Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

Can't stop listening to this album.......2006-11-03

I enjoyed swing out sister in the 80's--but wasn't sure what they would sound like twenty years later..WOW! I just bought this album and "Where does our love grow", and I can't stop listening to them. Their sound is much more sophisticated and this music "draws you in" as another person commented earlier. Am sooo glad I decided to re-visit this group again..

Elegant, Incredible album.......2006-10-13

This one slipped through my radar, until a week ago! Described as haunting, you can see the curtains blowing gently in the window on a hot parisian night. The vocals are stunning, the background on some songs are spellbinding. I am a 40 year old married man and have been hooked on SOS since the get go. Somewhere deep in the night has me mesmorized and fantasizing about being with a special someone 'deep in the night'Worth every penny and even better than 'Where our love grows'

I'll keep this short - if you like Bacharach, have discovered Francis Lai, have explored Michel Legrand, are hooked on Dusty, are interested in Morricone, appreciate what John Barry has done apart from Bond and are most likely over 30, then this collection was probably written and produced with you in mind. A highly cinematic offering, with a flow that makes it sound like a proper 'concept' album (to me it does, anyway!), I discovered this from a buddy in the States 5 years ago and haven't gone more than a few weeks since without hearing it.

i always loved swing out sister from the late 80's. i did lose touch with the group over the past 10 years. i recently bough this cd after being reunited with swing out sister via their live album several months ago. this cd is a must have. it embodies all the elements missing from so much music today-- stellar vocals, outstanding instrumentation, and flawless production.

One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

The Greatest Tenor.......2004-05-25

I'm more a fan of classic popular standards than of classical music, but as the classical numbers give Mario Lanza a little more opportunity to show off his glorious voice, I find myself enjoying these fully as much as the popular selections.

His approach to popular song is admittedly on the operatic side, and it's fascinating to hear how well such pieces translate into a more classical orchestration. And Lanza's versions stand as equals alongside the popular versions (by such greats as Perry Como, Frankie Laine, Kate Smith, Georgia Gibbs, Dean Martin, Vic Damone and Vaughn Monroe) that have been among my favorites for many years.

The spoken introductions on the selections from his show are an added bonus, and (contrary to one of the reviews below) these songs are beautifully done. The fact that they are live and only minimally rehearsed only makes them all the more amazing.

The 2-cd set consists of high quality recordings of 47 songs and is a real bargain at the price.

The good and the bad in one collection.......2001-09-02

This is (unintentionally, I'm sure) a warts-and-all illustration of Mario Lanza. True, there are magnificent recordings scattered throughout (Serenade, Beloved, E Lucevan Le Stelle, Passione, etc) but the overall impression one is left with is of a sloppy and undisciplined singer who just happened to possess a great voice. The fault lies squarely with BMG and their predilection for selecting the very worst of Lanza, and placing it next to the best. Many of the inferior choices come from Lanza's Coca-Cola radio show, recorded between 1951 and 1952, and featuring prominently on Disc Two. (Disc One is a more consistent selection, and repeats the same tracks from the British one-CD set "The Ultimate Collection", reviewed elsewhere on this site.)

The "Coke" shows were generally under-rehearsed, and represent what in many respects was the most chaotic period of Lanza's short life. Thus it's not surprising that the tenor often sounds unfamiliar with his material, is sometimes off-key, and also makes numerous stylistic lapses. Never intended to be heard beyond their initial broadcast, these supposedly "one-off affairs" nevertheless did produce the occasional gem, but one needs to look elsewhere for examples of those. The three exceptions on this set are the gloriously romantic If I Loved You, One Night of Love, and the poignant Memories. Danny Boy also deserves honorable mention, although the ending should have been remade.

O Paradiso, Somewhere a Voice is Calling, Core 'Ngrato, Deep in My Heart, and With a Song in My Heart represent low points from the Coke Shows. Other poor choices include And This is My Beloved, from the disastrous Lanza on Broadway LP; a rough-as-old-boots Una Furtiva Lagrima; and an off-pitch Cielo E Mar (ironically the one studio recording on this set that *is* inferior to Lanza's Coke Show rendition).

Mario Lanza was blessed with the most spectacular natural tenor voice of the 20th century. Is it too much to expect for BMG to honor his memory more selectively? Where are Lanza's sublime recordings of Che Gelida Manina from "La Boheme", his M'appari, the Improvviso from Andrea Chenier and his unsurpassed Otello Monologue? Or the fabulous Some Day, the gorgeous 'A Vucchella and Lanza's own favorite recording, the haunting Voce E Notte? For the very best of Mario Lanza, buyers will need to look elsewhere.

New Fan.......2000-08-27

I am an 18-year old student. I bought this album after I heard a few of Lanza's songs in the Peter Jackson film, "Heavenly Creatures" and I must say that it is one of the best albums I have ever bought. Lanza was a master of his vocal instrument, drawing every ounce of feeling and energy from the notes and words to create a masterpiece of every song. The resulting pieces in this album combine to make up a beautiful and varied work, with something for every mood you may be in. The classics (such as "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life"), are obviously appealing, but the lesser-known pieces (my favourite: "Una Furtiva Lagrima") make this a wonderfully enlightening experience. This is a truly Great album.

Another CD from the best!.......2000-03-18

When I heard that Mario Lanza had died so many years ago, I was a college student who already owned five or six LP's of his songs. I was truly brokenhearted We had lost such a fine singer at such an early age. This CD is one of the best because of the diversity of songs, all marvelous.A fine addition to any collection.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! SOS come full circle............2004-02-01

I have been a fan of Swing out Sister for years now and have always fell in & out of love with them. This album is an "In Love" rating for me! Right from the first cut "Through The Sky", they seem to really be taking you on a journey...A trip that seems reflective of almost all of thier past efforts. If you listen closely you can definately hear remnants of "Its Better To Travel", "Kaleidoscope World", "The Living Return" and so on. Swing Out Sisters' one unfailed characteristic is that they always sound like THEMSELVES. This album reminds me that they even sound like their early selves.....like they have come full circle. Highlights are "Through The Sky", "Will We Find Love", "Where The Hell Did I Go Wrong?", & "Touch Me Now". But don't get me wrong.....the whole effort is incredible! They will always have my heart whether I like it or not!!!

An album you could make a movie out of ..........2007-06-05

I have been a SOS fan since the begining, but feel they have improved with each release. This album is a sound / land scape of cinematic images, strings, unbelievable production and vocals. Interludes, instrumentals - truly hypnotic. Every time i hear certain songs from this i get goose bumps - makes you wonder if they knew in the studio just how good this was going to turn out. Great to listen to while traveling in a car, or headphones for that all - encompassing sound. Truly fantastic!!!

Disappointed!.......2002-02-04

This CD is not like ANY of their previous releases, and I am a HUGE SOS fan. My advice is that you try to sample all the cuts from some source before you buy. Too many of the cuts are spacey and go nowhere. There are a few that start out like they might be OK and take you somewhere, but then they just seem to fade away. And I paid the import price to boot, yet.

Another Extraordinary Album from Swing Out Sister.......2002-01-13

This new album is another musical jewel of this british pop group, specially due the outstanding and romantic voice of Corinne Drewery, the excellent keyboard/synth passages from Andy Connell and finally because of the extraordinary string & horn orchestra arrengements included.
These 14 new tracks confirm that Swing Out Sister is keeping the same fusion style between musical rhythms like pop-rock, jazz and romantic ballad, with some deep and extremely beautiful lyrics; as well as a great performance of Nigel Hitchcock on the sax. This is an album that surely you must hear hundred times, to discover all the shades and effects that SOS is offering to music lovers like you....

La Creme De La Creme!.......2002-01-05

Thank God this group did not throw in the towel and call it quits just because they did not reach commercial success in North America. If so then we loyal SOS fans would be deprived of their wonderful music.

I can say without a doubt that this is the best album they have put out, yes even among the previous releases. With many other artists their first album is the best and then they just start to go down hill from there. Not so with Swing Out Sister like a vintage wine they just continue to get better with time. Colleen has such a beautiful voice and Andy's arrangements are pricelless.

Don't be dissuaded by the high price, this CD is worth every penny that it costs. This is a must for any SOS fan. Or any one else who wants to hear the magical sounds of yester year.

Night music........2001-11-13

Put it on. Layed back and listened. Felt like I was listening to "Kalidoscope World 2". Some instumentals ala "The Swingle Singers"; think "The Graduate", some Bacharach like arrangements and all the things that Swing Out Sister reminds you of. No suprises, except "What Kind of Fool Are You?" and "Where the Hell Did I Go Wrong" and how they're worth just getting the album for. They feel like you've heard these songs before; brilliant, and wise. Thank God for this group. Wish they'd tour in the states,...and wish they made an album with a band backing them again.
