This volume of the chart-survey series is its best yet, offering stellar examples of nearly every subgenre it approaches. Interestingly, the platinum machine's eighth outing is also its most subtle (the take-your-time sultriness of Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat," Usher's "U Got It Bad") and teasingly offbeat (Gorillaz's dub-wise sleeper "Clint Eastwood," the Wiseguys' noise-hop "Start the Commotion") moments. Whether this indicates a trend toward the return of a higher-quality singles chart has yet to be determined, but save for a small handful of crummily derivative nontunes from Jessica Simpson, Fuel, and 3 Doors Down, the music here makes a good case for itself. Could a broadening definition of what's mainstream be fomenting? Caveats: 'N Sync's "Pop" is included in a remix that bleeds the record of some of its novelty, while Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" appears without the Ja Rule rap that helped lift it to bestseller status. --Rickey Wright

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

This volume of the chart-survey series is its best yet, offering stellar examples of nearly every subgenre it approaches. Interestingly, the platinum machine's eighth outing is also its most subtle (the take-your-time sultriness of Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat," Usher's "U Got It Bad") and teasingly offbeat (Gorillaz's dub-wise sleeper "Clint Eastwood," the Wiseguys' noise-hop "Start the Commotion") moments. Whether this indicates a trend toward the return of a higher-quality singles chart has yet to be determined, but save for a small handful of crummily derivative nontunes from Jessica Simpson, Fuel, and 3 Doors Down, the music here makes a good case for itself. Could a broadening definition of what's mainstream be fomenting? Caveats: 'N Sync's "Pop" is included in a remix that bleeds the record of some of its novelty, while Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" appears without the Ja Rule rap that helped lift it to bestseller status. --Rickey Wright

Overall, a definate great CD. I love various artist compliations. You get a little more variety than your average CD. Heres my opinion:
1. Destiny's Child, "Bootylicious": Good song, a little pointless...but catchy and easy to dance to. I don't really like the lyrics...kinda stupid. But it's good for what it is-- a dance song. I give it 3/5

2.*NSYNC, "Pop": Classic pop song. Not my favourite...but I understand why they included it. It WAS a pretty big hit for them. And I admit, it's a cute song. 4/5

3. Jennifer Lopez, "I'm Real": Doesn't quite live up to a few of her other hits. In my opinion, they should have used the Remix with Ja Rule. It was a bigger hit and a little catchier. But not a bad song overall. 2/5

4. Joe, "Stutter": Would be MUCH better with out the Mystikal Rap part. But its a nice R&B tune..you have to be in the right mood. Its one of those song that plays the chorus over..and over...and over..and over. Not bad though. I enjoy it from time to time. 4/5

5. Janet, "Someone To Call My Lover": Janet, as always has come through. Shes an amazing performer..and although this song was overplayed...it's great. Can't get enough of it. 5/5

6. Christina Millian, "Am To Pm": Theres was a lot of hype over this song. And its not a BAD song...but I'm not to into. I'm just not feeling it...it's not even that catchy. I think she needs a little more following. 2/5

7. Jessica Simpson, 'A Little Bit": One of my favourites. Didn't get nearly the airplay it deserved..but wonderful pop song. Catchy, good lyrics, nice beat, easy to dance to. Love it. 5/5

8. Mandy Moore, 'Crush": Love this one as well. I love Mandy, shes one of my favourite female vocalist (next to Nina Gordon of course). Not much to say about her....she's great. Good song for her vocal range..most people dont find it catchy, so they don't fully take in the whole effect. But very sweet song. 5/5

9.Aaliyah, "Rock The Boat": Good tribute to Aaliyah. But I dont like the song. It was a big hit. And its not a good song at all. It was good of them to put it on here though...I usually skip over it though. 1/5

10.Usher, "U Got It Bad": Wonderful. Definately the best ballad on this CD. It's a huge hit for him..and he works VERY well with ballads. I've never been a big fan of Usher. But you gotta love this song. Adorable lyrics and good beat. 5/5

11. Backstreet Boys "More Than That": Ehh... Its Backstreet Boys...they're okay. This is not one of their better songs. It's not very catchy...a little strained vocally. I personally think they work better with upbeat songs...but it's not a BAD song. It's good for what it is. 3/5

12. Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood": Am I the only person who doesnt get the title? Hmm..anyway..most people seem to think this song is "weird" but I like it. I admit, it took a little while to get used to..but it definatly grows on you. Love the harmonica. 4/5

13. Wiseguys/Greg Nice "Start The Commotion": Good dance song. Good background music as well. It' a cute song, a little slow lyrically, but great beat. 4/5

14.JiveJones "Me Myself and I" - I, personally, had never heard of this guy before. But GREAT song. Can't believe it didn't get more airplay. A little unpolished...but once you get used to it...you'll love it. 4/5

15. Smash Mouth "I'm A Believer"- Ugh. This is a Monkees song. Smash Mouth didn't deliver it quite as well..but it is catchy. I admit, it does make me smile though. 2/5

16. Sum 41 "Fat Lip": Love it. Upbeat. Great dance Song. Cant get enough of it. The best on the album. 5/5

17. blink-182 "The Rock Show": Overplayed. But it's definatly better than most of Blink's stuff. It's great until you get sick of it. 5/5

18. Fuel "Bad Day": A lot of people like this song. I hate it. It's annoying and depressing. 0/5

19. 3 Doors Down "Be Like That": One of the best lyrical songs on here. I love it...great for relaxation and inspiration. I could listen to it over and over. Great song. 5/5

20. U2 Walk On: This wansn't even a hit. But beautiful song and good ending. Doesn't quite live up to Joshua Tree though..and that threw me off. 4/5

4 out of 5 stars Vol. 8.......2006-07-18

Okay, here we have a near perfect 'Now!' CD, packed full of songs that everyone can enjoy, whether it's public knowledge or a complete guilty pleasure like N'Sync's 'Pop' is for me. Either way, this is a pretty good comp. album to boot. Diva's Destiny's Child open things with their campy single 'Bootylicious' which has become synonimous with Beyonce at this point in time, and the song itself, while holding no real merrit, is fun and enjoyable if not to sing along with at least to laugh at. Latina superwoman Jennifer Lopez gives is 'I'm Real', but not the version we're all used to, this is the cleaned up remix version that doesn't include Ja Rule and doesn't even sport the same lyrics and or beats...regardless I still love this song and think it was a smart choice on the part of the 'Now!' people to just place a song they didn't have to edit on the album instead of ticking us all off again with yet another botched song.

Joe and Mistikal both delive on 'Stutter' which was one of my favorite jams back in the day, as was 'Am to Pm' by miss Christina Milian, who never hit it big with this song and actually took another couple years to drop a full length album, shocker! Anyways, there's pop princess's Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson who both turn out decent songs here, Simpson in her pre-annoyance stage. It's funny how this girl FORGOT how to sing as her head got bigger.

The real gems here are in the form of The Gorillaz who give us the best song of the year with 'Clint Eastwood' which is all but brilliant in every way. I remember first hearing this song and thinking it was gold...you know 'money in the bank!' There's also Sum 41 who gave us one of the biggest songs of the summer with 'Fat Lip' and these guys keep churning out the hits, as does Fuel who delivers full force on 'Bad Day' and continue to rock hard and to satisfaction.

Backstreet Boys fizzle as does 3 Doors Down (mostly since 'Be Like That' was so over played, and still is so overplayed) while U2 soars with 'Walk On' which is beautiful and all together brilliant. Janet is annoying, never liked the song and never will, Usher is washed up and Smash Mouth is just plain over...they really need to just go away. Is it just me or does everything they put out sound the same. Never heard the Jive Jones song, but for some reason I can stomach it, as can I the Wiseguys 'Start the Commotion' even if it is a little forced.

All in all it's not perfect but yet another great effort on the part of 'Now!'

This is the only Now C.D. I've found so far that has had enough songs I like on it for me to buy it. The song I recommend most on this C.D. is track #12 (Clint Eastwood), which has an incredibly good lyrical flow and a simple yet perfect piano accompaniment in the background. There is also the energetic "Fat Lip" from Sum 41, which has many different types of music jammed in one (there is an almost rap-like jam in some sections, a jog-paced section, a soft part near the end, and of course the fast-paced main chorus). Aside from these songs, I would also recommend "Start the Commotion": a song that samples horn blares, bass guitars, 60's singers, an organ, and much more into an entertaining blend. "Me Myself & I" is also pretty good for its interesting noise accompaniments and bouncing melody, and Smash Mouth's rendition of "I'm a Believer" turns an enjoyable Oldie into a still enjoyable modern version with a catchy surf music beat.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard To H8 "NOW 8".......2005-01-29

"NOW 8" is a good album that isn't the most memorable in the popular series, yet for some reason the album bears a special meaning to me. Maybe it was becuase my life had gone through some changes and it was the 1st edition after the changes. That aside, the album contains many great singles including 2 of the 10 Best Songs of 2001 ('N Sync's "Pop" and Usher's "U Got It Bad"). And the album is very skimpy on hip-hop/rap, especially when compared to "NOW 7".
(1) Destiny's Child "Bootylicious" A-. This is a fiery, zesty, stormin' R&B dance track that anounces itself with fury. There is a true zip in it's club ready beat; one that never let's down. Has all the qualities that made "Survivor" so good, then takes it to the next level. Hard to belive that this song entered a word into Webster's Dictionary.
(2) *N Sync "Pop" A. Just a flashy as the group's previous dance tracks, yet it contains purpose and meaning. Justin's passionetly declarative lyrics set to BT's clubbed up beat make this song flow with terrific zip. Even the all insturmental part helps to make this one of the best pop songs ever recorded.
(3) Jennifer Lopez "I'm Real" A. Yes, this is the original version WITHOUT Ja Rule, but it's just as good as the remix. As a passionate pop song (verses the hip-hop remix) this heartfelt, creative and rather addictive. J. Lo doesn't try too hard a finds a wonderful more relaxed tone that works.
(4) Joe feat. Mystikal "Stutter" (Double Take Remix) B. A little old for "NOW 8" (Spring 2001), but that's OK. Content wise the song has a clever premise and intelligent lyrics that are not given full impact in their delivery. Joe's voice doesn't seem as strong in during some sections and Mystikal, with his irritating voice, is not a very good rapper.
(5) Janet Jackson "Someone To Call My Lover" A-. If nothing else this is a good old fashioned "American road song". It also happens to be catchy and easing with a slick production. This is the exact type of work that has made Janet a highly independent and invalueable female recording star.
(6) Christina Milian "AM to PM" A. Fact: Christina was NOT a new artist in 2004, but was new in 2001. That said, this is a highly entertaining dance track with alot of fire and zest. I have no idea why this track didn't find a large audince, it's almost in the same league as the massive "Lady Marmalade" remake.
(7) Jessica Simpson "A Little Bit" B-. A listenable pop tune, but then what? Seems a little too safe and standard (even for her) in the cutting edge world of pop music. I also can't listen to it without thinking about those damn Bally Total Fitness ads!
(8) Mandy Moore "Crush" A-. Mandy has had to struggle for suc cess against Spears and Aguilera, despite the fact that she often outstages them. Here she takes worn out material and re-vamps it through her heartfelt voice that seems honest. A small treasure that's miles different from "In My Pocket".
(9) Aaliyah "Rock The Boat" B+. Her tragic death made the inclusion of this inevitable, but that's OK because it is a very good song. Boasting a polished contemporary R&B vibe, the song gets under the skin with her lighthearted voice. It just gets a tad too long by the end, but it's not that noticable.
(10) Usher "U Got It Bad" A+. "Confessions" is his masterpiece album, but this is his greatest single. A classic piece of R&B with a modern untertone that gets to the heart. As the songb says; "if you're touched by the words in the song, then maybe u got it bad." Well, it's impossible not to be touched by this heartbreaking song.
(11) Backstreet Boys "More Than That" B+. A standard Backstreet Boys ballad that has it's undeniable charms. As always it sounds heartfelt in a classic way and wisely keeps a reasonable length as well. The 3rd verse especially gets under the skin.
(12) Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" A-. Finally, a clever balance between hip-hop and techno. At the bare minimum, the song is original and creative, and it also contains some catchy lyrics with an inventive tune (listen closely, and you'll see how the title fits in). Rap laced with techno? Maybe Jay-Z and P. Diddy are taking notes.
(13) Wiseguys feat. Greg Nice "Start The Commotion" B-. Not a hit on any charts, but a hit from a Honda commerecial (it still counts as a hit). The song doesn't wear out it's welcome do to it's very short length, and is filled with manic energy. But it doesn't really amount to anything too memorable.
(14) JIVEjones "Me, Myself & I" B-. A promotional hit for an artist who never really took off. It isn't a remake of the 1989 De La Soul classic, but a somewhat catchy and quirky old school rap. The song's bizzareness is not beneficial, as it detracts from the listenability.
(15) Smash Mouth "I'm A Believer" C. Smash Mouth a a pretty good pop/rock group, but even they don't deliver the goods with this remake. I'm sure exactly why, but it seems to be lacking the certain charm that made the original version such a huge hit.
(16) Sum 41 "Fat Lip" A. A catchy, coolhard rock track filled with rapid energy. It doesn't break any new ground material wise, but is blooming with style and excitment. A refreshing, higly entertaining rock song.
(17) blink-182 "The Rock Show" A-. Yet again, the boys from blink-182 deliver a catchy, party built hard rock song with a teenage undertone to it. It should be boing that they do the same style over and over, but they're so damn good at what they do.
(18) Fuel "Bad Day" B. The lyrics have real meaning conveyed through some powerful images, yet I think the song lacks the energy we come to expect from Fuel. It could have been a bit longer to expand upon it's subject matter.
(19) 3 Doors Down "Be Like That" C. Meaningful lyrics are given no life by the group's lifeless vocal style. It just grows redundant by the end and becomes boring. Wonder what the song would be like with more excitement.
(20) U2 "Walk On" C+. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is a great album with three great singles. This is not one of them. The song has meaning and a good purpose, but it gets SO dragged out that it looses everything it achived. There is something here, but it gets lost along the way.
Bottom Line: ***. A flawed album, yet the good singles outweigh the bad ones; thus I can recomend it. I would still like to see some more rap songs here; like Nelly's "#1", OutKast' "Ms. Jackson", Ludacris' "Southern Hospitality" and Crazy Town's "Butterfly". Not great, but a worthy entry in a great series.
NOTE: The album is respectfully dedicated to the late Aaliyah, who tragically died in a plane crash on August 25th, 2001.

The Now series has been around since the Spice Girls and is still going strong. On Now 8, many highlights from the summer of '01 are jammed onto one disc for your listening pleasure! Thank God for Now 8!

Bootylicious (10/10) - The hottest track on the CD. Destiny's Child is the best and will always be the best!

Pop (10/10) - One of NSYNC's hottest songs. This futuristic sounding track is one of the best cuts ever.

I'm Real (7/10) - The remix is way better but this one will do. J. Lo needs to stop lying to herself because she is not real. But this song is really good.

Stutter [Remix] f/ Mystikal (8/10) - The beat is sick but Mystikal's rap is totally whack and messed the flow of the song up.

Someone To Call My Lover (10/10) - Nice, slower Janet song. Just knowing that it's Janet makes the song a hit. Janet is one of the greatest performers and this song is one of her many hits.

AM to PM (10/10) - Christina Milian's hyped up club song. This song makes me want to dance all night long. I could put this on repeat all day.

A Little Bit (4/10) - Jessica Simpson has many good songs, but this isn't one of them. This song is terribly written and the beat isn't good enough to dance to. She gets a four because the chorus is so catchy and makes the song better than what it is.

Crush (0/10) - This song is really whack. Mandy Moore has better hits such as "In My Pocket" and "Candy". This song should have never been made. I always skip over this song.

Rock The Boat (10/10) - One of the best songs by the legendary Aaliyah. This song is so special to me because it has a nice beat, sexy lyrics, and it was also the last video Aaliyah ever shot before she was killed. This song will forever be close to me in my heart.

U Got It Bad (10/10) - The summer jam that everybody loved. Usher was barely trying to be noticed although now he is an international name. This song is really nice and sexy.

More Than That (2/10) - I don't like this song. That's all I have to say.

Clint Eastwood (8/10) - Although I'm not a big fan of rock/pop, this song is really good. This song was super famous.

Start The Commotion (3/10) - Boring and doesn't make any sense. I don't even remember hearing this song on the radio or even on TV.

Me, Myself & I (1/10) - Not to be confused with the Beyoncé hit song, this pop/rock song sucks and should have never been made.

I'm A Believer (3/10) - This song may have been good in Shrek, but without the movie it's boring and stupid.

Fat Lip (0/10) - Hate Sum 41. Hate This Song.

The Rock Show (0/10) - Urgh, will the torture ever stop?

Bad Day - Never really listen to it.

Be Like That - Never really listen to it.

Walk On - Never really listen to it.

2/3 of the album are worth listening to. The end are just boring rock songs so I would suggest you buy this album if the beginning 2/3 suit your musical taste.

    If you love Tudor court music, this is THE CD. I bought mine 13 years ago. A friend heard it and liked it, so I thought I'd see if it was still in print. It will make a sweet gift.

    Henry VIII, unfortunately, is often perceived as a bloated, irascible boor, with the table manners of starved dog. Overlooked is the athletic and refined young Henry, the idealistic romantic. These songs pay tribute to king as courtier, composer and musician, ranging from instrumentals to sighing expressions of courtly love. Of particular note are the Boleyn love letters, which curiously ended up in the Vatican. Unfortunately, none of the Queen's letters to her husband survive (the authenticity of the 'Tower' letter is in doubt).

    Rather than performing "Chapel Royal" music, this CD focusses on Henry's own works, which show surprising talent. He sang countertenor (odd for such an imposing figure), and played flute, viol, virginal, and lute; no wonder he found Anne Boleyn, herself an accomplished musician and composer, a perfect counterpart. Some selections are Henry's adaptations of contemporary works, but most are original: one can imagine the couple performing and laughing together on intimate evenings.

    The love letters are fascinating. As in the vocals, pronunciation approximates sixteenth century English. Notwithstanding the German accent, I still noticed some small flaws: the 'r's are not fully rolled on the tongue, nor are vowels consistently emphasized (early modern English was more phonetic than modern). I also noted unusual French pronunciations, although I suspect the differences were more obvious than is apparent here. Small quibble -- at least it's not modern!

    This is a fascinating CD, both in terms of listening pleasure and historical interest.

    This is a very good selection of the music of the Tudor king, Henry VIII. The Isaak Ensemble, a German group that specializes in music of the Renaissance, has done a fabulous job of bringing the music of King Henry VIII to light. Renaissance music has a sound that is all its own, much unlike Baroque or Classical music, and deserves to be heard. This CD also contains the love letters of Henry VIII to his wife, Anne Boleyn, spoken aloud in the original Renaissance English or French. The speaker has a heavy German accent that may or may not distract, but in the end it does not matter as the material matters more then the speaking style.
