A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

This CD has many original songs, some written by Donny himself. He is a gifted and talented musician in many ways. The album is fabulous. The songs have good messages, and Donny's voice is as strong and clear as ever!
I thoroughly enjoy listening to this over and over.

"What I Meant to Say" is an excellent set. The big news here is that Donny blooms as a songwriter. Yes, he does work with a number of co-writers, but the strong songcraft and performance create some classic tracks. My first impression on listening to the CD was "Donny Goes Boy Band." However, it grows as you listen more. I figure if there are three or four excellent tunes on a disc, it is an excellent purchase. This disc surpasses that standard. "Breeze On By" is the first of my favorite tracks with its addictive samba-like beat, Cory Baylis' great chugging guitar & Donny's high flying vocals, "No matter what happens I ain't giving it up; Every single day I'm falling deeper in love." "In It for Love" is another excellent track with its pop groove that starts out with some reserve before it breaks into a catchy chorus, "I want you to see that I can't wait another minute cause you know I'm in it for love." "Shoulda' Known Better" is another infectious upbeat track that Donny pumps out joyfully complete with a horn section giving a taste of swing, "How come I didn't see you were falling for me? The love was in your eyes; I didn't realize, For the rest of my life I'll regret it." "Insecurity" is another delightful track with its great pop groove, the percussion that percolates periodically & Donny's great soaring vocals, "If I told you what I feel for you baby, If I told you that you're driving me crazy..." The covers of Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and the Burt Bacharach classic "This Guy's In Love with You" are also excellent. "What I Meant to Say" is an excellent set. As Donny readies release of "Love Songs of the 70s," it's well worth to go back & review this fine disc. Enjoy!

My family enjoy this album almost every day. My wife's father came here from the Philippines and after hearing Donny's great sound took it to his room and listened to it until he left 5 months later.
I play "What I Meant to Say" to my wife when she is down and it always lifts her up.
One of the greatest thrills of my life was to see him dedicate "One Dream" to our beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinkley and then sing it in such a wonderful way.
Bless you Donny and continue using this wonderful talent that God has given you!!!!!

This CD is out of this world, wonderful. Donny has an incredible voice. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves good music. My husband who is a rock-n-roller just loves it, and although I prefer Country music, I loved it even more!

When I first heard this song on the radio I thought it had good lyrics and great music, but her voice left a lot to be desired. It sounds like she mumbled her way through the recording session. I immediately X'ed her off my "favorte singers" list.
I had these feelings toward her until her second single came out, "I Always Liked That Best". I don't know where the transformation came from! I could actually understand the words!!!
My advice to you is, if you like Cyndi Thompson, fork over the extra cash to buy the entire CD. Buying this single is a waste of your money.

The Georgia Peach Is Ripe And Off To A Great Start :).......2001-08-22

I first heard "What I Really Meant To Say" several months ago one rainy afternoon on the radio when the local Country station was playing singles that would be released in the near future. I remembered it well, because the singer's poignancy and deep sense of loss almost brought me to tears. A few months later, it started coming on the radio, as well as the CMT (Country Music Television) Channel, and it still made me feel deeply. So, I finally was able to find the CD-single in a local K-Mart and hearing "What I Really Meant To Say" still rocked my world as much as the first time. That song has quickly become one of my favorites and it really made me think what would happen if I lost someone or ended a relationship with someone that I truly loved, and I never got to say what I was really feeling. It taught me to appreciate what I have now in life, and to make sure I always give the people that are important to me in my life the truth, while they're still in my life... In addition, the CD-Single comes with another tune from her debut, "My World" album. This one is called "Things I Would Do", and it's a lively, toe-tapper that illustrates the situation of a girl contemplating what she lengths she would go through to have a certain man in her life. Still, I don't like it as much as "What I Really Meant To Say", but it's still a good song to get in your head if you're in the mood for something a little more upbeat. I love this single, and bonus!: It's an enhanced CD that includes photos, links, e-cards, and a music video and Cindy Thomson's home-video (though, you need to download 'Quicktime' to efficiently run the videos.) Wouldn't be at all surprised to see more of Cindy's awesome songs and great character becoming popular with Country Radion. I hope that the rest of the songs on her album are like the two from this single. Guess I'll find out, because I plan to buy it real soon :)

This gal has an incredably sexy voice and her title cut is exceptional. However, I found some of the tracks a bit too cute and strayed a bit too far from country. The CD grows on you as you listen to it.

Ok - so I'm a 39 year old man and I cannot explain my genuine appreciation of this former teen-idol's music. This CD is very strong, very mature. Donny's voice is so pleasant to listen to and his songs are accessible. Dang I sound like an old coot. But it's OK - I'm good enough, and I'm strong enough, and *doggone it** I like Donny Osmond. There - that's "What I Meant To Say". Just get the CD - you don't have to tell anyone.

This is a great CD. Been a Osmond fan since 1970. Proof that the Osmonds are a great talent. Donny is so sincere in this CD. The songs all touch your heart and make you warm and fuzzy all over. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Donny Osmond not only showed off his great vocals in his latest work but also proved to be an incredible talent in the songwriting area. There is not one track that is bad on this CD,
and when he sings the second to last track "One Dream" his voice and emotion are so expressive you can almost feel what the lyrics are saying. Donny has proven that true talent is timeless and that it only gets better. What I meant to say is definately worth listening too!!!!
