Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is music for the millions !!!.......2007-03-17

This CD entitled Music For A Bachelor's Den contains excellent numbers from the late 1950s and early 1960s when Latin dance crazes were taking the country by storm, Cadillacs had fins and milk came in bottles. Men loved the new "Hi-Fi" records and record players; they entertained and romanced their women to many of these tunes.

The CD opens with "Once In A While" performed by Terry Snyder and his band. The musical arrangement makes excellent use of the percussion and some sounds come out the left speaker while others come out the right--this took advantage of the new stereophonic record players of the day. The xylophone adds a lot to the arrangement; too. The Latin beat is blended with the sound of a big band to produce a very special, memorable effect. Impressive!

"Love For Sale" by The Arthur Lyman Group follows and this number does not disappoint. The percussion, drums and xylophone carry the tune as the piano playing enhances the beauty of this track. This may be from the 1950s but it still sounds great to me today! Romantic, seductive and engaging all at once, "Love For Sale" is a highlight of this CD.

The George Shearing Quintet makes a contribution to the CD with their medley number entitled "Medley: As Long As I Live/Let's Live Again." The two numbers are joined together quite smoothly and the piano shines in the arrangement. "Like Young" by Linda Lawson provides a non-instrumental track for this CD; Linda's voice is rich, warm and vibrant. The arrangement with its use of the percussion and horn enhances the seductive and romantic flavor of this song. Excellent!

Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra perform the "Theme From 'Route 66;'" and the California based John Buzon Trio masterfully perform "Ill Wind" with the organ and the horns carrying most of the melody. The Arthur Lyman Group performs a second number on this CD with a heavenly version of "Yellow Bird." The xylophone, guitar and Latin beat give "Yellow Bird" an unforgettable quality. "Yellow Bird" enjoyed great popularity when it was released; and now you have a chance to see why! Moreover, The Dick Hyman Trio performs "Moritat (A Theme From The Threepenny Opera);" you just might recognize this as the melody for "Mack The Knife!"

One reviewer writes that the "Theme From 'The Honeymooners' (Melancholy Serenade)" does not match the melody used by The Honeymooners television show--and they are right. The version on this CD uses much more of an orchestral approach to this ballad; but I believe it remains beautiful nonetheless.

The CD ends fittingly with "Around The World (From 'Around The World In 80 Days).'" This ballad gets the orchestral treatment complete with a large strings section, flutes, piano and harp. You will enjoy the beauty of this final track.

The liner notes offer an essay by Paul Phillips and you get the song credits, too. The art work for the CD reflects forethought as well.

I highly recommend this CD for people who enjoyed this music when it first came out on record albums; and people who enjoy "lounge music" will thrill to every minute of this CD. The romantic flavor of each track is greatly enhanced by the often simultaneous Latin beat to produce a very exceptional effect that I rarely enjoy these days.

May you get this CD and enjoy it as much as I do. ¡Viva música!

4 out of 5 stars Melacholy serenade is NOT the theme form The Honeymooners..........2007-02-11

It was the theme to the Jackie Gleason show. Similar but not the same...

5 out of 5 stars Classic lounge tunes.......2004-03-10

In the '90's when lounge music suddenly became a musical fad, the marketplace was flooded with CD's trying to exploit the new-found popularity of the genre. Many of these CD's were a mish-mosh of anything that could vaguely be deemed "lounge" or easy listening and might bring in a few bucks to the owners. Here, in this volume from Steve Hoffman and the now defunct DCC Compact Classics, the genre gets an intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable treatment. Not only are some of these tunes representative of the "best" of the lounge tunes of the era but half of them are charting singles that will be recognized and immediately appreciated by the listener. Among the quintessential favorites here are the exotic sounding "Quiet Village" from Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman's ethereal "Yellow Bird". Other tunes spanning the diverse nature of the genre included here are Victor Young's "Around The World" from the movie and Jimmy Dorsey's big band last hurrah, "So Rare". While the track count (15) leans to the meager side, this collection has more great "lounge" music then many similarly-themed collections with twice the running time. Considering the vintage of the sources, production is first-rate with all but three tracks (12-14) in wide stereo and full-spectrum sound. Liner notes, while brief, pretty well tie up the package with backround notes and a bit of nostalgic rumination. If you need only a single sample of what this music encompassed both then and now, this is the one to get. An absolutely superb little package.

4 out of 5 stars Will take you back to a different time........2000-01-27

This cd takes me back to a time when my friends dad had an actual Hi Fi player. They were just new at the time, but did they ever sound great. The type of music during this era was exactly as it is on this cd. First off this has a great sound. The songs are very exotic, early 60s type lounge. "Route 66" takes me right out on the highway and into the desert. "Once in a While" really expoits the stereo picture as it was definitely just coming out at that time. The theme from the Honeymooners, Sunset Strip, Wow...... Martinis and early 60s furniture, bamboo chairs, and wall lamps all come to mind when listening to this cd. Definitely an odd, likeable collection of rare gems. It will standout in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars More Diana Dors, More Marilyn Monroe..........2005-12-23

I have in my LP collection the Diana Dors Swinging Dors Lp. Her
version of Rodgers and Hart GENTLEMEN IS A DOPE is great. It was
not included here. I hope they release that Lp on CD soon.
Marilyn Monroe as a singer is a great actress. Her phrasing,
and interpretation of each song she does is superb. There must be
a lot of unreleased Marilyn Monroe songs in the vaults of 2oth
century Fox, many deleted songs from her movies, that have yet to
see the light of day.

4 out of 5 stars Gentlemen prefer blondes........2005-06-30

This is a fine collection of "girl singers" from the "bachelor pad" era. This disc spotlights blondes. There is another CD that features brunettes. There isn't a redheads disc, probably because there aren't enough songs by redheads to fill a CD. Anyway, the disc at hand features a lot of fine blonde singers. Everybody knows Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe and Julie London, but you also get lesser known girls like Diana Dors, Paula Castle and Marilyn Maxwell. If you are interested in girl singers who can really swing, you should pick up this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Your Mind is Just a Big Brass Bed! WOW ! Va Va Voom!.......2000-03-29

I have bought this fantastic disc and it is the best in my lounge collection. DCC Compact Classics, a little independent label with the utmost best sound quality compared to the big guys, released the Sex Kittens Blondes and Brunettes (where is the redheads - Tina Louise, Ann-Margret - Abbe Lane - Rhonda Fleming, et al ? ) and these discs are great. Rhino's Cocktail Mix also includes the fast and sexy "Come By Sunday", another great Diana Dors track, but on Sex Kittens in Hi-Fi, Blondes, her sassy, downright dirty lyrics for April 1960 were too wild, "Your eyes are lighted windows, there's a party going on inside, Your mouth's a roller coaster, let me buy a ticket let me slip and slide...your mind's just a big brass bed"...WOW! Why Sony Records does not release Diana Dor's complete Columbia (c. 1960) LP "Swingin' Dors" is beyond me. And the Jayne Mansfield track melts this disc! But we are fortunate to have Marshall Blondsteins in the world who put artistic integrity and sound quality in place of large numbers of sales as the big boys do.

This LP is swank!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars shadow.......2004-07-20

Ran across this CD in a bargin bin and am I glad I grabbed it. It's my first foray into "lounge" and it is a great place to be. "Caravan" is my favorite cut on this album. Takes me back to the Sean Connery days of Bond and the Playboy Club I visited in Nassau. Definately a CD collection for the bunch of us who have been displaced by the recent music scene. Have committed to the rest of the collection and hope to not being disappointed. Also another one that is different genre but a great album is '101 strings' "A Night in the Tropics". I have the album looking for the CD.

5 out of 5 stars For super fidelity, DCC is the only way to go!.......2002-08-28

The DCC discs just sound better. Under the direction of Steve Hoffman, this series uses consistently better tapes, and better mastering, with more of that "sounds like a good record, not a CD" quality that the music of this era needs!

4 out of 5 stars Good Effort, but no Ultra-Lounge!.......2002-04-04

DCC has made a fair attempt to offer some swingin' music, although obviously following the lead of Capitol Records' far better series, "Ultra-Lounge". I have about four or five discs in DCC's set, including "Exotica" and both volumes of "Sex Kittens in Hi Fi". Overall, I give DCC a grade of C+, or at best a B- for the Bachelor's Den collection. This disc is a B-.

I have to say that the Mel Henke cuts lift this particular disc above the plain, workaday attempt to cash in on the retro Lounge craze. I'd never heard Henke's songs before, and they're a riot. It's always nice to hear "Caravan", and Ray Coniff offers his version here. "Music to Watch Girls By" with the Harmonicats is also featured. "Swamp-fire" is another good choice, as is "Jazz Pizzicato" and this version "I Get a Kick Out of You". The addition of cuts by Les Baxter and Julie London help round things out, although both are already on "Ultra-Lounge".

However, some cuts on this disc are just not swank. "Topless Dancers of Corfu" is just plain annoying. The music is more in the style of '70s electronica pop, which has no business in a Lounge, let alone your swingin' bachelor pad! And the version of "The Girl From Ipanema" on this disc makes me wish the "girl" would fly back there (wherever Ipanema is), never to return.

While not nearly as classy or wide-ranging as Capitol's "Ultra-Lounge" series, DCC does at least try to provide a swanky set of swingin' CDs with their "Music for a Bachelor's Den" collection. This disc is a pretty good one, with a good selection and competent liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Lounge music at its sauciest and its goofiest.......1998-08-08

This CD is an excellent example of "Lounge Music," a genre I only recently got into. The tracks are very pleasantly varied; there is something for every taste (among those who can dig this sort of music). The standout tracks, I feel, are the two "PLAYBOY-esque" songs by Mel Henke ("The Lively Ones" and "The Twisters"), a jazzed-up version of Leroy Anderson's "Jazz Pizzacato," and a big-band, no-frills version of "Caravan." P.S.: If you gritted your teeth when I used the phrase "dig this sort of music," then Lounge Music is not your cup of expresso!

5 out of 5 stars Th Essence of Arthur Lyman.......2006-11-10

This album typifies Arthur Lyman and gives evidence as to why he was so popular in the 50's and 60's. His music, a blend of jazz, Hawaiian music and "exotica," is still treasured by those of us who are addictd to the melding of jungle sounds, bird calls, and Hawaiian music. The next time you host a BBQ, light your tiki torches, put on Arthur Lyman, and turn your BBQ into a Luau!

5 out of 5 stars TAKE ME BACK. MOST EXCELLENT MUSIC.......2005-07-12

Oh baby you know what I like! Arthur Lyman even surpasses Martin Denny in the exotic islands/bachelor pad style. I have every cd of both magnificent artists from the fifties. This is the great mental transport time-capsule back to the good days and this cd is some best of the bachelor pad series for the serious romantic exotic islands collector. A must, esp good when mixed with Arabian and downtempo lounge jazz with some mambo thrown in.

4 out of 5 stars Includes Yellow Bird.......2003-01-17

Yellow Bird by the Arthur Lyman Group is a sparkling diamond. It is intricate, gentle, wistful, magical, possibly the most beautiful instrumental ever to hit the charts. This magic couldn't be sustained by anyone. You can't produce the most beautiful recording of the year a dozen or more times on an album. The rest of the songs are pretty ok too.

4 out of 5 stars There could be no better background music for a first date........1999-06-24

You've invited that perfect girl over for dinner. You've got the wine. candles, take out from her favorite resteraunt, and condoms. Perfect... OH NO, WHAT DO I THROW IN THE STEREO? Look no farther than this C.D.. It is Quite possiblly the best you could have on hand. Not too intrusive for the level of intimacy desired yet intriuging enough to make her wonder if you might have enough culture and depth to introduce you to her friends. Buy this music!!

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2007-05-06

Wonderful collection of songs from the Arthur Lyman Group. Must have to your collection of exotico.

4 out of 5 stars Picture yourself on a beautiful South Pacific island--with a mainland jazz band imported just for you !!!.......2007-04-03

The Arthur Lyman Group produced some of the greatest lounge music of the 1950s and 1960s. This CD contains 18 tracks of very good music to show us why The Arthur Lyman Group achieved such popularity.

The CD starts with "Taboo." The horns open up into a musical arrangement that highlights the percussion, guitar, piano and numerous other percussion instruments. The melody gathers steam; and the only thing I definitely didn't like was the bird sounds sprinkled throughout this number and other numbers on this CD. Otherwise "Taboo" proves to be a solid opener for this CD. "Love For Sale" is track number two; and the melody is so beautiful and infectiously catchy and upbeat that you will be stunned if you haven't heard this number before! The piano and percussion do a great job on "Love For Sale." How elegant!

"Fascination" begins with the xylophone and chimes. Other instruments then join in to make this an elegant, slow paced number. "Fascination" will make you want to grab your sweetheart and slow dance all around the living room! SMILES The piano comes in midway through "Fascination" which infuses this instrumental ballad with a continental flair all its own.

"Hava Nagila" is another catchy track on this CD. The flute and percussion carry the opening of the musical arrangement; and the melody overall is relentlessly happy and upbeat. When the piano and other instruments join in you'd better have plenty of space on your living room floor--you'll be dancing to this number, too!

One especially elegant number on this CD would be "Arrivederci Roma." The percussion, piano and horns all combine to make this a memorable number with a singularly beautiful continental flair. The band members occasionally yell out a "whoop!" to let you know they're enjoying playing this number every bit as much as you're enjoying listening to it.

"76 Trombones (From "The Music Man")" opens strong with the piano, chimes and drums going strong on all cylinders. This rousing instrumental ballad shines and you will enjoy it thoroughly.

The CD closes with the very pretty "Maui Chimes." Obviously, the chimes perform an integral part of the musical arrangement. They sound great when the ukulele comes in, too! When the piano and other instruments are added to the arrangement the excitement only grows. However, this is the last track on this CD--now, where did I put The Best Of The Arthur Lyman Group, Volume Two?

I highly recommend this CD for fans of mood music, lounge music and easy listening music, too. People who enjoy "exotica" music will love this CD as well.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AS ALL ARTHUR LYMAN CDS.......2005-07-12

Arthur Lyman always does an excellent CD. I have every single one and in many cases I love him more than Martin Denny although both are superb.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music from a Beautiful Man.......2003-08-22

Arthur Lyman was probably one of the most underrated musicians of his genre. Not only was he a great musician, he was a fabulous person. He ALWAYS remembered his fans were the reason he made it in the first place (unlike too many of today's "stars"). There is some beautiful music on this CD!! In particular, Legend of the Rain is a wonderful piece. The Legend of Pele demonstrates Arthur's abillities well, too. One error in the liner notes... says Arthur was born in 1936. That's incorrect-- he was born in 1932 in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent example of "Exotica" essence..........2002-08-12

There are three big names in the "exotica" genre of the 1950's tropical cocktail lounge/smooth jazz: Lyman, whose most popular song, "Yellow Bird" is not on this particular collection, and Martin Denny, whose big hit was "Quiet Village" and Les Baxter, who wrote "Quiet Village." The CD reissues, twofers, and remastered compilations are hard to find at present, and in demand in the auctions. This is a good set if you find it at a price you like. I rate it four instead of five, because I would have loved to have "Yellow Bird" and Lyman's version of "Quiet Village" put on here instead of "March of the Siamese Children" and "Jungle Jalopy." The two missing titles are on a follow-up collection, "More Best of..." on the same label. I paid what I consider a bargain price for my copy, and I am happy with it. It isn't something I'll play more than a few times a year...but as a person old enough to remember the original records, and also as a former resident of Hawaii, I just had to have something by Arthur in my collection. Back when I was in high school, I liked Martin Denny's work even better, but truly, each man has his gifts and subtle strengths. Bird calls, rain noises, lots of percussion from "native" instruments, vibes and guitars...this music is fun, yet mellow. True, after awhile one song begins to sound like another (which was probably a big factor in the downfall of the Exotica category in the first place) but there are weekends when you just might want to hear some tropical parrot sounds over some smooth jazz riffs, above a melody that is familiar from your childhood. This disc has nice sound quality and is not re-recorded...these selections were taken from the Arthur Lyman Group's original work in Honolulu and the original albums on the briefly famous "Hi Fi" label. The original LP album covers were frequently erotic, the sounds inside were exotic to Mainland Americans, yet not disturbing. Everyone who wants his or her collection to cover the highlights of post- WWII popular music will need at least one "Exotica" sample. This disc fills the bill quite nicely.
