Ringo Starr's post-Beatles music has relied on allusions to his legendary past. Indeed, the very first line of "Eye to Eye," the melodic hard rocker that opens Ringorama, asks, "Remember when I said 'it don't come easy'?" On the country-tinged "Write One for Me," guest vocalist Willie Nelson name checks the Fabs' "Yesterday." And, strangely, "English Garden," the final track, very obviously borrows from "Let ‘Em In," the 1976 Paul McCartney & Wings hit. But the Beatles reference that will undoubtedly touch the most fans is "Never Without You," a tribute to George Harrison that features some nice '60s pop flourishes and a familiar-sounding Eric Clapton guitar solo. In its own way, it's as fine a tribute to George as the latter’s "All Those Years Ago" was to John Lennon. Most of Starr’s songwriting today is done with producer Mark Hudson, who also cowrote his last solo effort, 1998's Vertical Man, and who’s always acknowledged a strong Beatles influence in his own material. Pink Floyd's David Gilmour manages to get the great rock drummer mighty revved up on "I Think, Therefore I Rock & Roll," while the catchy "Missouri Loves Company" and "Memphis in Your Mind" should remind all doubtful listeners that Ringo’s had some classic pop moments of his own over the years. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Back.......2006-02-20

As much as we would like not to, we all have to admit that none of Ringo Starr's albums from 'Ringo' up until 'Vertical Man' were any good. This album continues on with the limited success the 'Vertical Man' met, although I personally find it much better. My key track- the amazingly haunting 'Never Without You', Starr's beautiful tribute to George Harrison with Eric Clapton playing a guitar solo. Best wishes, enjoy it, and as Ringo would say, 'love and peace'.

5 out of 5 stars Don't look past this one! Superb songs, artistry, sound, arangments, and voice........2005-10-25

This ranks as one of the best post Beatle's albums to date; either by John, Paul, George, or Ringo. And INSTANT AMNESIA is the best Rockin' tune for sure. One can listen to it over and over and still hear something new and exciting. The lowest ranking song is WRITE TO ME only becuase Willie Nelson's singing isn't that great (what else is new). The rest of the songs are five stars. Ringo gets excellent help from Dean Grakal, Gary Burr, Mark Hudson, Barbara Starkey, and Steve Dudas in every song on this collection. In an interview while making this album, Ringo claims that he had the other musicians recorded the songs while in one small room. He says he believes playing togther while recording is better than in seperate rooms and by overlaying tracks. With this recordings I agree. The feel and sound of a collection of professional rockers and artist comes through. Way to go RINGO!

4 out of 5 stars Ringo was always my favorite Beatle........2005-04-20

I have to say; pretty darn good. Like all of Ringo's albums, features a flashing array of guest appearances, most notable of which on this album, Eric Clapton. Ringo has probably the best drumming on this album, since... Forever! And his voice is in primo condition, too. The songs are really easy to get stuck in your head. A must-buy for any Beatles/Ringo Starr fan.

4 out of 5 stars Ringo Doesn't Disappoint.......2005-04-15

At his best, Ringo always reminds me of the mid-70's, when anything seemed possible with the Beatles. It seemed Ringo would bring them together. Didn't happen, of course. But not for want, I believe, of Ringo trying. The least talented of the 4, but funny, I like his albums best.

5 out of 5 stars Oh! This is it..........2004-10-07

... I usually find I like the solo albums but most of them aren't on par with Beatles albums. I think there are exceptions, and this is the biggest one. On this album, Ringo successfully recreates the sound of a late period Beatles album. Well, the rockers have a lot in common with the sound of the psychedelic era Beatles. And most importantly all the rockers are fun. But the other side to this album is the gentle folk-ballads that are often really touching. A lot of these songs wouldn't be out of place on the George Harrison album, especially Imagine me there and What Love wants to be. I think this was a deliberate strategy to help remember the musical legacy of George Harrison. Like Vertical Man, Ringo Rama has an Indian inspired number that harkens back to the mid-late 60's when Beatles albums had a George number that was Indian-influenced, for example Love you to or Within you without you. Oh, by the way, Ringo's tribute to Harrison is very simple, honest and touching. But, seriously, here we are Forty Years after they debuted with Please Please Me, who then would have predicted that Ringo Starr would come out with a brilliant solo album exactly Forty years on. OK it's now 2004 but when this album was recorded/released, it was 2003. At 63 years of age Ringo can rock as hard as anyone. His drumming is very prominent and impressive on this album. The best song is the uptempo party rocker I think therefore I rock n roll. Other standouts are Imagine me there (It's like a slower version of Blow Away), the Indian inspired Love first, ask questions later, the drum-heavy Instant Amnesia, Eye to Eye, What love wants to be, the lovely coutnry rocker Write one for me, with a guest appearance from Willie Nelson, and Never without you. Well, they're my favourites.

To my mind this is perhaps the most essential Beatles Solo album, seriously songs like Eye to Eye, Elizabeth Reigns and Tripping on my own tears would all fit on Revolver, some may even fit on Sergeant Pepper. Not only that, George has died and the tribute Never Without You recounts the days when they were "The Beatles" and talks about how they felt at the time. It's very interesting. Well, it's my vote for the best of the solo albums, though my personal favourite is probably Bad Boy, but I woudln't recommend Bad Boy, it's hard to get into, not like Ringo Rama.
