Are you kidding me with this?.......2007-03-24
"Mostly the credit must go to the enormously swinging back-up orchestra." That's because it is note for note, instrument for instrument exactly the same back as the original. Listen to Westlife's "Ain't that a kick in the head", then go listen to Dean Martin's original. There's no difference! I would not be surprised at all if they sang to the same records, just with Dino, Sammy or Frank's voice edited out. These guys are horrible and should stick to screwing over the pop scene and leave the standards alone.
Think I'm being mean? Check this review from the Stylus website:
"Opener "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" is the most destructive thing to have happened to Dean Martin since emphysema."
I really can't improve on that.
Folks, if you like this music, listen to the masters. Not the wannabees.

Lets be frankly honest.... .......2006-12-26
Surprisingly good, since I'm not a Westlife fan.......2006-08-27
Are the kids who like Westlife's original music suddenly going to turn into Sinatra fans? I dunno. Are Sinatra fans going to suddenly rush out and buy more Westlife after hearing this? I dunno. Will there be fans who don't even know these aren't brand new songs? Probably. But, you know, I enjoy over half of these songs. If Westlife does also, why shouldn't they sing them? And if this is how the songwriting lives on in the CD age, what the heck?
I'm glad I have this CD. Just for the record, I much prefer Bobby Darin to Frank Sinatra. (How many 42-year-old rednecks have such a firm opinion on this issue?) But hey, Westlife can sing. Prior to this CD, my impression of them was negative because what they sing about simply doesn't interest me, and which I presume they'll go back to now. This particular CD has some damn fine writing, which I tend to believe they'll never achieve again.
Classics to a NEW GENERATION........2006-08-27
Any artist can cover songs, but few can make them their own and provide the energy to make them sound new.
Aint that a kick in the head should be placed on any future greatest hits and the beautiful Smile never sounded better.
The boys had fun recording this CD and you will thoroughly fall in love, again, with these classic hits.
If you want a real treat, purchase their latest DVD - The #1's Tour, and experience a brief opportunity to go back in time.
Young people, if you take the time to listen, you will truely appreciate and LOVE this material.

It's missing that Westlife "goodness".......2006-10-17
Frankly awful........2005-10-31
Answer: something that sucks that COPIED something else that sucks.
"Allow Us To Be Frank" sees Westlife clearly having ran out of ideas. Well, not they that HAD any ideas in the first place - they're an empty-headed boyband, they say and do what they're told. But the managment team, obviously horrified that their cash cows last few singles didn't (gasp!) go to number one, hit on a previously golden idea - an album of Jazz standards, once upon a time sung by a variety of recording legends (but knowing that the braindead pondlife buying this will only have HEARD of Frank Sinatra, decided to name the record after him).
Like I said earlier, it's been done (badly) before. Robbie Williams released "Swing When You're Winning" (a take on his earlier proper album, "Sing When You're Winning" - gotta love those puns in the album titles, folks. A sure fire way of saying "ah, we were only messing around anyway" if the project fails), a dire album by all accounts, but for what Williams lacked in range and style, he made up for in originality and a genuine passion for the music he was singing and the stars he was mimicking.
So, "Swing.." sold by the bucketload. It was a massive success, which of course led to an album of Pop Idol drones singing the exact same songs on a, you guessed it, album of covers by famous Jazz singers.
Which takes us to this car crash of a record. What really gets me, and this goes for Robbie's attempt as well, is the knuckle-headed notion that because you SING songs that Frank Sinatra et al sang, you have to LOOK like them as well. So cue the slicked back hair, the suits, the smokey lounge, the smug expressions... WHY? Frank Sinatra looked like that, not because the genre demanded it, not because "that's what jazz singers look like" - but because, you know, he LOOKED like that in the first place. You want to sing jazz songs? Fine. Sing them. But why dress up? What is the point?
So, third time lucky for this gimmick, and thankfully the record buying sheep decided there was something else demanding their money this time around (some reality tv star had a single out, no doubt) and the record bombed. Hopefully this is the last time we'll see this idea wheeled out, because the sight of four guys singing songs they don't know, in a style they don't know, just because their record company tells them to, is not a pretty one. A repugnant, insulting record. Pay it no further heed.

Can "Frank" Be Too Frank?.......2004-12-31
With a catalogue stocked with amorous ballads (such as "I Wanna Grow Old with You," "I'll Be Loving You Forever," "Miss You Nights" among others), Westlife has gone full monty with an album of romantic excavates. Taking a tasty sojourn back to the sepia tones of the bygone pop standards era, these five Irish heartthrobs have decided to tackle Frank Sinatra's songbook. Though dabbling with the legendary Blue Eyes' repertoire is by no means novel, it's the first time a "boy band" has aspired for such lofty acme. However, with its legions of young fans who are vastly unfamiliar with Sinatra, Westlife is on safe turf in covering some of the more familiar (and sometimes over done) tunes.
Nevertheless, romantic moments abound as the recesses of the heart are deftly expounded on these paeans. Accompanied by a cadre of some quixotic sounding strings, "Fly Me to the Moon" has a chimerical feel. Singing the praises of his paramour's pulchritude, "The Way You Look Tonight" despite its numerous covers, is still one of Western civilizations' greatest love songs. Elegantly constructed and poetically worded. Love's gripping effects has never been more eloquent phrased than in "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," a track that's also been commonly associated with Tony Bennett. Tellingly, Westlife must have been listening too closely to Bennett's track as they veer perilously too close to the great crooner's rendition. Even when the tempo picks up on the single "Ain't Love A Kick in the Heart" or "That's Life" or "Mack the Knife," these lads sound like they are having fun.
However, I have a few quibbles with this entire project: First, Westlife has been known for their harmonies, though they did utilize some of them here, most of these covers sound more like solo efforts than a group endeavor. Second, hailed from Ireland, Westlife has on occasions brought in their Celtic touches, but these tracks sound so much like Frank Sinatra that it begs the question: can "Allow Us to Be Frank" be far too frank (pun intended)? Third, most of these tracks clock in at less than three minutes and they are at best straight forward renditions of these classics, but somehow I wish Westlife would have re-interpreted these songs giving them a more youthful and more contemporary feel. If it's just carbon copies of the originals, then isn't this project tautological?
If you like a collection of great romantic Sinatra classics, then this CD will suffice. However, if you want something a little more than professional karaoke, then there are better tribute albums to the Blue Eyes. "Allow Us to Be Frank" is a little too ambitious for these twenty somethings; I hope a door is kept open for a re-visitation maybe a few more years down the road.
NOTE: this pressing includes a bonus track "Moon River," which is given a straight forward read with Westlife struggling a little vocally. Otherwise, it's quite effable.
