Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Disney's greatest hits, volum 3.......2007-05-13

This is one of the better volums for kids and for those who are
above 18 but still have some kid in them

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

4 out of 5 stars Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Life CD by Lara Fabian.......2007-01-10

I have been enjoying listening to Lara Fabian's CD because she has a wonderful voice and all the songs are good on this CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars a waste of a true talent..........2006-09-19

Lara Fabian has demonstrated on CD's such as "9" that her voice is unrivaled, and that she has an artist's ability to convey sadness, joy, beauty and pain through her music. She has a rare and intuitive way of making the listener feel as if she has lived every word of every song she has written. When she is at her best, there is simply no one else in her class.

You would never know it, however, from listening to this CD. This is a pop/rock album produced by Sony to appeal to young American fans. The up-tempo pop melodies, accompanied by synthesizers and drum machines drown out her voice and prevent Lara from expressing herself. The delicate beauty, honesty and intimacy that so typifies the other albums that Lara has recorded is missing here.

If you are used to listening to the likes of Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, Hillary Duff, and Britney Spears, then you will no doubt be impressed with this album, as it is certainly a cut above the music that most teenagers enjoy. If you are looking for something more than that, then don't waste your money on this CD.

Buy "Nue" or "9", and allow Lara to cast her spell on you, as she did on me.

5 out of 5 stars THE REVIEW !.......2006-08-30

After listening to this album for more than a 100 times, I think the review worth trusting. So here's the song-by-song review after a general description.

General Description :
Remember this Lara Fabian rule that works on everyone : the voice of Lara Fabian is so much convincing that you will always forget she writes lyrics and composes music ! Her vocal talent is THE key, but also her spirit. This album is pretty different musically from her english debut : it is more acoustic and closer to country-like music.

No big deal : A real good opening, the song is warm and it supports all the wisedome in its lyrics : "Think Im losing the fight, to make sens of it all". The singing gets more powerful as the song reaches its end.

I am : "Take these empty hands, this is all I am." The song is yet more pwerful than the first. The singing is very natural and true. Acoustic guitars are again the dominating instruments.

The last Goodbye : WOW ! I just love how the violon solo takes the first seconds to introduce acoustic guitar with keyboard synth. A very fresh song ! Very catchy and will leave something in ur mind. Dont be mad at it if it keeps on playin in your head all day.

I guessed I loved you (less than I should) : OMG ! A true gem. The 3.30 minutes song is devided in exact 2 parts. The first part is played on piano so soft with header lengend-like voice, so tenderly. She s telling her beloved "Im SORRY, and I want you back", more Im sorry. The starts the second part, orchestral and immensly unbeleivably powerful and stunning, with more "I WANT YOU BACK". I can tell you, if he heard her, he d be right back.

Conquered : Well it's time for some upbeat :) Very nice and lovely. The singing is so sweet and correct ! The song is so "light" abd cheers up.

Review my kisses : She s recorded that song for her debut album, much before Leann Rimes. But never made it to the final tracklisting. Now she's recording it again, more acoustic and easy. 5 minutes od full-time tenderness. Very acoustic and the spirit is there. Remember this song : it will be one of your favorites.

Unbreakable : Wise lyrics, taken from her hard experience with the french press (Who?) who were enough vulgar in critisizing her work (The kind who watch the best concert "but the skirt she wore was aweful, so her voice must be as well"). A little upbeat. "Take another look behind these eyes, it would take right around my heart. I feel, You should know, that Im not unbreakable".

Wonderful life : A sad song, in that phase where you are really sad but you're hoding on to your faith and hopeful. It's a remake. Very beatiful singing.

Intoxicated : She s written its music on her own, I dont beleive it. The first time i heard it, I got sothing from the song. But now I can tell you I wish this song would be half an hour long ! The Power of the voice of Miss Fabian ! Unbeleivable but true. How come she never loses her voice ? Well she simply sings right ! I'd say my favorite song... probably.

I've cried enough : The song starts with Storms effects. It's about faith. the songs ends at minute 3. Then there are 2 minutes with bass guitar and vocals rather than words. Very nice gift and version.

Silence : a 3-minutes song, upbeat. I muchly prefer teh french version. But it s very fresh and I must admit, it totally fits into the album.

Walk away : What a ballad ! It competes with all the best songs. The singing is perfect and sweet. Anyway, it s Walter Afanasief who's written it ! And the guy is good ! The song is so close to perfection. Sung with only an acoustic guitar, with one of the most brillant guitarists in the world "Jean-Felix Lalane".

Finally, from the spirit of this album I recommend the following three albums :

Verspertine - Bjork (experimental has never been so wise)
Lara Fabian - Lara Fabian (remember this name, her songs CANNOT be performed BUT by herself)
Boys for Pele - Tori Amos (Rage + coldes pianos give such a wonderful way to throw away ur inside fires)

1 out of 5 stars Warning: Sony Copy Protected Disc.......2006-07-29

I haven't even listened to this disc yet. Why not? Because it's got that "triangles in circles" copy protection logo on it. And it's from Sony.

So, this disc has a logo on the front that says "SACEM SDRM". I don't _think_ that's the same copy protection that installed a root kit on computers earlier this year. But I'm not sure.

So my stance now is that no CD with that logo on it goes into my computer or stays in my collection. It's sad. I like this artist. But no CDs with this technology on it can be permitted to stay in my house, on the off chance that one of the kids will put it in a computer some day and forget to hold down the shift button. If that happens: Voila, the security of your computer is badly compromised, all in the name of keeping you from doing what you want with music you bought.

Don't let music publishers do that to you. Refuse to buy CDs that are copy protected. I just ordered this from Amazon, it just arrived, and it has this technology on it. I consider it intentionally defective goods. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

Keep in mind this is not a commentary on the quality of the music on this disc. I love Lara's voice and her music. But I'll have to pass on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is more sophisticated, plenty of emotions!!.......2006-07-04

At first I read the review 'WHERE'S THE EMOTION and wondered the same but the I litsened a few more times, this CD has plenty of her REAL emotions there, also they are more mature and not obvious like the first album. It shows that she grew a lot inside and she doesn't release CD just for the money or commercial. That's why there was a long gap between the 1st and 2nd enlish CD. I have to say she reveals more emotion when she sang in french or italian, (she's half belgique and half sicilian after all). These songs are not ballads that she imagine, these are feelings that are related to her heart and she didn't need the vocal gymnastics to express it....

Like Neil Young on the finer moments of Tonight's the Night, Sparklehorse leader Mark Linkous nails the lonesome-man dirge to the wall on this third long-player. Along with his kindred contemporaries (and guest musicians) Mercury Rev and Grandaddy, Linkous makes little secret of his worship for the Neil Young vibe, and he takes it in a direction that Young has never fully realized. It's a Wonderful Life's sweet melodies sound as if they were recorded on corroded tape, with fragility inherent both lyrically and musically; yet this is the least psychotic, and most cohesive Sparklehorse album to date. Linkous and his mates also benefit from appearances by Tom Waits, Cardigans crooner Nina Persson, and the most effectively used guest of all, PJ Harvey, who bites hard on one of the CD's few static rockers, "Piano Fire." Other highlights include the almost-fit-for-radio "King of Nails," the piano ballad "Sea of Teeth," and the hidden bonus track (eight minutes into track 13), "Morning Hollow." Linkous moans on the title track, "I'm a bog of poison frogs / It's a wonderful life / It's a wonderful life." Get the feeling that this might not be for everybody? Thank God for that. --Chris Paul Carter

3 out of 5 stars Nice sounds but..........2007-05-16

Pleasant, but not all that original. The influences motivating this music are too easily discernable. The result is formulaic - albeit a much more complex formula than the vast majority of the drivel that passes for music.

5 out of 5 stars Sparklehorse/Its a Wonderful Life.......2007-02-25

I love this haunting, melancholic album that draws you into a trance of nostalgia that you are unfamiliar with, if that makes any sense. I love the odd lyrics and the tranquil tunes juxtaposed with the rawness of distortion. Even so, the album still remains tranquil, and dreamy. It stimulates not only my sense of hearing, but all the senses with its state of dreaminess.

Its unlike any album that I have, and it has definately made me a Sparklehorse fan.

5 out of 5 stars Really beautiful recording, really beautiful poems, voice, rock, & roll........2007-02-24

This album is soulful, well crafted, and freaking great. It's highly evolved elemental rock and roll. Mark Linkous' vocals are really beautiful and varied on this one. His imagery and themes are developed well. Crazy great harmonies by PJ Harvey and Sophie Michelitsianos break your heart wide open. Yup, freaking great.

2 out of 5 stars Simply not worth the money.......2006-08-31

CDs cost a small fortune these days. Considering that there are a gajillion bands you can give your money to for entertainment, it will not do for an artist to have four decent tracks on a record and make the rest utterly insular and unlistenable. At least The Velvet Underground had great songs all the way through before they decided to tell the listener to get bent. I mean, that's all well and good if you aren't interested in what people think of your art, but from a consumer standpoint, that attitude alone does not make a good record. Especially, especially if you are going to be very depressed and request payment for someone to hear about it. Or worse, relate to it.

Sparklehorse's It's A Wonderful Life treads on very a thin ice of likeability, on the verge of falling through to the bottomless depths of suckitude. Admittedly, it has one great song. "Gold Day" evokes the Beatles during their most psychedelic and moody period, a dead ringer for the type of languid dream state conjured up in "Strawberry Fields Forever". A few other songs make an impression, clustered at the beginning of the album. Take the title track, for example. The irony is almost audible- perhaps that is the substance one hears, literally, bubbling and pulsing through the cracks of this song. Linkous is not a happy camper by a long shot, practically whispering lines like "I'm a bog of poison frogs"..."I'm full of bees who died at sea". I shudder at the thought of 16 year old emo kids cutting on themselves in their room while they listen to this type of misery/moping. It's happening somewhere. Anyway, PJ Harvey and Tom Waits show up to make two other songs on this record worth a listen or three. The rest is either forgettable or annoyingly dissonant. Lord knows Im a sucker for tape loops, backwards tracking and breaking away from traditional song structure for a nifty freakout but when that kind of stuff is the only thing holding a listener's interest, it can either make you go "whoa, that was neat, I just got goosebumps" or "ooh, that's ugly. Even I'm asking myself why I'm listening to this." Guess what happens more often on It's A Wonderful Life".

I'd put your money in better bands, or at least other albums by this artist. Sparklehorse is talented, but inconsistent here.

3 out of 5 stars Alt-sadness from sensitive record.......2006-07-15

3 1/2

Beautiful, depressing slow-core at it's best, slightly jarring and disconnected at worst, "It's a Wonderful Life" captures artist Mark Linkous at his melancholic height, barely escaping the album's minimalistic haunted nature with the few less emotionally heavy rockers on here. While not for everyone who is into their forward momentum mentality, chill out with this alt rock gem when you want a nice shimmering slow ride into loneliness, and it's hopefully subsequent inspirations.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

3 out of 5 stars Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

5 out of 5 stars Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09

It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

4 out of 5 stars cd reviews.......2006-01-15

this cd was very good, much recommended

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

5 out of 5 stars Bravos belong to beloved baritone Howard Keel.......2005-08-30

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.

5 out of 5 stars Very Solid and Diverse Collection.......2006-05-13

I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a strong collection. There are about 130 songs on this set and they include some very rare tracks you won't find anywhere else, except by compiliation, such as the Chordettes, "Lollipop" and Guy Mitchell's "Singing the Blues."

In addition, there are some standard favorites such as Nat King Cole, Pat Boone, Dean Martin, and the Four Lads.

There is something for everyone, rock, pop, or country.

I will say the collection is missing Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, and Elvis, as well as the Do-Wop genre. So if you are looking for a complete compiliation, this is not it, but it is pretty darn close.

For pure volume of tracks, I give this five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Another Terrific CD from the 50s.......2005-02-14

This is a strong collection of 15 songs from the 50s, and worth the purchase price. It is one of the Time Life CDs, so you know the quality is first class and the insert contains some information about each song. Note this is not a collection of rock 'n roll songs, more the kind of song your parents listened to on the kitchen or car radio while you were an innocent kid. I'd give it 5 stars but it has 15 songs and Time Life could have been more generous--say giving us 20 songs. This is my kind of music, maybe it's yours too.

4 out of 5 stars Great NeoSoul.......2006-04-18

Havana's debut album Life - Living In Fearless Emotion (Skoolcraft Entertainment) deals with life and love situations we can all relate too, while also touching on issues surrounding her difficult upbringing. L.I.F.E. features production from up and coming producers Nicolay, Waajeed, S1 and others. A project that is destined to shine, L.I.F.E, will give you musical pleasure and open your soul to the sounds of Havana. On the inspirational title track "Life" Havana sings, "Life keeps passing by, don't blink or close your eyes, don't sleep on today, cause tomorrows not guaranteed". Havana has a story and she wants the world to hear it.

Leonard Bernstein's New York is a cornucopia of tongue-in-cheek wit, unabashed romanticism, big-city loneliness, and intellectual irony. His well-known orchestral brilliance is beautifully represented under the stellar conducting of Eric Stern, but his underappreciated talents as a songwriter are what shine, elevating this recording to magic. The cast of American theater's best includes Mandy Patinkin wonderfully indulging his comic side; Judy Blazer and Donna Murphy, the shiniest lights on Broadway, demonstrating their extensive range as singing actresses; Audra McDonald making the difficult sound easy; and Richard Muenz and Dawn Upshaw singing elegantly. Most unforgettably pleasing are the trios "Ya Got Me" and "What A Waste." A great tribute to Bernstein's theater works. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-13

I agree that this is a great collection. But I have to wonder: Am I the only one who got a bum copy of the CD? The songs are all mixed up on my copy, as in, most of the tracks are mislabeled: "A Quiet Girl" is really "Tonight", The Balcony Scene, printed as "Tonight" is really "Somewhere". The list goes on.

So, who do I kvetch to? I'd like a copy that isn't a complete mishmash.

1 out of 5 stars The Feel of New York.......2007-01-09

Having spent most of my working years in NYC, I felt this CD brought the city to me. Bernstein has allways been a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The next stop once you've heard the originals.......2007-01-09

As a tribute to Bernstein on Broadway, this CD is hard to beat. All the singers are stars but of a generation, ro two, beyond the originals. Naturally here's been a change of style, and these renditions are more knowing, sophisticated, and at times ironic than the originals. On their own, Donna Murphy, Dawn Upshaw, and Mandy Patinkin, among others, are masters of their craft, but I hope anyone who loves LB will also seek out the original cast albums for all of his musicals, or the clesest one can get (On the Town was remade in the Fifties). Those recordings cast a unique spel, but the next stop is this marvelous CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein's New York, it's a wonderful town!.......2002-01-15

And speaking of "Wonderful Town," it's so nice to hear music from this least appreciated of Bernstein's musicals. "What a Waste," "A Quiet Girl" and Audra McDonald's enchanting "A Little Bit in Love" have never sounded better. Donna Murphy burns the house down with the torchy "Ain't Got No Tears Left," and has fun with Patinkin and Blazer on the raucous "Ya Got Me." "One Hand, One Heart" sung by Dawn Upshaw and Richard Muenz is movingly rendered, as is Patinkin's wonderful delivery of an all-time Bernstein favorite, "Some Other Time." My only comlaint? Where is "I Can Cook Too?" A terrific recording.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD BUT..........2000-07-02

I loved this CD, but there was some things that kept it fromgetting four stars. First Mandy Patkin, I loved him in Sunday in The Park With George, also I have a CD of him singing yiddish songs all good, but in this CD I just don't like him. Like in the song "Come Up To My Place" I didn't like his voice and I never could quite see him as the character for that song. Also I would have liked to see (well actually "hear") some more of the dance numbers or overtures, I realize the main point of the CD was all the singers they put together, but the real highlight of the CD for me was the sections from Fancy Free, and Ballet At The Village Vortex from Wonderful Town. Also I liked "One Hand One Heart" a lot. Overall I would get this CD if you like Bernstein or any of these musicals, it is good listen, just not outstanding.
