetto Hymns, former Blackstreet singer Dave Hollister seems comfort-able singing ballad R&B notes or ghetto hip-hop lyrics.

This album features gospel, pop and rap inspired tracks. Songs such as "I Can't Stay," a powerful ballad, "My Favorite Girl" and a slowed down r&B remake of the Michael McDonald classic "I Keep Forgetting" make this album music to remember.

4 out of 5 stars Deep Down Raw.......2000-11-13

This cd is not for everybody, it is explicit and brutally raw. If that is the mood you are in than this is for you. The lyrics are great to sing and the music feels good down to your toes.

4 out of 5 stars still time for improvement, but overall a pretty good effort.......2000-07-26

overall a good effort, not much that you can say about the man who nobody really knows about. the def squads first and seems to be only rnb talent in the camp comes out strong on his debut.

hollister, a former member of the rnb male quadrant blackstreet, spun solo after there 1994 self-titled effort, to make this album. featuring the smash singles "my favorite girl" & the overally explicit, but fabulous "babymammadramma", show that hollister, plans to stay around for a bit longer.

the rest of the album though really doesnt add up to the success of his singles. "i keep forgetting", "can't stay", & "my favorite girl" (remix) are really good tracks, and i like it.

the rest are just averagae songs, songs that i like, and some that i don't like but overall a really good effort. with just a little bit of improvement, i see this man going far.

5 out of 5 stars TASTE AND SEE!.......2000-06-28

AFTER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD D.H'S ALBUM I WENT OUT THE SAME DAY AND BOUGHT IT. I WAS JUST THAT IMPRESSED. DAVE'S ALBUM FOCUSES ON THE WHOLE RELATIONSHIP SAGA AND ITS SO NICELY DONE. I COMPARE THE ALBUM WITH A NICELY WRITTEN SHORT STORY. THIS ALBUM HAS CHARACTER(S), PLOT, THEME,AND STYLE. SOME OF THE SAME THINGS THAT MAKE A GOOD BOOK GOOD MAKES A AUDIO/NOVEL EVEN BETTER. AND DAVE CAN REALLY SING. GOOD JOB DAVE, YOU GOT A FAN FOR LIFE!

Like Lauryn Hill's Miseducation masterpiece and Bob Marley's Uprising, K-Os's Atlantis: Hymns for Disco flows with a constant emphasis on moving forward with positivity and unity, all within an impossibly funky package. The combination of strong melodies and K-Os's verbal dexterity means that Atlantis is filled with a brilliance that rarely lets up. Opening track "Electrik Heat: The Seekwill" sets the tone by mixing rapid-fire lyrics with '80s hip-hop beats and samples, courtesy of world-renowned turntablist Lil Jaz. K-Os's soul-filled vocals take center stage on "The Rain," with all the smoothness of Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye circa 1966. K-Os could unquestionably release a whole disc of such songs and easily hit world stardom, instead, Atlantis is his vision, and his vision tends towards delivering lyrically insightful, cross-generational hip-hop mixed with reggae and even rock. "Valhalla" is another high point, reminiscent of Bob Dylan's cadence in "Highway 61 Revisited," juxtaposed with a floating chorus courtesy of friend/rocker Sam Roberts. One gets a sense that K-Os and crew have truly brought their top game to this disc, with no words or sounds wasted. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars K-os.......2007-05-14

I am pleased but not impressed. I enjoy the product but not as thoroughly as I enjoyed EXIT. I don't think it flowed as well as EXIT, it was a masterpiece. I still have not gotten Joyious Rebellion but I think it will be more like EXIT. I feel like K-os was experimenting with this one. Nevertheless, I like his vibe and will continue to support his projects.

5 out of 5 stars K-os has more than done again!.......2007-01-05

Buy this album. And all the others.

By his third album, we know and K-os knows that he has a reputation to live up to, so the hype and high expectations made the prospect of a letdown all too conceivable.

I thought that on his 1st album, while his lyrics and delivery were crisp, the production of some of the beats didn't do him justice in some instances. I thoroughly enjoyed his second album, as the music was more on par with K-os' talent.

But what we have here is nothing short of a masterpiece. K-os has definitely managed to create his own sound, but this album is more than that. The music on this album is just a pleasure to listen to; even without the brilliance of Kheaven Brereton, even if you're not into what he brings to the table, this is just good music. The songs here are chock full of instrumental richness.

I love all of the songs on the album, so I can't pinpoint my favourite. But my favourite line of the album would have to be on AquaCityBoy, where K-os raps: "You best respect Canada/In this musical famine/So here's some manna you can't examine!"

K-os has made himself into my favourite artist. I rejoice when he releases an album. Can't wait til for 4th installment!

4 out of 5 stars K-Os- Atlantis: Hymns for Disco.......2006-12-31

Canada's own K-OS (A.K.A. Kevin Brereton, Knowledge of Self) returns with his third solo album "Atlantis: Hymns for Disco" (2006). The award winning rapper, singer, songwriter and producer provides a thirteen track (+ 1 Bonus) release which has guest appearances from Sam Roberts, Kevin Drew & Buck 65. This album came out in October in Canada and will be on sale globally Febuary 2007. My favourite track on this release is the powerful "The Rain" an exceptional joint where K-Os takes his singing to new levels. Another off the hook track is the feel good single "Sunday Morning". The album's biggest collabration has K-OS teaming up with Kevin Drew and Sam Roberts on the fast paced "Valhalla". K-OS sings more on this album then either of his previous releases, on the distinct "CatDiesel" he drops the occasional rhyme. The upbeat "Black-Ice- Hymn For Disco" follows, feeling K-OS melodic chorus on this cut, which is followed up by Slick Rick sounding rhymes. K-OS slows things down for "Highway 7", soulfully singing to God. "Ballad of Noah" has K-OS collabing with fellow Canadian artist Buck 65 for another memorable track. K-OS delivers another great album with "Atlantis: Hymns For Disco" - substantial music that vibes well, don't sleep.

4 out of 5 stars A Totally Different Animal {4.5 Stars}.......2006-12-14

Coming from a purely musical standpoint (instead of a hip hop standpoint), this album is a serious piece of work. If you're expecting the hip hop version of k-os, then proceed with caution. While his past efforts were an equal mix of everything (rock, roots reggae, rap, acoustic, etc...), this album is about the same, but with a lot more rock this time around. Now, I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. I just think the listener should know what he's getting into before he/she runs out to buy what they might think is going to be Joyful Rebellion part two. There are some great songs to be found like "Born To Run", "Highway 7", "Catdiesel", the excellent "Electrick Heat-The Seekwill", and a few others.

There are a few passable tracks here and there. "Flypaper", despite being pretty good, sounds like a rehash of his previous hit, "Crabbuckit." "Born To Run" and "Equalizer" are songs that I tend to skip. Not saying that they are bad, but they don't really grab this particular listener. Those are the only blips I found on my radar. The rest of the album flows smoothly. My last beef is the short running time (13 tracks at just under an hour). It's a minor beef, but k-os is one of the few artists where I actually count the days between releases, I'd appreciate a little more.

Atlantis is definitely one of the few must have 2006 releases, regardless of what genre of music you dig the most. K-Os has a little something for everyone and he continues to deliver his music in a way that's head and shoulders above the music of his contemporaries. I recommend making this one a part of your music library.

Standout Tracks: Highway 7, CatDiesel, Sunday Morning, Electrick Heat - The Seekwill, AquaCity Boy, Mirror In The Sky, Black Ice - Hymn For Disco (My Favorite), and Vallhalla feat. Sam Roberts

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Another consistant album.......2006-12-02

If you liked Exit or Joyful Rebellion by K-os, then there is no reason why you won't like this album. This go round, Kevin sings more and touches more musical genres with his production. I won't say it's better than any of his other albums, but each stands alone in their own identity and evolution. Pick it up, it's music for the soul.

Dave Hollister has surprised the heck out of me with this incredible foray of modern soul and R&B.Ghetto Hymns is incredibly powerful vocally, lyrically, and musically. The whole production is tight, smooth, cool and totally sophisticated. Hollister dishes up food for the soul, and beats for the booty. I'm not going to name them all but faves among the set are "Favorite Girl, Call Me, and Feelin's". Hollister proves himself as a talent with or without Blackstreet. Trust me, this album is special. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Hip Hop Hymns is the fastest, easiest, and definitely the most fun way to bring kids and grandparents together in enjoying the greatest songs ever written. You won't believe how much fun kids and teens have with these ancient, powerful, incredibly meaningful Hip Hop Hymns.

I think that this CD is excellent. My youth choir loves to sing these updated hymns.

4 out of 5 stars Great for children ages 12 and under!.......2005-03-08

This is a good resource for churches who realize the depth and textual content of traditional hymns, while adding a fresh sound that children and pre-teens will enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an album of hymns with (gasp) TEMPO.......2003-11-04

If you're one-half as tired as I am of trying to find a recording of hymns with anything resembling a decent tempo, only to find album after album after album recorded by people who apparently were taking large doses of prescription sedatives, this album is the refreshing change you've been seeking. The hymns are a good selection. (You can see the track list.) The lyrics are virtually unchanged (though some of the language has been modernised, e.g., replacing archaic noun-case forms with the modern equivalents). These are not cheesy knock-off choruses based on the hymns -- many even have their full quota of verses. The basic melody lines are mostly unchanged as well (though there are some rap parts, mainly in the choruses), but the arrangements have been redone, resyncopated, and some of the instrumentation reworked, into a more modern style. If you work with children and are tired of singing inferior songs with less content than the good old hymns, but the typical hymn CDs you find put the kids to sleep, you NEED this album.

The voices on the recording appear to be mostly upper-elementary age (grades 3-6, roughly). The album is probably appropriate for all elementary grades.

5 out of 5 stars HIP HOP HYMNS IS THE BEST HYMNS CD FOR KIDS! :).......2003-07-01

I thought you might want to read a review by someone who actually knows of that which they speak...

My kids love Hip Hop Hymns. I love Hip Hop Hymns. My pastor loves Hip Hop Hymns. My husband even smiles a little bit while it's on.

I know with all my heart that anyone who wishes to share the joy of hymns with their children will have a great time bouncing around with Hip Hop Hymns!

This CD is not a joke, though it does make a good gag gift. That's how I got it - at a White Elephant party. Well what the heck we put the CD on. It was pretty funny to listen to it was that bad. I decided to look it up and amazingly you can still but it! So if you really want to crack up a friend, buy them this CD.

        Album Description

It's time to acknowledge a renaissance in music. It all began with the first song he wrote for this new album, the uplifting first single 'Sunday Morning.' which celebrates the 'next day' as a true time of celebration. The rest of the record is equally eclectic and uplifting. Opener 'Electrick Hea T - the seekwill' is old-school hip-hop, incorporating classic James Brown and Jungle Brothers samples with a booming drum line few electronic squiggles; sonically, it's comes off as the return of Public Enemy's old production crew the Bomb Squad. But 'The Rain' takes on an opposite feeling' it's a sample-free slow jam, more akin to a 50s rock ballad that a hip-hop track. Thanks to K-os' diverse musical paletter(and equally talented back-up band), Atlantis ably dips its toes in a number of genres, including jazzy pop (Flypaper'), Hendrix worthy soul/rock (Equalizer'), Police-style reggae ('Mirror in the Sky') and even loud boisterous guitar anthems (Born to Run,' which takes the brashness of New York's rock scene and blows it up.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Home Run {5 Stars}.......2007-04-19

I've already reviewed the import version of this album, but I only gave it a 4.5 rating. After having this for a few months already, and noticing how often I keep reaching for this 6 months after I got it, I felt I had to rework some things. Personally, the new release buzz wears off somewhere around 3 months for me, but I keep coming back to this album and it continues to grow on me. Therefore, I had to revise this review and give it a rating of 5. The following is a revision of my review for the import:

Coming from a purely musical standpoint (instead of a hip hop standpoint), this album is a serious piece of work. k-os seems to grow with every release and the music gets better with every release because of this growth. While it took me a while to get into a lot of songs from Joyful Rebellion, this album grabbed me from day one. Songs like "Born To Run", "Highway 7", "Sunday Morning", "Catdiesel", "Black Ice - Hymn 4 Disco", "Flypaper", "Ballad Of Noah", and the excellent "Electrick Heat-The Seekwill" are instant classics -- and that's over half of the album (8 of 13). The rest of the tracks, while not instant classics, are still excellent selections as well. You'll be happy to know that there are no fillers on this album -- even the bonus track with it's beatboxing is dope.

The only tracks that I would label as skip material are "The Rain" and "Equalizer" (I'm not feeling the Elvis sample here, but the hook/break is dope). I'm not saying that they are bad songs, because they're not, but they don't really grab this particular listener (well, "Equalizer" does, but not until the halfway mark). Those are the only blips I found on my radar. The rest of the album flows smoothly. My last beef is the short running time (13 tracks at just under an hour). It's a minor beef, but k-os is one of the few artists where I actually count the days between releases, I'd love to get a little more. Oh well.

Atlantis: Hymns For Disco is an excellent release from k-os. Regardless of what genre of music you dig the most, he has a little something for everyone and continues to deliver his music in a way that's head and shoulders above the music of his contemporaries. It may not be Joyful Rebellion or Exit, but it's still an excellent release. I recommend making this one, as well as the rest of his catalog, a part of your music library.

Standout Tracks: Ballad Of Noah feat. Buck 65, Flypaper, Highway 7, CatDiesel, Sunday Morning, Born To Run, Electrick Heat - The Seekwill, AquaCity Boy, Mirror In The Sky, Black Ice - Hymn For Disco (My Favorite), and Vallhalla feat. Sam Roberts
