Like fellow former Mickey Mouse clubber Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera kicks off her debut album with a teen-lust nugget--in this case, the No. 1 single "Genie in a Bottle"--that the rest of the disc can't possibly live up to. Aguilera has a strong voice, but patterns herself after iffy role models such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Aside from "Genie," most of this music is straight from the cookie cutter, like the less than successfully sultry "When You Put Your Hands on Me" and the Mulan ballad showpiece "Reflection." In chart terms, though, there'll be no stopping her--at least for a while. --Rickey Wright

Back to Basics, Christina Aguilera's first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the--let's call it "sexy"--aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single "Ain't No Other Man," for one, and the hushed stunner "Save Me from Myself" for another. That doesn't mean she's foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you'll reach a playful and familiar raunch; "Candyman" celebrates a "one-stop shop" who "makes the panties drop" to a boogie-woogie beat, and "Nasty Naughty Boy" sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to "sip on my champagne/Cause I'm gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist." Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina's undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they'll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number "I Got Trouble" and "Mercy on Me," an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of "Back in the Day," the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of "Still Dirrty"). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera's baby--she executive-produced, and she's found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to "Ain't No Other Man," written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: "You got soul, you got class/You got style, you're bada--." --Tammy La Gorce

Underneath all Christine Aguilera's coy affectations and vocal gymnastics lurks a rare talent. With her second album, Aguilera allows it to flower by abandoning all pretense at courting the teenage market. Stripped is a seemingly effortless move into weightier adult territory. Using her extraordinary voice as a much subtler instrument, Aguilera sings movingly and with grit and anger about the disintegration of a relationship; she's ultimately stronger for the pain. But that's not her whole agenda. Aguilera also extols the power of women on "Can't Hold Us Down," which features Lil' Kim. Other guests include Dave Navarro, Redman, and Alicia Keys. Aguilera cowrote most of the songs on the disc and produced one cut. She also partnered with former 4 Non Blondes leader and Pink collaborator Linda Perry on four songs, which gives Aguilera a rock edge that she has never before displayed. --Jaan UhelszkiAlbum Description

Pure soul.......2007-07-09
This album is one of my favorites. The best songs, in my opinion, had an R&B flavor b/c that ultimately does her voice the most justice.
So Emotional 10/10, Somebody's Somebody 9/10, Genie In a Bottle 7/10, Obvious 9/10, When you put your hands on me 9/10 and Reflectino 7/10 to me are the best tracks. Great buy!

x-tina timeline.......2007-01-02
*Christina Aguilera- Okay, u gotta admit, she was really rockin da house when her first album in 1999 came out. She actually had talent when she first started! She truly was a pop princess in 1999. I loved everything on dat album.
*Stripped- Uh-oh. Her talent started to drop. Wuzzup wit dat? What was with her! She was horrible when Stripped came out! Plus, she had audiences of many different ages, and dis was not one of her best talents yet. She was really in her dirrrty days.
*Back to Basics- Oh. My. Gawd. Her. Talent. Went. Up. By. Alot. !!! She was DEFINITELY past her dirrrty days. "Aint No Other Man" "Hurt" "Candy Man" and more...WOW!! She truly and really has an unique and amazing voice here!!
So, that is a timeline of X-tina or Christina Aguilera's talent of good and bad. She now shines like a beyootiful star. She should win LOADS of Grammy's. Keep on rockin, X-tina!!!

You go, girl! Riding on the coattails of the Latin explosion, teen sensation Christina Aguilera decided to tap into her Ecuadorian roots (on her father's side) and brush up on her Spanish. With her newfound tongue, she translates five tracks of her multiplatinum self-titled debut. "Genie in a Bottle" becomes "Genie Atrapado," "Come On Over" becomes "Ven Conmigo," and her other major hits get code-switched and granted the added value of Spanish guitar and dizzied-up Latin disco beats. Fans, especially those who understand the language, should rush to pick up this album. In the year since Aguilera released her self-titled debut, she's honed her chops and figured out what kind of artist she wants to be: namely, an R&B heavy-hitter, not a pop princess. To prove her staying power and worth, she does serious vocal acrobatics with so much confidence and clarity on Mi Reflejo, you'll forget that five of these songs are old, that all are translated into a language other than her native tongue, and that she's a modest 19 years old. --Heidi ShermanCustomer Reviews:
Awesome Spanish Album.......2007-07-29
1. Genio Atrapado (Trapped Genie): Basically, it's Genie In A Bottle with different lyrics. The lyrics from this version of the song are better than the English version.
2. Falsas Esperanzas (False Hopes): Very sexy salsa song. Christina talks about how she doesn't want the man to give her false expectations on love.
3. El Beso Del Final (The Final Kiss): It's an okay song.
4. Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti (But I Remember You): Very lovely ballad.
She talks about how everything in her life is going well until she remembers an old love and how her world comes crumbling down because of it.
5. Ven Conmigo (Solamente Tu) [Come Over Here (Only You)] - The album version of Come On Over (All I Want Is You).
6. Si No Te Hubiera Conocido (If I Hadn't Met You): Another very lovely ballad. She makes a duet with Luis Fonsi and both of them have chemistry in this song.
7. Contigo En La Distancia (With You In The Distance): My favorite ballad! The lyrics are very aesthetic and her vocals are at its best
8. Cuando No Es Contigo (When I'm Not With You): It's an interesting song. The lyrics are sad, but the song is very upbeat. It's still a pretty good song.
9. Por Siempre Tu (Forever You): I Turn To You with different lyrics.
10. Una Mujer (A Woman): What A Girl Wants with better lyrics.
11. Mi Reflejo (My Reflection): Reflection with better lyrics
Overall, the album has more aesthetic lyrics than Christina's debut album and songs are amazing.

WHY ARE YOU REMIXING "HURT"?.......2007-04-04
"Hurt" is a heart-felt sad ballad full of grief and regret - hardly something to go dancing over. I suppose if the remixes possibly could retain the intensity of the sadness contained in the lyrics of this song, they could give creedance to the 80's new wave song "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes"! I heard one version playing and it did not work, it was just a remix for the sake of being such, and with so much other material available that lends itself well to a remix, "Hurt" should have not been messed with as it becomes lost in the shuffle and will hardly be a memorable remix. Now having said that regarding making this song into a dance version, there is a remix that works somewhat - thus earning this single a 2-star rating; It is a chill-out version with is still in ballad form but with more ambient flair. The feel is still intact to an extent but it can not match the original in conveying the heart-wrenching lyrics' song of grief over losing someone over foolishness. Perhaps the most tear-jerking part of this song is the bridge and chorus but in the chill-out version that quality is diminshed.
Perhaps a "double A-side" cd single with the original, the chill-out remix
and the remixes for "Ain't No Other Man" would have been a better deal thus giving us the remixes to a highly energetic song with "remix" written all over it.
Great remixes!!!.......2007-04-01

Like Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera never met a melissmatic phrase (that gospel-like elongation of syllables) that she couldn't love. And she deploys more than her share throughout this 11-song holiday disc. Her excessive style is best-suited to "Merry Christmas, Baby"--complete with a surprise cameo by Dr. John. When she isn't blowing out her chords with embarrassing emoting, at times, Aguilera sounds like she's shouting. Still, you know that if you don't get this for your teenaged fan, it's you who will get that lump of coal in your stocking. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

This reissue of the Boston favorite's 1995 debut clearly highlights her greatest strength: her voice. Susan Tedeschi has been singing since she was 4 years old, and it shows; her voice has the power and control that comes from long experience. If her version of "Hound Dog" doesn't blow the top off of Big Mama Thornton's original, it's still a strong effort, and she's just as good with her own material. The title track--penned by Adrienne Hayes, guitarist for Tedeschi's band--is especially good, as the slow tempo allows Tedeschi to stretch her pipes a bit. Unfortunately, even by the release of Just Won't Burn, Tedeschi's guitar hadn't caught up with her voice, and the discrepancy is even more obvious here--there's a spark, but it doesn't quite catch fire. Still, there's no question that her heart's in the right place, and if her guitar work continues to improve, there'll be no stopping her. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
My cat could probably mix better! I'm serious!.......2007-02-08
In order to listen to this without getting a terrible headache, I had to mix it down to mono and apply some fake stereo. Pathetic! Who let this thing get stamped out without even the most cursory inspection of the content quality?
[...] But please, please, please play blues guitar on your next CD, OK? Shove those those studio pickers out of the way and do what you do best! And take JH out of your Rolodex!
she's great , this recording well . . . . .......2005-07-12
i'm really looking forward to her new album - supposedly coming out this fall
Great music, bad production.......2003-04-01
The production on this CD is really pretty spotty. The first track "It's Up to You" has a very muddy quality to it and "It Hurts Me Too" is painful to listen to on headphones with the mixing from left to right channels constantly moving. Most of the tracks however, are adequately mixed.
All in all, this is well worth listening to if you're a Tedeschi fan, but her following CD's are far superior to this one. She just keeps getting better.
A good record.......2002-09-30
This gal knows how to play the blues!.......2002-07-12
It's hard to say which song on this album is my favorite. It's like trying to decide which one of your children you love more. But I will say that her interpretation of "Hound Dog" is not one to be missed. I would also have to say that the instrumental work on "You're On My Hair" is great! Not to mention, she can play a mean slide guitar! (When you hear "Locomotive" you'll know what I mean). I recommend this album to anyone who has a deep respect for the blues, you won't be disappointed!
