If you're familiar with Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, then you know the sound of Lara Fabian's self-titled English-language debut: 56 minutes of bland, predictable love songs, heavy on ballads, with plenty of vocal gymnastics. Already a French-language superstar, Fabian alternates between vulnerable softie ("Adagio," "You Are My Heart") and tough cookie ("I Am Who I Am," "Part of Me")--failing to prove she's either, but belting her heart out nonetheless. Lara Fabian is a good gift for a 13-year-old girl discovering the pain of unrequited love: there's no sexual content, and there are plenty of fairy-tale platitudes to go around. --Courtney Kemp

Stunning - what music *should* be!.......2007-06-11
Well, 6 years later (7 after this CD debuted) and I see this is one of the best-reviewed CD's to date, and for good reason: this is what music should be. Passionate, soulful, emotional. Every song tells a story, and the music and words match so perfectly that every song is a story in which you can immerse yourself. No sitting there thinking "This is a weak track" - there are always some songs you'll like better than others, but the high level of artistic value is present in every song on this CD.
In my collection of about a thousand CD's, I have less than 10 that I would consider a "Must buy." This is one of those CD's.

Packed with Big Ideas about the future of mankind and dispatched with a distant, often icy veneer, Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence can scarcely camouflage its roots. It was begun by the late Stanley Kubrick in the mid-'80s; Spielberg collaborated briefly a decade later, bowed out, then inherited it upon Kubrick's death in '99. And while the late auteur's cold vision seems largely intact (if now infused with Spielberg's enduring Pinocchio fetish), it's safe to say that Kubrick's often challenging musical tastes would probably not have led him to composer John Williams's doorstep. Nonetheless, the acclaimed veteran again rises to the occasion, ably demonstrating that he's hardly been indifferent to 20-odd-years of minimalism and postmodernism and that, as always, the best film music is often a subtly crafted pastiche of sensibilities and styles. Setting the tone of the film's robotically enhanced not-so-distant future, "The Mecha World" crackles and glistens with Steve Reich's rhythmic urgency and John Adams's dense coloration, while "Abandoned in the Woods," "Hide and Seek," and "Rouge City" succeed by setting Williams's more traditional sense of melody against Phillip Glass's hypnotic arpeggios. There's also a sense that the composer has craftily evoked the ghost of Kubrick music past and 2001 in particular; "Replicas" and "Stored Memories" bring to mind Ligeti, while the mournful strings of "Cybertronics" seem a ghostly echo of Khachaturian's "Gayane Ballet Suite." David Foster's ballad "For Always" (in a solo rendition by Lara Fabian and a duet between Fabian and Josh Groban) seems twice-included strictly to enhance the album's radio allure. Completists should also note that Ministry's dark contribution to the film's Flesh Fair sequence, "What About Us?" is not included on this soundtrack, but is available on their Greatest Fits compilation. Arguably Williams's most musically adventurous score since his landmark Close Encounters, A.I. should take its place among the most distinctive of the composer's long and bounteous collaboration with Spielberg. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
The music is masterfully composed with wit, majesty, and soul.......2006-06-19
Beautiful .......2006-02-20
I would definately say this is one of his best. It reminds me of some of the other Spielberg collaboration scores. Mainly, Empire of the Sun, and War of the Worlds. Lots of the score is wonderful emotional underscoring. It's very complex, and full of interesting scales and keys. Of course, there is plenty of gorgeous thematic material to make the score complete. Honestly, I have never heard a bad John Williams score. Come to think of it, I've never heard one that was less than brilliant and amazing. Really, give this a listen.
Please vote me helpful!
John Williams does his best Minimalist Impersonation with Fine Results.......2006-02-05
Of course Williams, just like Steven Spielberg, can't help but pour on the schmaltz once in a while. The main theme of the film is the one used for the song " For Always ". When this music is played by piano and orchestra it's quite beautiful. When the soprano Barbara Bonney sings it with wordless vocals, it's very evocative of the mood in the film. HOWEVER, I have no idea what John Williams was thinking when he basically turns this beautiful, simple theme into a corny pop song. Oh wait, I know exactly what he was thinking, he was trying to generate a pop hit! Ugh. When Lara Fabian sings " For Always " on track 5, you grind your teeth and barely make it through. When on track 13, Lara Fabian is joined by Josh Groban for a duet version of the same song, it becomes intolerable schmaltz at it's worst.
So yes, there is much satisfying work here by everyone's most lovable film composer John Williams, just don't listen to tracks 5 and 13 so your musical sensibilities won't be irreparably damaged!
The last word from me, A.I., terrific soundtrack that rivals Williams' best, sayonara!
Will one day be considered among the best he's written.......2005-12-29
This score by John Williams will one day be considered among the best he's written. Highly underrated, yet greatly poignant.
I agree with other reviewers who have warned that this is not in the Star Wars / Indiana Jones vein. If you're looking for big, bombastic symphonic music, look elsewhere. This is very sentimental, but beautifully done music. It demonstrates John Williams' talent for matching the music to the film's intention. As his resume' demonstrates, John Williams can write music for just about every film, including a misunderstood "Spielberg/Kubrick" collaboration.
"The Reunion" (final track) is one of the best tracks of orchestra/piano music ever written. The lullaby-like song is the same melody as was used in "For Always," and it is achingly beautiful.
Appropriately, this final track is played in the film while David being (finally) reunited with his "mother."
Almost Impeccable.......2004-04-26
Several tracks stand out in this masterpiece. The twin versions of "For Always," one featuring Lara Fabian and the other featuring Josh Groban in a duet with Ms. Fabian are wonderfully pure. In solo form, Lara's voice is wonderfully smooth and has a subtle almost untrained quality that lends a genuineness to her singing. In the duet, Mr. Groban's silky smooth baritone perfectly offsets Lara's clear soprano. The penultimate song, titled "The Reunion" is a stunning, gorgeous lullaby of a piece that features a plaintive, almost childish piano theme. The simplicity is subtlely complex as the theme winds through an entire emotional range, from triumphant happiness to simple joy to black despair, and finally back into an almost heartbreaking lullaby.
Mr. Williams has displayed a wide variety of musical styles in this soundtrack. For fans of his that are desiring a "Star Wars" fanfare and overpowering orchestral pieces, this soundtrack is not for you. I personally prefer this collection to most of his other works.

A Wonderful Life CD by Lara Fabian.......2007-01-10
a waste of a true talent..........2006-09-19
You would never know it, however, from listening to this CD. This is a pop/rock album produced by Sony to appeal to young American fans. The up-tempo pop melodies, accompanied by synthesizers and drum machines drown out her voice and prevent Lara from expressing herself. The delicate beauty, honesty and intimacy that so typifies the other albums that Lara has recorded is missing here.
If you are used to listening to the likes of Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, Hillary Duff, and Britney Spears, then you will no doubt be impressed with this album, as it is certainly a cut above the music that most teenagers enjoy. If you are looking for something more than that, then don't waste your money on this CD.
Buy "Nue" or "9", and allow Lara to cast her spell on you, as she did on me.
THE REVIEW !.......2006-08-30
General Description :
Remember this Lara Fabian rule that works on everyone : the voice of Lara Fabian is so much convincing that you will always forget she writes lyrics and composes music ! Her vocal talent is THE key, but also her spirit. This album is pretty different musically from her english debut : it is more acoustic and closer to country-like music.
No big deal : A real good opening, the song is warm and it supports all the wisedome in its lyrics : "Think Im losing the fight, to make sens of it all". The singing gets more powerful as the song reaches its end.
I am : "Take these empty hands, this is all I am." The song is yet more pwerful than the first. The singing is very natural and true. Acoustic guitars are again the dominating instruments.
The last Goodbye : WOW ! I just love how the violon solo takes the first seconds to introduce acoustic guitar with keyboard synth. A very fresh song ! Very catchy and will leave something in ur mind. Dont be mad at it if it keeps on playin in your head all day.
I guessed I loved you (less than I should) : OMG ! A true gem. The 3.30 minutes song is devided in exact 2 parts. The first part is played on piano so soft with header lengend-like voice, so tenderly. She s telling her beloved "Im SORRY, and I want you back", more Im sorry. The starts the second part, orchestral and immensly unbeleivably powerful and stunning, with more "I WANT YOU BACK". I can tell you, if he heard her, he d be right back.
Conquered : Well it's time for some upbeat :) Very nice and lovely. The singing is so sweet and correct ! The song is so "light" abd cheers up.
Review my kisses : She s recorded that song for her debut album, much before Leann Rimes. But never made it to the final tracklisting. Now she's recording it again, more acoustic and easy. 5 minutes od full-time tenderness. Very acoustic and the spirit is there. Remember this song : it will be one of your favorites.
Unbreakable : Wise lyrics, taken from her hard experience with the french press (Who?) who were enough vulgar in critisizing her work (The kind who watch the best concert "but the skirt she wore was aweful, so her voice must be as well"). A little upbeat. "Take another look behind these eyes, it would take right around my heart. I feel, You should know, that Im not unbreakable".
Wonderful life : A sad song, in that phase where you are really sad but you're hoding on to your faith and hopeful. It's a remake. Very beatiful singing.
Intoxicated : She s written its music on her own, I dont beleive it. The first time i heard it, I got sothing from the song. But now I can tell you I wish this song would be half an hour long ! The Power of the voice of Miss Fabian ! Unbeleivable but true. How come she never loses her voice ? Well she simply sings right ! I'd say my favorite song... probably.
I've cried enough : The song starts with Storms effects. It's about faith. the songs ends at minute 3. Then there are 2 minutes with bass guitar and vocals rather than words. Very nice gift and version.
Silence : a 3-minutes song, upbeat. I muchly prefer teh french version. But it s very fresh and I must admit, it totally fits into the album.
Walk away : What a ballad ! It competes with all the best songs. The singing is perfect and sweet. Anyway, it s Walter Afanasief who's written it ! And the guy is good ! The song is so close to perfection. Sung with only an acoustic guitar, with one of the most brillant guitarists in the world "Jean-Felix Lalane".
Finally, from the spirit of this album I recommend the following three albums :
Verspertine - Bjork (experimental has never been so wise)
Lara Fabian - Lara Fabian (remember this name, her songs CANNOT be performed BUT by herself)
Boys for Pele - Tori Amos (Rage + coldes pianos give such a wonderful way to throw away ur inside fires)
Warning: Sony Copy Protected Disc.......2006-07-29
So, this disc has a logo on the front that says "SACEM SDRM". I don't _think_ that's the same copy protection that installed a root kit on computers earlier this year. But I'm not sure.
So my stance now is that no CD with that logo on it goes into my computer or stays in my collection. It's sad. I like this artist. But no CDs with this technology on it can be permitted to stay in my house, on the off chance that one of the kids will put it in a computer some day and forget to hold down the shift button. If that happens: Voila, the security of your computer is badly compromised, all in the name of keeping you from doing what you want with music you bought.
Don't let music publishers do that to you. Refuse to buy CDs that are copy protected. I just ordered this from Amazon, it just arrived, and it has this technology on it. I consider it intentionally defective goods. If I could give it zero stars, I would.
Keep in mind this is not a commentary on the quality of the music on this disc. I love Lara's voice and her music. But I'll have to pass on this disc.
This CD is more sophisticated, plenty of emotions!!.......2006-07-04

The Voice of My Soul.......2005-01-13
This album showcases 16 tracks, taken mostly from the 2001 French release 'Nue,' and features Lara with a simple, elegant combination of strings and piano; creating a perfect mood to stir emotion when adding her phenomenal voice.
Highlights for me on 'En Toute Intimité'are the cover of Charles Aznavour's 'Comme ils disent,' the loss in Fabian's 'Je T'Aime,' the hit duet with French vocalist Maurane 'Tu Es Mon Autre', and the impressively executed Italian aria 'Addio Del Passato' taken from Verdi's opera 'La Traviata.'
Also included on the live album is an English track 'Calling You,'--never-before-recorded, nor released til now.
In the beginning--Fabian was determined to become a recording artist after her success at the 1988 Eurovision song contest, and soon moved to French speaking Quebec. Born and raised in Belgium by a Flemish father and Italian mother--Lara learned and spoke several languages, studied dance, and was classically trained as a vocalist--though she considers herself more of a songwriter than as a vocalist. Lara Fabian is often considered a contemporary to Celine Dion. Unlike Celine however, Lara writes a majority of the music she records, which comes through in her interpretations. Thus Lara connects to her audiences' deepest cores with her voice, her uninhibited delivery, and most of all the intense performance that delivers her experiences, joys, sorrows, and more directly from Lara Fabian's mouth. She loses herself, and you will too if you listen with your soul.
If you enjoy Lara Fabian, especially her 2001 album, 'Nue,' I would most definately recommend 'En Toute Intimité.'
Lara Fabian sings with the voice of my soul, undoubtedly you will think the same after buying 'En Toute Intimité.'
Otherwise I will tell you, if you appreciate incredibly beautiful music you will add this cd to your collection as soon as you can.
*** LA VOIX FANTASTIQUE ***.......2004-06-23
HER SOUND IS A COMBINATION OF POWER AND VULNERABILITY WHICH HER MUSIC & LYRICS ALLOW HER TO CONVEY. I'M AMAZED AT HER VOCAL ACROBATICS WHICH FEW OTHERS HAVE THE ABILITY TO EVEN DARE ATTEMPT. SHE IS A MASTER OF HER CRAFT. GO ON LARA, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO BEST.
SHE IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE LIVE..........2004-06-19
If you love music which falls under a genre called simply beautiful music then you simply cannot fall in love with this subtley beautiful disc.Every number is sublime-Lara's delivery is wondrous-she has the voice that every diva can dream of, but unlike many other singers who shout for all its worth, Lara knows that subtlety can pay off big time; she never milks her vocals for all their worth and focuses more on trnascending emotion and meaning and feeling than showing off how many notes she can sing per minute-and believe me that she has every right to do that, with her range and prowess and whatnot.
This whole CD is in French, and I don't speak a word, but,(and this is a true testament to Lara's power as a singer) I feel every word coming from her mouth-I genuinely feel lifted by her,I repeat beautiful singing, and deeply felt deliverance. And if you like fast, brash and loud music which is the equivalent of the modern American blockbuster, well, you definately will not find it here.Every song is a slow ballad with nothing more than piano, and the occational swelling string accompanying it.And even if you're not like me, and you prefer more upbeat music, I believe that you will nonetheless be able to fall in love with En Toute Entime because the music is as stunning, melodicaly lyrical and richly emotive as they come. And if you associate the word ballad with Mariah and Whitney, think again, because Lara has a much quieter, much more subtle approach. Not a single number is overblown, or melodramatic-and the accompaniment is a wonderful melodic counterpart and helps reveal the music's beauty even more.If you're familiar with Charles Aznavour or French chanson, then that should give you a clue as to how the music sounds. And even though every song is a slow tempo one, don't be fooled.Every song is different from the last; there are quite a few remakes, and even an opera number which Lara pulls of with breathtaking ease.
I won't blab anymore. If you like good music, then get this album and drown in its simpleness, its beauty,it sweet sublimity and soulfulness; and Lara's awe-inspiring vocal talent/And(and I don't care if you've never heard of her in your life), if you have to sell your soul, you HAVE to see this woman live.I can't express how incredible that experience will be.Lara is so good-she serves as more proof that, just as with film nowadays, whilst some tripe gets played out, awarded, and talked about, the truly inspiring, breathtaking, and unforgettable talent that real artistic lovers are searching for are to be found far away from the mainstream world.

A Superb Talent.......2006-04-20
By the way... Lara is Belgian, and Celine Dion is Canadian! I much prefer Lara's voice-- she is not prone to the hyper-dramatics and screeching that Celine sometimes falls into when she sings in English.
I agree with all the reviewers here who state that Lara's French songs are far better than her English ones, and also that you do not need to speak French to appreciate the beauty of this album.
For anyone who appreciates a crystal clear, pure, powerful voice, I recommend this album. Lara Fabian is the ultimate example of how music can prompt powerful emotions.
Another excellent choice would be her album called "Nue." I am confident you will be pleased and moved!

Without a clue of what Miss Fabian is actually singing, I've bought this french CD album simply because I found myself totally captivated by her other song - 'Love By Grace'(from her first english album- released 2000). And, without any understanding, I've played '9' over and over again.....Why? Lara Fabian sings beautifully and the songs are work of art.
No french is required to'fall for'this album. Love is BLIND, right?

This film adaptation of the popular video game series attempts a technological breakthrough: computer-generated, photo-realistic renditions of human characters. But while critics and audiences gave mixed marks to game creator and film producer-director Hironobu Sakaguchi's ambitious technical efforts, it was ironically the film's most obviously human elements--its veteran actors' voice performances and, crucially, the masterful score by Elliot Goldenthal--that really brought it to life. Goldenthal's work is a sweeping orchestral masterpiece that covers vast musical territory, from the action-adventure of Korngold to the fantasy strains of Herrmann, florid Russian romanticism to touches of late-20th-century modernism. With the London Symphony in full voice and then some, Goldenthal's music is treated to a performance of rare dynamic range and dramatic power; the edgy, modern brass flourishes and thunderous percussion of "Toccata and Dreamscapes" alone may have listeners groping for their seatbelts. The album also features a pair of obligatory pop tracks, Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within" (which makes good use of Goldenthal's romantic themes) and L'Arc-en-Ciel's "Spirit Dreams Inside" (which doesn't). --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Details

Race to Old New York.......2007-04-01
-The best piece of music on the album and one of the best musical cues I've heard in my life is "Race to Old New York" which starts off with this fast moving strings that plays this simple melody, then shortly after the brass comes in and picks up the melody which keeps going to the short cue comes to it's natural resolution. I don't seem to remember hearing that cue in the movie which was a shame because it's so wonderful.
-Other tracks that should make glad that you have ears are "The Phantom Plains", "Dead Rain", "Code Red", "Music for Dialogues", "Winged Serpent", "Zeus Cannon", and "Adagio and Transfiguration". I love how he blends the techno stuff with the orchestral elements in "Dead Rain" and "Winged Serpent" is just creepy as hell. "Zeus Cannon" is a majestic piece that sounds like the music that should accompany a Greek god. "Music for Dialogues" is a great piece that should be familiar territory for all Goldenthal fans.
-There is an isolated track on the DVD which is great, but Goldenthal seems to have the same problem that great composer Marco Beltrami has, which is to talk over the music. Most of the cues he does talk over are on the album so it's not that big of a problem, although I do wish he would have actually talked for the scenes when there was no music. 10 minutes would pass by and we won't hear a peep from him, but he is a brilliant composer so I guess we can forgive his lack of great DVD commentaries.
-Even if you find the movie to be a little disappointing, the score should keep you interested. It's fresh, it's great and gives birth to "Race to Old New York" which should be included in any filmmusic geek's top 50 of great musical cues of all time
Masterpiece........2006-11-28
Fantastic!.......2006-02-09
Let me explain a few awesome tracks before giving the downside to this release.
The album opens with ambient noise and dark choir, much like Horner's Aliens. The second track, "Race to Old New York", doesn't appear on the film, or as this cue version does on the album. It's played by racing strings and low brass. Very good track and one of my favorites.
"The Kiss" proves to Hollywood and Goldenthal skeptics that he is able to pull of romantic, soothing themes. "The Kiss" is a romantic theme played by piano with some strings.
"Toccata and Dreamscapes" is the longest and most difficult track to perform. Goldenthal employs 40 French horns (!) to blast, grunt and shrill away every once in a while during the percussion and interrupted string action. One of the best tracks!
"Adagio and Transfiguration" closes the score album with a sad, sweeping reprise of the romantic theme and finishes on a solo trumpet.
Between all of these reviewed tracks are mixtures of sweeping cues, rolling strings, tense moments and dark choir. All this makes for a very diverse range of music on about 50 minutes of score for this release.
The album ends with two songs. Lara Fabian's rendition of the love theme in pop form is nice but is ruined by the last song on the album not worth mentioning. The rock song ruins the entire listening experience.
The Complaints:
One I've already mentioned: the stupid rock song at the end of the CD; two, the music is not in chronological order, but I guess it makes for a better listening experience; and three, much good music is missing! "Dead Rain" is almost 8 minutes long on the film and we only get about 2 minutes on the album cut. The good thing about the special edition DVD is that we get the option of an isolated track and commentary by Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal is smart leaving the music cues that didn't appear on the album uncommented.

"Where's my second disc?" (sarcasm).......2005-09-15
It more or less translates to this: The sections of score he talks over seem to all be here on the soundtrack and well covered. The several chunks of score he doesn't talk over some over eight minutes in length: completely axed and not used for this soundtrack.
"Dead Rain" is missing about seven minutes of great scoring which blend into it seemlessly in the film. Why do those responsible for cutting the score for a film's soundtrack axe some of the better parts (in my mind) in exchange for one or two tracks that don't seem to tell as much of a story? I've experienced this with so many scores I've bought. Exceptional pieces used in films getting axed.. and for what? The expense of a second disc? I'd gladly pay for a second disc or for a third folks. I really would, especially with scores like this.
Which is why I'm giving this soundtrack 3 stars. Not because the music sucks, it's great and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just remember to own the film on DVD as well as this soundtrack so you can get a little extra from Elliot.
Goldenthal at his peak performance.......2005-07-22
This film doubtlessly features one of Goldenthal's best film scores. It's rich and inspired in every scene and every take. It keeps your attention, down to the last minute on the album. The music for the dream sequences is the most complex and grand, with a complex combination of percussion, string arpeggios and brass - often culminating like a thunderstorm, but always leaving a calm resuscitation behind. Buy this if you like modern, complex, grand music and lush sweeping "dreamscape" music.
This one gets 4 stars.

This song is not typical for her. Usually she sings ballads but this is a soft dance floor song. HEr voice sounds great in it. The ballad reprise is not as good. They recorded the song new but I like the dance version a lot better.
The b-side "You are my heart" is a pretty ballad like many others on her albums. It'S taken from her first english self titled record.
