Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Grammys' legacy of surprises is underscored in a positive light here. Along with 1999 megasellers such as Backstreet Boys' fine "I Want It That Way" and Santana's, well, smooth "Smooth" are excellent tracks by the relatively obscure neo-soulster Macy Gray and blues-rock singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi. Further, the inclusion of Kid Rock among the nominees is a move that Grammy voters probably wouldn't have made if his multiplatinum album had been released even three or four years ago. Finally, with its emphasis on highly popular work--even Gray's On How Life Is has gone gold--this CD celebrates the eclectic tastes of America's mainstream music listeners. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Ish interesting.......2002-01-12

Are you a D.J.? Do you like PoP Music? Have you ever wanted any songs from the top Artists and you don't feel like stooping to actually BUYING any of their Cds? This CD has some of the most popular music of 2000. These are actually some of the best picks from each of these artists. Buy this instead.

4 out of 5 stars very good..........2001-12-06

This cd is a very good buy. Every hit song or artist that you can think of. My favorites are "No Scrubs" and "Mambo #5".

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining..........2001-12-06

This cd is a great buy. It has so many different artists that at least one song will satisfy you. Myself, I love "No Scrubs" by TLC, and "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega. Great listening!

3 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.......2001-10-26

Some of the tracks on this CD are truly memorable and a worthy addition to any collection. I am referring to Smooth by Santana, La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin and Sogno by the great Bocelli. Some of the other tracks such as Christine's "Genie" and Brittany and Backstreet Boys are not objectionable, but not great either. I quickly skip over the truly horrible tracks. Who cares about Mambo #5? Kid Rock is barely tolerable and so are a few other unnotables. Overall it is an uneven compendium of songs. Buy it used like I did, and skip the stinkers.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better.......2001-08-23

It gets 5 stars for Santana, Macy Gray, Susan Tedeschi, Marc Anthony, Andrea Bocelli and Sting. And maybe Kid Rock...I'm still out on that one. But the others. Oh boy. BSB's, Ricky, Christina, and Britney. Soooo overplayed and for the most part, so shallow and manufactured. Do they really deserve a Grammy nomination? I think not. When I think of all the really fantastic groups and artists out there, who, because they don't have the big bucks and big companies behind them, get little or no recognition. Instead we get manufactured artists who can only "sing", dance and look good. I know I will probably end up with a million non-helpful votes for my views, but that's ok. But it just seems to me, that over the last couple of years or so, songs are winning Grammys or getting nominations based on their radio popularity and teen fan base, rather than their true musical merit. And it is sad.

5 out of 5 stars 2000 Latin Grammy Nominees CD Review.......2000-09-13

This album is hot, only if you like latin music and only if you understand the rich latin background. It has Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and a ton more. Latin music to me, adds a little zany twist to music, it just makes it hotter, get this to satisfy your firey latino appetite.

This reissue of the Boston favorite's 1995 debut clearly highlights her greatest strength: her voice. Susan Tedeschi has been singing since she was 4 years old, and it shows; her voice has the power and control that comes from long experience. If her version of "Hound Dog" doesn't blow the top off of Big Mama Thornton's original, it's still a strong effort, and she's just as good with her own material. The title track--penned by Adrienne Hayes, guitarist for Tedeschi's band--is especially good, as the slow tempo allows Tedeschi to stretch her pipes a bit. Unfortunately, even by the release of Just Won't Burn, Tedeschi's guitar hadn't caught up with her voice, and the discrepancy is even more obvious here--there's a spark, but it doesn't quite catch fire. Still, there's no question that her heart's in the right place, and if her guitar work continues to improve, there'll be no stopping her. --Genevieve Williams

3 out of 5 stars My cat could probably mix better! I'm serious!.......2007-02-08

Fairly good CD marred by the most horrible recording / mixdown / mastering I've ever encountered on a commercial CD - nay, make that any CD! Through headphones the stereo image pumps around, indicating they did some heavy stereo compression without mixing the channels together for the control signal.

In order to listen to this without getting a terrible headache, I had to mix it down to mono and apply some fake stereo. Pathetic! Who let this thing get stamped out without even the most cursory inspection of the content quality?

[...] But please, please, please play blues guitar on your next CD, OK? Shove those those studio pickers out of the way and do what you do best! And take JH out of your Rolodex!

4 out of 5 stars she's great , this recording well . . . . .......2005-07-12

this is worth owning as it's a record of susan younger . . . .

i'm really looking forward to her new album - supposedly coming out this fall

4 out of 5 stars Great music, bad production.......2003-04-01

I love Susan Tedeschi and was thrilled to get a hold of this "pre-fame" CD. It's a great CD too. Full of powerful blues that are more reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt than of Janis Joplin.

The production on this CD is really pretty spotty. The first track "It's Up to You" has a very muddy quality to it and "It Hurts Me Too" is painful to listen to on headphones with the mixing from left to right channels constantly moving. Most of the tracks however, are adequately mixed.

All in all, this is well worth listening to if you're a Tedeschi fan, but her following CD's are far superior to this one. She just keeps getting better.

4 out of 5 stars A good record.......2002-09-30

Like most people, I fell in love with Susan Tedeschi after hearing "Just Won't Burn". It became the soundtrack of my senior year in high school...so I immediately bought "Better Days", and at first listen, I was disappointed. Nothing seemed to click. It wasn't bad, just okay. I set it aside for a couple months and just recently started listening to it again. I don't know why I didn't love it before! Some of the songs almost have a country feel, like the first track. Most are mellow blues, but they still rock. I can't wait for the new album!

5 out of 5 stars This gal knows how to play the blues!.......2002-07-12

I first heard Ms. Tedeschi when she opened for B.B. King in his year 2000 tour. What a night! I happen to be a big fan of the blues, and when I heard those performers, I was more than impressed! But Ms. Tedeschi stood out from the rest, because she expresses such a great amount of talent. You can tell that she loves her work! She can really play the blues, and her voice is just the icing on the cake!
It's hard to say which song on this album is my favorite. It's like trying to decide which one of your children you love more. But I will say that her interpretation of "Hound Dog" is not one to be missed. I would also have to say that the instrumental work on "You're On My Hair" is great! Not to mention, she can play a mean slide guitar! (When you hear "Locomotive" you'll know what I mean). I recommend this album to anyone who has a deep respect for the blues, you won't be disappointed!
