Amazon.com essential recording

The scene: an abandoned theater, where a group of performers--alumni from the fictional musical revue The Weismann Follies--is holding a reunion shortly before the building is to be turned to rubble. The long-retired players relive their careers through Stephen Sondheim's brilliant pastiches of past songwriters, sometimes accompanied in song or dance by the ghosts of their previous selves. At the same time, four of the people (two married couples) are remembering their pasts and wondering whether they chose their spouses--and the course of their lives--correctly. The 1971 original cast of Follies included many former Broadway and Hollywood stars--Dorothy Collins, Gene Nelson, Alexis Smith, Mary McCarty--and the pedigree and sheer size of the cast kept the show from profitability despite a decent run (and also keep it from being frequently revived).

This recording of Stephen Sondheim's legendary show has become something of a legend itself. The score included 22 songs, but because the cost of recording a two-LP set was considered prohibitive, a number of songs were omitted and others were abridged. As a result, this too-brief 58 minutes can't be considered the final statement on Follies (for more music, try the uneven but sometimes electric 1985 concert recording or the 1998 New Jersey revival), but listen to Yvonne DeCarlo sing the anthem "I'm Still Here" or Collins sing the heartbreaking "Losing My Mind" and you'll know that the original cast had a special magic that has yet to be surpassed. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars For all Sondheim fans.......2007-03-29

Wonderful performances of Sondheim songs, especially from Dorothy Collins. There are other recordings with equally good performances, especially the one with Barbara Cook, and what one hears in listening to different recordings is how many valid ways there are of performing the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoying Folly of Follies .......2007-02-18

Being a lover of Sondheim's music, I have enjoyed "Follies" many times already, and expect to enjoy listening to this CD again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Follies: In memory of Yvonne DeCarlo.......2007-01-13

I didn't know there were so many other FOLLIES fanatics out there until I read all those reviews and I must say, I'm greatly surprised at the diverse number of opinions about who sang what best and which is the best recording! I was raised on the music of Broadway back in an age when the Great Broadway Composers were still active (The 1950's). Sadly, Steven Sondheim is the last of his breed, at least up until now. In those days, Broadway songs dominated the pop Charts as well and Dorothy Collins was a TV singing star on "Your Hit Parade". In 1971, although "Your Hit Parade" was gone and my eclectic tastes now included C&W and Motown, I still had a love for Broadway and truly great singers like Dorothy. This is why I bought the OC of "Follies" on vinyl. After a long lull, Dorothy was experiencing a career revival as Sally Rogers singing a show-stopper called "Losing My Mind" in FOLLIES. I wanted to hear this song. It wasn't available as a 45. When I bought the LP, I jumped right to this track. I Loved it. To date, "Losing my Mind" remains my favorite song and Dorothy's performance, perhaps eclipsed by that of Barbara Cook, is still a classic example of the torch song. Gradually, I began sampling the other tracks on the LP and I realized that I loved "I'm still Here","Buddy's Blues","Broadway Baby","Who's that Woman" and all the others. This LP expanded my tastes to include songs that did not necessarily fit the three minute beginning-middle-end formula of the Pop single like "Waiting for the girls upstairs", "The Road You didn't take" and "You're gonna love tomorrow/Love will see us through". Although the LP notes said that the songs were "abridged", having not seen the show, I didn't know what I was missing and thought I was familiar with the score. Yes, it's a shame that the entire score wasn't recorded and edited down because now it could of course be restored. It's been rumored that a bootleg tape of the entire show exists. I have never seen one but even if it did exist, can you imagine what the sound quality would be like? I mean, Cassettes? Still, This CD is real and has the original performances and if one looks at it only as a "sampler", it is still nonetheless excellent and belongs in the collection of every FOLLIES fanatic and Sondhiem Fan. There is always only one original performance and this CD captures at least part of that. For many years, this LP was Out of Print. When it was finally released on CD, Justine Johnson's performance of "One More Kiss" was added to the mix. Don't get your hopes up. This performance is from another album but it's an album that you should buy if you are a fan of this album. It's called "A Sondheim Celebration". The title is spelled out in scrabble tiles against a blue background. This was a benefit done on the West Coast in 1973 when FOLLIES had only just opened out there. This album contains the aforementioned "One More Kiss", Ethel Shutta performs the full-length version of "Broadway Baby", John McMartin and Dorothy Collins sing "Pleasant Little Kingdom" (cut from the show) with "Too Many Mornings", Larry Blyden, Chita Rivera and Donna Mckechnie sing "Buddy's Blues", Alexis Smith reprises "Too Many Mornings" and Dorothy reprises "Losing my Mind". You'll also find Nancy Walker's version of "I'm Still Here" (surprisingly, not nearly as good as Yvonne deCarlo). Dorothy Collins opens the evening with the best version of "Do I Hear a waltz" that I have ever heard (Yes, I know it's not from FOLLIES but Dorothy is! There are 20 other tracks on this CD that I won't discuss here but it really is a companion piece to the OST's of FOLLIES and COMPANY. By the way, Capitol contractee Al Martino recorded a version of "Losing My Mind" as a stereo single in 1971 or so. The tempo was slightly accelerated giving it a more contemporary (for 1971) sound. It was a juke-box favorite (remember those) in NYC. It's a great single and was included on Al's "Summer of '42" LP; However, the single is the one to have because the flip side is Al's version of "Too many mornings" which has never been included on any LP. I bought a pristine single from Germany via GEMM and burned it onto a CD. It's one of my all-time favorite records. I keep checking Al Martino's catalogue in the hope that one day one or both of these tracks will turn up on a CD compilation. Oh, and one more collector's item from this era... Look for a VHS called "That's Singing". It's a compilation of Broadway numbers hosted by Tom Bosley. It's a great tape which hasn't thus far made it to DVD. One of the performances is Alexis Smith in "Could I Leave You". Get one while you can! As I write this, Yvonee DeCarlo has just left us. A True Original! Rest in Peace, Yvonne. We'll always remember you.

4 out of 5 stars too bad they left out material.......2007-01-10

it is great we have the original Broadway cast on record. But Capitol skimped and never recorded all the songs which we got later, but not with the original cast.
A great score, one of Sondheim's very best

5 out of 5 stars Hats off, here it is, Sondheim's greatest achievement.......2006-12-24

Everything that needs to be said about this singular masterpiece has already been said. I missed the show when I was younger. I would give away probably every other performance I have ever seen on the Broadway stage to have seen this show.
Mr. Sondheim's score is rich, diversified, complex and staggering. It is a combination of popular theatre music, jazz, impressionism, vaudeville, torch song. You name it, it's there. Jonathan Tunick shows of his incomparable orchestration talents by creating such a beatifully woven fabric to display Mr. Sondheim's score. The casting was perfect -- no one on any of the other recordings matches any of the performances by the original cast.
It is a pity that we did not have Great Performances around to capture this one on film. Even though "Follies" is purely theatrical, I wish it had been preserved. It is also a greater pity that we were short-changed on the length of the recording and the amount of cutting that went into it. It is unfortunate that the producer was not able to at least record it completely, initially release this shorter recording, and then when all of the clamoring started for more of the show's music, he could have released a more complete recording of the original performances. How regrettable. Yet, what we have is priceless.
Hats off!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful songs.......2003-02-07

If you're a Sondheim ballad fan, this a must-have. While there are a few renditions that aren't great (Not a Day Goes By is way overdone), the selections from Follies sung by Barbara Cook are outstanding. The Cleo Laine version of "Send in the Clowns" is lovely and Stephen Collins does an amazing good job on "Sorry-Grateful" from Company. Still, it's the Follies songs that truly shine!

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming/Refreshing.......2007-04-09

The soft quality in his voice was relaxing and the music brought me back in time when things were a lot easier. I recommend this CD for those who like to sit, relax and enjoy good music.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasurable Stephen Collins.......2007-03-11

Stephen Collins, best known for his leading role in television's long-running 7th Heaven, warns in the liner notes that he's just singing songs that he enjoys and that "whatever the opposite of cutting edge is, that's what you're holding..." Perhaps, he's too humble with his evaluation of his vocal ability and this album. He simply does a nice, fun, easy to listen to job on 13 tracks ranging from a semi-biographical Looking For An Echo to the Everly Brothers' (Til) I Kissed You, Buddy Holly's True Love Ways, Rick Nelson's Fools Rush In, Don & Juan's What's Your Name?, and other familiar sounds. Collins does them well with a refreshing style.
This is a great album when you just need to sit down, relax, and listen to good music - music that brings back a few memories. It may not be cutting edge, but Stephen Collins should return to the studio more frequently.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to listen to.......2006-08-15

7th Heaven is my favorite show and I love Stephen Collins. When I saw his CD and all of the excellent reviews it got, I knew I had to have it. His song choices weren't bad, but his voice was. He was very off-pitch on many of the songs and it was literally painful to listen to. I was extremely disappointed with this CD. I think it will be one of my dust collectors in my CD collection. I wish I had better things to say about this CD, but it was pretty awful.

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd and great voice.......2006-08-08

I think this cd is awesome. I listen to it over and over again. i love Stephen Collins. He has an awesome voice

5 out of 5 stars Steven Collins .......2006-07-14

I have both albums and they play all the time. I don't think I've listen to any other music but these two cds.
I so enjoy the way Steven Collins sings and each song shows that he also enjoys the music.
I wish he would record more.

These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

If you are a fan of Rick Nelson and/or Stephen Collins you will like this CD. If you have, or have heard, Stephen Collins' 1st CD, this is definitely a must for you!

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Collins.......2007-03-29

I suppose if you're not a SC fan, a 5 star rating is extemporaneously extolled, however, I am a big fan and enjoy SC's melodic voice and enthusiasm for dedications to such performers as Rick Nelson and Elvis Presley. While they were Rick's songs, there was a detection of Mr. Collins, the performer, projecting a style of his own, which I found to be a very enjoyable listening pleasure. I especially enjoyed the information enclosed in the booklet regarding Rick's daughter Tracy and some history of each song recorded. Mr. Collins should do more of the same and while he's at it...........write another book. Bravo SC, I'll follow you anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Rick Would Be Proud.......2007-03-25

With the support of Rick Nelson's daughter, Tracy, Stephen Collins returned to the studio in 2005 after a two-year absence to record a selection of Rick Nelson hits. Rick Nelson songs are Rick Nelson songs, but here comes Stephen Collins and does a superb job. He excels on "Travelin' Man", "Poor Little Fool", and "Young Emotions." The often forgotten "String Along" is done nicely and causes the listener to really stop what they may be doing and listen to a version that has merit. Stephen Collins has taken treasured Rick Nelson property and handled it with respect and talent - talent which he is so humble about. Rick Nelson had a unique clarity in his voice and Collins has a similar crispness. Stephen Collins should be proud of this CD, doing all of the Rick Nelson hits well, and giving them a slight update. Rick Nelson would be proud.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Stars from 1 Bell.......2007-02-21

I LOVED this CD - actually I got 3 - 4 to 5 stars for all -
2 were of Stephen Collins - I LOVE his voice on these CD's -
mellow - relaxing - sexy -
the other was the song Taylor Hicks sang - after he won American Idol-
"Do I Make You Proud". I LOVED it when he sang it when he won - and
still love it.

3 out of 5 stars Grimes as song not drama.......2006-08-06

At first it seems inappropriate to title a review of Hickox's Grimes as "song not drama," because he is so expressly dramatic at many points in the opera. You can't find a storm interlude more ferocious -- almost terrifying -- and there are other meaningful gestures here and there. However, there are two things Hickox does consistently that work against the drama of the story and of Britten's writing: (1) he makes all musical gestures crystal clear, and (2) he gets his singers to sing almost all lines with smooth lyricism. Now, I am normally in favor of conductors that bring out the elements of compositions (I generally like what Hickox does with the War Requiem, though the sound isn't great, and I'm crazy over his DVD conducting of Turn of the Screw); and, as Hickox proves, much of Grimes is extremely lyrical, even gorgeous. But these two practices make much of the action sound extremely stilted, sometimes ludicrous. One could blame Britten himself for some of those moments, but then one could listen to Britten's own recording and hear them worked into a dynamic, realistic whole. (Admittedly, some of Ellen's music is just too precious.) Examples are too plentiful to mention, but I will note one of the more subtle cases: Grimes's "In dreams I've built myself..." Hickox and Langridge take pains to bring out the emotion of what he's singing -- by highlighting everything. For me at least, at no time am I drawn into Peter's state, perhaps because it's a dissertation not an experience. On top of the Hickox problems (and despite the lyricism he demands), the singing itself is inferior to Britten's recording, and probably to Davis's (it has been a while since I heard it); Watson's voice some across shallow, and Langridge is often reedy and unpleasant (and his lower register is not at all musical). Williams does make some nice points with Ned Keene, Opie does some nice acting as Balstrode, and Collins sounds good. All in all, I doubt I will get rid of this recording when I get another Grimes -- there is much that is rewarding to listen to. But I found it a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars A Shattering Performance.......2005-03-16

Peter Grimes is one of the most engaging operas written. It is riveting to see it staged and equally attention holding just to hear a performance. Peter Grimes is a highly dramatic story of someone slowly sinking into misfortune, shunned by the community and misunderstood. The drama of the opera is reflected in the splendid music that Benjamin Britten wrote defining the mood of his story. The many interludes that come between scenes have achieved their own fame in Britten's Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes. When heard in the context of the opera the show their true significance setting up the story that is unfolding.

This recording has been considered among the very best performances of Peter Grimes. Philip Langridge is superb as Grimes, conveying the frustration of an outcast and the menace of his character. This is especially true in Act 2 Scene 2 where Grimes imagines a kind of paradise with his new apprentice that disintegrates into a vision of Hell when he hears the villagers approaching his hut, and in the final scene he is excellent in expressing Grimes' collapse. Mr. Langridge is well supported by Janice Watson as Ellen Orford, Alan Opie as Captain Balstrode and Roderick Williams as Ned Keene, to name just a few. But it is Richard Hickox and the City of London Sinfonia who deserve the credit for creating a performance that is second to none. The playing by the orchestra is beautifully interwoven with the voices and the balance of the recording is outstanding. The London Symphony Chorus, who has a major role in the opera, are magnificent.

There are many great recordings of Peter Grimes, among them that of Benjamin Britten himself. It is a difficult decision to choose just one Peter Grimes but one can rest assured that the Hickox performance is certainly among the very best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT ENGLISH TENOR.......2006-07-22

Charles Craig was a superb British operatic tenor of the 1950s,60s and 70s with an authentic Italian style.
This recording is a brilliant tribute to a dedicated and fine artist. Any one who has not heard Charles Craig recordings before is in for a surprise. Forget todays modern tenors .This is the real thing.
The performance is indeed world class. His style is relaxed and unforced with some beautiful mezza voce singing and an excellent ringing vocal tone in all the right places. Buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Amazed!.......2006-07-10

It is both astounding and embarrassing to have to admit that after many, many years of loving opera, that I had never heard of Charles Craig. I assure you that the music samples that Amazon so thoughtfully provides does not begin to do his voice justice.

The recording brought tears to my eyes as he sang songs that I have loved for many years. His voice is relaxed and natural and his singing of the ballads section is just as enjoyable as his singing of the Puccini section. One is free to simply enjoy the music.

Another benefit of his singing is his ability to make the words understandable for the most part. I had a little difficulty understanding all of the words in his singing of "Because". His voice, however, was glorious.

I would definitly encourage anyone who enjoys a world class tenor to add this CD to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Great British Tenor.......2003-08-10

This is a fine example of a great tenor in the Italian school. These recordings were made in the early sixties just as he was about the embark on his Covent Garden and international. He probably sang Otello more than any tenor in the history of opera and unlike he with the Plastic Voice could sing all the notes of this opera.
