1988 is getting better.......2002-08-10

A lot of new and fickle artits started pooping up by '88. Though not the most concise collection, like '87, it largely survives by compiling one-hit wonders you wouldn't want a full album by, along with a few bigger acts.

Johnny Hates Jazz's monster 'arena-pop' hit "Shattered Dreams", Bobby McFerrin's well-meaning but somehow funny all vocal "Don't Worry Be Happy", Escape Club's serious but still fun rollicking "Wild Wild West" (complete with gunfire) and Will To Power's dance remake of "Baby I Love Your Way" are the examples that hold this together. I like Richard Marx, but the uninteresting ballad "Hold On to the Nights" isn't his best. Cheap Trick's Monster Ballad "The Flame" is hard enough to not be sappy, but it's still emotional. The closest thing to Hair-Metal on here.

Not surprisingly Billy Ocean's up-tempo cruisin' hit "Get Outta My Dreams" is edited, just like all his other songs on this series. Girl group Expose has one of their best with the ballad "Seasons Change." Gloria Estefan's similarly styled "Anything For You" is good every so-often. "Wishing Well" is total R&B filler though.

There were so many great songs from 1988 that were left out of this CD!!!

Worth the money.......2000-08-26

The 1988 Billboard Top Hits album was not one of the better 80s Billboard albums, but it definitely contains some songs to savor. "Wild Wild West" is a great song with a strong message. "Shattered Dreams" and "The Flame" are memorable songs that have their place. And Billy Ocean's "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" is one of my all-time favorite songs. The rest of songs can be discarded as far as I'm concerned, especially Bobby McFerrin's grossly overrated "Don't Worry, Be Happy". I practically scream in pain every time I hear it.
