Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Like former Eve's Plum singer Colleen "Vitamin C" Fitzpatrick, Stella "Soleil" Katsoudas has alternative sort-of credibility to live down. To do so, Dirty Little Secret, which follows Katsoudas's work with TRL faves Ministry, Die Warzau, and Chemlab, borrows Fitzpatrick's template for ever-so-slightly edgy pop that's nonetheless kid-friendly in an ever-so-slightly naughty way. Where Vitamin C offered an ode to "Graduation Day," Soleil aims to incite juniors and seniors with "Stand Up," a post-prom theme that firmly posits that the celebrants can stay up all night while implying that nothing riskier than a dance party is on the agenda. Similarly, "Pretty Young Thing" tempers its lust with a marriage proposal, while Soleil's wish for an "Imperfect" boy suggests a yearning for a Josh Hartnett type who just happens to forget to comb his hair sometimes. Even "Angel Face," the sexiest song here, is as PG-rated as a typical episode of Dawson's Creek. All this goes by in a flash of stylistic borrowings from Madonna and Britney (and lest we forget, the Turkish hit here overhauled into "Kiss Kiss"). Dirty Little Secret is hardly built to last, but like its pinup-ready frontwoman, it's well built nonetheless. --Rickey Wright

I have an unhealthy obsession with the all american rejects, but it does not stop me from being honest. Dirty Little secret is an overrated song, which is good but, lets face it, cheesy and slightly annoying. Like most of the nearly-good singles around, this track has been played TOO MANY TIMES!
Swing, Swing will never lose its amazingness soo buy the cd ... you will not be dissappointed if you keep this review in mind.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love The All American Rejects You Will Love This CD :o).......2006-05-17

Love the CD - Bite Back gets *5 stars* and the music video is Awesome to have...
The acoustic version of Swing, Swing sounds a bit whiney and if Tyson were on American Idol I'm alomost cetain Simon would give him a verbal lashing (lol)...

Bite Back is a song sooo great that I still can't understand why it wasn't included in the Move Along album!

The track is worth the price of the cd, but the Dirty Little Secret video is definitely a plus!

This single is a must buy!

Why do you post this exact same message under all of the All American Rejects products? I don't think that you are actually reviewing the product as much as criticizing the fact that it is listed under "Punk Rock". Please, leave the reviewing to people who have actually listened to the music. (And I know, the All American Rejects are nothing like the Sex Pistols.)
This is a really great CD. The All American Rejects just keep getting better!!

After fronting the Squirrel Nut Zippers in the nineties, Katherine Whalen took a turn exploring other genre specific music. With a jazz band, Katherine Whalen's Jazz Squad, she cast herself as a torchy chanteuse, garnering praise, but not a clear sense of her own direction. Now, after a seven year hiatus, she's come back having found her own contemporary voice. From the feverish rhythms of "The Funnest Game" to the majestic Brian Wilson-like title track, the set moves with ease between contrasting settings and styles. And far from making this a disjointed whole, it's Whalen's singing and the sympathetic arrangements by producer David Sale (who also played all of the instruments) that tie the whole thing together. The disc's variety is one of its strengths. Her voice can is as adept fronting a funky number like "You-Who" as it is on the dreamscape lullaby "Blur." --David Greenberger

Album Description

Katharine Whalen, former front-person in the roaring nineties swing band Squirrel Nut Zippers, is planning her return to music following a short hiatus with her first solo album in seven years, "Dirty Little Secret" released on June 6, 2006

Download.com describes the new album thusly: "A luscious array of jazz crooning over trip-hop beats and cabaret sensuality, Katharine Whalen drafts the script for a futuristic burlesque show that never stops. Dizzying and dazzling, Whalen dreams up masterpieces of exotica for decadent nightclubs with her eccentric and seductive charm. Picture the Squirrel Nut Zippers crossed with Portishead, then grab a martini for this mélange of the neurotic and erotic."

1 out of 5 stars You're only as good as your material.......2007-04-30

As a jazz vocalist I think Katherine leaves Norah Jones and Stacey Kent at the starting gate. The range of meanings and insinuations she is able to draw out of the lyrics of good song puts them over the top and makes them great songs. While she works the material on Dirty Little Secrets the material is all sub par and no amount of vocal emoting is going to rescue it. If you don't believe me, please note that second market copies of Jazz Squad (out of print) are going for around $30 while used Dirty Little Secret Cd's can be had for a buck and a half.

2 out of 5 stars Katherine, I'm still waiting..........2007-03-31

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with some of the negative reviews here. That's ok, right? Seems as though negative reviews aren't tolerated very well around here.

I've seen Kat perform live, countless times. I've seen her with the Zippers, and I've seen her with the Jazz Squad. I've danced with her after shows. I positively adore her. She has a vocal talent that is nearly beyond compare - I'm not saying she's the MOST talented, just VERY talented and VERY unique. On much of her work, she's seemed restrained to me, and I've always thought that with proper training she'd be a once-in-a-lifetime talent. I've been waiting so long for another release. What a disappointment.

This album proves that even the most talented voices can't withstand bad production and lousy musicians. I can't recall ever hearing such a muddled mess. What's most disappointing is that there are those out there whose first exposure to Katherine will be this album, and they'll miss out. To those who've not heard her extraordinary talent, I recommend popping over to Andrew Bird's Thrills and checking her out on A Woman's Life and Love.

And then, keep waiting....

5 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to the Curmudgeons This cd rocks!.......2006-06-19

First of all, This is not a cd of Jazz standards or an attemt to emulate Billie Holliday. But an original cd in which Katharine writes on most of the material for her first time! To see the attacks on Katharine for trying to do her own thing is a real shame and should be totaly discounted unless your are an absolute jazz purist, which Katharine is not. Katharines first band was a punk rock band! And to insinuate that Katharine needs a mentor is in my mind a masogonistic statement which I find offesive as a woman. And how Amazon decided to spotlight this extremely biased and narrow minded review is beyond me.

I could tell you how much I like this cd, but you be the judge. I'm sure there will be some more of this pigeon holing, but if you go through the web you will see that there are some pretty amazing reviews and then some like the one I refer, in which Katharine is personally attacked for her choice to try out new things now that she is out from under the thumb of such people.

5 out of 5 stars Red Corvette!.......2006-06-17

This cd reminds me of a huge New Orleans Party, (before Katrina) Bangin horns and beats. Sensual and seductive vocals. It's almost dream like in quality. Katherines singing is a class act, I love her voice. I especially like "Angel" with it's earie and spooky quality. This spins consantly on my ride rotation.

Put the roof down, throw it in gear and cruise!

2 out of 5 stars A Long Wait For A Big Dissapointment.......2006-06-16

From the moment I heard Katherine Whalen sing "Low Down Man" I knew a real jazz talent had come upon us. The only working female singers to be her equal are Norah Jones, Stacey Kent, Diane Krall, and more recently, Anjani. She hadn't released a CD since 1999's Katherine Whalen's Jazz Squad. I waited patiently for Dirty Little Secret. What a let down. A profound disappointment. The warm voice is gone. The mixing is terrible. The background music is loudly out of proportion to her voice. It blares on relentlessly, almost as if she isn't there. Why did such a fine artist put her trust in this producer? Hopefully, she'll find a mentor who will take her back to where she belongs: the smoky, sultry, small group format------and choose vocal material worthy of her talent.

    Album Description

2007 Grammy nominee Andrew Russo rides his supercharged piano into the twenty-first century with fourteen dirty little secrets packed with verve and humor, crankiness and delight, sweat and sarcasm, attitude and acrobatics, power and peril, joy and turbulence, punch and grace-fourteen short masterworks by twelve of today's most relevant composers!

A number of classical albums feature recitals of short 'encore' piano pieces, mostly nienteenth-century trifles. Dirty Little Secret has a similar structure-that is, it is a piano album with many short tracks. However, it reflects both a repertoire and attitude that belong to this century of sound bites, downloads, and the cynical sarcasm of Generation X.

A versatile, prolific artist both onstage and in the recording studio, American pianist Andrew Russo has made a name for himself through his work with many of today's leading composers in the US and Europe. As a recitalist, Russo's programs frequently feature premieres. Trained classically at the Juilliard School and the Hochschule fur Music and Theater Mendelssohn in Leipzig, he pursued further specialized training in Paris with Frederic Chiu. In addition to his extensive solo activities, Russo is a member of the piano/cello/percussion trio Real Quiet, a group much involved in commissioning new music.

"A pianist who knows no limits" -- London Times "Andrew Russo is by no means just `another pianist.'" -- Gramophone

3 out of 5 stars tracks 4-9 make this cd dull............2004-05-02

Stella may have a remarkable voice, kind of a resemblence, what Britney may sound like when she is 30. However, the music on this cd isn't all up to par. I liked "Kiss Kiss" till radio played the hell out of it. The first good song on the cd in my opinion is track 2, "Pretty Young Thing", and then track 3, the heartfilled ballad simply titled "You" is amazing from start to finish, its so calm and pure...then the cd starts to not be so good anymore. Through tracks 4-9, I didn't find a single song that I liked. Track 10 "Look My Way" comes up and the cd is good again for about 4 minutes, this one reminds me of Belinda Carlisle in the 80's, and then the last song "Dance With Me" which shares a similar beat to that of "Unpretty" by TLC is an excellent track.

so unless you want a boring cd that you only like 5 or so out of 12 songs, then its probably not for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-03-11

I bought this CD when it came out, and it's still one of my favorites. All I have to say is this: Where's the next one? I would buy another one of hers, if she just does another one. Please, Stella?!?

    4 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2003-10-21

I heard of Stella Soleil when her remake of Tarkan's "Simarik" came out (aptly titled "Kiss Kiss"). I did not much care for her version, but bought the album nevertheless. I was extremely surprised! "Kiss Kiss" is not a fair representation of the album. The other songs are brilliant! There's not one song on there that I skip. Her voice is wickedly fine and the music has variety. Standout tracks are "Imperfect", "Runaway Crush", "Twilight" and "Angel Face". It's a shame that Stella never took off. So many other tracks could've been singles (and could've been hits too!) If you want something different, give this album a try.

    1 out of 5 stars A Pop Nightmare..........2003-05-15

An immense disappointment considering that her first cd "Drown Me In You" was so brilliantly written and produced with a sound truly her own. As regards to "Dirty Little Secret", there was not a single decent song to be heard, though I tried desparately in vain to like one. If I could have given zero stars I would have. Stella, if you are out there...we miss you!!!

5 out of 5 stars IT'S SHAKIRA CROSS GWEN STEFANI - EXCEPT BETTER.......2003-04-02

Considering that the world has taken Shakira by storm, it's a shame that we (the world) neglect poor Stella Soleil. Her strong ethnic vocals reach it's notes and polishes windows almost. The attractive chrous of "Pretty Young Thing" is a definite radio song... if only radio stations in Australia supported her- she'd be a bomb! Likewise with "You", a suttle, more deeper meaning ballad that screams out #1!!! If you like Shakira, and a twist of Gwen Stefani, I can clearly say you'll be satisfied. She is an artist ready for a worldwide smash--- wait and see!!! Just wait and see!

This band got me hooked, fast. I was unsure about picking it up at first because I always get fooled into buying bad cds that look like they'd be good. Picking this up was not a disappointment. This is not good. This band tried to make every song a hit with some type of hook that the whole song revolves around, but it doesn't work. The lyrics are all things heard before and the music is weak even when turned up to the maximum. I guess they were trying to be like Green Day, but they sound nothing like them, and there's no punk attitude here at all. No wonder these guys totally disappeared from the scene after scoring a minor hit with "Suburbia," the only decent track on this album.

    Album Description

With her newest CD, "Breathing Underwater," Ali Handal continues to explore themes of passion, sex, and the inner battle between fearless independence and the longing for companionship that defines both Ali Handal the person and Ali Handal the recording artist. This album is an acoustic-guitar driven collection of songs, sparsely arranged and produced by Ali and her co-producer Tim Bomba. Ali plays all of the guitars on the CD, and is accompanied by Wes Wehmiller on bass (of touring bands Duran Duran, Missing Persons, Lisa Loeb) & David Leach on percussion (of Ben Harper's Innocent Criminals).

Ali treats the familiar theme of love lost in her uniquely bittersweet way, as well as writing several atypical love songs for various members of her family (although nothing close to her funky feline love song "Indy" from her first CD - there are no sampled cat meows on this whole record!).

Ali's music has been featured both in films and many TV shows, including Sex in the City, Joan of Arcadia, Life As We Know It, Dawson's Creek, and several shows on MTV & VH-1.

I love this CD! Ali Handal is a great songwriter, she has a beautiful voice, and plays a mean guitar. What more could you ask for? Ali does it all and does it very well. So well that I volunteered to be a member of her small but growing Street Team. Ali has since asked me to be the leader of her Street Team, and I graciously accepted. I want to be around Ali when she gets the recognition she deserves and hits the "Big Time." I have also created a fan group on Yahoo and would like to invite each and every one of Ali's fans to join. You can sign-up for the fan group at Ali_Handal-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Also, please sign-up for Ali's Street Team at www.alihandal.com and help promote the best female Indie artist in the country. If you have any questions about the Street Team or the Yahoo group feel free to email me at CHRISZ28@aol.com. And just in case any of you are wondering, no, Ali did not ask me to write this review. I am writing this simply because I love her music and want everyone reading this to buy her CD's and listen to a very talented musician. If you are not a fan of Ali Handal, then you probably haven't heard her mucic.

Who says girls can't play rock guitar? Ali Handal proves those critics wrong! Not only by playing but by writing or co-writing all the tracks on the CD. Tight play and awesome fretwork. Who needs (or would want) all the bleach blonde pop clones out there when we have the real thing right here!

    5 out of 5 stars A killer debut album!.......2001-04-26

Not a weak track on the disk. Straight-forward rockers to grinding funk...playing and production are tight. Exceptionally well-crafted songs; it's a disk you'll listen to over and over.

Ali plays the guitar like she means it, writes lyrics that are intelligent and witty, melodies that stick with you, rhythms you can dance to, and she can raise the roof with the power of her singing!

This a great CD! The music ranges from ballad type stuff to funky to hard edged guitar playing. Every song is good. I totally recommend this CD. I've listened to it many times & still love it.

            Album Description

Los angeles' dirty little secret is pure energy, not only penetrating space, but surpassing the cosmos and becoming an all-encompassing, pulsing, writhing organism existing by means of sexual vigor, creativity, and various chemical reactions that ultimately reaches the point of critical mass and much like a volcano erupts in an aural orgasm. Contrasts in volume, clarity, feedback, melodic structures, pop and innovation form a collage of sounds. A wide array of emotions and textures fills even the largest expanse. 'cabin fever' is their debut album that follows the speak n spell release of their debut self-titled ep in 2004 and showcases a more developed sound.
