An Awsome CD. Anything Lotti does is worth purchasing, both in CD form, DVD or VHS.

Back to where it begain!.......2004-08-09

In 1991 a 19 year old belgian(Helmut Lottigiers) entered the popular Dutch tv show "THE SOUNDMIX SHOW" wich was also very popular in Belgium. This very skinny young man inpersonated Elvis Presley,and it was amazing how such a young un-schoold voice came so close to the king. Not only did he won that show he was also singed to RCA records in Belgium the record company of Elvis. His first two albums were sung in Dutch and only released in the dutch spoken part of Belgium Flanders. His next two RCA albums would be recorded in English "Memories" from 1994 and "Just for you" from 1995 went platinum in his home country,but Helmut's manager the former Dutch rocker Peter Koelewijn sugested that he would do a concert with only classical songs,well they were not wrong,the concert was recorded and the album "Helmut lotti Goes Classic" was released in the fall of 1995 and reached the status of 6 times platinum in Belgium. The album was also released in Holland where it all begain and it would be the first gold and platinum awards from outside Belgium. Wit sold out tours through Belgium and Holland,Germany also discoverd Helmut and soon after that also Canada and the USA where intrested in this perfect english singing elvis sounding singer. Helmut is probaly the first Belgiian and Benelux megastar in years,and with his Tribute to the king cd,he goes back to how it starded 13 years ago. i also recomend the rca cd's "Just For you" and "Memories" wich are pop albums but still very nice to listen to!

I have seen Elvis live many times in Las Vegas and in person.
This is one of the best cds' I have heard yet, it is the best.
I couldn't tell the difference by the music,of course the face

I just played the entire CD : "My Tribute to the King," sung by Helmut Lotti, This is the best music I have heard in twenty years, This will wake a lot of Elvis fans, as well as music lovers everywhere. Mr. Lotti's Tribute is great. Thank you Helmut, (Here's an extra star)******

Superb Tribute to Elvis Presley.......2002-08-31

The fine Belgian tenor Helmut Lotti has just released his new CD titled "My Tribute to the King". For those American fans of Mr. Lotti who know him only through his series of classical concerts on PBS, this album may come as a surprise. It is a musical tribute to the great American singer and innovator Elvis Presley, a true giant in entertainment history. I suppose those fans of the "classical Lotti" really should not be surprised. Lotti has often expressed his admiration for and love of this American icon, even in his classical concerts.

I think the most impressive thing about this CD is the respect given to each song. Most singers doing Presley often do him in parody for comic effect. Elvis himself, in concert, often sang his "hits" as though they were jokes. But not Lotti! Helmut shows the utmost respect as he does his fine renditions: well arranged, well orchestrated, well sung. And while Lotti has an uncanny ability to sound very much like Elvis, he is not imitating "the King." Oh, no! These songs are performed by Helmut in such a manner that they become Helmut's own songs through his brilliant interpretations. Of course, great as they are, Helmut does not expect his recordings to become replacements for the originals. They are just what the aptly-titled album says: "A Tribute".

There are basically three types of songs included on this CD. 1) Hits made famous by Elvis, ("Suspicious Minds", "Love Me Tender", "Return to Sender", "One Night" etc.); 2) Songs that were hits by others, but became "Elvis songs" simply because Presley sang them so distinctively and so often in his concerts, ("I Just Can't Help Believin'", "What Now My Love", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" etc.); and 3) Two new songs written by Helmut Lotti himself and sung in Elvis's style, ("Thank You", "If You Were Mine"). (I think Elvis would have jumped at the chance to record Lotti's beautiful ballad "Thank You" if he had had the chance!)

Often the orchestrations are almost the same as on the Elvis recordings, but just as often they are fuller arrangements because of the large symphony orchestra that accompanies Helmut on many of these versions. Other songs are performed in stark, spare arrangements reflecting the originals intelligently.

Let me mention some of the specific titles: One of the most remarkable songs I think is "One Night". This is a deeply emotional blues. (It was originally entitled "One Night of Sin", a song about a young man's first agonizing visit to a prostitute: "One night of sin, that's what I'm paying for" hence the later line "I feel so ashamed"...) It was a number that Elvis did early in his career in the original version and in the "expurgated" version that became a hit and which is heard in Helmut's version here. It was rough, a truly primitive blues number that Elvis sang with amazing power. I never thought any other singer would get this one right. But Helmut does! Lotti manages to evoke the same sort of guttural, harsh-voiced blues that sends chills to the listener. Another amazing song is Helmut's version of "Crying in the Chapel." The softness of his voice, almost a transparent whisper, like a prayer, is so beautiful, so smooth. It's thrilling. Helmut's "Love Me Tender" is not done using Elvis's hit folk-song version of 1956. Yet Helmut still uses Elvis as a model because much of this version uses the full-orchestra arrangement that Elvis used when he sang it in his famous "Comeback Special" in 1968. It soars thrillingly. When Helmut does the legendary "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" it is truly remarkable. Replacing the humming harmonies of the Jordanaires quartet with a single, aching violin is a brilliant stroke. The song comes off as a clean, beautiful ballad. Helmut's narration here suggests that the great Belgian singer could easily become a fine actor, too! When Lotti does Elvis's concert version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" he drips the agony of dying love so effectively; even the quivering "N-N-N-NO" of the refrain is simply chilling.

This is a superb CD. I hope that those expecting classical music from Lotti will give it a chance. I also hope that Elvis fans will give a listen. They will find that Helmut Lotti is a great singer difficult to categorize because of the sheer breadth of his recorded library. This new CD expands that legacy even further. Do buy this CD. It is great and you will love it.

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Here's a few words of tribute to a multi-talented young performer. I've added this CD and video to my collection from Helmut Lotti's available works. These are so great as any of his materials have been and I'm so happy to have these in my large collection. In this project he displays a grand job of even sounding like his idol, Elvis Presley. I'm never disappointed with this artist's work.
