Product Description
It's finally happened. College students have produced so many tracks equal to or better than those by professional a cappella groups that a BOCA can rival the best pop/rock pro CDs. Kicking off this killer collection of current music is Brandeis VoiceMale in your face on Robbie Williams' "Let Me Entertain You." The emotional intensity of these songs is immense, from the Evanescence megahit "Bring Me To Life" (sung by Johns Hopkins Octopodes) to the power ballad "Always," to the pair of Tori Amos tunes, "Winter" and "China." The influence of digital production techniques is ever-present; in fact, two producers (Gabe Rutman and Bill Hare) were connected in some way to half of the tracks. And a few of the songs are on the hairy edge of what might be considered a cappella, especially the techno closing track, "Enjoy The Silence." But the creativity of student singers is always the highlight - this is the first BOCA with an original tune, astonishing "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles of UCLA's Awaken A Cappella. This is by far the best BOCA ever, and maybe one of the best contemporary a cappella CDs ever as well!
BOCA 2004 is, in my opinion, the best of the BOCAs. It's fun, energetic and earnest. It's young people making new and exciting music. Although, I have to be honest with you here, and admit that my opinion is probably bias as a previous member of one of the groups on the album.
Quick rundown of my favorites and what makes this CD great:
Let Me Entertain You by VoiceMale is a great opener. Super fun, with a great soloist. If you want more, I would highly recommend the entire VoiceMale album, titled Propeller.
Gravity from UCLA Awaken is actually an original by rising artist Sara Bareilles. She has an amazing warmth to her voice and strikingly smart lyrics.
Kate, a Ben Folds cover is another song where the a cappella version seems to make the song even more fun than the original.
Take Me Home from the Tufts Beelzebubs is predictably amazing. The Bub's are doing something really special with a cappella, check out the rest of their albums, particularly their new one Shedding.
China is a wonderful Tori Amos cover. Emotionally charged and beautiful solo and a truly interesting arrangement of the background vocals.
If you're still interested, I'd also recommend you check out Sing 2, University of Oregon Divisi's Undivided, University of Oregon On the Rocks' Backgammon (talented school), and (a pro group) The House Jacks
