Great CD-a bit tongue in cheek!.......2004-12-31
Well produced, with BB sounding like he is enjoying himself. "Back Door Santa" similar to Johnny Winter's "Back Door Friend" in its meaning.
One of his best.......2003-11-24
This is my favorite Christmas CD, hands down. I'm a little biased, as I've been a BB King fan for years, but I was blown away by the production quality of this album. I expected something more along the lines of Andy Williams, but this is one hot blues CD. I would rate this right up there with Blues on the Bayou, which in my opinion is BB's all-time best (I prefer his later albums).
I don't know why they reissued this CD under the 20th Century Masters label, only two years after the first CD was released. It appears to be the same album, except that they apparently substituted Merry Christmas Baby for What a Wonderful World. But if you love the blues, then you will want this in your Christmas CD collection. My favorite tune turned out to be Merry Christmas Baby, where BB demonstrates that he's still got the pipes, and Lucille can still sing, too.

Great Christmas Music.......2007-01-11
This is one of my all time favorite Christmas Albums... I have the original 33 and it has been just realesed on CD and so I have that too. The CD sounds great, the music is great, Engelbert is great! Must own for anyone who likes Christmas music!
Finally!!.......2006-10-11
Ladies and gentlemen, this is an event! I wasn't aware of what album I had purchased, because it looks like a compilation, of which there are so many. Bu no, this is the rerelease of Engelbert's "Christmas Tyme" from 1977, for the first time available on CD!
The atmosphere is incredible, arrangements are classy, this is evereything you would expect from Engelbert at the prime of his career. I have already started my celebration for the holidays, and I promise you, listening to this album, you will, too.

Great Christmas Album..........2005-12-15
I love this album. Faith took a lot of OLD classics that most R&B artists won't touch and I think that is great. Her version of 'This Christmas' was done very well, but my favorite is 'The Day That Love Began'. I think it's such a pretty song and it's worth buying the album.
Christmas with little Stevie.......2005-05-11
First off, I'm not one to buy Christmas albums -- in fact, this is the first I've ever purchased -- but I am a big Stevie Wonder fan and have most of his post-1970 albums, even the not so essential ones from the 80's. The latter being true, there was almost no way I was going to be dissappointed with this, especially after hearing a track on the radio this past Christmas and really digging it.
This relatively new compilation (2004) includes 14 remastered tracks, originally recorded by Stevie back when he was "Little Stevie Wonder" and sung mostly non-originals under the direction of Motown executives. Tracks 1-12 were in fact originally issued as 'Someday at Christmas' in 1967 -- this new collection therefore trumps that album (which still shows up in the used bins) by adding two additional tracks. Still, the total playing time remains brief at 42 minutes.
The music itself is a bit dated of course -- Stevie croons in an adolescent voice, is backed by an un-funky orchestra with lush string arrangements and vocal choruses, and most of the tunes, if they ever were popular, are now obscurities. There are a some classic carols -- "Silver Bells," "The Little Drummer Boy," the classical piece "Ave Maria" (which Stevie braves in latin), and a Stevie favorite, Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts roasting on a open fire..."). Most of the tunes are slow ballads, until the end when the tempo picks up with "What Christmas Means to Me," a number more in the trademark Motown tradition with sleighbells serving as the rhthym section, and the two concluding add-on tracks. Some of the songs border on smarmy ("Bedtime for Toys" and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Me" with their spoken interludes), but the opening track "Someday at Christmas," "The Day That Love Began," "The Christmas Song" and "Christmastime" are standouts with Stevie really shining -- the latter two feature a bit of Stevie on harmonica.
I saw Stevie sing a free Christmas concert in Times Square back in the 90's, making me want to hear a modern Christmas album by grown-up Stevie and all his now trademark piano and vocal pyrotechnics, but this album works for me too... as something to put in around Christmastime to break the monotony of well-tread carols on the radio, a conversation piece (peace?), and a good addition to a relatively complete Stevie collection.
Christmas album for the ages!! .......2004-12-25
I can only say that I was blown away by this album when I first heard it. "The Day that Love Began" is, in my opinion, one of the best numbers Stevie has ever recorded: there's so much love and passion in this song!! "Ave Maria" is another example of how he loves to take risks and turn ordinary into extraordinary. How I wish he would have done "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen"!! If you're tired of listening to regurgitation of the standard elevator Christmas music on the radio, give this album a try.
Best Holiday CD in my collection!!.......2004-12-04
Stevie at his BEST! I love this cd!! So many great songs on one cd. Ave Maria is my favorite! He adds his harmonica to most of the songs which makes this cd a true classic!! My holidays require this CLASSIC music for Stevie Wonder! You will not regret having this in your holiday music collection! It is truly one of the BEST!

Should be a Holiday Requirement.......2007-06-26
What's better than hearing classic songs? Hearing them sung by The Jackson 5. Whenever I bring up J5 someone mentions their christmas songs so I had to get this and am glad for it.
Love The Jackson 5.......2007-01-19
Great purchase at a great price . Would gladly recommend to all. Perfect for the holidays but great year round as well.
The Robinson's Favorite Christmas "album"!!.......2005-12-28
This "album" is one of my family's fondest Christmas collections. When my late husband and I finished wrapping our gifts for our four children, it would be about 2-3 am . However, we made sure the Jackson 5 Christmas album was on the turntable. A couple of hours later, when we played the album, our kids would come running down the hallway to get to the living room and their gifts. Now that they are "grown" with children of their own AND in their own homes, it remains the "album" of choice when they start unwrapping gifts with their kids. Though we lhave so many Christmas CDs (Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway, and Light Jazz renditions) this is the Robinson family of Passaic, New Jersey's #1 favorite. The mix of carols, secular and child- oriented songs is fantastic. In fact, I have two (2) CDs to make sure if one happens to "walk" away or get damaged, I will always have one on hand.
the ultimate christmas album.......2005-07-08
this is the best christmas CD to be released by any artist. I cringe at christmas album attempts by ashanti and destiny's child, but jackson 5 did it greatly. The Little Drummer Boy song is my favourite from here and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus is a cute song, little michael sounds so adorable. The only other christmas albums in addition to this one worth getting are the Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross Christmas albums
One of the best for the holidays.......2004-12-17
Anyone looking for automatic Christmas cheer need look no further than this pleasant album of holiday favorites and Motown originals. I've even found myself listening to this on occasion at all times of year, just because it's really a solid record. The arrangements are beautiful on traditionals like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song," while the J5 add their own spunk to their well-known versions of "Santa Claus is Coming To Town," "Up on the Housetop," and "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." Every member of the group is allowed some vocal solos, more so than on their other early albums. Michael just rips apart "Someday at Christmas" and "Little Drummer Boy," it's just amazing what he could do at such a young age. Perhaps the best song on here was not on its original release; "Little Christmas Tree" appears as a bonus track on this edition, which was originally issued on "Motown Christmas" in 1973 as a Michael Jackson solo. It's got a great melody and catchy chorus, but is quite sad! All in all, this Christmas music is among the best I've heard and would definitely make the holidays sound terrific.

May Everyday Be Christmas!.......2007-02-15
People may wonder why I'm reviewing this Christmas CD in February. "Oh, wow, Matt's writing a review of a Christmas CD in February?" You bet I am! We're having our first real snowstorm today after an incredibly dry winter; and it made me think of the holiday season and Christmas. This CD brought back frond memories for me of listening to great Christmas music when I was young. The CD features Louis Armstrong and his contemporaries performing classic Christmas songs with a few pleasant surprises thrown in for good measure. Awesome!
The CD opens with Louis Armstrong performing "Christmas In New Orleans" with the big band sound of The Benny Carter Orchestra in the background. The musical arrangement relies on the horns and wonderful piano playing to enhance the beauty of this joyful number. Louis plays a splendid trumpet solo as well.
After THAT intro you'll scream for more; and that's exactly what you will receive! Louis performs the traditional melancholy ballad entitled "White Christmas;" Louis Armstrong croons delightfully on this number with the incomparable Gordon Jenkins and His Orchestra. Louis and The Benny Carter Orchestra join forces a second time to produce the big band flavored "Christmas Night In Harlem." Enchanting! SMILES
In addition to "White Christmas," other traditional Christmas songs on this album include "Silent Night" performed Dinah Washington with a backup choir; a live recording of Mel Torme performing "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire);" and a jazzy big band rendition of "Jingle Bells" by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra. I guarantee this will make you happy any time of the year!
A few special surprises pop out at you, too. Louis Armstrong and The Commanders deliver "Cool Yule" with panache, sophistication and joy in their hearts. The big band arrangement and the trumpet solo leave nothing to be desired--this is perfection! In addition, Eartha Kitt sings her famous number "Santa Baby" with Henri Rene and His Orchestra. Lena Horne also does a great job with "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." She even sings a few bars of an opening verse! Lena's voice is rich, warm and vibrant.
The CD ends with Louis Armstrong and Gordon Jenkins teaming up one more time for "Winter Wonderland." This peaceful yet joyful rendition provides a strong ending for this album.
I highly recommend this CD for Louis Armstrong fans as well as people who enjoy classic Christmas pop vocals. The big band sounds on some tracks enhance your listening pleasure. May you get this CD and enjoy it as much as I have!
Great Christmas Music!.......2006-12-24
Being from New Orleans, I would naturally be partial to this CD. However, I think anyone could enjoy the nostalgic sounds and jazzy tones of this Christmas selection. It is not easy to find in stores, so be grateful to Amazon for including it in their catalog.
Any time you can hear Louis Armstrong make music is a reason to be happy.......2005-12-11
Yes, this is a compilation album (a collection of tracks from different albums rather than one issued complete by the artist), but who cares. This is a collection of fine Christmas tunes by great artists from the era of the big bands, jazz, and swing. Besides, anytime you can hear Louis Armstrong make music is a time to be happy and that seems particularly appropriate to the Christmas season.
On this album, the tracks given to Mr. Armstrong are "Christmas in New Orleans", "White Christmas", "Christmas Night in Harlem", "Cool Yule" (particularly fun!), "'Zat You, Santa Claus" (yes, the tune covered by Buster Poindexter), and "Winter Wonderland.
You also get to hear a young Mel Torme in a live performance of his now standard "The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire). Particularly worthwhile.
And we get Christmas songs by Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, and Lena Horne. The other friends are tracks by Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington (a rousing big band instrumental of Jingle Bells), and Louis Jordan.
This is a great album to have filling your house over the Christmas Season.

Unnoticed but good.......2006-01-28
For some reason, this release never received major radio airplay or big display space in the stores. It was a very low key release for being the only Beatles full length Christmas CD. With Ringo, you know the Little Drummer Boy will be here and the set list is fairly traditional. It may not be the best holiday CD you'll ever hear but it is well done and enjoybale. It's a lot better than most of the CDs you;ll see in the stores with 50 copies on hand.
The best Christmas record the Beatles never made.......2005-12-19
This is a great record -- I am totally amazed that a musical artist would make such an effort for what is usually an easy novelty-sell. But Ringo and company have gone all out. It's a love-in for the era that Ringo came out of, and sounds strongly reminiscent of recordings made by a certain group Ringo used to be in... Together with co-producer Mark Hudson, Starr has re-created the studio sound and harmonies of the Beatles -- in a fun way. Ringo nay-sayers should also note that Ringo plays drums on all tracks, unlike some of his notorious recordings of the drunken years. He also wrote a whole slew of Christmas songs and they could easlily become standards in their own right. This album is nice -- and it also rocks. I think if people listen they might gain or re-gain a lot of respect for Ringo. And as far as the non-existent Beatles Christmas record goes -- the musicians here actually do cover an old Beatles Christmas song you never heard (they used to do one-offs for the fan club). You go, Ringo!
Definitely Ringo.......2005-12-12
If you are a big Ringo fan, then this album will delight you. If you are looking for quality Christmas music, this is not the album for you. I added it to my collection for its novelty value, but will not listen to it very often. "Come on Christmas, Christmas Come on," "Christmas Time is Here Again," and "Pax Um Biscum" have such simplistic lyrics that they are the type of songs suitable for Kindergartners. As for "White Christmas," after hearing this version you will understand why the Bing Crosby version is the number one selling recording of all time. If you want to hear a rocker sing "Blue Christmas," stick to the original by the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis. When I want to hear Ringo, I will stick to my Beatles collection. I enjoy those classic songs immensely, but as for Christmas music, Ringo just does not cut it.
FINALLY!!! A BREATH OF FRESH AIR INTO CHRISTMAS SONGS!.......2005-06-11
I don't really like Christmas songs at all. My wife always plays them during the holidays and I just have to suffer through it. However, one Christmas she had the cable tv on holiday songs and Ringo's Christmas songs started playing. It sounded so fresh compared to every Christmas song I've ever heard - I loved it! This album is awesome and I like listening to it year round. I love Ringo's smooth voice and I think Little Drummer Boy is perfect. Rudolph to me has elements of classic Beatles in it and I love the sound. It's like the Beatles have a new album out! Oh, one more thing...GET THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ringo is Santa!.......2004-03-18
Personally, I hope that Ringo never grows up. He adds so much life and happiness to a world full of problems.
This is truly a very charming album of Christmas favorites that feature Ringo doing rockabilly, crooning, rocking, and just having a grand old time. From the opening track on this CD, you can tell that Ringo is having a wonderful time recording this CD.
Ringo takes on old standards such as Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, and Winter Wonderland. These cuts remind me of the same happy Ringo who recorded the "No No Song" from Good Night Vienna.
But, the highligh of this CD has to be Ringo's "interpretation" of the Beatles "Christmas Time Is Here Again." This little novelty piece was released as a fan club recording in 1967. Well, Ringo makes it so much better with rich instrumentation -- to include bagpipes. I give the last track, Pax Um Biscum an honorable mention because Ringo employs the sitar on this song (shades of his mate, George Harrison). Listen to the opening tracks. . . . Shades of Instant Karma! What a tribute to another fallen band mate, John Lennon!
This is a great CD, and not just for the Christmas season. Ringo turned out a gem with this CD -- and, we definitely appreciate it. Ringo is Santa Claus!

Aaron Neville.......2007-02-03
I bought this as a gift and the person who received it, loves it. Great value.
OK, but.............2006-11-28
This "reissue and remastered" version is decent, but just does not measure up to the original.
He does these songs just right for his wonderful voice and the style of the song.......2005-12-13
Aaron Neville has a unique singing style that is based on his falsetto range and a specialized kind of vibrato that, to me, sounds like a beautiful alto flute. He still has a masculine sound, but it puts some people off. However there are so many of us who love his voice that we are also happy to have this great Christmas collection.
For a pop singer, his version of "O Holy Night" is fabulous and while he has the normal pop vocal cheats, the emotion and power of this version is quite straight. His version of Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" is about the best thing on the album.
He does a fine cover of "White Christmas" as are the other holiday fun songs "Let it Snow", "Such a Night". I like his "Please Come Home for Christmas" and the hymns "O Little Town of Bethlehem", and "Silent Night" are done with reverence and are quite moving. The "Louisiana Christmas Day" is a wonderful Cajun song. He finishes with "The Star Carol" and "The Bells of St. Mary's".
This is a great holiday album to have on sitting with someone you care about in front of a fire enjoying the season and each other.
Absolutely Wonderful!!.......2003-12-13
Aaron Neville has an angelic voice. He is unmatched by anyone else in the music industry. When you hear his music, you immediately know its him singing because once you hear him, you're hooked and you'll know that truly wonderful unmistakable voice after two seconds of hearing it.

I had not heard any of the tracks on this CD until before Christmas 2006. Once I heard "On this Night", I knew I had to have it. Never one to disappoint his listeners, "Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters" by Michael McDonald will be at the top of my favorite Christmas CDs for many years. Truly a man with a deep commitment to God, Michael melts hearts with this track and the others are just as good. He can rock and jazz your holiday with his smooth voice and writing skills in a way only Michael can do. You can't go wrong with this CD. Once I wear it out, I will definitely buy another!
I play this CD all year long.......!.......2006-11-24
The very 1st song grabs your heart, Michael and his daughter sing a duet that pierces anyones heart especially us dads...
He gets serious and sings about his "faith", his "walk with the Lord and really brings down the house in a number of classic Christmas songs, band, jazz and all!!!
This CD is worth every penny. Over the years I've seen Michael perform many-many times and it never gets old, just more refined.
Michaels Christmas Collection CD is a must have!!!Its gone Platinum..
God bless you Michael, Jim..........
The Spirit of the Season.......2005-12-03
This McDonald collection of holiday music was originally released as "In the Spirit" in 2001.
Christmas albums should fill you with the joy and spirit of the season and this one certainly does.
Although, I'm not much into categorization this music is easily classified as Christian Contemporary. This project is also filled with the sound of the Doobie's, but McDonald does manage to make many of the previously treasured Christmas classics his own. Some notable guest musicians on a few selections include Jonny Lang on lead guitar and James Ingram on vocals. Jazz artist Kirk Whalum also offers up a few outstanding sax solos.
On this project, McDonald has crafted a soulful blend of jazz, blues and gospel which sets the holiday mood and fills you with the Spirit of the Season.
Get It.......2005-08-08
This collection was originally released as "In he Spirit", there must have been some contractual problems so now it is being rereleased under a new title.
If you are a fan of Michael McDonald order it now. This music is so good you can listen to it all year round. This is my single favorite Christmas album.
Most of the songs are originals written by Michael and they are all great. The one golden oldie is "Winter Wonderland" and it is a great new fresh arrangement with a touch of Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis to it.
This CD makes me smile and sing along every time I listen to it. It is a MUST HAVE!!
Great New Holiday Music.......2004-12-21
I'm a little confused by the previous review: did you give it a one-star rating because you didn't like the music or did you give yourself a one-star rating for not paying enough attention to know YOU ALREADY HAD THIS CD?
It has the same title, the same songs, even the same photo of Michael on the cover. It's not exactly like somebody pulled a fast one here.
Anyway, this is a great CD for the holidays that blends some traditional tunes with new songs from Michael.
(There are even a couple of songs that get year-round airplay on the jazz station here in Phoenix!).

Not Burl Ives' Best.......2007-01-13
I purchased this CD thinking it was the same as a sound recording of Christmas music by Burl Ives released in LP form during the 1960's (remember LP's?). Ives is not in good voice in many of these songs, and in particular he seems to be rushing through "The Twelve Days of Christmas." In fairness, this is more of a 2.5 rating. If you want Burl Ives at his best, give this one a pass.
Burl Ives Christmas Collection.......2007-01-12
It's a great CD. Brings me back to when I was a little girl. We shouldn't forget the greats from the past. Besides, no one sings Rudolph better than Burl Ives.
Return to your 1960's Childhood.......2004-01-14
During the 1950's & 1960's, Burl Ives was remembered for his unique sounding American folk music. Today most remember him for his Christmas music from the TV special "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer". The most famous songs from that series plus a few from the 1950's are in this collection. The production does sound its age, the separation & highs are off, or to write it this way: it sounds thin compared to modern recordings. I collect many records from many periods & most are better upgraded than this CD. Most songs are done rather straight forward, with few instruments & back up singers, which may sound a little corny for some, yet revealing a time of innocence & fun. Try out the Listen to Samples & see if you remember any of the songs & then sing along with your family. The most remembered are: Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Silver Bells, & A Holly Jolly Christmas.
Please don't waste your money!.......2003-12-24
I have to start by saying that I love christmas music, especially all the "Golden Oldies" like Bing Crosby, Ray Coniff, Nat King Cole and Andy Williams. I bought this CD to add to my collection because I love the Rudolph the Reindeer movie and thought this CD would be cute. It is NOT cute, it is actually completely awful! He sounds raspy, the songs are completely off tune, and the whole CD is depressing. I have never been so disapointed in a Christmas CD, I gave it away to a charity store. It is not even worth $7.99. DON'T BUY THIS!!!!
Wonderful Christmas Collection.......2003-12-06
I bought this CD on a whim. The price was right and I'd been thinking about trying to get a copy of "A Holly Jolly Christmas." This was certainly the right choice.
Burl Ives contributes his distinctive vocals to many Christmas favorites. Compiled from several different Christmas recordings, they include such classics as "Silver Bells," "White Christmas," "What Child is this?" (with all the choruses, a bonus), "Winter Wonderland," and "O, Little Town of Bethlehem." Also included are a fun arrangement of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and a slightly different version of "Twelve Days of Christmas."
Of course, the collection wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of songs from the Rudolph special. Included here are "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Silver and Gold," and the previously mentioned "A Holly Jolly Christmas."
The recordings are simple; usually with one a few instruments and some background singers. This is different from the lush orchestra usually popular for Christmas recordings, but it's refreshing to have a different sound.
I'm not super familiar with Burl Ives' Christmas music, so I don't know what I might be missing by starting with this best of. All I do know is I don't regret the money I spent on this CD and will be enjoying it for many Christmases to come.

"THE" voice.......2007-01-10
I lost this CD in the process of moving and simply had to purchase it again. Christmas wouldn't be the same without the voice of this angel.
Dr Ponchita Lopez's Christmas List.......2006-12-17
On my list for Christmas is to own the Christmas CD Collection of Vanessa William. Her single "What Child is This" is her best! Her voice is in good true form. As well as her background jazz musicians. She is the best!
GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN.......2006-09-05
I'M LOOKING FOR THE VERSION OF GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN THAT WAS PLAYED ON THE RADIO IT WAS SAID TO BE ON HER STAR BRIGHT CD BUT THAT IS A DIFFERENT VERSION CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND THE RIGHT VERSION
Arrangements range from smooth jazz to soundtrack style - Good but a little too slick.......2005-11-11
Vanessa's distinctive sound is that it is well cultivated,
a beautiful tone, perfect articulation, like a polished pearl.
However sometimes these arrangements seem a little artificial,
sometimes obviously Kenny G, or George Benson, (I'll Be Home
for Christmas) or like it was pulled from the soundtrack of
The Lion King (Do You Hear What I Hear. Sometimes her vocal
phrasing sounds too much like she is borrowing from Al Jarreau,
while the band sounds like studio musicians who have used the
same riffs over and over on other album projects.
I do like her rendition of "What Child Is This", "The First
Noel", and her tastefully jazzy "Angels We Have Heard On
High". These arrangements are fresh and interesting all the
way through.
Overall this is still a pleasant album, though I would like
to have heard Vanessa challenge herself more, on range and
interpretation.
what a great album.......2005-01-22
Many of the top stars today all try to do a christmas album. The job is getting your album to stand out. After sampling all the famous artistes like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, I was most strucked by Vanessa Williams Star Bright. Her soulful rendition of Go Tell it to the Mountains entralled every one in my family! What a christmas it was! I also especially liked "Do you see what I see" and "Hark the Heralds". Star Bright is a masterpiece.
