Amazon.com

For years, the recording industry has asked fans to purchase the same music from the 1960s and '70s over and over again, via remasterings, repackagings, and, of course, reformattings. The Doors' box Perception (get it?), cleverly packaged as... a door, does hold some astonishing music, but the thing itself is a weird hybrid beast with multiple formats for every release. Each of the group's six albums has not only been re-remastered (this time by the remaining band members plus original engineer Bruce Botnick as the "40th anniversary mix"), but loaded up with a bevy of previously unreleased bonus tracks. But that's not it--for each album, there's a companion DVD, which includes a whole new 5.1 surround sound mix with more tracks, as well as the usual DVD extras, i.e., photo galleries, lyrics, and videos. That makes 12 discs, much of it essentially redundant. If you're cool with that, you're in for a treat. From the spookier, unissued version of "Indian Summer" to the entirely new tune "Push Push" and some super-rad footage of the band rehearsing L.A. Woman, it's easy to fall in love with this swirling, highly sexualized, and often brilliant band all over again. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Help me out here..........2007-05-14

OK, now I purchased the Perception Box set several months ago. However, my discs are not the 40th anniversary mixes. They are, however, unbelievably remastered just as perfectly and everything exactly the same and clear as the 40th anniversary mixes, however, not a single track on any of the disks is the 40th anniversary version. They are just as remastered and perfect sounding as those on the 40th anniversary discs, however, they contain none of the extra musical or vocal parts in them as the 40th ones do. Were there two releases or do I have a set equivalent to having a book or coin that was printed upside down (if you understand what I mean). If someone can help me out here, that'd be great.

4 out of 5 stars Ray needs a new house........2007-05-10

It was a nice afternoon in Dallas on that November day. President Kennedy's motorcade made that fateful turn in front of the Schoolbook Depository building and into Dealy Plaza, and after the cracking of gunfire everything about a world of hope and promise died.

To celebrate this moment in history Rhino records and WEA release "Perceptions" a 12 (6 cd and 6 DVD) set containing all of the studio albums from their self-titled debut to L.A. Woman. Each album has been re-mastered (again) but a new twist has been added. All the recordings have been re-mixed in 5.1 surround sound audio with bonus videos and tracks. Each album is placed in a nice digipack case with a booklet and liner notes with the CD's on the one side and DVD-A discs on the other.

If you're looking to upgrade from your vinyl than this is for you. It's a new experience made even more special due to the fact that the first album has been mastered at the correct speed this time as opposed to the hundred other times they could have done it. The 5.1 mixes a little dodgy on the first and second albums in fact "Strange Days" has some bizarre instrument placement, leveling problems, and the Jim Morrison's "moog" effected voice on the titled track is missing. This is strange (pardon the pun) due to the fact that this album was recorded on eight track, so mixing options were a little more flexible than the first album but it really doesn't match the feel of the original 2 track mix. But don't worry you have the 2 track mix on the CD side of the slipcase. As for the first album, it was cut on a 4 track machine so getting a surround mix is pretty much out of the question so the rear speakers have a lot of reverb to give more of a sense of space. Again if you bought the last box set you really do not need this unless you just got to hear these recordings in 5.1 then go right ahead. I bought this because I wanted to upgrade from my 2nd generation CD's.

Everything from "Waiting For The Sun" to "L.A. Woman sound pretty good in 5.1 but nothing earth shattering. I still believe that multichannel audio is still in its infancy and too many engineers are basically re-mixing just to show what can be done with 5.1 instead of tailoring a mix that enhances the listening experience without destroying the feel of the original 2 track mix.

Overall it is a decent box set albeit a bit pricey. And worth having if your upgrading but if that's not the case, save your money and get something else.

5 out of 5 stars great boxset.......2007-05-09

Awesome boxset, loads of extras, great remastering job and a cool boxset design. If you want the best fullest versions of the Doors albums here's your set.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth the price and effort in getting this box set.......2007-04-06

Yes even having to pay the full price from Amazon (and not setling for a second-hand used item at a much lower price), it was definitely worth paying and waiting for this box set to arrive all the way to Japan. Highly recommended for all Doors Fans!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Box Set.......2007-04-05

I have collected The Doors up for some 30 years & again they release a box set of their classic studio albums. The packaging is superb & they added DVD's to the mix which could have been better but overall, a nice collection with bonus tracks included. If you really want a nice but simpler package, try the last box set with basically re-mixed material as these recordings. so what is next? the complete "Live" recordings box set? Ya never know ;-) Search "Judemac Forever" on msn.

5 out of 5 stars Follow me down..........2007-05-16

Quite simply, outstanding!

I'll be the first to admit, at 28, I'm a young Doors fan. I grew up with kids in the late 80's and early 90's who worshipped the Doors, especially Jim, as their messiah, and I never got it. I've known their hits, enjoyed them, and that's kinda where it stopped. I didn't even own a Doors record (The Doors) until I was in college in '99... that's when I started to understand what was so great. However, I never investigated further.

This past year, at the end of '06, the Perceptions box set came out and I made it my mission to save and buy it, 'cause my old copy the The Doors sounded horrible. Well, before I knew it, it was gone, but thank you Warner for atleast re-issuing it ASAP in a slimmed down, frill-less box.

I now own the best box I've ever owned. I've read all the reviews for the LTD version, from people saying it's a waste of money compared to previous Doors boxes (fools!), to the the 5.1 mixes being poor (fools again!), to everything being redundant (yeah, but between 2 formats, not on the same disc or anything). Here's my opinion... this is AWESOME! Seriously. I haven't even touched the CD's yet. The 5.1 high-res audio mixes are blowing my mind, not to mention, for me, the exposure to a whole slew of songs I've never heard before. Sure, The Doors doesn't benefit much from 5.1, but the high-resolution is what makes it better than any other mix you've ever heard previously. Starting at Strange Days you can start to hear clever use 5.1. Never anything to be distracting, but maybe just some good ambience, or background vocals actually being in the back. The real fun starts at Waiting For The Sun and Soft Parade. Those two, in 5.1 high-res are leaving me breathless. I carry on rediculously to my girlfriend about the clarity of the mixes and little nuances to the point where she's just ignoring me!

If you can't tell yet, I'm a huge fan of DVD-A's and high-res sound (SACD as well). I've heard some people complain about 5.1 mixes, from saying that it ruins an original recording (too fancy, sounds swirling around), to there's nothing but abmience and it's nothing special (nothing fancy, no sounds swirling around). I think it's obvious when listenin gto this what the band and engineers intentions were. To place you in the studio, or in the case of some songs, sort of... transport you into the heart of the music. I got sucked in. I heard someone say it wasn't as good as Beatles' Love. Well, Love is all studio trickery my friend, based on original Beatles songs. That is not, in any way, how the Beatles intended for those songs to be heard. These are easily as good as DVD-A's for Eagles' Hotel California and Queen's Night At The Opera.

Anyway... enough rambling. Go to a high-end stereo shop, ask if they have it as a demo to hear it properly. Don't use MP3's as a basis for this. Borrow it from a friend, or better yet, trust a strangers opinion and buy this for an amazing listen. If you're already a Doors fan and you think you've heard this stuff before and this won't be a reason for you to dig out your collection any more often, you're wrong. Sell your old stuff (even your LP's, they're re-releasing those in August '07!) and get this. You'll never be happier.

I am a big BUOS fan since Home. Sadly, I cannot help but agree that this album has been put together in a rush for some strange purpose. The songs are devoid of upbeat and inspirational melody and rythm, and are basically disjoint pieces ou mildly interesting sounds assembled. I thought twice before giving 1 star, but I think this will contribute to balance the overall score which, up to now, has been somewhat misleading. I'm also very demanding beacause I'm a real fan of the band. So I guess I'm entitled to firmly express my dislike for this one and expect to shock the guys into coming up with a cd in the line of first two, if they ever come across this review.

4 out of 5 stars best cd in a while.......2006-01-30

i like buos. their cd "home" is one of the ten i would take to an island for all time. top to bottom solid cd. since "home" the discs have either had holes or are just kind of mediocre. "perception" hearkens back to "home" and i dig it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic effort, Blessed to have them back.......2005-10-12

10 years later and Blessid Union is stronger than ever. From the opener "Could Have Been With You" to the wrenching bookend "I Was Never Here" the band has poured more heart, soul and musicianship into this record than any of their previous efforts. Thank God that that this record wasn't overly produced or being handel by a major label other wise it would have been like all the other fly-by-nights acts being shoveled into the mindless MTVers who really believe that that dribble is what's worthwhile. Could some of the tracks have been a little more polished? Sure, but after you really take a listen having them anyother way would be a shame. Lyricly that album is staggering.
Just like songs like "Nora" from HOME, there are songs on PERCEPTION That are painfully real. In a good way. "I Have Just Begun To Live" is a powerful testament to Eloit's faith in God. The haunting "Let's Get Out of Here" referenceing a couples post abortion efforts to keep it together is heart wrentching. "..My Little Friend" & "I Still Believe In Love" are a beautiful window into this band. If you're into music for quality and not quanity then Blessid Union delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary.......2005-09-03

This is Blessid Union's first album in a post 9/11 America. What we must be cognizant of when considering an album like this from a deeply personal and intelligent such as BUOS is that they are going to sound different; there is going to be a different feel altogether. Life in America has changed and musicians reflect this in their music. Listen to the lyrics of this album, the instrumentation and Elliot's magnificent vocalizations. You will not be disappointed, you will be moved.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2005-08-17

I have been a faithful fan of BUOS since their debut album, Home. I have seen the band play numerous times. Since their early days, the band has been through many changes, most recently with the parting of Eddie and C.P. This album has a "thrown together" feel. My theory? Lead singer Eliot Sloan's solo album didn't completely make it off the ground so the record company demanded that he and the band cough up an album. The lyrical quality of this album is not up to par with the three previous albums. They've also attempted to change gears musically with mediocre results. I also feel that the CD is suffering from Roth's absence. In addition to his instrumental contributions to the band, he also served as co-producer and provided string arrangements.
I hope that this album doesn't signal the commercial end of BUOS. While I prefer most of their songs that never see radio play, record companies love hit singles. This album failed to produce a "She Likes me for Me" or "I Believe."
Hopefully, Sloan will focus all of his inspiration back onto his band and the new musiciain lineup will begin to truly mesh. This band is entirely too talented to disappear off of the radio radar over one so-so album.

Regardless, I am still a fan, and all in all, this is still a better album than much of the over-produced rubbish on the shelves right now.

Everyone I know who likes FG got put on to them by word-of-mouth, so once you get "converted," don't forget where you heard it first... Anyone who cops their stuff is getting his money's worth -- automatically. This ain't no run-of-the-mill R&B. Matter of fact, I don't even think you could really call this R&B...just a hella mix of jazz, world music, soul, whatever.

I would refund your money if you went to see Fertile Ground live, and didn't like their show! Also, fa real: Keep your ears/eyes open for their connect, Olu Butterfly -- OFF THA DAMN CHAIN

Album Description

Two albums on one CD by Art and his quartet: Art was recorded in 1960 while Perception was done the following year. This release is the fullest and most complete evocation yet of Art Farmer as a soloist. Art had been thinking about and planning for this set for a year before he went into the studio. Over a long period of time, Art picked tunes he liked, including several that are rarely if ever performed in a Jazz context. Featuring Tommy Flanagan, Harold Mabern and Albert 'Tootie' Heath. Gambit. 2006.

Album Details

This Album, Moreover, is the Fullest and Most Complete Evocation Yet of Art Farmer as a Soloist. Art Had Been Thinking About and Planning for this Set for a Year Before He Went Into the Studio. "i Wanted", He Explains, "to Do a Very Intimate Session. I Wanted it to Sound as If I were Just Sitting and Talking to Someone with the Horn, Talking to Just One Person. The Feeling was to Be as If the Horn were in the Room, Right Next to the Listener." Over a Long Period of Time Art Picked Tunes He Liked, Including Several that Are Rarely If Ever Performed in a Jazz Context. "i Wanted it to Be Free Though", He Adds, "without Tight, Set Arrangements. It was When We Got Into the Studio that We Worked Out the Form for Each Tune." (From the Original Liner Notes).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reissue of the Year.......2007-03-20

I have enjoyed the Art Farmer record "ART" ever since it was first issued on an Argo LP back in the 60's. It simply is the best trumpet quartet record I have ever heard. Farmer's incredible lyricism has perhaps only been equaled by Chet Baker at his best. The "Perception" LP is also very fine, if not quite in the league of "Art". First rate remastering of these recordings from the famous Nola studios is a huge bonus--the LP was always noisy and poorly transfered to LP, at least in domestic versions. Add the wonderful cover painting of Art, and this reissue by Gambit is the highlight of the year. Snap this baby up while you can to enjoy the best Art Farmer on record.

5 out of 5 stars I PERCEIVE high quality ART.......2007-02-21

This is a real winner. Great mellow listening (but nothing like today's "smooth jazz"). Quartets with Farmer's melodic trumptet and talented, supportive rhythm sections. Interesting selection of songs--not the typical jazz standards you might expect on this type of recording. Audio quality is excellent. I believe this 2006 CD includes both previous albums (ART and PERCEPTION) in their entirety; apparently an older CD with these albums (reviewed in the Penguin Guide and described as "quite essential") left off one song from each album. I thank the previous reviewer, Mike DiMartino, for keying me in on this one.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE! Forget BOTH the costly Japanese CDs.......2006-09-28

I took a gamble on Gambit, on a high-hoped hunch they would follow the lead of time-proven fellow Spain label, Fresh Sound, by issuing these two albums without altering the original audio. My experiences with '50s-'60s jazz imports other than those from Japan has been an expensive hit-and-miss disappointment, as many are coming to us hideously disfigured by added digital "enhancements" and fake stereo reverb gimmicks (often studiply added even to recordings already wet with reverb). Of course, any butchering of the original sound just destroys the artists' and engineer's intended feeling, mood and color of a recording.

Well, if you demand original audio there's no need to spend $60 on the two separate Japanese CDs of ART and PERCEPTION, for Gambit is to be thunderously applauded for offering both albums on one low-priced, superb 73+ minute CD, a meticulously faithful documentation of engineer Tommy Nola's gorgeous '60 and '61 stereo Argo recordings of two of only a few sessions that featured Art Farmer in quartet setting. I have an original Argo mono LP of ART, and when I first listened to Gambit's ART--issued in its original stereo mix--oh, man, I was astounded at the clean clarity of the mix. And Art's horn just blossoms. (To those of you familiar with the RCA 44 BX ribbon mic, if you really want to hear the typically fat warmth that mic imparts on a trumpet, Art's Martin Committee trumpet, these sessions are a definative, exquisite example to study.)

Also the cover art and Hentoff/Feather liner repros of both LPs are beautiful, unlike the dark, dingy cover art repros--with added and very cluttersome graphics--now coming out of the EU.

At these prices, steal this one today.

Mike DiMartino in Rochester, NY. Thank you for reading.

    Album Description

It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

    1 out of 5 stars a huge letdown..........2005-12-21

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

1 out of 5 stars The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
    recycling Glass.

1 out of 5 stars Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

    3 out of 5 stars Sound Effects.......2005-09-24

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Funk Band !.......2007-03-12

This is a great compilation of Fatback from the earlier 70's prior to their Disco era when they hit paydirt with "bus stop" - - Here they're more of a down home Funk Band... Though not all the tunes are memorable classics, I do find myself listening to the compilation over and over again, getting hooked to this or that tune, then moving on, and coming back and finding another. (I owned most the albums at one time.)

As for the sound... Fatback is... Fatback. At times a bit "messy" (the horns may not necessarily hit the right notes and vocals can be forced) - - yet at the same time they're always tight, together... and the tunes are nicely put together. They can also groove and do some interesting stuff at more laid back and trippy tempos. Bass player is always kicking, drummer (the leader) definitely an under-rated legend (plenty of great breakbeat type stuff)... guitars are always strumming out some great funk,, nice horn lines, a little tambourine shaking, party like atmsphere and of course, there are vocals to boot... - - I guess in a way the sound is a bit similar to Early 70's Stax... Definitely not old school Memphis "Soul", but not the sizzling techno-funk of Tower of Power either... as I said... Fatback is Fatback... and thank God...

If you like Fatback, check out NEW BIRTH as well...!

F.U.C.T.'s Forever Ungratical Corinaric Technikilation is classic album of late 80's/early 90's era thrash. The sound is like a mixture of Animosity era C.O.C. with the heavy guitar of Black Sabbath or Melvins. Great songs with lyrics that dwell around the natural world and a faint spirituality. This is as good or better than anything from the thrash metal or metalcore genre of that era. Sadly, this Nashville band faded into oblivion as its label folded and they could never properly promote this great album. Get this, turn up your stereo real loud and when you hear the opening strains of "infectious world" you'll know what I'm talking about.
