This revamped version of the Carpenters' two original Singles LPs may, despite the absence of some Top 40 charters, stand as the definitive single-CD collection of the duo's hits. Included are most of the reasons Karen Carpenter's bring-the-pain vocals are still revered by thrift-shopping college kids and their moms alike. Despite the act's squeaky-clean image, Karen was of course more than touched by tragedy; at least one of the more hopeful of these tunes, "For All We Know," has doubt built right into its title. The best of this is smart, cry-in-your-Evian pop that sounds a lot less dated than it might in your memory. "Close to You" and "Hurting Each Other" are actually soulful claims on their then-new soft-pop tradition, while the towering "Goodbye to Love" is worthy of Rumours-era Christine McVie. Despite some duds, mostly from its later period, 1969-1981 makes its case for this enduring and sometimes classic outfit. --Rickey Wright

The Carpenters,Singles 1969-1981.......2007-06-11
Great Sound.......2007-04-14
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.
Teach Your Parents Well.......2006-11-22
My older sister was a member of her high school homecoming court. She was asked to sing at the homecoming assembly and she chose to sing The Carpenters' version of "Sometimes." I learned most of my facial singing expressions from her and have always tried to emulate what she could do with her eyes. If you were around in the 1970s or 80s, you are probably familiar with "Sometimes." But even if you know the song, here are some uncommon things you may not have noticed at first. It is unusual for a pop song because it begins with no vocals and a minute and thirty second piano introduction, arranged and played masterfully by Juilliard trained Richard Carpenter, highlighting the thoughtful melody lines, with excellent chord choices & changes and ebbing tempos. Most songs have multiple verses and a repeated chorus. Karen Carpenter's butter-melting tones and heart-piercing ability to convey the thoughts & feelings of this song did not require repetition. The following lyrics are sung only once, then the song concludes.
"Sometimes not often enough we reflect upon the good things, and those thoughts always center around those we love
And I think about those people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so very happy
And I count the times I have forgotten to say, 'Thank you', and just how much I love them"
Parents should consider the music they play around their children, because their children may be effected by it.
"And you, of tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams, the one they picks, the one you'll know by . . . and know they love you"
It doesn't matter if your parents came from the lush and pensive lands of The Carpenters or "from the lands of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow," if you listen closely to their music, you may discover magical things about them. And despite what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young suggest, you may even learn to understand some of "the fears your elders grew by."
"How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war . . .
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, for peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing."
Yesterday Once More.......2006-08-10
My mother, just like Karen Carpenter, passed away at a relatively young age; 38. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I have surpassed that age. I think what makes me the saddest about my mother's passing, is that I no longer remember what her voice sounded like. Unfortunately, a box of tapes that actually had my mother's voice on them got misplaced so I remember my mother through this collection.
And depending on the day, I sometimes cry and I sometimes laugh, but I always smile and remember those precious few years I had with the most beautiful woman in the world.

Customer Reviews:
Unmistakable sound, impeccable mixing.... simply fantastic!.......2007-06-07
However, I must report to you - any Carpenters fan or anyone interested in finding out more about them - that THIS is the album to buy, ESPECIALLY if you are able to take advance of the SACD benefits.
Simply fantastic, words cannot explain the emotions that came back to me in full force when listening to this CD in surround, mixed the way that is. A new version of "Superstar" and also "It's Going To Take Some Time" (I believe!) as well as "tweaks" all through the mixes will make you think that Karen is alive & well & standing in the room with you.
Unbelieveable quality, and a refreshing sound that immediately unleashes the timelessness of these songs and the beauty of Karen's voice.
A MUST for any real fan.
