Where Our Love Grows, the first album in two years from the '80s jazz/pop duo Swing Out Sister, proves that they can still produce catchy tunes of the quality that gave them their well-deserved success with singles such as "Break Out." The high production values, big brass sections, extravagant arrangements, and the exquisite voice of Corrine Drewery make for some great middle-of-the-road listening.
"Love Won't Let You Down" kicks the selection off with its upbeat rhythms and a blistering brass-driven melody that Bacharach could've written for Dusty Springfield. Drewery's vocal delivery is just as sassy and sophisticated as Springfield's, enhancing the retro feel to the track, a feel that is carried over throughout the whole of the record. The laid-back arrangement of "When the Laughter Is Over," with its swooning violins, slows the tempo down further, the subtle drum loop behind the orchestrated melody provides the song with a grove that so many ballads lack. The uplifting hook in the chorus of "Let the Stars Shine" really demonstrates the class of songwriting that Swing Out Sister are capable of. The harmonies smack of the Carpenters' fluffy, innocent pop, never seeming cheesy or outdated. The double bass of "Happy Ending" funks the track up, Drewery's Cleo Lane-like vocals take the listener to a smoky late-night jazz club.
Swing Out Sister are a retro band and always have been. But the pure quality of their output of the last two decades has meant that they have never sounded stale. Their craftsmanship and their musicianship have served them well, making them one of the biggest bands of the last 20 years, in Japan. Swing Out Sister will be around for a long time to come, if they remain consistent in doing what they do so well. --Jamie Clark

The Best Swing Out Sister.......2007-05-12
Swings so sweet.......2007-03-30
Imagine if Karen Carpenter, Sergio Mendes's Brazil 66 and Burt Bacharach all morphed into one---well this would be it. It swings, but not too fast---it's hip without trying and above all when you hear it, if you're a guy, it ill make you want to take home the prettiest girl in the bar or the sexiest one on the beach.
Sweet Escape.......2007-03-13
One of the best SOS CDs.......2006-10-08
however I can't believe no one mentioned about the quality of the recording.
The recording quality is very inconsistent. It varies from one song to another. Some of them are just very bad and dissapointing. And I feel it is unacceptable to be released.
I bought 2 CDs of this, since I thought I got a dud (or maybe pirated) but they are all the same.
Listen to the beginning of track 9 (We'll find a place), where you can hear that somebody just incrased the volume of some track and at the same time you can hear the hiss in the song.
Track 11 (La Source) which is my favorite song of the CD, you can easily hear the bottom frequency breaking up and distorted.
This is just shameful that a very good CD (with lots of good songs) is ruined with this bad recording.
I hope SOS re-release this album and fix the bad recording on some of the songs in the future. Then I will buy this again (my 3rd one).

I LOVE IT!!!.......2004-09-08
Swing Out Sister have done it again!!! The music on this cd is Rich and the melodies are fantastic!!! This cd envokes the best of 60's\70's Pop, Motown\early Philly soul, Dionne Warwick\Bacharach & David, Dusty Springfield, The Carpenters, The 5th Demension, there are sounds on the cd that reminds me of Chris Clark's Motown Lp.. I've played this so much i can't get enough of it!!! Great music and lyrics!! I'm very bias when it comes to their cd's because i think everyone of them are great! but WOLG may be their Best!!!

Good Stuff.......2005-11-06
Each song harkens back to some musical experiment undertaken in the past. For instance "La Source" is an instrumental revisitation of "Making the Right Move" while "Caipirinha" is a second take (17 years later) on "Coney Island Man". Other examples abound the rest of the release.
SOS have been difficult to track down since their last US release "Shapes and Patterns" which was a great effort....so I took a listen to this when I learned it had been released. I was pleasantly surprised.
Most SOS albums tend to get better with further listening, but I picked up on four immediate hits (songs I liked on the initial listen) for me:
Two instrumentals:
1. Caipirinha - awesome song, lots of vocalizing by Andy and Corinne...the harmonizing of the voices is quite nice. One of their best tracks to date.
2. La Source - infectiously catchy, yet mellow and understated, reminds me a lot of "Making the Right Move", which was a sublimely beautiful piece. Corinne's voice in combination with the saxophone is simply dreamy.
Two vocal tracks:
1. Happy Ending - catchiest vocal tune, and the lyrics are at least somewhat relevant to me.
2. Love Won't Let You Down - more catchy, excellently executed pop....
There are other good tunes as well, some will take some getting used to. This album is no masterpiece like Kaleidoscope World, but it's up there with the best of the rest.
70's style modern synth-pop = One Great CD!.......2004-12-12
Corrine Drewery and Andy Connell's 'Where our love grows' bring stability to their recent slew of juxtapositioned releases that never really found new appeal - nor much radio play. While Drewery's deep chanteuse voice carries like before, here melodies now have a genuine one-on-one character. Andy Connell's beats just amaze me. This guy is a genius behind the keyboards and synths. WOW!
I highly recommend 'Where our love grows'. Its appeal seems to already be growing. For example, 'Where our love grows' is now being played at all Best Buys! (Rather funny, since they don't stock this CD)
The only thing I disliked was the outrageou$ price for this CD. Since there are no US distributors, you will have to shell-out top-dollar for this Japanese-only release (see Universal International-Japan).
The Sisters are back!
Enjoy,
-Steve

No need to pay this price!.......2004-10-21
Just Average SOS.......2004-09-26
waited because I really wasn't impressed. "Somewhere Deep In
The Night" was so gorgeous. WOLG goes back to where they left
off with perhaps "Shapes And Patterns." "Love Won't Let You
Down" sounds like an outtake from that album. It's so hoeky.
Then there are the numerous instrumentals with the Carpenteresque/Brasil'66 chirping adlibs that are just throwaways. Is SOS running out of gas. Corrine's lyrics are
also really didn't grab me, but to be fair, if the music were
as stellular as it was on "Somewhere Deep In The Night" then
I wouldn't have really cared. I gave the album 3 stars because
eventhough, it's not really their best work, it still is a solid
collection of material and I'm sure people in general will like
it. One thing that I'm continuing to understand with music is
sometimes you must have certain personal experiences at the right time to really connect with certain music. I imagine WOLG
is that type of songfest. I definitely felt a high sense of emotinal connection with "Get In Touch With Yourself" immediately. That is still my favorite SOS platter. By the way,
isn't it time for this group to release some dance music again?
