Initially lumped in with Westlife, Boyzone, etc., as just another fabricated pop boy group, Five were one of the few bands who actually did stand out from the crowd. Eschewing soppy love songs in favor of far more in-your-face rowdy pop, Five bounced onto the scene with attitude, slightly more streetwise styling than their contemporaries, and some truly great pop tunes. From the inspired sampling of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock & Roll" on "Everybody Get Up" to the sing-along-and-clap-your-hands party vibes of "Got the Feelin'," it's hard not to be seduced by Five's charm. Things do go a bit Backstreet Boys on weaker tracks like "Until the Time Is Through" and "Satisfied," but these are forgivable blips on an otherwise stellar trajectory. The opening line of "Slam Dunk (Da Funk)" says it all: Five have "the power to rock you." --Helen Marquis

4 out of 5 stars When the lights go out..........2006-01-10

Was the jam back in the day...in the day that revolved around Brintey Spears and Justin Timberlake! This was the jam. I loved this song, as did everyone I know until we all graduated to the higher class of music consisting of DMX and Twista for some of us and then there was OTEP and Simon Says for the others, and yet there are some of us who will listen to everything from bubble gum pop as you may call it to thrashing metal...anyways, for what it was, this album dropped and was huge and yes, I'll admit it, I LOVED IT!! So I was surfing this site as always and there is was and so I just had to say that this was a great album with a great song that I just loved to listen to and dance to and sing to when I was 13..and now...not so much, but it brings fond memories to the table.

1 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhh.......2005-10-31

ok to those of you who are still listening to this teen pop crap that was suposed to die like disco died let me give you a little advise on how to listen to this album number one turn on the cd number two put a gun to your head and if you enjoy this album proceed to number 3 pull the f-ing trigger

5 out of 5 stars 5ive.......2005-10-15

I remember this album when I was in the 6th grade. I love this album. This group perfected this explosive sound. Out of the roughhousing comes an edge that combines danceable depth and sensitive layers, something like a friendly riot going on. Their upbeat approach to life and making music is well-chronicled. This album has been certified Platinum. Remember, this was 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars For Five!.......2004-12-03

I can still remember the first time I listened to this album. Of course when it came out I actually had it on tape because I taped it from my friend's Cd (Ah the days before CD burners). Of course, now I HAD to buy it on CD. Regardless of the fact that 5ive was a one hit wonder in America, I loved this album. I can still remember 5ive performing the songs off this CD on their Disney channel special. 5ive were actually one of my favorite boybands of the time and are one of the few boyband CD's I can still listen to. With the changing times of America's music tastes and my own I can still find myself listening to this CD. The songs are danceable and the guys really do have talent. My favorite songs are "Satisfied" "I Remember" and "It's All Over". This is one of those CD's that you don't need to skip over any songs at all. If you're looking for a CD to sum up what the best of the early boyband era has to offer, this is your best pick. Also pick up 5ive's "Invincible" while you're at it, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars This album was and still is funky for a boy band! .......2004-09-07

I liked FIve's album! I'd still get it now because it was so in your face! I heard When the Lights go Out again this past summer and it still sounds good. I thought that Max Martin was able to produce some very funky songs here, even if he had hits with Backstreet and NSYNC and Britney Spears' album hadn't even come out. The others by Cutfather and Joe, Lever and Percy, Richard Stannard and others were also good. There's more of a rock thing on this one versus the pop feel of their rivals, lots of guitar. Slam Dunk, the funky It's the Things you Do, the Joan Jett-sounding Get Up!, the phone number song, and the rest of the album is just as superb. Only Satified is the weak cut here--doesn't really grab me. Five had a very unique, edgy debut album that still holds up today with its catchy grooves and hooks!

5 out of 5 stars This is the version I have... EXCELLENT.......2003-08-24

I've been searching for this on amazon.com to review for absolutely ages (about four years over four different accounts), and finally under my best going username I've found it so I can review it! Yahoo! This is the Australian/NZ version of 5ive's normally brilliant debut album. With these two bonus tracks, it's even better. Don't let the 55 track thing put you off, it's way to hide the secret track "Switch" at track #55. Here is my rundown of each track: (I've done a review of the European version of this CD, and my opinions have changed, so it won't hurt, will it?)

    1. Slam Dunk (Da Funk)
Five's ever great debut single. Listening to this song brings back memories! It was out in 1998, so long ago (I was only 11, I'm 16 now). This is catchy, with a great sing along chorus. 4/5
    2. When the Lights Go Out
I love this song! It was the debut American single and the second single everywhere else. I love Abs' ablibs at the beginning and I get the chorus stuck in my head constantly. This is the version of the song with J rapping, not Abs. 5/5
    3. Everybody Get Up
Fourth single for the boys. This song contains a sample from Joan Jett's "I Love Rock And Roll", and it sounds fantastic! The chorus is sooooo catchy (they have this simple dance routine for it) and J is a great rapper. 5/5
    4. Got the Feelin'
Such a happy song! You'll get the 'na na na na' part stuck in your head, and the chorus too. This was the third single, and this is great for listening to on the beach or at a party. 5/5
    5. It's the Things You Do
MY FAVOURITE! This has been my favourite Five song since 1998! It's never changed, 6 years later. This is the European version, and I prefer the American version of the song. But this still rocks. I love the raunchy lyrics and the bridge. I also love the middle 8, with the slow singing. 5,000,000/5
    6. Human [The Five Remix]
I heard the original last year, and it was rubbish. This is much better. Five have added their own flavour to the original ballad, by adding a whole new part to it "Five boys in the house check it out". Abs sings it and it sounds great. It's the best part of the song. 4.5/5
    7. Until the Time Is Through
Aww! I love this ballad. It was my favourite on the album before I got this Australian version (I had the European version before my Mum bought me this version.. the Euro version is down the bottom of my CD collection somewhere collecting dust). Ritchie and Scott sound lovely singing the lead vocals. I love the video too. This is beautiful but I prefer "You and I". 5/5
    8. Satisfied
The first mediocre track we've come across so far. This has nice music and it's great to hear Sean singing, but this is bland. 3/5
    9. Partyline 555-On-Line
Love the lyrics in this. It's so catchy! I love the bridge, with the "short skirts, high heels and leather" line. J does a funny rap and the chorus will stick in your head. Definitely partylicious! 5/5
    10. That's What You Told Me
This is a girlfriend dumping song, where the guys tell their girlfriends that they've hurt them. The whole entire song is really catchy, but I like "It's All Over" better. 4.5/5
    11. It's All Over
The continuation of "That's What You Told Me". This is better then the latter. I love the jazz at the beginning and I had the chorus in my head for a week. You'll like it on first listen. 5/5
    12. Don't You Want It
Oooh! This is very naughty, ... and raunchy! But I love it! This is my third favourite song on the album. Scott sounds good on this song, but I think I'd like it even better if Ritchie sung lead vocals (hehe I love Ritchie!). 5/5
    13. Shake
This was the second song at Five's Auckland concert in 2000 (I went, it was the best night of my entire life), and it rocks! I love the funny lyrics and the chorus. 4.5/5
    14. Cold Sweat
This song has weird lyrics, that I can't explain. But I love the "down, you're burning me down" part in the middle and the chorus. 5/5
    15. Straight up Funk

This is REALLY catchy (I know you're getting sick of me saying that, but it's true), with great music and a catchy bridge from J. 4.5/5
    16. My Song
The only other medicore song on the album along with "Satisfied". J and Abs do the entire song with no help from Scott, Ritchie or Sean. It has a cool chorus, though. 3/5
    17. You and I
Awwwwwww, this is my FAVOURITE Five ballad EVER (but I also love Closer To Me and Invincible). I LOVE THIS SONG! This is my second favourite on the album. They should have included it on the normal album, not as a bonus track. Sean and Scott have lead vocals and I love the music and the lyrics. 5/5
    18. Can You Jam
Another bonus track, this is really funky and catchy. You'll be singing along in no time. 5/5
    55. Switch
This is really good for a party. The guys sing the word "Switch" and everytime they do, the music changes. It's really, really cool. Flip all the way to track 55 (go backwards from 1 to get there, it's easier) and listen away! 5/5

    Favourite songs in order:

    1. It's The Things U Do
    2. You And I
    3. Don't You Want It
    4. It's All Over
    5. Until The Time Is Through

I love this CD. It's better value then the American or European version and has more tracks, and two bonuses not avaliable anywhere. ...

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific CD.......2000-12-27

This CD ROCKS! I bought the American version a long time ago. This is even better. The two bonuses and the hidden track make it all worthwhile!

5 out of 5 stars This CD Rox!!!.......2000-09-27

I love five, and it's all thanks to this CD. My best friend is totally in love with Scott Robinson (I think Abs is cuter but whatever), so when I went over to her house, she made me listen to it. Now they're my all time fave band! I really wish they would come to America more often though.

5 out of 5 stars After listening to this cd, Five has become my favorite band.......1999-06-29

Five is a very good band. I wish I would see more of 5 in America though. And I wish they would release new 5 cd's and songs in America as well as England. I want to get my hands on their new single FIRST!

5 out of 5 stars Really good song.......1999-06-15
