The World Won't End

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The second record by the Pernice Brothers, Joe Pernice's bright-eyed neo-country troupe, is an album that tackles themes of magnificent love, desperate frustration, and spirit-mangling depression. The World Won't End is far from an extended misery tract, though; well-versed in the canon of Bacharach, Wilson, and Big Star, Pernice has always reveled in loosing the most difficult of emotions into a rolling meadow of summertime pop. These 11 tracks are wrapped up in a gorgeous whirl of pedal steel, violin, and cello that is elegant, cathartic, and--best of all--really nice to listen to when the sun's out. "Our Time Has Passed" mulls painfully over the nostalgic memories of a dead love affair: "There's a box I still can't open / There's a name that hurts to say / I fall in love with the way I'm shaking/ In a crowd I think I see your face." "Working Girl (Sunlight Shines)," meanwhile, is a brief but beautifully observed vignette of a young temp stuck in a dead-end job, left "contemplating suicide or a graduate degree." Throughout, though, Pernice's sympathetic vocals, full of hope and purity, turn such empty impasses into a celebration of humanity. The message of The World Won't End? Simply that life goes on. --Louis Pattison

4 out of 5 stars A good, not great, pop rock album - not for everyone, but genre fans should like this.......2006-01-06

"The World Won't End" is a good album, but not great. It doesn't seem to have enough pizazze to go beyond the "4" rating, despite all that's going for it. It's also a bit uneven. If you're a fan of pop rock you're still going to like it either way. The singer does a relatively good job, but his voice could use a little work (or they could use a different singer - it's kind of cheesy sounding). He's a tad unlikable, but not too too much. It's hard to tell what the songs are about as the lyrics are pretty hard to hear, so you're essentially listening to how the song *sounds* - not what it's *about*. Thankfully this department is taken care of as every song features great hooks and catchy melodies that are present in most of the songs. This definitely helps the flow of the album. There are most certainly "weaker" tracks, but you'll probably like most of them ("Flaming Wreck" would be an example of one of the stand-out tracks on here). Pop rock fans should like this album, although I'm not sure if non-fans of the genre would care for it. Nevertheless, I'd slightly recommend this.

Highlights include:
"Working Girls (Sunlight Shines)"
"7:30"
"Our Time Has Passed"
"She Heightened Everything"
"Bryte Side" (sort of)
"Flaming Wreck"
"The Ballad Of Bjorn Borg"
"Endless Supply" (sort of)

4 out of 5 stars Superior melodic pop.......2004-08-09

I can't remember how I first ran across The Pernice Brothers exactly, but I remember hearing "She Heightened Everything" and immediately asking who it was doing the singing, and why hadn't I heard it before. A very good album, although it isn't quite great because too many of the songs sound too similar, but I can't get enough of the few that seperate themselves from the pack, especially "Working Girls (Sunlight Shines)". A hearty recommendation as well for fans of bands like The Posies, who seem very similar to my ears.

5 out of 5 stars So delightful !.......2003-05-28

This album is a grower. In these times of instant gratification, you may miss what Joe is creating. Solid lyrics run up against fantastic muscianship wonderfully produced. I find the whole dark lyric against uplifting music thing that the Bros do to be endlessly interesting. Yes, it is all cut from the same stone but that stone is marble! If only every album about "relationships" was this nuanced! I won't get into influences since this collection is so far above the mere name check. We are talking Dan Bejar level synthesis. If you need an older point of reference, let's say Elvis Costello but with a more late 70's country/rock slant. Simply the Pernice Bros are an insightful lyricist/talented singer backed by a superlative backing band. If you want something that lasts after the initial glow, this is certainly one of that slim number! This album of guitar pop gets better every time I hear it. Can't say that about many "good" records.

5 out of 5 stars for it's kind of music i believe it merits the best rating.......2003-05-22

Although this wasn't the best record of 2001, if you really do think about not many people can name a record that is more consistent from beginning to end. The only consistent complaint I have seen has been that his voice is too soft, which is truly a shame. His voice does have a very soft quality to it, but it goes along with the nature of the music. To tell you the truth, if I wanted one voice in the indie pop world to be fronting my band it would be his. His band doesn't really "rock out" it just plays perfect pop tunes. This album will be one that I will be going back to for a long time and I really hope people start picking up on this band. I really have no idea why this band wouldn't have major label backing. Can't wait to hear the new one.

2 out of 5 stars Eh........2002-08-01

Not bad, but not particularly amazing either. The songs don't really distinguish themselves from each other, and Pernice's voice is way too mannered.

Album Description

Justin Connor's debut album, Kaliyuga, boldly sets out to go where no CD has ever gone before - showcasing Justin's knack for crafty songwriting, sonic landscapes, and catchy riffs that seek to soothe the senses with a common collective thread of consciousness. Kaliyuga reflects a fearless celebration of various musical styles and sounds, infusing dreamy melodies, lush arrangements, 70's classic rock acoustics, honky-tonk piano riffs, and spacy mantras.

"The album title, Kaliyuga, is a Vedic reference to the age that we're all currently living in - an age defined by war, greed, consumption, decadence, and an overall deterioration of human existence. After months of pouring through various Vedic texts," Justin says reflectively, "I began to sense a strong correlation between many of the deeper truths and questions that I was having trouble understanding in my own life, to the many obstacles that this time period reflects…so I guess this album evolved in an attempt to elicit consciousness, while remaining aware of the many pitfalls that Kaliyuga may present along the way."

The heart of the music is centered on Justin's soulful voice and introspective lyrics, which often embodies a soft, earnest whisper reminiscent of a young Roger Waters. Kaliyuga has been hailed by numerous critics, who've compared the music to many of Justin's own inspirations including Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and the Velvet Underground, among others. However, Justin puts his own stamp on defining an original, idiosyncratic lo-fi aesthetic that's contemplative in both style and sound. In the process, he's created not only an accessible singer-songwriter pop album, but a genre defining sound with style to spare.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2006-01-18

This cd is definitely one you'll keep listening to over and over in your cd player. It's one of those cds that you start playing and your friends ask "Who is that? He sounds great!"

When I first opened the package, I ripped it to get to the music and started playing it in my car. Wow. Even a few people at the stoplights asked me who I was listening to. Now that sure doesn't happen every day.

My absolute favorite song on here is "Angelyne" which I was introduced to when a friend of mine played it. I purchased Justin's album within 20 minutes of hearing the song and you'll see what I'm talking about when you listen to it!! I also enjoyed "Behind the Sun," "Rhythms of Disguise," "Masquerade," and "The Happiest Goodbye" which are all slow songs. I think Justin Connor is EXCELLENT at his slow songs, which are perfect to get you in the mood to reflect on your life, emotions, and just makes you want to sway your head to the music.

Just a side note: When you start playing the cd, it takes about 30 seconds to start playing. At first I thought this was a mistake, but apparently the first song is intentionally supposed to start out that way and build up.
