2 out of 5 stars Not quite there.......2006-02-16

This CD is a great idea, but the execution is just not quite there. It would have been so helpful to have sample tracks on the Amazon site: I would have saved the money. I put it on for my 9 year old son, and after only a few minutes, he asked that I just turn it off. We flipped through the tracks to see if one suited our fancy, but the music here is just not appealing. The words are somewhat clever, but I don't see the reason for pulling in so much bilingual content- we're doing math, not Spanish. The musical style might be good for some, but I dislike the style and the vocals. Pass on this one.
Contrast this to Beethoven's Wig by Richard Perlmutter- On that CD, the very clever lyrics are set to tunes of the masters. The vocals are not stupendous, and the instrumentals are not perfectly polished, but the whole package is so well concieved that it makes up for all of this, and the album is great overall. After all, ordinary musicians with ordinary voices can still produce fabulous results. This is not so with the "Do the math" album.

5 out of 5 stars fifth grade teacher LOVES to "do the math!!!!".......2003-11-17

As an educator of 5th grade students, I have used Mr. Guffee's "Do the Math" CD with my class. They love long division now because they remember the "Goes Into" Family of Dad, Mom, Sister and Brother! We just hit exponents and "You're my exponents baby" is a super memory aid!

4 out of 5 stars great idea!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-09

i have not yet bought this cd but I think that it would be great for my daughter and myself since we are so in love with music. I can learn things much better if it is something that I enjoy. I will try it out and see for myself but i have no doubt that my 9 year old would get a great amount from it.

5 out of 5 stars Memorizing Math Made Musical!.......2001-11-18

If you or your children have had trouble memorizing math concepts, this CD is for you. Providing math concepts in fun and catchy songs, Harry Guffee is a musical genius. I prefer this to other titles by School House Rock, as Do the Math! goes more into depth with mathematical algorithms and formulas as well as ways to help you succeed. Sometimes funny, others serious, Do the Math! is a great addition to any CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Grandmother Says Hooray.......2001-11-14

For Christmas this year, all the children on my gift list, including my two grandkids, will be receiving Harry Guffee's "Do the Math." In fact, I'm going to send it to some adults I know, too, because independent of learning math in a new and fun way, the songs are delightful and catchy for kids and for grown-ups. I particularly love the songs called Circle of Friends and the Guzinta Family. All my life I've been cursed with a math block, and after playing this CD over and over and over, I have actually remembered many math theories I hadn't thought about in years. I can't think of any other CD I own that is so much fun--and educational besides. I can't recommend it enough.

I bought this cd the last time I saw Murder By Death, and it's very good. Granted, most of the MBD songs are from their first record, but the incredible stuff from Volta Do Mar more than made up for it. What an great band. Reminiscent of Rumah Sakit or June of 44.

5 out of 5 stars On nonstop for a while.......2006-01-21

This was repeating nonstop on my player for a while. If you like garage rock and trashy pop punk, you'll like the Pee Chees. Whiny lyrics, crashing guitars, and all the stuff you expect. Doesn't try that hard to be badass, and, thus, it rocks better than your average rock stars. I like that song, Beer City, a lot. It's almost ten years since I was hooked, and it still sticks in my head.

5 out of 5 stars Power to The Peechees.......2000-05-27

The now defunct Peechees are what you'd get if threw Iggy Pop head-first into a blender with The Germs, sprinkled with rebellious ambition, and then pureed for 30 seconds. "Do The Math", The Peechees best album, is everything that scroungy-pop-punk-trash was invented for. It's a fun ride that'll have you whistlin' and doing a jig long after the CD stops. The Peechees may not be the most innovative band in the world, but they certainly can mess your hair up a little.

5 out of 5 stars Out With A Bang... Excellent!!.......2005-10-14

The boys went out with a bang on this final effort. This is now my favorite cd of theirs. Excellent track flow. My friend Lindsay and I would go to all of their shows in Indianapolis whenever they came through. Great and fun/funny guys ...and always an awesome show. To my friends from the windy city - Phil, Tony, Mike, and Jeff - I wish you all the best wherever you go from here. P.S. - I study drums at Berklee now in Boston and still sport my old, red VDM t-shirt.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Hidden Gem.......2007-03-29

Volta do Mar; "return from the sea" in Portuguese is a sailing technique in which you sail in the wrong direction for the purpose of catching better wind, and better yet it is also the name of the Chicago IL instrumental math rock quartet. Aside from the traditional rock band makeup there are two bass players in the band, one playing a 5 string bass and the other playing a 6 string bass. Formed in 1999, the band has released an EP, Split, full length album and a compilation of their earliest and latest studio recordings. At the Speed of Light or Day is the bands first full length album and a brilliant one at that. Incorporating everything from classical guitar to modern and math rock, this album is an absolute hidden gem. Some of the songs on this album are melodic and beautiful others technical and robotic and still some freeform and jammy, all without coming off as pretentious or manufactured. Vocals are also sometimes used throughout the album to accentuate certain segments of songs. Overall their music is innovative and inspiring and at times has reminded me of early 31 Knots (A Word is also a Picture of a Word) and late Don Caballero (American Don) with jam-band accentuations. Any enthusiast of indie/post/math/jam rock will be sure value this priceless hidden gem.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent - but not at all like Soft Machine.......2004-06-23

Bought this albums because of the review below comparing this band to Soft Machine. While this is a superb math rock, in the vein of Don Caballero, Rumah Sakit, etc., there is no similarity between this and the supreme genius of the first three Soft Machine records.

If you like aggressive, instrumental rock music with a lot of layered arpeggios, get it, this is a great record.

5 out of 5 stars these guys are stunning...........2002-07-18

thirty years ago i first heard the soft machine.
the 1st. 3 albums are great but in later releases they morphed more & more into jazz, losing their edge. what does this have to do with volta do mar? i never thought i'd see a band as original as the old soft machine until volta do mar came along. they are innovative & edgy at the same time.
you would think that a band with 2 bass players (5 string & 6 string) would be too bottom heavy, but the real genius of the band is the way the players trade musical phrases with the guitarist, often playing in the higher registers of the basses. to do this, of course, all players must be virtuosos & they are....
highly recommended.
& if you like volta check out soft machine I & II.

5 out of 5 stars Like nothing you've seen........2002-07-06

If your able to hang with brainy music that knows no bounds (think Don Caballero with twice the bass, half the guitar, breakneck changes, and spare vocals from all members) then you'll love these guys, especially live.

5 out of 5 stars amazing amazing amazing.......2002-06-22

This is one of the best albums I have ever come across, it matches elements of everything in my collection and a lot of stuff that I don't have the money to buy. From Sun Ra Orchestra, Phil Glass, Sea n Cake, et cetera. What a great record! I cant wait until they come back to Seattle I saw them at the Croc cafe and I was there with my roommate who wanted to see this other band but they couldn't hold a candle to Volta Do Mar!

5 out of 5 stars DO NOT SLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-13

This album is amazing!!!!!!! I got this when I was in high school and I just thought how dope the Seattle sceene was. Now with acts like Blue Scholars, Boom Bap Project and Common Market, people will finally realize how rich the Hip-Hop sceene is here in Seattle.

When I met Vitamin D and asked him about this album he started telling me stories of how inventive they were when recording the LP. The entire album was recorded on a hand held mic and an ADAT. When he spoke of it, he couldn't belive how he did it and neither could I.

The beats on here have a warm smokey vibe to them... almost as if Da Beatminerz and Prince Paul mixed their production styles together.

If you want to hear what Vitamin D did before he worked with De La, Gift of Gab, Boom Bap etc., COP THIS CD!!! It's worth every penny and if I ever lost my copy, I'd be willing to pay the kind of prices "Operation Doomsday" goes for.

    5 out of 5 stars Do The Math's outstanding........1998-12-18

I've been following the Tribal crew for a while now, and am truly impressed with their musical talents. I recommend this CD to anyone who's tired of the Puffy's of the world.

I bought this album back when the band played a show in my hometown of Marengo, my friend took the band's spare tire, it was a good time. And as for the music, it was top notch, highly innovative instrumental music that put the crappy hardcore bands to shame that night.
