Don't expect a major artistic statement, but if you're one of the many who enjoy Ringo Starr's brand of bouncy, good-natured, All-Starr band pop, Choose Love won't disappoint. Granted, the songs (true to the title, mostly about love) break no new ground, lyrically or musically, but Ringo's in exceptionally good voice throughout and Mark Hudson's production--a mix of Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles, a good helping of Traveling Wilburys, and a bit of rockabilly--is well suited to the tracks. High points are the shuffle of "Give Me Back the Beat"; the 12-string jangle of "I Do"; the circus psychedelia of the Chrissie Hynde duet, "Don't Hang Up"; and the entirely sincere "Oh My Lord," which, featuring Billy Preston on organ, Robert Randolph on wailing steel, and the Rose Stone Gospel Choir, is a page right out of the Quiet Beatle's songbook (in fact, Ringo considers it his "My Sweet Lord" and played Olivia Harrison an early demo because he felt "George would have loved it"). The Beatles aesthetic is all over Choose Love, and, with a few exceptions ("The Long and Winding Road is more than a song / Tomorrow Never Knows What Goes On"), it's all for the best. Ringo fans will be delighted and listeners to oldies stations may have a new item for their wish lists. --Benjamin Lukoff Solo Beatles Recommendations

Bassist Charlie Haden was an integral part of Ornette Coleman's pioneering avant-garde groups in the '50s and '60s and led his own equally forward-thinking Liberation Music Orchestra. His ensemble Quartet West, with tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, drummer Larance Marable, and pianist Alan Broadbent, revealed a sentimental side of his musical personality that surprised many. This recording, with string arrangements by Broadbent, sounds like a soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler film as Haden's sturdy bass tones make him a worthy supporting actor. But although Shirley Horn's ethereal voice sparkles on "Lonely Town," "In Love in Vain," and "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," and crooner Bill Henderson's towering pipes are radiant on "Why Did I Choose You," "Ruth's Waltz," "You My Love," and "Easy on the Heart," all of the material is in pretty much the same ballad tempo, which, compounded by the time length of the CD, robs it of the romantic resonance it could truly shine on the listener. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:
Age breeds a shining moment.......2003-11-20
Nice but dismissable........2001-08-09
In any case, it's always a welcome experience to hear Shirley Horn; the revival of a touching ballad like "In Love in Vain" merits our appreciation; and though I was never a big fan of Bill Henderson (an acquired taste), he deserves to be recorded based on the evidence of this recording.
In sum, this album is more than anything else a "sampler" and should have been priced accordingly.
Disappointing by Quartet West standards.......2001-05-09
You can see the logic behind this subsequent album: instead of using dusty old recordings, why don't we use today's state-of-the-art production to capture the voices of several current artists? And why don't we let Alan orchestrate the whole album?
The trouble is that the orchestration, beautiful though it is throughout, constrains the band terribly. And the vocals swamp the album. (Actually the Jo Stafford track on 'Always Say Goodbye' is one of the weakest on the album.) They say that the saxophone is the instrument closest to the human voice, and it is Ernie Watts who suffers most on this album, The sax is simply crowded out by all the singing. It is only on the stand-out track, 'Prelude en la mineur', an instrumental re-working of a Ravel piece, that Watts finally gets a chance to let rip.
Shirley Horn's vocals are fine, particularly on 'Lonely Town'. But I simply cannot listen to any of the tracks containing Bill Henderson's voice, and sadly, there are four of them.
The most touching song is the last one, where Haden himself bravely takes the vocal lead. It's a song his mother used to sing on the radio, back in the early 1940s, when the entire Haden family would appear on KWTO Springfield. It is a farewell to the dead, and also a reassurance that one day they will meet again.
If you want a quick survey of this CD, check out tracks #1, #9 and #13. It's a long way from the days of Haden's playing with Ornette Coleman and the Liberation Orchestra, and it's very mellow.
If you breathe and have ears, buy this record!.......2001-04-15
A Night and a Lonely Town.......2000-05-24
Regardless of which side of the Atlantic you envision on your moody musical journey, this is definitely a lounging type of music, perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons, after-theatre drives around town on warm summer evenings, warm candle-lit baths, or romantic dinners for two. The beautifully romantic ballads range from the longing "Lonely Town" to the mostly-resolute "I'm Going to Laugh You Right Out of My Life" to the quietly complacent "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Interspersed with these great standards, however, are wonderful instrumental pieces which frame the remaining vocals with stunningly dramatic moods.
The only flaw is the rather unappealing voice of Bill Henderson, who seems to be suffering from a weak set of lungs, if not from lack of enthusiasm. Henderson seems to strive for the vocal capabilities of Shirley Horn, who sings on 1, 4, 7 and 10, but is incapable of achieving those same dramatic pitches of his fellow artist. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job on "Ruth's Waltz" and "Easy on the Heart" even if "Why Did I Choose You" is downright painful to listen to. Haden, who sings on 13, seems similarly incapable of reaching Horn's heights, but "Wayfaring Stranger," the traditional song he chose to render, is capable of carrying itself with the slow somber tone it evokes in the listener.
Regardless of its faults, this remains a beautiful album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the kind of sit-at-home music it captures so very well in its beautifully jazzy tunes that are, at the very least, easy on the ears.

It's a very good album.......2006-01-05
Overall, the album is a bit over-produced. The surf-guitar on "Free Drinks" seems out of place, and Ringo's duet with Chrissie Hynde, "Don't Hang Up," is disappointing. Fortunately it's offset by the likes of "Satisfied."
Although "Oh My Lord" features Billy Preston, it's essentially a lesser version of "My Sweet Lord." Still, "Me and You" is a great ballad.
"Some People" sounds an awful lot like "Don't Know a Thing About Love," from "Time Takes Time." Similarly, "Hard to Be True" is reminiscent of "I Will Follow Him" by Peggy March.
All things considered, it's a very good album. I'm glad to see that Ringo's still inspired to make music, and look forward to his next release.
It don't come easy but Ringo did it!.......2005-12-10
Ringo has a kick ass band behind him, and Mark Hudson keeps it all together.
The cd has the sound of a very well recorded vinyl album..No other cd I've ever bought sounds like this one..technically brilliant!
The best songs, "Fading In, fading Out". ,"Choose Love", "Free Drinks", and "Don't hang up" are pop masterpieces. Ringos in a real groove. Some songs are okay at best, and that explains the 4 star rating.
The simplicity of the messages throughout the disc makes it an uplifiting, almost spiritual experience.
There's plenty of Beatles nostalgia in the playing, and there are even references to Beatle song titles here and there.
The rhythm and bass pattern of at least two songs instantly conjures up the musical illusion that perhaps Paul McCartney and George Harrison were in the studio to back Ringo up. The title track sounds like son of "Taxman"..but it's an original tune and a rockin homage to George.
You can hear the fun everyone had while making this cd....even
Billy Preston ("fifth Beatle"?), plays some soulful keyboard on a track or two.
This disc has an immediacy and sincerity to it. Okay, Ringo is no Paul Mccartney, but his singing sounds okay on songs written for his range....Hey, Madonna is no Mariah Carey either!
Ringos organic , simple vocals work well when you possess the disarming charm of Ringo Starr. He puts you at ease, because he's glam free...it's all real! Overall, an unexpected pleasure that doesn't get old even after several listens. I wish more people would give this cd a try.
If you're shopping for a cd that will make you feel good....CHOOSE LOVE!

Album Description
Released for the first time ever, this concert recording of Jan DeGaetani showcases the legendary mezzo's work in the felid of early music- recorded in 1977, and the peak of her powers. It is a little known fact the DeGaetani's career started as a performer of early music, so that this disc is a revelatory addition to her discography. The spectacular flexibility and purity of intonation that DeGaetani brought to so many contemporary scores serve her beautifully in this well-recorded document. Accompanied by the great lutenist Paul O'Dette, as well as viola da gamba player Judith Davidoff and a shawm player Philip West, this recital ranges from the Medieval music through the Renaissance, and includes music by John Dowland, Donato de Cascia, Hayne van Ghizeghem, Giulio Caccini, and Oswald von Wolkenstein.

Again and again, but not anymore........2007-01-10
Unfortunately, his co-producer from this album, Mark Hudson, didn't make the tour because of a "scheduling conflict" according to Beatlefan magazine. He was supposed to play for the entire tour. But as reported, not only did he not make the tour but Ringo is finished with Mark as his collaborator and producer. Well, well.
Get this CD before its gone...especially the Dual-Disc version. Its Super Audio portion is crystal clear and oh-so-punchy in its sonics. Much better than the standard issue. And note on the back of the CD tray who produced it...a little play on the Lennon-McCartney / McCartney-Lennon issue between Paul and Yoko regarding writer's credits from Paul's "Live in the U.S." booklet. Ha! Ya gotta love it at the top!

Choose Love - Choose Great Rock 'N Roll!.......2006-06-08
Choose Love brings in many guitar riffs made famous by George Harrison in many of the Beatles' songs. However, Ringo presents them in such a way that is it not at all plagiarism, and uses the riffs in new and creative ways to adequately fit the song. The borrowed riffs make perfect sense in their placement and add to the songs instead of subtract.
Choose Love may not be considered fresh to many. However, due to the lack of good classical rock released within the past decade, Ringo's tribute to standard "feel-good" Rock `N Roll is a welcome change from the typical singing of unintelligible lyrics. The album has been produced very well in the recording studio of Ringo's home due to the album's wonderful blend of dynamics. Ringo made sure that his lyrics were intelligble and struck close to home.
In Choose Love, the namesake song of the album, we're first introduced to a memorable guitar riff electrifying the soul followed with the strong drum beat Ringo which made him famous. The lyrics accurately reflect the inner-harmony that Ringo feels towards the people of the world. Guitar solos, drum beats, lyrical strengths, are all important factors that draw people into this song.
This is an album that will bring a smile to your face.
We are waiting for the Storytellers tv show !.......2005-12-23
