After losing my Father back in October, I began reaching for things that reminded me of him. One of the things I reached for was the score for the Road to Perdition. Although my Father was gravely ill the day I took him to see the film, it ended up being a day not soon forgotten. I am listening to the soundtrack as I write this review. Fathers and Sons.

Hauntingly Wonderful.......2006-12-18

This soundtrack is amazing. Like Shawshank Redemption, Newman's music colors the film, reveals character, and highlights themes. I've listened to this soundtrack dozens of times, and I still love it. From the mournful "Piano Duet" to the driving "Lexington Hotel", this is a great purchase regardless of whether or not you liked the movie.

Tells The Story.......2006-04-12

Wonderful soundtrack. If you've seen the movie, you can listen to these tracks and almost guess what or who they are written for in the script. I think Thomas Newman is the drummer of their composer family, because almost all of his music has the underlying ryhthms that make you tap to the beat (even though this is classically orchestrated music), with music that perfectly breathes the air of the times it was written for.

I own both the movie and the score, and I have to tell you, this film would not be half of what it is without this gorgeous, mellow, and sometimes violent and aggressive score. It really carries the film, and I think it even surpasses it some. Newman really outdid himself this time!

Disappointed in the content; wasn't fully sure what to expect but I would have liked more singing and less attempt at noxious comedy. Not really even funny come to think about it, noxious or otherwise. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't.

when i got this i knew who joe rogan was but didnt know how funny he could be and trust me you are going to laugh when you listen to his cd. hes vulgar which at times is funny but is over used at times too. the funniest tracks are the 1st one, the tigers f******, anna nicole smith, and #6. highly recommended if you are in need of a great laugh.

Not "just for men" ..........2006-06-15

I actually purchased this cd and his "Belly of the Beast" DVD a few years ago. But I just re-listened to all of it again because I needed a hearty laugh. This does the trick every time!

I wanted to add my two cents here because I don't think his humor can solely be enjoyed by men. I'm a woman and I think he's hilarious. Yeah, he's crass and vulgar--so what? That's exactly what makes him so good. He's real. I think the best comedians are those with the ability to turn their insides out and give us the rawest, most eye-opening picture of who they are and how they see the world. Done and done.

And even if you don't believe everything he believes, you'd be remiss not to realize that he's a clearly a smart cookie. He's not just throwing out BS on topics he knows nothing about. If nothing else, you've got to respect that. Not to mention his obvious talent in the delivery of his jokes--can't wait until I can see his act in person.

The bottomline is that if you don't laugh, maybe it's time to check for your pulse.

Fear is Not a Factor, but Funny is........2006-03-15

Most people know Joe ROgan from Fear Factor, and this CD is a very different Joe Rogan if that is the only thing you know about him. The humor is Raw and Uncensored but very funny all the same. This CD is a 45 minute "Dick Joke" but it's great! Joe Rogan puts forth a VERY solid effort on this CD and it was worth the purchase.

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Great Music CD !.......2007-06-17

Nazanin is a positive role model with a beautiful voice. I doubt that there are any Persian female artists today that sing entirely in english like Nazanin.

Her title song "Someday" comes from a passionate voice in memory of the women and children that have been tortured in the name of a pathetic and oppressive Islamic regime in Iran.

The entire CD exemplifies her versatility as a Pop singer, passionate, sincere and sexy.

Nazanin has gained fame for her wonderful voice. Her hit song, "Someday," is about the Iranian revolution of 1978, but the emotion can apply to any revolutionary song. Her voice is beautiful, the songs are well written, and there is no "dud" song among this great CD.

Many people have posted bits of Nazanin's bios in their reviews. One thing that I found greatly interesting was she is not a made up refuge. Her family was greatly impacted by Iran's "regressive revolution." According to a Nazanin biography:

"Born in Tehran during the turmoil of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Nazanin's family was forced to leave all their worldly possessions behind and flea to freedom, when her father had been jailed and tortured by the Revolutionary Guard under the new regime. Awaiting execution, it was the familys escape to Europe that saved them from political persecution. Faced with adversity so early in life, the revolution impacted her core."

If you wish to go to Nazanin's website, you can stream all of the songs and listen to them. If you aren't one for sampling music before you buy, take my word, you won't regret this purchase.

Nazanin is Wonder Woman.......2007-06-01

Nazanin, former Miss Canada, was born in Iran at the time of the Islamic Revolution. Her music is a unique blend of western and persian styles.
Aside from her music, Nazanin is a tireless activist for the oppressed in Iran and around the world. The music in itself is well worth the purchase, but knowing that you are supporting someone who is trying to make the world a better place is an additional incentive.

I agree with the previous review, so I won't say the same things here again. I discovered this artist, Nazanin Afshin-Jam ( Nazanin ) by accident-REALLY ( thanx to God above ). She is just simply the most beautiful woman in the world ( both inside & out )-and her music reminds me of Abba & Roxette-in that it is happy, simple & uplifting. I can NOT even imagine what it must be like to see her live. My favorite track is #10- " I Dance For You "-play this track & I dare you to be NOT happy. I hope the stuck up & robot-like DJs of the world finally wake-up-and promote this artist. She is exactly what the world needs-PLEASE BUY THIS RIGHT AWAY-IT WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU EVER DO!!!!

The Real Miss World.......2007-04-24

It's hard not to think such a thing about a woman like Nazanin Afshin-Jam. Beyond the Iranian-born Canadian's indisputably stunning beauty (a successful actress and international model, who was 2003 Miss World Canada, and 1st runner-up in the 2003 Miss World contest), is one truly very fascinating, intelligent and passionate woman.

Ms. Afshin-Jam is a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, achieving the top rank of Warrant Officer 1st Class. Fluent in three languages -- Farsi, English, French-- she also holds a degree in International Relations and Political Science from the University of British Columbia, and has studied at France's prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and England's Herstmonceux Castle.

Although Nazanin Afshin-Jam didn't win that Miss World contest, she has proven herself a woman dedicated to putting her education, intellect and talents to help those in need. Nazanin is the individual most responsible for the recent release of her namesake, Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi, from a death sentence in Iran. In 2005, Fatehi, 17 at the time, had been sentenced to hang for stabbing one of three men who tried to rape her and her 15 year-old niece. Nazanin started a worldwide campaign to free this girl. By traveling throughout North America and Europe, giving speeches, and holding discussions in the media, Nazanin brought this case to world attention, gathering more than 350,000 signatures to a petition to the Iranian authorities. Nazanin hopes to continue her work in stopping the executions of minors. This is one extraordinary lady.

Now to the CD...

SOMEDAY is truly an eclectic mix. Sung in English, French and Farsi the 12 genre-spanning tracks reflect Nazanin's global upbringing, ranging in mood and style from traditional Persian melodies and a variety of exotic grooves and beats, to dance pop and lush ballads. The title track (dedicated to aforementioned Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi), is an anthem demanding freedom and dignity for the people of Iran. While 10 of the 12 songs on SOMEDAY were written or co-written by Nazanin herself, the Farsi "Goleh Sang," written by famous Iranian pianist/songwriter Anoushirvan Rohani and Bijan Samandar is a wonderful piece highlighting the versatility of Nazanin's abilities. For me, however, the best of the songs on this CD has to be "I Do." This song is a gorgeous ballad by Nazanin singing as a newlywed woman who promises everlasting love and devotion to her sleeping husband as she watches over him in the moonlight.
A beautiful song, of the kind that one rarely hears anymore.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Hank Mobley produces some fine blues-inflected tenor solos, but when you hear guest John Coltrane (his last recording with Davis) on the alternate take of the title and on the modal "Teo," it's understandable why Davis was unhappy: Coltrane plays with a confidence and a bravado that no other saxophonist could have mustered at that time, and lifts the band from the first note on. And when Philly Joe Jones sits in on "Blues No. 2," playing with clarity and volatility, you know that Davis's working group was not quite up to his best. Still, Wynton Kelly is finely poised throughout; "Pfrancing" is one of Davis's most charming and durable works; and the muted trumpet on "Old Folks" and "I Thought About You" is vintage. Maybe not essential Davis, but very pleasurable nonetheless. --John F. Szwed

Davis and Mobley were great together.......2007-05-01

The underrated Hank Mobley spent so much of his life in the shadow of John Coltrane, who certainly blew more notes...

Mobley and Miles Davis should have been soul-mates, prior to '64, Davis often played solos close to the melodic line (see his solo on Round Midnight). John Coltrane thought so, he recommended Mobley to Davis as his replacement. Mobley has a wonderful lyric sound to his sax, despite the indifference of Miles Davis and much of the hardbop world to his work during his life. Thoughtful Mobley played complex music, occationally just behind the beat (like Billie Holiday).

In the song "Someday my Prince", Miles starts the solos and lays down the general tempo. Hank Mobley listens very carefully, comes in next, with a mirror image solo, similar structure, similar tempo, thoughtful lyrical, just like Davis. Then Coltrane comes in, much too hard and much too loud, with a solo completely unlike what anyone else in the group was playing...(Other reviewers have called Mobley "tentative" because he listened to what Davis was playing and didn't jump in, blowing as hard as he could. I disagree.)

For the rest of the album you hear the interplay of Mobley and Davis who fit together hand-in-glove, instead of fighting each other (in "Blackhawk - Live" - hear "Bye Bye Blackbird"). Coltrane was unhappy the MD group and soon to leave (it shows).

Davis and Mobley were great together. Mobley listened better than nearly anyone else, to Miles Davis and other trumpeters. Why they didn't play together more is a mystery to me. The only sense I can make of it is that Coltrane was a strong acid-contrast to Davis and Mobley was his mirror/shadow and Davis prefered contrast.

This (underrated) album is one of the ten best by Miles Davis.

I realize this is a Miles creation,but I would like to pay homage to some lets say 7 for now,of the great piano side men in the buisness.The great 'compers',with good ears and the instinct of anticipating an idea of the soloist before it happens: I'll throw 7 at ya- 'Winetone'(Wynton kelly),Sonny Clark,Bill Evans,Tommy Flannagan,Hank Jones,Kenny Kirkland,Stephen Scott. hell,8-9 we cant leave out Victor Feldman and Kenny Barron..
Herbie Hancock is a on a plateau of his own.In my estimate after Wynton, Hancock stands alone. I'm going adrift.Thanks for your patience. Wynton's solo on 'drag dog' is right 'in the pocket',and you can savour the classic Wynton signature on his solo on 'Someday my Prince Will Come'.Albums such as these are invincable,so full of creative ideas,that we all can return for many listenings and always find something new. This is the hallmark of high calibre composition and superlative execution of the improvised line, and in this case by the 18 carat gold quintet that's cutting the sides. Miles is in good company as Coltrane, Mobley, Wynton Kelly,Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb are on board to enjoy the ride.Great set.One to tuck away in the archives.Enjoy

Mediocrity of Hank Mobley.......2006-09-02

I always hold this album under my hand. It was late 60s that I have purchased it at a little record shop at the back of the famous town SHINJUKU in Tokyo. From then it is with me. But I have not long listened to it. So I have bought its CD together with "Four and More"(Amazon.co.jp). The latter sometimes listen I to on an audio cassette.
Although the guest John Coltrane plays wonderfully too in the album, but I like both Mobley and Coltrane. Mobley plays mundanely, but in the performance, a kind of mediocrity stand out conspicuously. It appears this mediocrity expresses his life. It grabs my ears and doesn't let go. Seldom meet I such a play. I hear Mobley saying as if human life be such a thing. (In that time Davis herhaps would try to find a new direction.)
The muted trumpet of Miles is natural and unconstrained. The lovely piano play of Wynton Kelly, with playing good accompaniment. The drums of Jimmy Cobb make the performance clear and rhythmic. As to the bass of Paul Chambers, I have now found it fits very much to the standard numbers of Miles Davis.

End of an Era.......2006-07-26

Though credited to the Miles Davis Sextet, 1961's SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME features only one sextet performance - its lengthy title track - with the rest of the album divided between two quintets, one featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane (on "Teo") and the other featuring Hank Mobley (on all other tracks). Both tenormen play well, whether in tandem or separately; and with Miles' post-KIND OF BLUE rhythm section in support this is a solid, if not exactly groundbreaking, effort from the trumpeter's rather overlooked "middle" period. The music is generally moody and careful, with the short "Drad Dog" (which would be resurrected as "Circle" on the 1966 MILES SMILES session) probably the most intriguing piece here. Though worth the time and money of any serious Davis fan, this album inevitably suffers a bit in comparison with the earth-shaking works which had preceded and would follow it.

The tuneful Miles Davis.......2005-08-16

Miles would record tunes that jazz artists never considered as suitable jazz material. What jazz artists ever recorded the following tunes prior to Miles?: Green Dolphin Street, Stella By Starlight, If I Were a Bell. He swung these overlooked tunes. This CD has two more examples: Someday My Prince Will Come and Old Folks. Someday My Price Will Come is from a Walt Disney film. Old Folks is from I don't know where. Good stuff.

Andre Rieu captures the romantic's heart once again in this, what is for the most part, a passionate album.

I feel the best tracks on this album are the russian-themed ones, like the title track (which I listen to on REPEAT when I am looking through my russian countryside or Romanov family album books). I feel that this and "Lara's Theme" (Maurice Jarre's love theme from the film DR. ZHIVAGO (a wonderful book and DVD)! conveys the passion for homeland which I strongly feel beats strongest in the hearts of all russians, more than than any other people). These compositions are so beautiful that it brings tears to the eyes if one surrenders oneself to them.

The late drummer Elvin Jones is best known for propelling John Coltrane, but the groove master was also a member of a legendary musical family. So it's only fitting that his brother, pianist Hank, was present for this 2002 date, the drummer's last session. And what a session it was! Along with the ebullient bassist Richard Davis, the siblings swing through several jazz and pop standards. The solid bass lines and pillow-soft piano, especially on the waltzy title track and the Latin-tinged "Caravan," make for a joyful noise, as does the stride-influenced solo-piano feature, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." But Elvin Jones's intricate cross-rhythms and shimmering cymbals provide the superb, syncopated colors, made by a magnificent artist whose brilliant beats and brushstrokes helped paint the canvas of modern jazz. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Solid.......2006-02-01

This recording is not musically exceptional and will not change your life. That said, it's a good solid recording by a trio that has been around the block. The Great Jazz Trio, in this incarnation featuring Hank Jones along with brother Elvin on drums plays with the sure hand of folks who have spent a lifetime making just this sort of music. I wouldn't recommend beginning your exploration of jazz music here, but if you have a foundation and like a good, solid trio playing teriffic old chestnuts you may well enjoy spending some time with these comfortable old (reliable) hands.

Legendary artists do not a great recording necessarily make.......2005-01-21

A real disapointment and this comes from a hugh fan of all three. Unfortunately, the real weak link here is Elvin, whose sense of meter was (frankly) rather waning in his last few years. The tone is set from the first tune, Caravan, where Elvin and Richard nearly derail on the bridge. In general, there are two different pockets from the drums and bass on the the entire recording that never entirely "sync" up. And while I realize that the material when played by musicians of this caliber is, to a certain extent , "besides the point", the producer(s) certainly don't show much imagination in song selection. Satin Doll?! C'mon man...Also, the tinny, tubby sound of the drums and lack of warmth of the trademark Elvin brushes sound is distracting. Flashes of brilliance remain but consistentcy is a problen on this particular date. There are hundreds of others recordings that these guys have built their formidable legacies on- It pains me to say that this is not one of them.

The 'great jazz trio' is composed of Hank and Elvin Jones and completed by Richard Davis. This was recorded 2 years ago. Elvin unfortunately passed away earlier this year ('04), and Hank is the last surviving brother. So it is with some bittersweet emotion that you listen to 'a child is born', a song written by their deceased brother Thad.

Even though it is a family tune, it is a standard by all measures, and so are the other songs. Classic bop tunes as moose the mooche, duke tunes like caravan, or satin doll, and lots of ballads. On one of the ballad, long ago and far away, Richard Davis plays the intro and outro with the bow. Richard Davis used to be a bit more avant-garde on his eric dolphy and andrew hill cds (he is on dolphy's 'out to lunch' and hill's 'point of departure' and 'black fire'). Hank Jones plays with the same light and delicate touch as always.

I cannot figure out why in the universe there's a baseball diamond on the cover art (it looks like this cd has a companion in 'autumn leaves' with the same cast, and another baseball picture on the cover). Other than that, this cd is great for someone who wants to hear a classical approach to jazz standards.

A Piece of Historic Inspiration.......2004-11-05

Haggard shines as he expands his songwriting territory .......2007-01-10

Out of all the recently remastered/reissued Merle Haggard twofers, Hag/Someday We'll Look Back is the least characteristically "Bakersfield"-sounding one. It's not really heavy on those wicked steel guitar licks or the go-for-broke background singers that I love so well, but guess what?? It's great anyway! On these two records, Merle really stretches out his songwriting, drawing more from blues, jazz and folk than ever before and crafting the most personal and emotional songs he'd ever done.

The first album, Hag, probably has more of a conservative bent than the second, with the heartfelt "Soldier's Last Letter," the plea "Jesus, Take A Hold," and the tender "Farmer's Daughter." Throughout the album, Hag uses subtle textures (listen to the piano on "Shelly's Winter Love") to convey his subtly powerful songs. "Sidewalks of Chicago is another highlight with its hard living tale. Other highlights are the honky-tonkin' "I'm A Good Loser," the homage-paying yodel in "I Ain't Got Nobody," and the humorous, true-to-life "I've Done it All." Any fan of Merle Haggard knows he really did do it all, working the cotton fields and doing time in jail before becoming one of country music's greatest songwriters.

The second album, Someday We'll Look Back, might be even better than Hag. Like Hag, Someday We'll Look Back reflects subtly on life's hard times (especially with the title track) but it also finds Merle wistfully telling tales from his childhood. "One Row at a Time," "California Cotton Fields" and "Tulare Dust" all reflect a rough but character-building agrarian childhood and a sentimental sympathy for Haggard's hard-working father. "Huntsville" is a great, brooding somewhat autobiographical prison song with some great lines--"the man better keep both eyes on me, or they're gonna lose ol' Hag." The album also has some of Haggard's trademark humorous and upbeat moments, like on the easy-going "The Only Trouble With Me" and on the rock-influenced "Worried, Unhappy, Lonesome and Sorry."

I heartily recommend this economically-priced twofer to people who are already fans of Hag--I think you'll really enjoy the songwriting risks and growth he accomplishes. I also recommend Merle to fans of classic rock and folk--modern country music's sorry state sometimes obscures the genre's rich history--there's a lot to enjoy here, even for rock and roll fans who usually think they're too cool for country.

I was very pleased with the CD and enjoyed hearing some of the old songs again. I bought it because I have a friend that needed the words to "Jesus Take Ahold" as he is thinking of putting it on his next CD. I might have to get another one since he now has it.

Listen And Let Merle Show You The Way To Bakersfield.......2006-10-12

I guess one of the things that makes country music so overwhelmingly appealing is the wide range of styles. Today country encompases everything from rockabilly, (Joe Diffie and Dwight Yoakham) to southern boogie, (Toby Keith and Charlie Daniels) to contemporary pop, (Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain). The question is how far astray can an artist go before the fans and critics begin to cry "Sell-Out". Well one artist that will never be accussed of 'selling-out" is Merle Haggard.

Merle has been recording for more than fourty years. He along with fellow Californian, Buck Owens helped to forge a new sound in country back in the early 1960's. It became known as the Bakersfield Sound and it defined what main stream country music would sound like right up until today. This two-fer offering comes from Merle's most productive period and contains some of his all-time best songwriting.

Merle Haggard embraces everything that folks have come to expect from an artist who never needed to change or compromise. He never saw any need to adapt his style to satisfy a fickled and trendy record-buying public. His songs are the expression of one who has lived a life born of struggle, hardships and more than a fair share of mistakes. But along the way he used these life experiences to shape a unique style and a distinct sound that can never be duplicated. I don't think Merle Haggard ever put out a bad record and here are two of his very best. Listen...Open up your ears and open your mind and let Merle show you the way to Bakersfield.

Classic Hag -- Two Great Albums at a Great Price.......2006-10-10

Hag was Merle's first album of original songs following the meteoric rise he experienced from the success of "Okie." Released in 1971, Hag found Merle straddling the new-found establishment success and anti-hippie sentiment of much of his audience with his naturally tolerant, introspective, egalitarian, and contrarian nature.

Given the rift in America at that time over race relations, poverty, civil rights, and the war in Vietnam, several songs on Hag seem to directly address these issues: the opener, a chilling cover of Ernie Tubbs' "Soldier's Last Letter," updates this classic against the backdrop of Vietnam. Given that we are again involved in a war with dubious meaning foisted upon us by leaders who have been less than candid, this song resonates as if it was written yesterday. "Sidewalks of Chicago" addresses homelessness and poverty, and "The Farmer's Daughter" is about tolerance and respect for others. The poignant "Jesus Take a Hold" asks for Jesus to intervene and help us, given that our leaders have failed us and the country is hopelessly divided.

But the best songs on Hag are the ones where Merle turns inward, and writes of uncertainty, lost love, and whether he can accomplish what his heart really wants. "Shelley's Last Love," a deft and moving love song, finds Merle hitting his stride as a songwriter. "I Can't Be Myself" and "I'm a Good Loser" continue in this vein, as does the heartfelt "I've Done It All." In sum, Hag finds Merle in top form as a singer, songwriter, and performer, it is easily one of his best records.

The follow up, Someday We'll Look Back, is a much looser, more relaxed affair. Filled with fine western swing and easy harmonies, this is Merle's backporch album, enjoyable from start to finish. The band rocks and rolls and Merle is clearly having a good time.

By the time you done listening to this great two-fer, you will, too.

maybe the best hag twofer.......2006-09-15

Merle really comes into his own on these records. His voice oozes assurance. "Hag" has many great tunes and most come from his own pen, my favorite probably being "Shelly's Winter Love" but they're all great. Even better is the flipside LP, "Someday We'll Look Back". This is one of the greatest C&W records of all time, subtly flowing together and deepening with every listen. It isn't built around any monster hits, but I listen to it all day long. A beautiful record. As far as the packaging goes, they don't list musicians or chart info, which is inexplicable, but the center photo of a thoughtful Merle chilling on an old log clutching his guitar makes up for it.

A loving tribute to a father from his son.......2005-03-25

It has always been Andrej Szpilman's dream to have his father's songs published in the western world. As the executive producer of this cd, he has fulfilled that dream. Some of his father's songs recorded for the cd were composed during his times in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Wendy Lands lovingly sings these songs with a beautiful heart-wrenching voice.

Hunt down the originals.......2005-01-20

happened to be living in Poland at the time of the release of Polanski's film 'The Pianist', and Polish Radio issued a commemorative boxed-set of archive recordings of Szpilman as pianist and composer. Unfortunately, this set does not seem to have been released outside Poland (though some of the piano tracks have been issued separately by Sony). One of the discs is devoted to some 25 of Szpilman's 'Piosenki' (chansons, popular songs) in archive recordings from the 50s, 60, and 70s of (predominantly) the composer's own arrangements - typically for sumptious dance orchestra or big band, and featuring some of Poland's most popular singers (unknown of course in 'The West').


Only when one hears these songs with their original Polish texts (whether one understands them or not), harmonised, arranged and sung in a style that bears the authenticity of their own time, can one appreciate the (no doubt well-intentioned) folly and inadequacy of this Wendy Lands collection. These new English texts are not translations, so the words have been artificially grafted onto a melody that has been crafted to set and convey text with quite another meaning. Of course the quality of Szpilman's material ensures that the new songs based on his melodies are perfectly respectable as atmospheric bluesy-jazzy numbers, but I can't help wishing that some executive had had the courage to release an album of the songs in their original language and colours... They are incomparably more atmospheric, haunting, charming, melancholy and elegant than the 'versions' presented on this new disc. Any lover of Edith Piaf or Jaques Brel, for example, would fall for them immediately - the inpenetrability of the language only adds to their charm, and is far more meaningful than the second-rate doggerel shoe-horned to the melodies here. I hope these Polish recordings will become generally available soon - if not, you'll have to make friends with a Pole, get a cheap flight to Warsaw, or petition Polish Radio! It really is worth it - the old recordings are charming and heartbreaking.

Huge Disappointment.......2004-02-27

After enjoying the autobiography and the movie, my family's expectations for this recording of Szpilman's songs were extremely high. From all angles, these hopes were crushed. The songs were probably - after their composition - given their first performance in a nightclub and that later exposure over Polish radio would hve retained the European night club feeling. The arrangements were far off the mark , both in their choice of instrumentation and in their composition. As for Miss Land, her voice is better described as "dreary" and "monotonous" rather than 'dark" and "smoky" as some have described it. To put it blunt.ly, she has no "voice" only breathy sighs.

I suggest that Andrzej Szpilman, Wladyslav' son, have another go at this project. During my Foreign Service career I have spent many months in Warsaw 1960-1962 and many hours at the Congresova and other night clubs. It shouldn't be too hard to persuade some Polish musicians to cooperate in a project to re-create Wladyslav's songs imbued with their original charm and spirit.

Finally, I wonder if the English lyrics followed the original Polish or were completely different.

What a beautiful voice, what sensitive, expressive delivery. I bought this album on a whim and I am blown away by the whole ensenble of fine musicians - but especially by Wendy Lands. The recording quality is clean and crisp, the songs evocative, intelligent, and melodic.
The last album that similarly impressed me was Norah Jones.
Then to realize that these melodies were written by Wladislaw Szpilman (the subject of Roman Polaski's "The Pianist") just adds to the wonderment of this beautiful album.
Please, more Wendy Lands! Bravo!!!

I was suprised to learn that Wladyslaw Szpilman wrote contemporary songs. I was aware that he wrote compositions, but it never entered my mind that he wrote such beautiful songs that are on this CD. After seeing "The Pianist" and reading Spzilman's book and then seeing the DVD with an added documentary on the making of "The Pianist", my curiosity was piqued. Andrej Spzilman, the son of Wladyslaw, long dreamt of introducing his father's songs to the west and he chose Wendy Lands to sing these hauntingly beautiful songs. Upon purchasing this CD, I was hesitant that I might find them too much in the vein of 'Easy Listening'. I am glad to say that was not the case. I played it three times and should Wendy Lands continue to sing the songs of Wladyslaw Spzilman, I would be grateful. This is a very beautiful album and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Wladyslaw Spzilman did not merely survive the most grim conditions of The Holocaust, he thrived through his love of music and this album is proof of what a genius he was. I look forward to a second CD of his songs sung by Ms. Lands. Her heartrending interpretations draw the listener in. This is a truly sublime album!
