In a pop world where history is rarely acknowledged beyond whatever American Idol dishes out, Mandy Moore has discovered a stash of old records. The 19-year-old singer-actress who first appeared with 1999’s "So Real" has now decided to stretch her artistry with a dozen ’70s and ’80s touchstones. The results are mixed, but in the end Coverage is a success. Never over singing just because she can, but in proudly good voice, she brings worthy new shades to XTC’s "Senses Working Overtime," Todd Rundgren’s "Can We Still Be Friends" and Blondie’s "One Way or Another," while acknowledging the breakthroughs of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon . Whether she’ll continue to follow this path is unknown, but this CD is an achievement Moore can be proud of. --Heather Court

4 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-03-18

When mainstream artists choose to re-make older songs, the tracks that are re-done are often radio hits that exist in several forms already. With Mandy Moore's 2003 album, "Coverage", this practice took on a slightly different feel. While all the tracks on the record are covers (hence the title), they are relatively unknown to today's fans.

It's unusual for someone choosing to cover 70s and 80s songs to pick hits by artists like Todd Rundgren, Carly Simon, or Cat Stevens. This, however, is exactly what Moore has done. There are no Eagles or Fleetwood Mac to be found; not that those artists are bad, per se, but that their music is so often re-done that modern listeners are already familiar with it.

Not only are the songs different choices for a teen singer to cover, but the tracks are well-done. The original versions shine through, and while Mandy has put her hallmark vocals on the hits, they aren't changed around beyond recognition. For perhaps the first time since the 1960s, when re-making songs was common practice, tunes are displayed with respect to the original artist.

Normally, I stray away from covers. But this CD is simply full of good music. Listening to these tunes, I have a new appreciation for the lesser-known tracks by Elton John and Cat Stevens. And isn't that the whole idea behind listening to music?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Surprise!.......2007-02-15

While most people dismiss Mandy as a teeny bop pop star this CD will definately prove them wrong..This CD was sadly overlooked when released and ,yet,it is by far one of the best 'cover' albums I've heard..rather than just change the styles and add her own twists to the originals, Mandy makes the songs her own while staying true to the original and sings them from the heart and soul even though most of these songs were written and performed before Mandy was even born...She is spunky, fun, soulful, and does a beautiful job on every track...so much so that I listen to it constantly from beginning to end without skipping a single track because they're all excellant! Favorites(which are really hard to say since I like them all!) are "The Whole of the Moon","Can We Still Be Friends?","Drop The Pilot","Moonshadow","Breaking Us in Two",and "Help Me" but, like I said I love every cut! I'm actually old enough to remember when these songs first came out so if this CD can enchant an older guy like me it will be a great CD for older people who might have run from it and definately a must for those too young to have heard the originals and can now discover them...KUDOS to Ms.Moore for an awesome,up lifting, gorgeous CD that anyone can enjoy...she's a huge cut above the crop of 'new' teen girl singers like Britney and Jessica and she proves it with her "Coverage" CD...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars She is AWESOME!!!.......2006-11-19

She is already awesome, but this collection is by far her best. This CD shows her strong vocal ability and she covers the original songs very well. Not taking them to the extremes of where they sound fake or phony like other covers have been covered in the past by other artists. Out of all her music previously, she showed much more maturity for a CD that Sony refused to promote or have anything to do with. Mandy did her style of music, and did it well. Sony should be ashamed of themselves for not promoting such a wonderful CD to its fullest potential. Mandy Moore is very talented, and this CD shows just how talented she truly is.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2006-10-08

Mandy Moore sure is smart. It's evident in her 2003 album, "Coverage." Most people would think an album of covers would consist of material usually sung on American Idol(like the horrid Clay Aiken's A Thousand Different Ways), but Mandy Moore actually finds good old songs that aren't even completely suitable for radio. It's obvious that Moore didn't find songs for a singles album, but songs for an album that you can listen through the whole way without skipping a track. Usually the lead single is good and the rest is [...], but not with "Coverage." When I first purchased this album I had never heard most of these songs in my life, except for "One Way or Another" 'cause that was a major "duh." Even though her previous self-titled was good, Mandy Moore uses her vocals much better on this take. Instead of staying in her high pitched state she sings a little lower than usual and for the most part, you can totally tell that she had a blast recording this album and you can tell she's singing with a smile on her face on songs like "The Whole of the Moon." This album is so much better than the early albums of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and even Christina Aguilera's "Back to Basics" falls short of achieving the effect Mandy Moore does with "Coverage."

5 out of 5 stars Surprise! this IS GOOD.......2006-05-17

Let me start off by saying I am generally not a fan of these teen stars. Hanson's "Umm Bop" IS the worst song of all time.

I heard one of the songs on Internet radio and took a chance on this one. Wow, it is good stuff. The songs range from early 70's to early 80's. She doesn't stray too far from the originals but adds enough new flavor and current production for a catchy and enjoyable record. Great job.

I agree with below review of the best songs being the Carly Simon, Todd Rundgren, Carole King and Joe Jackson ones.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best groups of its kind.......2007-04-21

I got this CD after hearing there song Moonlight Shadow which I enjoyed a lot. I decided to take a risk and get the whole CD. I am glad that there CD is released in the U.S becuase I know trance is not big in the U.S and this is a great Album. I really liked Poison, 7 Years and 50 Days, Moonlight Shadow and The End (Special D Remix). All the other songs were good as well but the only reason I didn't give this CD a 5 star is because the CD is a bit repetitive. I would still recommend it to anyone who likes trance music.

4 out of 5 stars where is god is a girl????????????.......2005-07-26

WHAT????? why is "GOD IS A GIRL" not on here? that is their biggest hit, not to mention their best single. what were they thinking? for that alone, i cant give this release 5 stars. but, at least their songs are being released domestically. they are among the best in the genre. right up there with sylver, lasgo and milk inc.

5 out of 5 stars When covers attack..........2007-01-30

It's rare for a covers album to be something really special. Shawn Colvin's "Cover Girl" was probably the last one I've heard that I wanted to go back to again and again, partly because of the obscurity of her picks, and partly because of the mix of live & studio recordings. Mandy Moore's "Coverage" appeals to me at a different level, however. She's mentioned that a lot of the tracks she sang were picked for her, songs that she hadn't been previously exposed to, and she tackles them each with an exuberance that in some cases, even the original recordings don't match. "Whole Of The Moon" alone is worth the price of the album. For me, the defining trait of this record is that it offers up a better Mandy than her own previous ones. I'm very curious to see how this experience shapes her future work, since she's now back in the studio recording a new album.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Mandy Moore . . ........2007-01-09

. . . what can I say? I love just about anything that she does.

4 out of 5 stars Grows on you.......2006-12-04

The instrumentals sound as if they were made on a computer (and they were, on a Mac). It doesn't feel very polished, but the vocals are honest and accurately convey the meaning and intent of the original songs. After a few listens, it grows on you in a good way. The complementary DVD only has one music video (as well as a brief documentary), despite more videos having been produced for the album.

5 out of 5 stars Great and superb.......2006-12-03

Mandy Moore might not be as super-famous as her dancing blonde cohorts, but that isn't because she doesn't possess talent. On the contrary, the bottle brunette is probably (and this is arguable, of course) the most talented of the bunch. She doesn't swivel practically naked on stage like Spears, she doesn't oversing just because she can like Aguilera and she doesn't say stupid things like Simpson. On Coverage Moore displays matured singing abilities that both impress and sooth, as evident on "The Whole of the Moon," "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Drop the Pilot." Lead single "Have a Little Faith in Me" (which impressively--for a blatant cover--cracked the Top 20) certainly helped display to the pop music world that this girl has the staying power most of her peers lack; Coverage is a disc all ages can appreciate--heck, I didn't even know most of these songs were songs before this album came out! The electronic and DJ mixed sounds on opener "Senses Working Over Time" set the mood for the rest of the record, which contains songs from the 60s and 70s with a funky, cool new sound. This is an excellent CD (this version has a bonus DVD) which can only further Mandy Moore's now-impressive career.

5 out of 5 stars She is AWESOME!!!.......2006-11-19

Sony should be ashamed of themselves for not promoting such a wonderful CD to its fullest potential. Mandy Moore is very talented, and this CD shows just how talented she truly is. The DVD is an awesome added bonus where she talks about each song, shows off her recording studio, and other cool things. Mandy Moore is amazing and this CD tops her talent.

this album is great, it shows a growth in GC's music and a new derection.

    3 out of 5 stars what happened?.......2006-10-20

is this the same band that brought us "runaway", "god is a girl", "the end" and "poison"?????

i was torn about reviewing this album. It is a great album for the type of music that it is. BUT...it is a very mediocore album by Groove Coverage standards. For me, there are no standout tracks here besides the singles, "on the rado" and "holy virgin". on their first two albums there were even some excellent ballads. but the slow tempo songs on here are filler.

    I'm really dissapointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Explicitly Breathtaking.......2006-09-08

Groove Coverage The #1 selling Dance Act in Eurpoe and Asia (in the charts that matter) come back to swing the bat for the third timem, hitting a home run!

All though i thought Groove Coverage Was headed in the wrong Direction with their Sophmore album 7 Years & 50 Days with the exeption of a few songs such as Poison and 7 years and 50 days, they deffinitly took me by surprise with this one, coming back with the same intended rock twist, but with better lyrics and intensley mixed music (like the entrancing music from their debut Cover Girl), i have to say this one is better than the second album, maybe not as much as the debut but right up there!

    1. Summer Rain (love filled lyrics usual GC format nice melody)
    2. 21st Century Digital Gurl ( HOt track Diffintly a dance HIT!)
    3. Nveer ever Stop (not they're best ... not their worst)
    4. Holy Virgin ( the title explains itself ... Good song nice tune HOLLER!)
    5. Call Me ( Good song ! must hear... sweet lyrics.. great great production!)
    6. What u Get is What c... uhmm nice attempt at a popish tune more of a chillax kind of song though
    7. Angel from above (nice tune hot beat ...(club track)
    8. November Night (Sounds like another piano radio hit...like DHT's piano version of Listen to your heart)
9.When i Die ( another good song must hear .. pimp lyrics (love of course) great tune)
10 . On The Radio... (hmmm sounds like a bash! kind of over used Dj theme but its f- ing insane ... wierd 80's vibe to it)
11 Rock... hmmmm ( another failed attempt at aa genre conversion sorry groove coverage.. but rock isnt . your thing i like the twist but i wouldn't count on making a rock album any time soon)
    12. When love lives in heaven ( Awsome awsome awsome! sad love drowned lyrics! great pop beat ... if they lived in The Us This would be on the radio fer shorr!
13.Moonlight Shadow 2006... (what can i say ... they will always be good at this song .. maybe the first piano version was better but still this one rocks.. this is they're world smashh hit Three Different Versions (this being one) By Them Check 'em out!
14.i Guess Dj Novous Got on a sugar high or somthing with this one INDONESIA... is all right its just too Happy Hardcore
15.Let it be ... hmmmm (sounds like their old stuff only worse... its alrigh i guess.. lighten up on the synthesizer)

Every track on this is good...For hiphop I usually listen to Latyrx/Blacklicious, Erykah Badu, Common, very mellow stuff. But this is playing at my house constantly, especially when I'm getting ready to go out. Not too produced, so real, so well-written, totally fell in love with the entire album and play it all the time.

This long awaited album is a gem. The beats are tight and the cuts are very sharp. The writing and lyrical delivery are also much improved. With only a couple tracks that I would consider 'fillers' the content on this CD will keep your head nodding pretty much throughout. And with the over flooded 'bling bling' style heard much too often in today's rap, it's nice to hear a group stay original.
        Keep it coming Kreators.

Mandy Moore is the pop singer who managed to capture the fickle liking of the media, kept her clothes on, and put out the best covers CD in years, "Coverage." After a few CDs of forgettable (often downright bad) pop fluff), Mandy spreads her creative wings by presenting covers of some of her favorite songs.

Starting off with a bang is "Senses Working Overtime" (XTC), followed by (among others) the low-key swirling "Whole of the Moon" (Waterboys), the catchy "I Feel The Earth Move" (Carly Simon), slow, soaring "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" (Elton John), sweet folky "Moonshadow" (Cat Stevens), the imploring "Help Me" (Joni Mitchell), and a rocking cover of "One Way or Another" (Blondie).

While "Coverage" didn't get the media burble that Britney's "In The Zone" did, it garnered far better reviews from fans and critics alike. It's a creative gamble, and the passion behind it pays off. Moore's taste in older songs only adds to the pleasure gotten from listening to her sing them. Somehow it's comforting to hear that a singer has good taste in music herself.

Moore's vocals are fuller and richer than before, as if the better material has allowed her to stretch vocally. At times, the nuances of her voice change (such as "I Feel The Earth Move"), as if influenced by whoever sang it first -- she sounds rich and exuberant in "Whole of the Moon," then fragile and innocent in "Moonshadow." What's more, she sounds as if she really is relishing what she's doing.

Musically, this album is set apart from most of the mainstream pop out there -- it was recorded in a hodgepodge home studio, with organic instrumentation. The background music is also more multilayered, with a flute, saxophone, what sounds like a tambourine, and more. "Moonshadow" has almost nothing but a guitar serving to frame Moore's voice.

"Coverage" is a sign that Moore is aiming in the right direction. Sugarfluff pop it ain't, and thank God for musical growth. 70s and 80s pop and rock is given a twenty-first century spin in "Coverage," without Moore sacrificing the soul of each song. Definitely worth hearing.
