After switching to big-name British producer John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin fame; he also contributes some instrumental support), this female stringband quartet continues to go wider and deeper in its exploration of acoustic Americana. On their sophomore release, Uncle Earl's balance contributes to their range. Each of the four is a virtuosic musician, all contributing vocals that blend into the buoyant harmonies of "One True," the a cappella shape-note spiritual "Buonaparte," and the field hymn "Easy in the Early ('Til Sundown)." While uptempo fare spotlights the sprightly fiddle of Rayna Gellert, banjoist Abigail Washburn sings a stark meditation on mortality in the revival of Ola Belle Red's "My Epitaph," with guitarist Kristin Andreassen illuminating the vocal purity of A.C. Carter's "The Birds Were Singing of You." As for percussion, Gillian Welch provides guest drums on "The Last Goodbye," and Andreassen's clogging serves as a rhythm track behind Gellert's fiddle on "Sisters of the Road." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars 20-something women with ageless souls.......2007-07-21

There are no words to express the soulfulness and purity of Uncle Earl. Bluegrass might be an accurate niche for some of their music, but all of it is enhanced by the the essence of their souls -- especially when Abigail Washburn leads an acapella spiritual or blues number. Only four women are equal to stand with her on the pedestal of supreme vocal talent: Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, Joan Baez, and Bonnie Koloc. I own every CD Washburn and the group have produced, and I intend to devote my retirement years by seeing every Uncle Earl and Shadow Quartet performance I can get to--they are totally superb!!! I recently spent an entire day and traveled over 100 miles to see them in Chicago. One suggestion however --, how can show managers make the ignorant spectators in the audience shut up, so the real diehard fans (like me) can just enjoy? At Baez and Koloc performances, you can hear a single pin drop, and NOBODY walks across the entire front edge of their stages.

5 out of 5 stars What a sound!.......2007-05-28

This is my first exposure to Uncle Earl and I must say that they are phenominally talented. The fact that they could get John Paul Jones to produce this album is a huge plus because I have always been a huge fan of his picking. This is definetly a good disk to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent CD.......2007-05-07

I have really been enjoying this CD. It certainly meets the high expectations I have for this group!! I want to see them live now more than ever.

4 out of 5 stars Woohoo for Waterloo!.......2007-04-16

I like that this cd has its dark moments (The Last Goodbye, My Epitaph, The Birds were Singing of You), but also manages to find room to get frisky (Black-Eyed Susie, Streak O' Lean/Streak of Fat, Easy in the Early). I often find myself effortlessly identifying with the characters in these songs. The vocal chemistry of these gals is extraordinary and I like the steady rotation of lead vocal duties. And of course, this cd is packed full of fiddles, banjos, violins, acoustic guitars, and mandolins which are played just as sharply as the singing. A sterling addition to any bluegrass collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2007-04-11

Uncle Earl again showed excellent talent. If you like old timey music or more traditional blue grass, you will fall in love with these girls.

The star-crossed fracture of London's much-hyped, woefully short-lived Libertines initially yielded the mixed blessings of Pete Doherty's ongoing, tabloid-chronicled flirtation with self-annihilation and Down in Albion the brilliant debut of the singer's new band, Baby Shambles. But while the charms of this, the first effort by ex-Libertines guitarist/songwriter Carl Barat's own new crew, are considerably more straight-forward than Doherty's art-for-art's-sake conceits, they're no less energetically bracing or lyrically barbed. Indeed, it's Barat's efforts here that often seem to be carrying the Libertines' jangled punk-pop mantle forward via the infectious pop charms of the single "Bang Bang You're Dead" (a poison-pen kiss-off to ex-bandmate Doherty, replete with a playful New Orleans jazz-wake intro) or careening thrash-ups like "Gin & Milk" and "You F*cking Love It." Those extremes may outline the musical boundaries of DPT's debut, but it's what lies in between that's just as intriguing, whether it's the moody music hall-meets-dancehall charms of the downright Albion-esque "The Gentry Cove," the scathing broadside "Doctors & Dealers," "The Enemy's" schizoid-bop or the angular, ranting "If You Love a Woman," a song that distills the essence of three decades of energetic garage-punk angst into as many minutes. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Babyshambles.......2007-04-17

I can honestly say that Dirty Pretty Things is better than Babyshambles. I have both 'Waterloo to Anywhere' and 'Down In Albion' and I can honestly tell you if you had to choose between the two at a store, choose the first, I went out to get Down in Albion but i didnt have enough money so I got Waterloo to Anywhere, I was not dissapointed, then I bought Down In Albion a short while later, and I feel it was short of Pete Doherty's potential. Carl barat is a genius which will be remembered long after his career comes to an end, which hopefully is not anytime soon. So go out and get Waterloo To Anywhere, you'll fall in love with it. The U.S. version does not include B.U.R.M.A. however.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait.......2007-01-27

I may, *perhaps*, be biased about this album for a few reasons. For one, I am a HUGE fan of Carl Barat, and, secondly, I saw them live at two separate venues, met the band at a signing, and third, Mr. Barat gave me a kiss! However, I had purchased the album as an import months beforehand and had already formed my own opinion...which was merely enhanced by my experience!

Carl hadn't released much material since The Libertines' last album, so I had been rather eager (and impatient) to hear what his new band would sound like. The album is, unfortunately, short (under 40 minutes), but all of the songs are quality tracks, and that matters a great deal more than the length of the album. "Waterloo to Anywhere" is more satisfying than Babyshambles' "Down in Albion" in many respects; none of the tracks sound out of place or mediocre. The choice of radio songs from this album has been wise, since "Bang Bang, You're Dead", "Deadwood", and "Wondering" are all catchy and enjoyable.

The most immediate contrast that I noticed with DPT over The Libertines is that all of the instruments have major roles. The Libertines was all about Pete and Carl. Though Carl is the frontman, Didz, Anthony, and Gary are all equal contributers to the music! Gary was already a good drummer in The Libertines and has gotten even better in DPT. John Hassall, bassist in The Libertines, often took a backseat to Pete and Carl's impassioned performance, so he often just went along with whatever guitar riffs they were playing. Didz, on the other hand, is in the spotlight nearly as often as Carl! Anthony is also a capable guitarist, and both him and Didz provide backing vocals on several songs. Carl was often cast aside with Pete acting like the "lead" in The Libertines. Though they both shared the responsibilities of songwriting, singing, and composing, one might've guessed that Pete was the lead from watching The Libertines' interviews, which he tended to dominate.

Though I personally feel that Pete Doherty is an amazingly talented human being, so is Carl! DPT has been Carl's chance to finally get the recognition that he deserves. At the same time, Carl lets his band-mates share the stage as well; they aren't merely accessories to "the main act". As I have seen from interviews, and from meeting him personally, Carl has a very humble nature, despite being so musically adept and charming. Though I believe that The Libertines were one of the greatest bands of the 2000s, perhaps EVER, the band would've surely fallen apart eventually, even if Carl hadn't made the decision to remove Pete from the band. Pete's increasingly cavalier attitude and unfortunate drug habit put The Libertines in horrible jeopardy, and thus it was time for Carl and Pete to go on their separate ways.

Though the import is more expensive, I think it might be preferable to this American version, as it includes one rather good extra track: BURMA! The order of tracks is different on the American version as well, for whatever reason. A certain import version also includes a concert DVD with the album, but the quality of the recording isn't that good.

3 out of 5 stars 1/2 OF THE LIBERTINES= 1/2 AS GOOD AS THE LIBERTINES.......2007-01-10

WHO DIDN'T LOVE EARLY LIBERTINES WORK? I DID LIKE THIS ALBUM AS A WHOLE BETTER THAN THE BABYSHAMBLES ALBUM. IT SEEMED AS IF HALF THE TIME THEY TOOK THE SAFER ROUTE WITH THE SONG WRITING, USING WHAT WORKED WITH THE LIBERTINES, NOT ADDING ANYTHING NEW OR SUBSTANTIAL. IT'S NOT A BAD ALBUM, BUT IT HAS ALL BEEN DONE BEFORE BY THESE GUYS.

4 out of 5 stars reflections2.......2006-10-14

"I gave you the Midas touch/You turned round and scratched out my heart!" In my opinion you cannot understand Waterloo to Anywhere without seriously listening to Down in Albion. That is probably because I have them in rotation on my player. If there are flaws in either record it is the missing hand of the other master. But since Carl allegedly taught Peter the wherefore's of the guitar I'll give him the benefit of the doubt about who is the better tunesmith. I can't wait until the get back in the studio together.

4 out of 5 stars This US release is a better value, but is missing one track.......2006-09-12

The track listing for this album is:

1. "Deadwood" - 2:28
2. "Doctors and Dealers" - 3:18
3. "Bang Bang You're Dead" - 3:33
4. "Blood Thirsty B*stards" - 3:11
5. "The Gentry Cove" - 2:32
6. "Gin & Milk" - 3:06
7. "The Enemy" - 3:36
8. "If You Love a Woman" - 3:13
9. "You F*cking Love It" - 1:54
10. "Wondering" - 2:54
11. "Last of the Small Town Playboys" - 3:31

(Song titles edited by me)

The first single from the group's debut album is "Bang Bang You're Dead", a catchy Britpop track which sounds eerily like Herman's Hermits or even the Beatles at times. The lyrics are very simple and repetitive, which of course ensures that the song sticks in your head. If you don't believe me check the chorus which goes "Bang bang you're dead / Oh I'm so easily lead / Bang bang you're dead / Put all the rumours to bed / Bang bang you're dead"

Second single "Deadwood" is a very short track that leads off the album, a guitar driven track showcasing the talent of Carl Barat, formerly of The Libertines and now front man for Dirty Pretty Things on this debut album. The third single is intended to be the track "Wondering".

Other tracks worth mentioning are "Doctors and Dealers"; "The Gentry Cove" (which sounds like it should accompany a Monty Python movie) and "Gin & Milk", but unfortunately too many of the tracks sound alike to make this album outstanding.

This is the US version which is less than half the price of the UK version, but alas, it only has 11 tracks. (The last track B.U.R.M.A. didn't make it) However, given the price difference it's probably worth getting the US version.

4 out of 5 stars Better Watch Out..........2007-07-12

This album was ABBA's second one after "Ring Ring" that wasn't so successful. The songs "Waterloo", "Honey, Honey", and the peaceful track "Hasta Mañana" made this album so famous...there's however other great tracks: "My Mama Said", "What About Livingstone", "Watch Out", and the ballad "Gonna Sing You My Lovesong". This album is a pearl of pop music and very valuable for that...there's some songs like "Sitting in the Palmtree" and "King Kong Song" which may be cute and funny but not good musically.
Stars: Hasta Mañana, Honey, Honey, Waterloo, Watch Out

5 out of 5 stars ABBA Rulz!!.......2006-08-08

Waterloo was only their second album and they were still discovering their sound. This one has a lot of memories of playing it on 8 track over and over on the way to and from my grandma's house. It will forever be one of my favorite ABBA albums. I'm so happy that they have restored the entire album (US release) on CD reuniting it with Ring Ring (1974 us remix). The album is great from start to finish with not a single weak song. I would recommend this CD as well as their entire catalog to everyone young and old alike!

4 out of 5 stars It was different, but great!.......2006-07-02

"Waterloo" is a good album. I doesn't really sound like ABBA but the songs are still good. "Suzy Hang Around" is sort of cheesy in a way, but still an OK song. My favorite song is "Watch Out."
Best Song: Watch Out
Worst Song: My Mama Said
If you buy this album, hope you enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite ABBA album.......2006-05-25

Although it's not quite a typical ABBA album, a broad range of sounds is presented here. The catchy title track opens the album powerfully. Sitting In The Palmtree has a reggae feel to it. King Kong Song features guitar amps cranked to 11, and is the hardest rocking song ABBA's ever recorded by far. Although some of the songs have corny lyrics (especially the aforementioned King Kong Song), they are all enjoyable nonetheless for their melodies, and the album as a whole is filled with very listenable and original-sounding pop songs.

4 out of 5 stars One of ABBA's overlooked albums.......2005-11-07

I remember when ABBA fever hit Australia. The current album at the time was titled ABBA, and the record shops quickly displayed their back catalogue as well - in fact, piles of copies. The cover of WAterloo always appealed to me because they all looked different, and the songs were largerly unknown. I eventually bought this album in 1978, and have to rate it as one of my favourites. The gems are really the album tracks such as "Watch Out" , "KIng Kong Song" and the very cathcy "What about Livingtone". I also love "Sitting in the Palmtree". Grab it and enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Exciting, non threatening, progressive rock.......2006-04-25

3 1/2 Stars

A fantastic introduction into some of the more easy-access audible virtues lying dormant in most non-progressive listener's mind's awaits in this humble concoction of potent songwriting mixed with technical prowess. The music, while feeling at times a bit dated (awfully hard to have escaped that curse for most prog bands in that nonetheless glorious musical era), balances itself out rather nicely as an accessible album on many levels. The material ranges from rockers to love songs, influenced over jazzy, jam based guidance, which never lets the sometimes overly catchy melodies get bogged down in repetition. This excellent balance between accessibility and technicality should have afforded this band more popularity.

5 out of 5 stars Lily of Rock.......2005-11-14

Many aren't too happy with Steve Miller filling in but his bass indeed pounds and reverberates in every track plus it gets funky the English way. This cd never wears me down and I keep on discoverong new sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Waterloo Lily.......2005-09-12

For the lovers of Caravan's music. This CD is an excellent production that brought me back in time. If you collect them, do not miss this one.

4 out of 5 stars Still good, but not as good as their previous album.......2002-09-04

Waterloo Lily marks the first lineup change in Caravan. David Sinclair left to briefly join Matching Mole. And a new keyboardist came in: Steve Miller, no, not the American Steve Miller who gave us The Joker and Fly Like an Eagle, but an Englishman named Steve Miller who was the brother of Matching Mole and Hatfield & the North's Phil Miller. As it's plainly obvious that Miller preferred the electric piano where D. Sinclair preferred the Hammond organ. The electric piano made Caravan move in to a more jazzy direction. And while Waterloo Lily isn't as good as In the Land of Grey & Pink, it still has some great material, like the title track, "The Love in Your Eye", and "Song & Signs". There tends to a bunch of lenghty jazzy jamming as well that might turn a few people off, but to me, it isn't bad. This was their first album to feature an orchestra as well, as demonstrated on "The Love in Your Eye". Sadly this was the last Caravan album to feature Richard Sinclair, as he would leave to join the likes of Hatfield & the North and Camel. While Waterloo Lily isn't the best album in Caravan's catalog, it's still well worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Caravan.......2000-08-03

This album is classic Caravan with a twist of jazz, compliments of keyboardist Steve Miller. Since Miller's playing is outstanding, Caravan does not seem to lose a beat with the temporary departure of Dave Sinclair (of Nine Feet Underground fame). Richard Sinclair and Pye Hastings are solid on vocals. The album's highlight is "The Love In Your Eye" suite, a true Caravan classic that again spotlights the band's musicianship and overall ability to craft long and intricate progressive rock songs. Highly recommended!

I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

At the moment I didn't received this CD! Why? It's a normal delay? (Remember that you sent me a wrong title, then I sent it back to you...and now? When I'll receive the right one, "Solitude Trilogy"?)

5 out of 5 stars Unlike Anything Else You Own.......2001-10-14

Between 1967 and 1977 a frighteningly gifted concert pianist focused his formidable energies on creating a symphony of sound using no instruments beyond an odd cacophony of unrehearsed and unscripted human voices. I know of no other recordings like these three journeys.

If you listen with your analytical left brain to the ebb and flow of the overlapping, recorded interviews of Gould's carefully chosen cast of characters, you will become profoundly frustrated, irritated and confused. In passages, the voices are mixed so equally as to become equally unintelligible. At other times, the background noises are a bit too loud for us to clearly discern the precise content of what is being said.

But the mood. Ah, the mood. If you will but listen with your artistic right brain and simply let the sound of it wash over you without trying to determine what it "means," you will gain deep and profound insight from each of these 3, 1-hour masterpieces that will stay with you for life. And each time you listen, you "get it" better and deeper than the time before. These works are neither documentary nor commentary in any traditional sense, but a strikingly human conveyance of time and place.

You can only hate them or love them.

I dearly love them, and believe that you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars one of the century's greatest.. composers?.......2001-08-24

this cd set is made up of three radio "documentaries" made by gould after he'd given up piano performance, ostensibly to pursue a career as a composer. while works such as his early string quartet are quite good, this is gould's real compositional output. critiqued as pieces of music, these could be called "sound collage", but a think a musical comparison that would give one a better sense as to where these could be placed are the operas of robert ashley. why? the original recordings are of speech, though there is no libreto -- all text is culled from interviews, collaged with other sounds, from ocean waves to janis joplin. the best of the three is probably, "the idea of north", which is glimpsed in "32 short films about glenn gould". if you liked that, get this!! -- one of the dearest recordings i own.

5 out of 5 stars Ray is a genius.......2005-12-01

My first concert was the kinks on the word of mouth tour and i seen them 4 times after that here in Chicago. I love Ray and the kinks and this album should be a must even for casual fans.It is brilliant if you appreciate the work of the eighties. Ray if you're out there someone in Chicago loves and supports you and all your endeavors.Get a new publicist because you are better than your're being led.

4 out of 5 stars Great companion piece to "Word of Mouth".......2005-09-22

It's a shame that this soundtrack is so obscure because it contains some of the Kinks' best '80s work. "Return to Waterloo" and "Expectations" are beautiful laments to a lost England in the spirit of the "Arthur" album. Both would have been assets to "Word of Mouth" but thematically fit in better here. "Lonely Hearts" is a fun '50s-style ballad, "Not Far Away" rocks out in the same punkish vein as "Sold Me Out," and "Voices in the Dark" works well as an atmospheric closer. All fine efforts. "Going Solo," "Missing Persons," and "Sold Me Out" are repeats from "WOM" of course, though the latter is present here in a slightly different edit.

The relative scarcity of new material is troubling (even padded with the three "WOM" tracks, there's about 30 minutes of music here), but the title track and "Expectations" belong in any Kinks library, and the other tracks are solidly enjoyable, especially if you're a fan of "Word of Mouth." Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Ray Davies Explores Familiar Territory.......2005-03-01

This album, first released twenty years ago, is a Kinks album in everything but name. As such, it is the only solo studio album by Ray Davies. However, the musicians credited on the album comprise the then-current lineup of The Kinks: Ian Gibbons (synths & keyboards), Jim Rodford (bass), and Bob Henritt and original member Mick Avory on drums. [Although brother Dave is not credited, three of these songs--"Going Solo," "Sold Me Out" and "Missing Persons"--first appeared on 1984's WORD OF MOUTH.]

This only leaves five new songs that are from a long out-of-print soundtrack to a film written and directed by the Kinks' frontman. The title track is a terrific song tinged with nostalgia and regret. [One of Ray's favorite themes.] "Lonely Hearts" is a touching ballad, but not one of Ray's first-rate efforts. "Not Far Away" is a punchy rocker railing against the conformity of society. In "Expectations," Ray laments how England has let him down. "Voices in the Dark" has Ray exploring the feeling of loneliness. [Favorite line: "A voice that has no face/Is lost in time and inner space/Chasing dreams that got lost in the dark.]

Lyrically there's nothing really new here. Ray has explored these themes before on albums like VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY and ARTHUR. But if you passed on this album when it was first released, there is a hole in your Kinks collection. While it has a running time of just over thirty-one minutes, there are enough good songs to justify its purchase. RECOMMENDED

3 out of 5 stars A disappoiting set.......2005-02-23

I would easily hand out 5 stars for the invidual songs of this CD because Ray Davies really believed in the "Return To Waterloo" television play he wrote and produced in 1983. The songs are very good but the reason I give 3 stars is the lack of bonus material.
Kinksfans had to wait for 20 years for this album to come out on CD and were hoping that Ray Davies could be persuaded to add some unreleased songs to the tracklist. The album was already relatively short on needle time and the original television play bolstered some songs that were not on the original vinyl album. Those songs could have fitted nicely on this CD. Instead we have a CD lasting some 30 minutes missing some very nice key tracks.

William Makepeace Thackery's mid-19th-century meditation on the boundaries of class and gender gets a smartly sympathetic remake via Indian director Mira Nair and Reese Witherspoon, who imbues the story's social-climbing Becky Sharp with some of the same spunky spirit the actress brought to Legally Blonde's equally ambitious Elle. Composer Mychael Danna furthers that sense of era-bridging drama with an orchestral score that sets the story's time and place via effective pastiches of Schubert and Beethoven (that's Danna himself channeling a little Ludwig van on the evocative solo piano passages "Andante" and "Adagio"), yet often fuses them seamlessly with a modern sensibility that helps story's contemporary parallels resonate all the more. The soundtracks four songs revolve around poles of Romantic-era evocations (Danna's stately adaptations of Lord Byron's sonnet "She Walks in Beauty" and the standard "Great Adventurer") and the lively East Asian rhythms of Hakim's "El Salaam" and Mahadevan/Sharma's sprightly duet, "Gori Re." But Danna's masterful infusion of 19th century classical Romanticism with the dry, postmodern instincts of the 21st are the score's most compelling achievements, music that argues that while times and mores have changed, the human spirit remains as stubborn as ever. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars tis a chick flick.......2006-05-22

Vanity Fair..A feast for the eyes...and hardly a true period piece! SO the music is a bit out of sync...It is still fabulous and for the musical snobs..I too happen to a VERY learned "chantuese".. and in my opinion Custer Larues'. Crimson petal is anything But wimpy...It is meant to be whispery..and provocative..there is nothing uncertain at all about it...MUCH control there..!
Becky Sharp is a character that many women adore because she is STRONG and ruthless! Who cares if the movie was not dead on accurate..It was truly enjoyable...ANd I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal - historical correctness.......2005-11-13

I did like this movie... but I'm not going to pretend that it stuck to the book or was even remotely historically correct. I loved the song "Now sleeps the crimson petal," but I did want to clear up some things about it. I've been looking for the sheet music and it doesn't appear to exist. There are about 7 people who have written songs based on Tennyson's poem, but this version was written by Mychael Danna, does not even closely resemble Roger Quilter or Robert Young. Mychael Danna did nearly the entire soundtrack and he is wonderful. I just wish i could find the sheet music.

4 out of 5 stars Now sleeps the crimson petal..........2005-08-10

Why bother about historical accuracy at all? The scene where Becky sings "Now sleeps the crimson petal" is probably the most memorable and moving scene of the whole film. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Indeed -- Crimson Petal in -what- year?.......2005-04-03

I very much enjoyed the soundtrack (much, much more than the movie) for what it was -- some beautifully done music. I don't know enough about composition to relate different styles to different periods (my knowledge goes about as far as "dissonant=modern"), but I -do- know literature, and just want to note that "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" is a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, published in 1847 -- which would be WELL after Becky Sharpe sung it in the movie, even with all the bizarre time-jumping going on in it. This in no way diminishes the song's beauty, and I love the poem for itself -- but just wanted to add a few grains of salt to the historical accuracy of the soundtrack, which remains, to my ear, quite beautiful.

A further quirk to me was the "Salaam" song, which is sung in Arabic. Still enjoyable (though it made NO SENSE in the movie), but I feel it's worth noting that it's not any dialect of Indian.

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal in WHAT YEAR?.......2005-02-21

As a retired professional classical musician, I have strong attitudes about music. I greatly enjoyed this film version of Vanity Fair, and think Reese Witherspoon was wonderful, as were most of the actors. The music, though, was odd to say the least. For me the "Crimson Petal" song (and the whole movie scene in which it was heard) was a low point, because the song was obviously from the late twentieth century or the early twenty-first, and did not belong in the movie at all. I suspect that the reason the moviemakers got away with this is that with the general decline in interest in classical music, nobody knows any more what kind of music came from which era. Well, I think I do know - though I am ready to stand corrected if someone can explain that there really was a song from the Napoleonic era that had all this chromaticism, etc. in it. I did appreciate the fact that when Becky Sharp/Reese Witherspoon was supposed to be singing, her voice was rather wimpy and uncertain; it would not have been believable to have her singing with fabulous line and breath support. I agree with the other reviewer that Sissel's "She Walks In Beauty" was a high point.
I suggest that people might look into real period song collections and skip the movie music in this instance.

One of the all-time country greats who is often overlooked these days. In this cd, you get a sampling of the hits and classic album cuts from the 50's and early 60's. Stonewalls music is "real country" at it's very best.
