4 out of 5 stars ...last tango in Paris.......2007-03-13

Even though Falco's "3" was the absolute definitive height of his career (commercially speaking). This by no means is his best release. Bloated and pretentious, Falco's singing gets lost in endless techno-poly rhythms and synth overlays. Thus boring the listener with extreme dance oriented schlock in it's purest disco-tronic 80's form. "Rock Me Amadeus" was a three and a half minute video and radio ditty. Here it's presented in pompous "Solieri" mode, clocking in at some eight and a half minutes. Making the listener long for the vinyl 45 version. "Vienna Calling", another three and a half minute radio and video gem is also given the same treatment (the "Metternich Arrival" mix). Rendering the listener with some very mis-leading results. Meaning; you're not really sure the extensions were all that enticing, let alone necessary. This outing is worth the price of admission for the snot kicking ("get down on your knees and pray") "Macho Macho" alone. "Munich Girls" is also a highlight of this 1985 release. However, to avoid the monotony of it all...his 1999 "Greatest Hits" (Budda Records) package is perhaps a better value for your money and also contains the overrated (yet under-appreciated video translation) "Jeanny" and the radio edits of Rock Me Amadeus and Vienna Calling.

(note; this review is for the original 1985 A&M "U.S." CD release.)

5 out of 5 stars An 80's classic, but be prepared to scrape off a layer of cheese!.......2006-06-14

Falco 3 is a classic 80's album, because it incorporates everything you associate with the era - the rock, synth, electic drum with the trademark Falco wacky, but so precise lyrical delivery.

The tracklist ranges from classics to cheesy rock/pop, in particular the tracks 'Munich Girls' 'Manner Des Westerns' and 'Macho Macho' may fall into the latter category, but they are addictive tracks that keep you singing and bopping along - in particular behind the wheel!

Falco 3 is the soundtrack of the 80's generation,it's production is slick, and for these reasons I think it's his best album.

5 out of 5 stars The best Falco album!.......2006-05-12

Falco 3 is one of my favorite albums of all time! All the tracks (with the exception of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue) were fantastic. This is the original German version of the album and, therefore, is missing the incredible American remixes of Rock Me Amadeus (Salieri version) and Vienna Calling. You need to track down the out of print AMERICAN version of Falco 3 to get both extended American mixes; the American version has a different cover (a close-up of Falco's face). The Gold Mix of Rock Me included on this original German version of Falco 3 does not have the spoken background info lead-in on Mozart or the female "do it to me, rock me" chorus.

If you like Rock Me Amadeus, you might also like Rasputin by Boney M, which is similar in that it is about a real historical figure, gives you a history lesson, has a sexy female chorus, and is great poppy euro-trash from the 1980s. Also check out German group Modo who sound a lot like Falco, IMO. Their hits include Eins, Zwei, Polizei, Super Gut, and Mein Lebes Tango.

5 out of 5 stars Landmark LP Still On CD Via Import!.......2004-10-07

I remember buying this on vinyl when it first came out in the USA in early 1986 and it made me become the die hard Falco fan I still remain today. I played the heck out of this LP (belive it or not my vinyl is still near mint!) However ones that were familiar with the original US release will notice that on this CD since it is the 1985 original German pressing on CD, that "Rock Me Amadeus" is the version used in the video and not the "Solieri" version which appeared on the US LP and CD (when it was in print). Also the other change is "Vienna Calling" being the version used in the video and not the different and extended mix on the US LP (the video versions were obviously the original mixes). Both versions on the US LP were versions made for 12" singles in Germany when we in the US got different 12" mixes for both. All around though this is a very nice remaster and sounds much better than the vinyl and original US CD version. Now for the album itself, stand out tracks that are quite good are "Macho Macho", the very Bowie inspired "Nothing Sweeter Than Arabia". Also look out for the not so big hit in the US but classic everywhere else, "Jeanny" and the jazzy cover version of Bob Dylan's "Its All Over Now Baby Blue" which at the very end has a quite timeless and comical blooper they kept in with the sax player hitting a sour note and mumbling in a German accent (...)This is a good way to get into Falco if your not already a fan.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say..........2004-09-22

Falco is one of my favorite 80s rock stars. His somewhat non-mainstream themes are refreshing, his style is interesting, and his songs are overall great to listen to even in this new millenium. Too bad he's dead.

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for a truly great artist.......2007-04-22

If you want to know about Tito Gobbi, this is the set for you. Truly the very best of this phenomenal baritone, one of those rara avis in opera (both a great singer and a great actor).
On both CDs, is Gobbi in his finest: from comedy (All'idea di quel metallo/Come Paride vezzoso) to tragedy (Nemico della Patria), from grand opera (Cruda, funesta smania) to verismo (Si puo?).
The first CD includes some selections of less known operas (such as Zazà, Fedora, I gioielli della Madonna or L'arlesiana) that adds value thanks to Gobbi's artistry.
But it is truly on the second CD where Gobbi shines as the powerful artist he was. Devoted entirely to Giuseppe Verdi's incredible rols for baritone, track after track Gobbi reveals himself as one of the milestones in opera; his deeply emotional approach of Di Provenza il mar (La Traviata) and A tal nome palpito (Simon Boccanegra) matches perfectly with the grandeur of Eri tu (Un ballo in maschera) or Dio che nell'alma infondere (Don Carlo), and chilling Pietà rispetto amore (Macbeth) and Iago's Credo (Otello).
Cherry over the cake: his portrait of Falstaff...

Do not miss this album. Not only a excellent tribute to Gobbi, but also one of the best double sets of The Very Best series of EMI.

A wonderful collection of the roles sung by this superb and multi-talented
baritone of days long gone. In 65 years as an opera lover, I never heard a
better Figaro or a more bone-chilling Scarpia.

5 out of 5 stars Puccini sung by Frenin Milnes and Pavarotti? What could be better?.......2007-05-12

I own several recordings of Tosca, but this is still the reigning favorite, featuring a stellar cast at the height of their collective powers. Don't let the 1978 recording date deter you - the sound quality is excellent, and the performance sumptuous from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Too Lyric For A True Dramatic Tosca.......2006-02-10

If you're looking for a Tosca the way it should be performed and how it should really sound(fiery, passionate, dramatic) don't look to this recording. This should not be anyone's first Tosca recording or sampler!! I'm by no means a learned music or opera scholar but I am a critic and have listened and watched Tosca long enough to know that this particular recording was at the time purely experimental for Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni. Yes, these two sing wonderfully together as well as individually. They are too many an unbeatable tenor/soprano pair, as their recordings of La Boheme, Manon Lescaut, Madame Butterfly and even L'Amico Fritz attest. While in these operas the music allows them to sing with full lyricism and beauty, the plot for Tosca is too dramatic, intense and forward-moving as an opera and the musical score itself reads this way. There are only a few moments of beautiful melodies: Cavaradossi's first aria "Ricondita Armonia" in which he rhapsodizes about his source of inspiration as an artist, his lover Tosca, the Love Duet between himself and Tosca that follows shortly after and Tosca's own heart-breaking aria "Vissi D'Arte", her prayer to God asking why he has abandoned her in her most needy hour when Scarpia has her in his trap and Cavaradossi is about to be executed. Puccini never fails to deliver some moments of beauty but for the most part, Tosca is an opera that depends on , raw human emotion and even violence, with just a touch of sexual undercurrent. For Sherill Milnes, the role of Scarpia was one that came easy to him. He had sung Scarpia splendidly on record earlier in 1973 for RCA with Leontyne Price and Placido Domingo. He starred as Scarpia in an Italian film with Placido Domingo and soprano Raina Kabaivanska shot on location in Rome in 1975. His baritonal technique is not only handsomely sung, but with the right amount of theatricality as a villainous character.

Freni and Pavarotti had the same wet nurse in Italy and grew up together. Their long careers were remarkable. Both sang through the late 60's, the 70's, 80's and part of the 90's. In the Madame Butterfly recording under Karajan, their voices soar with beauty and emotion in the Love Duet and we get the same, if not more passion, in the Love Duet between Tosca and Mario in Act 1. Beautiful voices, yes. Dramatic enough ? Hardly. Mirella Freni is singing a role that is frankly too hard for her. There is more than one moment in which the role's vocal demands are too much for her to handle. Her Tosca is nonetheless very feminine, sensual and there are a few flashes of fire, but she portrays Tosca as if she were a quiet killer. Too much nobility, too much grace and Tosca is meant to be pushed to the brink of despair as she is completely threatened by Scarpia and even to act by her baser instincts. In this respect, in sheer beauty of tone, she is like Leontyne Price in the 1962 studio recording under Karajan. She makes a beautiful, ravishing Tosca, so if you like this approach, then you will enjoy Mirella Freni as Tosca. And word to the wise, this is her first Tosca recording and is far better than her later 1991 recording with Placido Domingo and
Samuel Ramey. In that recording, she is past her prime and shouting instead of singing. It's the worst Tosca I've ever heard. As for Pavarotti in this recording, he is totally wrong for the part of Cavaradossi. Pavarotti is a voice made for Donizetti, Bellini and some Verdi. It's a voice that cannot step up to the challenge of the demands of the role of Cavaradossi, which calls for a darker more dramatic voice. When you hear the Cavaradossis of Mario Del Monaco, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Franco Corelli and Placido Domingo you are getting the real thing. But Pavarotti is just Pavarotti- a big, blazing, bright voice without any real intelligence or dramatic commitment. He fails miserably here, no matter what any Pavarotti fan might tell you. This is not a role for him. Even Calaf in Puccini's Turandot is a role suited for him, and Pinkerton in Butterfly, but not Mario Cavaradossi. Rescigno and the National Philharmonic are nothing to be excited about as far as musicality. Please, check out these recordings of Tosca for better quality in performance:

Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Tito Gobbi/Serafin

Renata Tebaldi, Mario Del Monaco, George London/Molinari-Pradelli

Leontyne Price, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Giuseppe Taddei/Karajan

4 out of 5 stars Not too shabby..........2004-06-24

Though this recording occasionally sides with sterility, enough passion is present from Freni alone to keep it exciting. In my opinion, Freni is spinto enough to handle the role of Tosca here despite not being a dramatic soprano, and her chest voice and highest notes are more than fulfilling. I imagine a Tosca having as fresh a voice as Price in her prime, and Freni has just that. Pavarotti is not my favorite, but he is tolerable here. The other singers are more than sufficiently idiomatic in their roles.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-01-22

Well...I would have to say that this is good because...EVERY recording that has Freni and Pavarotti on it is good (best soprano and tenor ever), and Sherrill Milnes is incredible as well. Freni, Pavarotti, and Milnes-powerhouse, awesome, better than everyone else! yea!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-01-22

    I can't even say....wowo! How does Mirella Freni get that good...and Pavarotti...and Milnes....oh man!

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable 'Tosca'.......2000-06-11

A fine performance, with thoroughbred Italian 'gusto' all round. Especially good performances from Miricioiu as Tosca and Carroli's extremely 'physical' Scarpia. At the price, this would make a valuable addition to any operatic collection.
