Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The boy balladeers of 'N Sync have always kept in step with their competition, but with Celebrity, they've entered a different race altogether. Members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez (who co-wrote and co-produced most of the tracks on this album) have drawn on R&B, hip-hop, and electronica to make a remarkably adult mix. While younger fans will love the disc (it is 'N Sync, after all), older listeners will be surprised and pleased by the Prince-influenced "Gone," the Miami bass beat of "The Two of Us," and the Stevie Wonder harmonica cameo on "Something Like You." The disc only fails in its more predictable territory: the title track's lyrics are hopelessly generic ("Would you be so into me / if I wasn't a celebrity"). The Swedish-pop machine (also behind Britney Spears) cranks out two solid dance tracks ("Tell Me, Tell Me...Baby" and "Just Don't Tell Me That"), but his offerings are hardly as innovative, or as much fun, as the band's own contributions. Overall, Celebrity, is a triumph, and unlike many of their teen-pop peers, the members of 'N Sync (or Timberlake and Chasez, at least) promise solid careers ahead. --Courtney Kemp

After his rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" on the infamous Golden Throats album (though it first appeared on the Transformed Man LP), one could argue that the world needed a new William Shatner album about as much as it needed a big-screen remake of TJ Hooker. But Shatner's back all the same with an intriguing, introspective collection of mostly spoken-word tracks that are all the more compelling when it becomes clear that Has Been is, in fact, no joke. Ben Folds played on and produced the record, creating rich, melodic, and varied pop musical backgrounds to Shatner's world-weary, boozy-suave yet thoroughly impassioned delivery. Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins, Brad Paisley, and Adrian Belew also stop by to lend their divergent talents. Highlights include the Rollins/Shatner rant "I Can't Get Behind That" and the Folds/Mann/Shatner collaboration "That's Me Trying", which tells the painful story of an attempted family reconciliation. Shatner mixes a healthy amount of self-awareness with a just a dollop of self-mockery and then combines it all with plenty of raw vulnerability to create an effect that is surprisingly touching, highly entertaining, and unlike any music you've ever heard. --John Moe

Album Description

From pop-culture icon William Shatner comes Has Been, an album unlike anything you've ever heard before. Produced and arranged by Ben Folds and featuring numerous notable guest appearances, Has Been is the result of the collision of two great creative forces — a surprisingly pop-driven, lyrically potent collection of songs to enlighten and entertain.

Throughout Has Been, Shatner's own insightful lyrics are masterfully woven into perfect pop melodies written and arranged by Ben Folds. Giving Shatner and Folds a hand on the project is an incredible lineup of singers and musicians, including Jon Auer, Adrian Belew, Matt Chamberlain, Joe Jackson, Lemon Jelly, Aimee Mann, Brad Paisley, Henry Rollins and Sebastian Steinberg.

Highlights include the poignant "That's Me Trying," penned by Ben Folds with High Fidelity author Nick Hornby, a brilliant version of the Pulp Britpop classic "Common People," featuring vocals by Joe Jackson and closing track, "Real," a duet with country star Brad Paisley, written exclusively for this project.

5 out of 5 stars Capn Kirk at his best!.......2007-06-08

If you like Willam Shatner you will love this cd, lots of fun and the duets are excellent. Great cd for a nice car ride.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album - lay aside your preconceptions and give it a listen.......2007-05-26

My brother sent me a copy of this saying more or less the same thing as the title above - just try it, go on, just try it. I'm glad I did. Listen to the opening track and make up your own mind from there.

By the way, if you like this CD you will love Ponderous by 2nu.

5 out of 5 stars Came for Folds, stayed for Shatner.......2007-05-15

I acquired this album solely because one of my favorite artists, Ben Folds, was producing it. I wasn't a fan of The Transformed Man, but I had to give this a go; musically, at least, it was sure to please. I was surprised to find Shatner's rendition of "Common People" to be exceedingly listenable (and in fact enjoyable!), but not as surprised as I was to find the whole CD to be good. Not just good, but excellent. William Shatner has made an album that is emotional, intentionally funny in some parts, and a marvelous listen. Folds fleshed out the tracks with excellent production and backing, but the writing and even, yes, the delivery are stand-outs. Truly, the music is just a backdrop for the spoken-word poetry that this record is all about.

This album is a rewarding listen. It is unfortunate that so many would dismiss it simply because it's a William Shatner record.

4 out of 5 stars A Gem to the Mix.......2007-04-17

William Shatner, the world renowned genius and space extraordinare, takes the wheel of a Mini Cooper and literally drives up and down California, hitting every nook and cranny in his long and fruitful existence. Has Been, the long awaited follow up to Shatner's decidingly tasteful music career, is one of those albums that one might toss aside or value next to The Rolling Stone's Exile on Main Street.

Why?

Take the fundamentals of lounge, the rocking soul lessons from piano and guitar guru Ben Folds, and the swagger and style of William Shatner... it's priceless originality. The man, Shatner that is, is bold enough to go where no one will go, and further.

"Common People", a cover nonetheless, opens Has Been with monumental proportions. Shatner's spoken word glides carelessly over punk rock anthemic chords and once Folds' vocals layer over, it's musical chocolate. "It Hasn't Happened Yet" is relaxing, even if the musical undertones scream Light FM.

"What Have You Done" is moving, to say the least. Shatner speaks from a dark room, away from his own self embodiment and gives a confession. There is no music, but his voice carries something that likens to Jim Morrison on American Prayer.

"Together" and "Familiar Love" are the highlights of the album, sounding more Moby, Jon Brion, or Burt Baccarach than anything else.
However, "Ideal Woman" kicks high gear into that familiar Shatner territory with ingenius and comical lyrics, though you can see his expressions even if you're not watching him.

Contributions from Henry Rollins is a positive facet to Shatner's now growing collaborations; however, "Real" with Brad Paisley stinks of cheese and ends the album on a ridiculously sour note unfortunately.

Shatner is win or lose with people. His style is non linear with what music is expected to be like today, which is what makes the idea of him so appealing. Has Been is a collection of some great stories that were turned to killer songs on behalf of Ben Folds.

Thank you.

When last we saw Courtney Love, she was performing on the silver screen and posing for Versace, a far cry from her formative days stumbling across stages wearing ripped thrift-store clothing. But Love's Hollywood transformation is just the latest in her crusade for adoration, whatever the environment. And Celebrity Skin is just the latest manifestation of that obsession. Instead of screaming in rage over a muscular din of power chords, Love sings in a restrained, melodic alto voice; the band matches the euphony with rhythms and hooks that draw from such mainstream acts as Fleetwood Mac, the Go-Go's, and, of course, Smashing Pumpkins, whose frontman, Billy Corgan, cowrote five songs. What makes Celebrity Skin more than another good rock album, however, is Love's lyrics, which remain confessional and scathing, addressing such topics as physical abuse ("Hit So Hard"), drugs ("Use Once and Destroy"), the music industry ("Awful," "Boys on the Radio"), and her late husband's suicide ("Reasons to Be Beautiful"). If nothing else, Celebrity Skin is proof to all the skeptics that superstars have feelings, too. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Rock Albums Ever.......2007-05-22

As emotionally drained as any Courtney Love shenanigans can make us, she is foremost a musician and this is her and thus her band's greatest achievement in a relatively short list of recorded music. Ditching the complete garage grunge angst of Pretty On The Inside and Live Through This, Courtney and company brought Billy Corgan in for a couple things and went to California for inspiration. Conjuring up images of the 70s California rock scene, Courtney left a lot her angst in the Northwest and went for more melody. I love every single song on this disc and when it came out I played it over and over - from the beginning guitar crunch and Courtney's vocal "oh make me over/ I'm all I want to be" the title cut breaks into the catchy yet dramatic "Awful" followed by "Hit So Hard" and it goes on and on with a radio friendly tune thrown in before crunching into the pain grunge we love from our Courts... so much better than her ill fated (and I wanted to love it) solo album from a few years ago - for those unsure of Hole's reasons for success and with an ear more for melody than angst, this is the CD to go to.

5 out of 5 stars One of Hole's Best.......2007-02-27

Originally I thought this was too poppy, but its actually a very nice polished rock album. Their are a couple of songs that are too sugary, but its still a good CD and worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-11-11

Ok, I didn't find any Hole cd to buy here in Brazil, that is why I bought it from Amazon.com. It took 15 days to arrive in my house, very fast.

Well, I decided to buy Hole because I was curious to hear Courtney Love singing. I started to hear this cd through web radio and I loved it, that's why I bought. I know this is the most commercial Hole cd but it is nice to hear all the time. Now I'm planning to buy the rest.

Yes, my opinion for you, if you are in doubt or if you are curious too is 'buy it'.

4 out of 5 stars The Skin Controversy.......2006-11-03

Hole's "Celebrity Skin" is nothing like any of Love's other albums. That's just a statement of fact; don't buy this if you want to know what she's really about. Love is grunge and screaming and almost-vulgar honesty, and you don't get a lot of that on this record. But if you want to hear some high-quality, edge-of-mainstream music, then this is a good bet.

"Skin" has, for better or for worse, changed Love's image. It was regarded by many Nirvana and early Hole fans as a sell-out, a betrayal of their earlier work. In the mainstream music world, "Skin" was a hit. It's now the album most people recognize when they think of Hole, and it had decently popular hits in "Celebrity Skin" (also known as "Make Me Over"), "Malibu," and "Reason to be Beautiful." Love has stated many times that her intention on this album was to make a pop record; she says that most musical elitists don't "get it." She was sick of comments about her one-dimensional act (a howling product of drugs and promiscuity with a foothold in screeching guitars and raw lyrics) and this does showcase her versatility as an artist.

What you'll find in "Celebrity Skin" depends on what you're looking for. If it's an extension of "Live Through This" or "Pretty on the Inside," stay away. If it's your first taste of Hole and you're a little nervous about it, or if you think their other material is too loud and unpolished, this is perfect for you.

But if it's your first Hole purchase and you think you're ready for the unleashed, Kobain-influenced Love, I would recommend "Live Through This." Happy buying!

5 out of 5 stars Grunge plus Go-Go's? Hole Greater than the Sum of its Parts.......2006-10-22

I never liked grunge -- it wasn't even offensive, just slightly annoying. (Grunge hit while I was at Concrete Paradise College in Sacramento, where students wore creased flannel, pre-faded jeans, and unscuffed hiking boots... uhhhh?!) But post-grunge Celebrity Skin may have the most staying power of all my 90's albums... (maybe rivalled by Brit-pop Blur's Great Escape)....

To this layman's ears, Celebrity Skin works because the set list is eclectic, the songs freakin' rock, Courtney Love's vocals are second to none (even the cracks are gorgeous), the style is attacking rather than grungey-internalizing, the takes on Hollywood are more incisive love/hate than a Day of the Locusts novel, and the HARMONIES are richly gorgeous -- floating from edgy to ethereal... angelic.... (Belinda Carlisle adds uncredited backing vocals and Go-Go Charlotte Caffey pens a song).

In short: Imagine you're a teen, and the hottest girl - who happens to smoke and yell at her parents - just transferred to your Burbank High School. You go to pick her up, and she's scrubbed fresh and clean... but the edge still comes through. When she snaps, "Go &#* Yourself!", you're hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic Genius.......2006-11-28

Captain Kirk not only saves entire galaxies while impressing buxom beauties, but also manages to bare his soul in the most extraordinary collection of song and poetry the universe has ever seen. I dare you not to cry at the aching despair of "Spleen." It's okay, let it out, because in a few moments you will rejoice with sheer exuberance to the strains of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Captain Kirk truly makes this psychedelic gem his own. I personally wish he would cover every Beatles song, because only with his magic touch could they achieve greatness.

Bob Dylan and Shakespeare also benefit from the genius of Kirk, as do many others. I'll be honest. I actually feel my I.Q. soar to superhuman levels when I listen to this disc. You owe it to yourself and society to bring this glorious masterpiece into your life. Under the guidance of the Captain, you too will be... TRANSFORMED!

5 out of 5 stars So bad it's good!!!.......2006-11-28

I found this bizarre gem in the used bin at Soundwaves in Houston. Bought it up and never looked back. After many years, it is still the most sought after (and frequently borrowed!) CD in my collection.

Hats off to you Captain Quirk! Nobody does it quite like you (and maybe that's not a bad thing after all!)

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. Mr Shatner!!

3 out of 5 stars An album with a split personality.......2006-11-14

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Mr. Tambourine Man, It was a Very Good Year... Mr. Shatner's refreshingly innovative and entertaining renditions of these classics are iconic in their own right and well worth listening to multiple times.

King Henry, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet... well, I'll just say I have seen Mr. Shatner give superb performances and in comparison I regard these efforts as, um... not his best work to date.

It is hard for me to listen to this album in its entirety.

I do hope that Mr. Shatner enjoyed making these recordings. He has earned more than enough laurels in his long and distinguished career entertaining us to be allow leeway in the remainder of his career for fun and experimentation in whatever endeavors he chooses.

3 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!.......2006-08-09

Ok, let's get this straight! Musically/theatrically, it gets a 0/5. Comically, it's PERFECT!!! I mean, this makes me laugh so hard I cry. You can't take this seriously. He ACTS out SONGS!!! It's like intepretative dancing, but vocally, and really REALLY BAD!!!! This really should be under comedy.

1 out of 5 stars It is trash!.......2007-01-27

I used to be an *N Sync fan back in the day, not a fanatic but just a fan of their music. Once this CD came out I thought about possibly buying it til I heard most of it at a record store and I was ashamed to have liked their music. The song "Pop" isn't even that good, but needless to say that was their only good song on that CD. It is best to just save your money. Justin is doing better without the guys.

1 out of 5 stars I don't own this CD........2006-12-31

I bought this through Amazon for my older daughter when it first came out. She tired of it after a year. Currently, it is one of the dog's frisbee's.

1 out of 5 stars omg!.......2006-09-25

no no no, i just don't like it, i recieved this for my birthday last month and i was frustrated with my in laws because for one, this cd is quite old. 2nd, this cd is hideous, besides the catchy "pop" the whole cd fails to strike a nerve with any of my senses. I recomend just buying something recent or artistically endeavouring, not childish and ridiculous

1 out of 5 stars Has Beens.......2006-08-01

I'm embarrassed to admit that I actually bought this album when it came out. After listening to this album twice, I had to sell it ASAP because it was pop music at its absolute worse. J.C. can't sing at all. He tries too hard to sound like he has soul but it's just so painlessly obvious that he has no kind of soul to begin with and his voice is strained. Justin Timberfake sings like a wench and I don't know who told him he was hot stuff because he looks like a wimpy fairy. Speaking of fairies, I guess it was no surprise when Lance came "out." Other than that, I'm glad that these fools are done and over with. They contributed nothing to the world of music except garbage. Justin Timberfake is still holding the torch, but not for long. Skip anything by NSYNC as if it were the plague.

5 out of 5 stars In the...jingle...jangle...morning...I'll come follow ya........2007-05-21

Wow. wow. I'm not at all a "trekkie", never liked the shows, but always appreciated shatner for what he...does for pop culture. I'm 18 so missed the age of lusting after him, but get that he's...there. I got this on itunes on a whim. So Good. So Good. It is by far the most hypnotizing album I have ever heard. To hear young Shatner "sing" (his album 'has been' prepared me somewhat) and to hear Nimoy sing...I think I just might be high from simply hearing such tones. lol, buy it if you like bizarre. buy it if you like Nimoy or Shatner. buy it if you can't afford pot.

4 out of 5 stars so sad so sad.......2007-04-10

Ok I bought this knowing full well it would be bad...bad...bad. But that's what happens when actors try to be musicians. I love both Shatner and Nimoy and if you are a Trekkie/Trekker...you need this. But if you are just a music lover, you don't.

If you are into comedy though...it is pretty funny

4 out of 5 stars Scariest album I ever bought.......2007-03-08

Let me be clear from the outset: get this album only if you are the kind of person who enjoys the bizarre. It is incredibly strange to hear Leonard Nimoy sing - actually sing in a deep, almost baritone voice - about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. His rendition of Peter Paul and Mary's Hammer Song (If I Had a Hammer) is hysterical. And Shatner, oh, Bill, what were you thinking? This album takes campy to new heights.

5 out of 5 stars Weird But Good.......2007-01-17

If you are looking for that weird cd, and one that will cause you to shake your head, this is the one for you. First, let us just say, that although Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner give it their best effort, it is not classical singing that you will be listening to. But, it is just good enough (or bad enough-depending on your tastes), that if you are a fan of either of these two actors, you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars to go where no man has gone before.......2007-01-16

i would have given this cd 5 stars but there was just somthing missing. it mighte be mr. scotty doing a bagpipe solo, or mr soolo playing the skin flute, or bones haveing a drum solo in the middle. i'm just not sure i konw its missing somthing, and that something is missing from your colletion.

4 out of 5 stars The Essential Don Johnson.......2007-04-02

I was quite suprised to find Mr. Johnson has a very good voice, I really enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Sexy Voice.......2007-03-20

*Sigh* What can I say? Don Johnson's sex appeal seems to ooze from the songs... a few songs are not his best, but tolerable with his voice. If you like Don Johnson in any way acting or singing, buy the cd... it has that 80s sounds with sex appeal. This just might be your secret.

5 out of 5 stars Astoundingly Good.......2006-09-16

I bought this CD on a lark because I had seen the videos for Heartbeat and Tell It Like It Is on youtube.com, and I have not stopped playing it since it arrived. I have always loved Don's voice, but put to music, it is even better. Some of the songs have that decidely 80's sound, but others, such as "Tell It Like It Is," "What If It Takes All Night," and "Can't Take Your Memory" are timeless. His voice is perfectly made for the slow ballads and simple love songs. After hearing recently that he is planning on recording again, I can hardly wait, and I will be one of the first to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Don Johnson -- The Essential.......2006-08-29

Although this album is hard to find, it is worth the chase. I always loved Don Johnson, not only is he a wonderful actor, he is an amazing singer. The album "The Essential" has 16 great tracks. Even after all these years, the song "Heartbeat" still gets me singing, this album is definitely worth ordering, no music collection should be without it. Its Jazzy, bluesy, rock, love songs, it's a lot of music genres rolled into one. It has something for everyone on the album, every single song is a hit. Why Don didn't have more hit albums through the years is beyond me. This album proves he is a talented and gifted artist in many ways, both in film, tv, and music. Definite collection piece for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected!.......2006-08-08

I always liked Don's song 'Heartbeat' so I picked up this CD for that song and for the pure novelty value of it. I was pleasantly surprised! My favorite track may be 'Tell It Like It Is' - really great song.

In the 80s it seemed like all singers wanted to be actors and all actors wanted to be singers. Don is one of the only actors turned singer that is worth listening to!

This is just a good CD, plain and simple. Don should have recorded more than two albums.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Fan.......2007-06-08

I have always loved The Return of Bruno. It was something that we partied to in college. I listen and sing along in the car now because it brings back memories of a time when life was much simpler. He is actually a much better singer than you might think. No he is not classically trained. However he does have that rugged sound that you would expect from Bruce. His songs are fun to sing, dance and enjoy with your friends in a good clean day. Music like this is lost on todays sex and violence crazed youth. This is a must have for those of us over 35.

4 out of 5 stars What a hoot!.......2007-04-16

So many times when actors get the idea they should sing, they take themselves far too seriously trying to be "vocalists" instead of just having fun with it. Bruno just has fun with it. He's like the most entertaining karaoke guy at the bar, with crowd-pleasing songs and an energetic delivery. It's like he doesn't realize he can't sing, and that makes for an appealing CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-04-13

I bought this album way back when and listened to it quite a bit. I loved it. I need to dig it out again. No it wasn't GREAT, but it was solid and a LOT of fun!

4 out of 5 stars Bruno serves up a good time.......2006-02-11

This CD is just plain fun. You can find better singers. You can find better bands. You can find better songs. Somehow, Bruce Willis makes it work though and work well.
Maybe because at this time, Bruce was sort of a regular guy. This CD wasn't Bruce trying to be a great singer. This was Bruce having fun and that makes it more enjoyable.
It would be worth it just to hear his version of 'Under the Boardwalk'. Fortunately, he does not stop there. This CD is filled with older (some forgotten) tunes and Bruce breathes new life into them.
If you go into it with the same attitude that Bruce seemed to have, you will not be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars The most unintentionally hilarious album ever made.......2006-01-29

"Am I free later? Well lemme put it to you this way, baby - DOES A COMET LEAVE A CRATER?!" - Lyrics from "Comin' Right Up"

If you can imagine Bruce Willis singing that, you'll have an idea of how terrifically awful this album is. When he says "crater," it's not merely bad (mainly due to the fact that the analogy makes no sense in comparison to his free time) - it's horrifically bad due to his pronunciation of the word "crater" - he also stresses the word, shouting it. The result is something that, vernacually, sounds like:

"What's 'dat...am aye free lad'duh? Well lemme pud'dit to you 'dis way bay-be - DOES A COM-IT LEAVE UH CRAT-UH!!!"

It'll have you spinning on the floor in laughter.

"Under the Boardwalk" is almost as funny.

There Are the Six Studio Sides from her 1933 Films She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel (A Guy What Takes his Time...), Then a Ripely Evocative Sequence of 12 Perhaps Less-than-hi-fi but Hugely Entertaining Numbers from the Original Soundtracks of Five of her Popular 30s Films.

5 out of 5 stars "...and I assure you, I can cure you, if you're feelin' blue, come up and see me some time...".......2006-12-24

I "discovered" Mae West at the age of 12, when a local NYC TV station offered several of her classic films for multiple showings during the summer of 1966. As a soon-to-be-budding gay man, I immediately fell in love with her wit and unabashed approach to sex and sexuality. Over the next several years, I came to appreciate her even more, when I learned that she had actually written many of her own screenplays. I later learned that, even if this was something of an exaggeration, she did write the play that her first starring vehicle was based on, and she also "suggested" dialogue and one-line witticisms for many of her 1930's films. She probably also wrote much of the screenplay for My Little Chickadee, her 1940 vehicle co-starring W. C. Fields.

As time passed, my fascination for her faded, as many of the interests of youth do, but I always retained a respect for her marvelous wit and wonderfully colossal ego. By the time she died in 1980, she had fallen out of fashion with many of her gay male fans, including me, but I did feel an enormous sadness at the passing of such a durable icon. Through the years, I had managed to acquire just about all of her recordings, and came to have a special love for the natural, amazing comic timing and delivery she presented in her vocal efforts, which never strayed far from her style or persona. Now that I am over 50, I have a renewed appreciation for her unique talent, especially since many young people of my acquaintance have (sadly) professed no idea of who she was and what she did. I take heart in the fact that, once exposed to her wit and awesome comic abilities, many people who hadn't even been born when she died at the age of 87 seem to warm to her charms immediately.

The bulk of the tracks contained in this recording are available on other CD's, with the exception of the 1947 Mezzotone recordings (presented here nearly complete) and the extremely rare (I'd never heard it before) 1934 commercial 78 of My Old Flame, with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. On that track, Miss West receives extremely sympathetic accompaniment from the Duke and his great jazz sidemen, which may have something to do with the fact that she and Ellington were lovers for a time, or so I have heard it strongly rumored. For a minute, I thought that the previous reviewer here who mentioned the inclusion of this track was mistaken; the opening verses on this recording sound exactly like the version from the movie soundtrack that fans of Miss West have treasured for years. But after the first chorus, it takes a different and lovely departure from the film soundtrack, and it is clearly a studio effort recorded for the commercial 78 market. What a nice surprise; it's been many years since I'd heard anything "new" by Mae, and this track alone makes the CD well worth its rock-bottom bargain price. I do have one correction to the other review here - according to the liner notes, the 78 of My Old Flame was actually a Victor and not a Brunswick recording (the songs from She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel were released on Brunswick 78's).

The bulk of the Mezzotone sides have also never (to my knowledge) been available on CD before, which never bothered me - I had long ago converted most of Miss West's rare vinyl albums to digital (thanks to the magic of modern technology). This CD leaves out the novelty song, "Page 54", easily the weakest of the eight comedic novelty numbers that comprise the Mezzotone tracks, but it does include the extremely rare "Imaginary Love", one of Miss West's few attempts at serious romantic pop. The inclusion of this track alone makes this CD a must for fans, even for those who have never heard the other relatively obscure Mezzotone sides before. Those fans are in for a treat. Her comic timing, delivery and wit shine through on every track, and the sultry delivery she presents with the song, "Come Up and See Me Some Time" makes it my all-time favorite of her "early" efforts. The song "Come Up and See Me Sometime" was originally recorded by a male singer named Cliff Edwards in 1933, as a tribute to the fact that her famous signature-phrase had entered the English lexicon immediately following the release of She Done Him Wrong. As for the other Mezzotone numbers, the self-parody combined with the poke at censorship of "That's All Brother" is delightful, as is her trade-mark double-entendre and comedic sexual content that permeate each of the other 1947 tracks.

Although the soundtrack recordings presented here have been available on other CD's, they appear to have the benefit of careful re-mastering, and I was impressed by the sound on most of them, despite the disclaimer that they "emanate from soundtrack recordings of the thirties that are primitive by today's standards". I think they sound just fine.

The CD concludes with four tracks from her finest effort, the 1954 Decca album, "The Fabulous Mae West". That album is now also available in its entirety as a separate release, and if you are a fan of the lady and have never heard it, I can only tell you that if you don't pick it up, you are missing what are arguably her greatest and funniest moments in the recording studio.

The "Come Up and See Me Sometime" compilation is a product of the British label, Living Era. I own several of their other titles, which always contain an amazing number of high-quality vintage recordings. I am very happy with all the Living Era CD's I own.

Now, if someone would just see fit to release her marvelously campy 1960's rock and roll albums, Way Out West (which contains surprisingly hearty and effective vocals, considering she was 71 years old at the time it was recorded); the elusive 1968 release, "The Naked Ape" (also known by its reissue title, "Great Balls of Fire") and her curiously blues-infused Christmas album, her CD catalogue would be complete. I had converted the first two of these to digital CD's from original vinyl pressings some time ago for my own use, along with the ultra-rare 20th Century Fox 45 release of the two songs from Myra Breckinridge, but official re-releases of her late material is all that is lacking in the Mae West audio canon. A major revival in the interest of her wonderful and unique presence is long overdue, and these tracks help pave the way for that happy possibility.

5 out of 5 stars Goodness had nothin' to do with it.......2006-08-24

Goodness sure had nothin' to do with Miss West's style of delivery when she sang. But, she is so wonderful!
To the fans who think you already have everything she ever recorded - you're wrong! This CD set includes "Imaginary Love" and the single of "My Old Flame" that she recorded separately from the movie version. It's great to hear the song all the way through. This version has previously only been on the Brunswick 78 RPM record. Rare piece of memorabilia.
It's worth it just for these alone.
Of course, there are errors in the liner notes concerning her career- there always are, for some reason.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly junk food with some surprises..........2007-04-20

I pride myself on having a rather pretentious collection of music (Classical, Jazz, Folk, World Music ect.); but sometimes it is good to sneak in a little candy or "junk food". A CD like this is one of my guilty pleasures. After all, You can't be pretentious all of the time.

P.S. The Bob Dylan covers are actually quite good, such as Sebastion Cabot's dramatic readings of Bob Dylan as "poetry"; Eddie Albert's rockin' version of "Blowin' in the Wind"; and William Shatner's intense and psychodelic rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man".

2 out of 5 stars My ears are bleeding.......2006-11-02

All but one of the celebrities on this album should be ashamed of themselves...Not only can they NOT sing, but laws ought to be passed so that something like this can NEVER be perpetrated upon the listening public again...Sebastian Cabot is perhaps the worst offender(and the least remembered)of the celebrities who appear on this album...At the time Cabot,a small, rotund englishman, was playing a jeeves-like butler on an american sitcom along with actor Brian Keith(who does NOT sing on any album that I am aware of)and two snotty kids..Cabot's renditions of two early Bob Dylan tunes are enough to cause glass to shatter(in protest, and not because Cabot's voice has the strength of ,say,Ella Fitzgerald)...Jack Webb's first wife,Julie London COULD sing(and very well,too)..Maybe her vocal success made the great stoneface jealous...or maybe he just got tired of being known for his"just-the-facts-mam" monotone on"Dragnet"..in any event, his rendering of"Try a little tenderness"proves the old saw that every INTELLIGENT person knows and resprects his/her limitations..Joel Grey can sing, well, sort of...He was the star of the original"cabaret",both on broadway and in the movie version...But sounding like a gremlin with a hollywoodesque nazi-accent for his role in"Cabaret"is not the same as doing"White Room"...I mean,in"Cabaret"we all knew that Grey's charecter, and his vocals, weren't to be taken seriously....Mae West had one foot in the grave and the other on a bannana peel when she inflicted her version of"Twist & Shout"on the listening public..She had also recently completed filming her worst film appearance ever in"Myra Breckinridge")..taken together West's final choices do much to sink the star-status impression which was hers in the 1920s and 1930s...Andy Griffith,Mayberry's amiable policeman, can navigate his way through old time hymns,as evidenced by his numerous gospel efforts, but singing pop is quite beyond his ability..singing"House of the rising sun"is something akin to scooby doo attempting"Ave Maria"...Shatner and Nimoy of "Star Trek"fame also appear on this disc, but any discussion of thier utter lack of vocal ability would require page after page(and numerous expletive deleted references)and is perhaps better attempted elsewhere...Finally we have Eddie Albert,WW2 war hero, actor, writer,Star of"Green Acres" and,YES,a decent vocalist ,who at one time did sing with the 1940s big bands...Alas,Eddie's talents are better suited to such ballads as "jenny Kissed Me"(one of his 1950s hit singles)than to doing"Blowing in the wind"..As a goof, this album is sort of funny the first time that it is heard, but like a topical joke it becomes very stale thereafter

5 out of 5 stars Warning!.......2006-08-23

Do not drive or operate heavy machinery when listening to this disc. You'll laugh your head off. One of the funniest CD's of all time.

5 out of 5 stars DAMN IT JIM, I'M A DOCTOR, NOT A SINGER!!.......2005-10-28

William Shatner instantly qualified as the Karaoke Kitsch King of the Universe when this kooky collection of actors turned would be rock stars hit the market many years ago. Leave it to retread masters Rhino Records to round up surreal soundbites from over a dozen Hollywood vanity projects ("I act, but what I'd REALLY like to do is sing!") circa that mighty anything goes decade, the sixties. Captain Quirk's hilarious (and...SURPRISE!...wooden) neo-psyhedelic recitation of MR. TAMBOURINE MAN and LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS is very nearly matched in its "so-godawful-it's-terrific"-ness by Leonard "Don't call me Schlock!" Nimoy's renditions of PROUD MARY and IF I HAD A HAMMER, done in a true Vulcan's emotionless style. Just try to picture Mae West belting out TWIST AND SHOUT, or Eddie Albert tackling BLOWIN' IN THE WIND---naw, forget it---some things have to be heard to be believed. On the other hand, Mayberry icons who actually had singing on their resumes, Andy Griffith and Jim Nabors, acquit themselves reasonably well here, and Sebastion "Mr. French" Cabot narrates a pair of Dylan evergreens in his rich, embracing tones. And Jack Webb, bless him, is Joe Friday, no matter how you present him, so TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS is the most soulless Oitis Redding cover ever executed, making it an album highlight. GOLDEN THROATS is as much of a mind-blower as running across the odd Telly Savalas LP in your local thrift store bargain bin. RATING: FIVE YOKO ONOS

5 out of 5 stars If there is a hell, I'm pretty sure this is the soundtrack........2004-12-23

Never before have so many done so much to prove that crossing over from actor to singer is not something that should happen on a regular basis. Heck, even Keanu Reeves - not exactly the brightest bulb - chose to stand back and play bass for his band, Dogstar, singing backup vocals only.

As far as entertainment purposes, this album is best used to get a reaction out of people. Normally, this reaction will be questions ranging from "What the hell is this?" to "What kind of drugs are you taking, and where can I get some?". However, that was the reason this compilation was created, obviously, because there is nothing to offer in the realm of serious musicianship. And since it was designed to make people wonder what's wrong with their stereos, I rated it with five stars because it performs that function with such efficiency.

But let's get to the point, shall we? This album is bad. The singing is bad, the overall performances are bad, and the choice of songs for the actors is, in my opinion, heavily influenced by hashish and various other pharmaceutical entertainment enhancers. I mean, Jack Webb "singing" a song called "Try A Little Tenderness"? I have no doubt that someone, somewhere, sat with his co-workers at a big table covered with a huge mound of the purest Colombian White Lady, and, after taking in a HUGE dram of Peruvian flake, said something like, "Hey...What if we got, like, William Shatner...Don't laugh, dude! You'll make me lose my train of thought...Where was I? Oh, yeah! Shatner. What if we got Shatner to cover a Beatles tune? People'd buy that, right? Right? You guys wanna order a pizza? Pizza, anyone? Wait! I've got it! I don't know why, but I suddenly realized why Cheech and Chong are so funny! Ooh! And what about Mister French? You gonna eat that donut? Man, I'm hungry..." You get the idea.

The only thing I can think of that would be more horrific is a sequel to this painful collection of tunes, and such a creature does exist.

Good lord, this was a bad CD.

I think I need a hug...
