This revamped version of the Carpenters' two original Singles LPs may, despite the absence of some Top 40 charters, stand as the definitive single-CD collection of the duo's hits. Included are most of the reasons Karen Carpenter's bring-the-pain vocals are still revered by thrift-shopping college kids and their moms alike. Despite the act's squeaky-clean image, Karen was of course more than touched by tragedy; at least one of the more hopeful of these tunes, "For All We Know," has doubt built right into its title. The best of this is smart, cry-in-your-Evian pop that sounds a lot less dated than it might in your memory. "Close to You" and "Hurting Each Other" are actually soulful claims on their then-new soft-pop tradition, while the towering "Goodbye to Love" is worthy of Rumours-era Christine McVie. Despite some duds, mostly from its later period, 1969-1981 makes its case for this enduring and sometimes classic outfit. --Rickey Wright

This Carpenter's album is great! I consider it to be one of their best! It will make you feel young again as you listen to these heart-warming songs. You can't help but feel that teenage spark when you think someone likes you while listening to them. Karen's voice can never be out-done!So curl up with your favorite someone and enjoy a romantic journey with the Carpenters. Or sit back and relax alone as you listen to these old-time favorites. You will begin to feel special and loved even if you don't have a specific someone in mind!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-04-14

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.

4 out of 5 stars Teach Your Parents Well.......2006-11-22

My mother loved The Carpenters. On long road trips, we'd constantly flip over the "Now & Then" 8-track, listening to both sides. I knew the song transitions so well that I could sing the correct pitch for the next song before it began. If you sing one lyric from that album, I can sing the next. The Carpenters' songs are haunting, and I'm not sure altogether the most sound basis for framing a child's concepts of love. From "This Masquerade" to "I Can't Make Music" to "The End of the World" to "Superstar" to "Yesterday Once More." People who think The Carpenters just sang watered-down covers and lightweight songs probably have not listened to them closely.

My older sister was a member of her high school homecoming court. She was asked to sing at the homecoming assembly and she chose to sing The Carpenters' version of "Sometimes." I learned most of my facial singing expressions from her and have always tried to emulate what she could do with her eyes. If you were around in the 1970s or 80s, you are probably familiar with "Sometimes." But even if you know the song, here are some uncommon things you may not have noticed at first. It is unusual for a pop song because it begins with no vocals and a minute and thirty second piano introduction, arranged and played masterfully by Juilliard trained Richard Carpenter, highlighting the thoughtful melody lines, with excellent chord choices & changes and ebbing tempos. Most songs have multiple verses and a repeated chorus. Karen Carpenter's butter-melting tones and heart-piercing ability to convey the thoughts & feelings of this song did not require repetition. The following lyrics are sung only once, then the song concludes.

"Sometimes not often enough we reflect upon the good things, and those thoughts always center around those we love
And I think about those people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten to say, 'Thank you', and just how much I love them"

Parents should consider the music they play around their children, because their children may be effected by it.

"And you, of tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you'll know by . . . and know they love you"

It doesn't matter if your parents came from the lush and pensive lands of The Carpenters or "from the lands of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow," if you listen closely to their music, you may discover magical things about them. And despite what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young suggest, you may even learn to understand some of "the fears your elders grew by."

"How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war . . .
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, for peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing."

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday Once More.......2006-08-10

I get so choked up when I hear The Carpenters. It was my mother's favorite group and she used to play their records day and night and sing along in perfect harmony with Karen Carpenter while I sat there looking dreamily at my mother thinking she was the most beautiful woman in the world.

My mother, just like Karen Carpenter, passed away at a relatively young age; 38. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I have surpassed that age. I think what makes me the saddest about my mother's passing, is that I no longer remember what her voice sounded like. Unfortunately, a box of tapes that actually had my mother's voice on them got misplaced so I remember my mother through this collection.

And depending on the day, I sometimes cry and I sometimes laugh, but I always smile and remember those precious few years I had with the most beautiful woman in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional collection of Ennio Morricone musics.......1998-12-19

This compilation contains main titles and themes from film scores that Ennio Morricone composed between 1969 and 1981, previously released only as 45 rpm singles in Italy, and available here for the first time. This two CDS deliver very well the extraordinary talent, sensibility and unique style of Morricone. I recommend these excellent 2 CDS for all lover of Ennio Morricone.

5 out of 5 stars Unmistakable sound, impeccable mixing.... simply fantastic!.......2007-06-07

Being a fan of the Carpenters for over 30 years, there's really not a lot that I could write that has not been written before by others and myself. There's also probably NOT a mix that I haven't heard and had an issue at one point of Richard's continuous "dabbling" in the mixes of these classic tunes.

However, I must report to you - any Carpenters fan or anyone interested in finding out more about them - that THIS is the album to buy, ESPECIALLY if you are able to take advance of the SACD benefits.

Simply fantastic, words cannot explain the emotions that came back to me in full force when listening to this CD in surround, mixed the way that is. A new version of "Superstar" and also "It's Going To Take Some Time" (I believe!) as well as "tweaks" all through the mixes will make you think that Karen is alive & well & standing in the room with you.

Unbelieveable quality, and a refreshing sound that immediately unleashes the timelessness of these songs and the beauty of Karen's voice.

A MUST for any real fan.

5 out of 5 stars Golden CD of Carpenters.......2007-05-10

This CD is very good. It is a level of all-songs superiors. The voice of Karen has a transparent feeling beautifully, and composition of Richard and an arrangement are refined and, moreover, have an intelligence. Such wonderful Duo will not appear again.

5 out of 5 stars You Never Heard The Carpenters Before This.......2007-04-14

Twenty-one songs by the Carpenters on one SACD disc is a wonder to behold. Karen Carpenter has always had pitch-perfect vocals and the arrangements were carefully recorded. However, in SACD format, you can literally hear minor things you never could before - background studio noises, breathing, minor sounds that make you feel as if you are IN the studio. Enough has been said about this remarkable set of songs and how they continue to effect generation after generation with their playfulness and emotional range. This is about as good as albums get for song material and the SACD format just about makes it beyond perfect.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Superb SACD Mix!.......2007-01-21

Combine Karen Carpenter's vocals, wonderful lyrics, clear instrumental, and a skilled mixing job done by Richard Carpenter himself, and you have an "other worldly experience" that, I'm warning you now, can get pretty emotional.

This is a must-have. I have 50 surround sound CD's. This makes my top 5.

5 out of 5 stars 70's Nostalga.......2007-01-11

If you liked the Carpenters back in the 70's you will love this CD and if you have a good surround sound system turn it waaaay up and thrill to the backing arrangements as they come through on this CD. If you have a Super Audio player the SACD is superbly produced. I normally hate those folks with "radio controlled" cars that pass me on the highway, you know the ones with the radio volume and bass so loud that the car vibrates - I have to confess that, with this CD, I have become one of them, especially listening to the drums on "Only Yesterday." I loved Karen's voice and her tragic passing was a loss to the entertainment world. Buy this CD and thrill to it all over again.
