Jewel's debut album, Pieces of You, reveals a special voice--strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses. The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded world. For the most part, Jewel sings to her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, but she has a lot more in common with, say, the Indigo Girls or Lisa Loeb than with Judy Collins or Nanci Griffith. Despite her soft soprano and pretty melodies, her songs have an iconoclastic edge which make her more of an unplugged alternative rocker than a folkie. Her songs too often betray their origins as written verse in their hard-to-sing meters, unmusical phrasing, and diary-like pronouncements. Nonetheless, a few numbers, such as "Morning Song" and "You Were Meant for Me," show a spark of humor about romance, and hint that Jewel may yet write songs worthy of her remarkable voice. --Geoffrey Himes

The only track I sometimes skip over is Adrian but the others make up for it.
Suits me just Fine.......2007-03-28
It may be hackneyed, as the formally educated Mr. Geoffrey Himes infers, but unadulterated emotions coming from an innocence void of "Sophisticated Structure" can be as or more effective in touching a commonality we've all felt but failed to express and left buried deep within, far below the surface where they can not do the most good. Music, poetry, art of any kind is about emotional expression (bringing it out in the open; to uncover, liberate, enjoy, and heal) - if one puts a formula to it, a certain spontaneity is lost. Who cares if it fits into an exact genre. "Listen" to the "Magic" of the content, free yourself to the "Moment", of what it is, not what it isn't. Her "Unmusical Phrasing" coerces one to disallow conventional patterns of thought; break out of vernacular entrapment, exonerate that iconoclast spirit we all harbor in secret, but fear wearing less judgment befalls with a vengeance. If you're dissatisfied, write your own. Mr. Himes critique is more hackneyed then Jewell's lyrics. There are computer programs that can "Formula Critique" what he wrote. Try to touch others with pure emotion as she does; it's not as easy as it looks. There's no subject under the sun that hasn't been written about in some way. It's "Variation" of interpretation that provides a new way at looking at archaic "Oracular Obsolescence", and that interpretation is personal and unique. What Jewell does is a total package. Remove one aspect and the flavor changes, the impulsive magic is lost. Listen to the innocence of a child if you crave a method to our madness. They can tell you ALL you need to know, never having attended your institutions of higher learning, jaded with intellectual "Vocabulary"...
Maybe that garbage can Jewell was rummaging through for a discarded Pizza crust was in your back yard? Trade places with her. Discover the disparate emotions you'll experience when your lofty level of intellectual needs is replaced with a primary survival skill. You'll discover a level of learning you had no idea could exist. Jewell was right. You hit bottom at the top. Maybe it's a question of perspective? She possesses an uncanny ability of "Phrase". It's a gift. You can't acquire it. Like charisma, You either have it or you don't.
Jewell's mortar flows with a melded elixir fit for a child's delighted squeal seeing a frog jump into a pond, disappearing below the surface; a wanderer seeking the comfort of falling asleep to the melodic snore of a road dusty hobo; enigmatic curiosity of finding her place in the intricate balance of desire and need; tempered with a pestle of discovery that only a misstep now and again, will allude clarification.
If I had Jewell's talent... I'd gladly shoulder the critics lack of the same. But like they, all I can do is listen, wish, and lament...
a revelation.......2007-02-10
Jewel's debut album struck a chord for the sheer non-ordinary quality of her voice. Even if the lyrics sometimes seem a bit overwrought and over-wise, the sound is convincing, especially when taken from a young artist just making her breakout.
I can still remember where I was when I first hear 'Foolish Games' (Hwy 101 northbound between Santa Rosa and San Francisco). It still rates as one of Jewel's finest ballads. I bought the CD that very day.
This was a voice that arguably sprang straight from the small club to the recording studio, with the lingering aroma of its former venue still clinging to it. The spare orchestration lends itself to this conclusion as does the occasional live recording in the CD. Jewel has since grown beyond this, a good thing on balance but not without its residual regrets.
Jewel has gone on to bigger things. It is difficult to include that they've been better than this debut, which in its moment was a revelation.

Got Satie?.......2005-07-27
The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.
Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.
Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

This disc is obviously aimed at the world-music audience, if one judges from its title and the subtitle, "Folk-Inspired Music for Guitar." But that shouldn't dissuade listeners interested in more serious music. Isbin has collected original pieces and arrangements from Spain, Latin America, Appalachia, Ireland, Israel, and Greece--all of them quite lovely. It's really amazing to hear, for example, the "Londonderry Air," better known as "Danny Boy," in such a sympathetic arrangement by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. She plays with such technical mastery that you wind up taking it for granted, while appreciating her songful delivery of this highly varied program of music, which was mostly first intended for the human voice. The uncommonly attractive booklet, including photos of Isbin as a world traveler, is another asset to this fine program, as is Teldec's realistic recorded sound. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
"Dreams of a World": A Dialogue..........2005-03-28
Cancion y danza for guitar, Agua E Vinho Mahar and Yerushala'im shel zahav are pieces which can easily be overly sentimental and languorous. Ms. Isbin keeps a pleasant balance between the melancholy in her phrasing, the underlying dynamism of her voice
and the warm character of the pieces. I can only recommend Dreams of a World to anyone in search of high quality music played by an artist, not merely a technician.
Dreams with raw emotions. .......2005-01-24
I highly recommend Dreams of a World.
Still a dream ..........2004-12-26
First, let me say, I hope that they are good friends, because they are both landmark musicians and worthy "competitors." Both clearly play with absolute love for both the music and the instrument. In short, I prefer Isbin's recording of the Pipo "Danza," even though, overall, Russell's playing is technically cleaner and more facile (but not by much). (Across his entire CD, I recall barely any string noise from Russell, where as Isbin manages a mere dozen or so clear such imperfections across her entire and ample CD; big deal).
I think the thing that draws me to Isbin in this piece (and her CD, in general) is her incredible variety of rhythm, attack, and tone color, all of which combine to give an impression of near perfect balance between spontaneity and precision. She has a way of taking time without the slightest sense of delay or heaviness. This is probably because her tempo never changes, only the rhythm around it, which is a classic hallmark of rhythmic mastery. This means that she hears and feels, both deeply and objectively, every moment of "sound and space" (notes and rest) from beginning to end, like an unbroken line painted across a master's canvas. Combined with this, she uses the space between her bridge and finger board to elicit the most amazing contrasts in tone color (one of the great contributions of Segovia to the art).
Russell plays with equal mastery of rhythm and attack, perhaps aided by the remarkable sonic depth built into his guitar. While he makes maximum use of that wonderful guitar sound, he is somewhat less dramatic in his changes of volume and tone color between phrases, aiming for a more consistent and lyrical quality, certainly another aim of mastery in itself, but there in lies the difference. Still, his sharp shaping of phrases, especially in his choice of Spanish music on his entire CD, with that impeccable technique behind it, weaves a spell all its own.
So, even though Russell's is among the finest pure Spanish musical CDs available, and one of my favorite in that genre (musical realm), I still have to give my nod to Isbin's multi-national effort for its unmatched ability to conjure, especially today, the most sublime dreams of a better world.
An Elegant Journey Around The World.......2004-07-09
Simply Superb.......2004-07-07
Dreams of a World is the type of CD you come back to over and over again. Each listening reveals a new layer of complexity and mastery. To master an instrument requires a unique blend of disciplined technique and creative emotion. One may aspire to being a perfect technician and yet lack in emotive nuance. One may aspire to evoke emotion and yet lack proper technique. In either case the listener is left wanting. Isbin however, inspires by combining flawless technique with passionate creativity. For example, the works by Neomi Shemer shimmer. Isbin's technique, her emotion, and her versatility shine forth on this CD. This is a beautiful work, and should be in every music lovers collection.

Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19
The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."
When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.
Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31
Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?
Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?
Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14
How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29
Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.
The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.
The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.
But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.
We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.
I, for one, feel privileged.
Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

"cuts you just like that" .......2005-07-14
The album opens with the fast and furious "Council of the Caldron." "Psychopath" rocks! It is also a dark and mysterious song with iniquitous whispers of "I want to play" and intense guitar riffs. The chorus kicks! "Save Me" is a more accessible track. It offers slow verses with a chorus that is, musically, very upbeat despite the lyrics "I'm dying here with you." On this track, the woman isn't the helpless victim like on most Lizzy songs but, through wrong choices, is bringing her man down (the lyrics do not get too involved in any story-telling). "Red Rum" seems to be about Jack the Ripper from the lyrics "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," and "spirits ripping out my mind." I'm not sure to what the line "in two thirty seven" refers but 2:37 am is around the time that Mary Kelly (Jack the Ripper's last known and most cut-up victim) was killed. Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there, but the song rocks, especially during the chants of "Red Rum." "Love You to Pieces" is a slow, power ballad on the level of "Children of the Damned" by Iron Maiden. It is highlighted when Lizzy songs the verse "and all along you knew the reasons why I love you to pieces." The title of the track is only used once and just in that verse. I love that part.
"American Metal" is awesome! It has killer guitar riffs and ends with Lizzy's amazing high-pitched screams. The blood-pumping chants! The adrenaline rush! I can't get enough of this track! The next track is also incredible. "Flesheater" has this killer bass riff at the chorus that is so addictive, I think I played this track ten times in a row when I first heard it. It overpowers the shock value of the lyrics "She wants it deep, deep, deep, deep, deeper" and "I love to eat, eat, eat, eat, eat her." "Warfare" is a straight-forward metal track. "Godiva" is another blazing, blood-pumping track. "Rod of Iron" starts out like a slow power ballad broken up by Lizzy's lashing out vocals. Then it becomes a rocker. Appropriately, "Rod of Iron" reminds me the most of Iron Maiden, especially at the guitar solo.
Any fan of 1980s metal needs some Lizzy albums in their music library. Love You to Pieces is one of their best (their best being Visual Lies). I think, next to Lies, it is their most solid album, but I like most of their releases including Menace to Society released the following year and Master of Disguise in 1989 which, if it were not for one or two tracks I do not like, I would proclaim as their masterpiece.
Lungs of Iron.......2003-07-07
Lizzy Borden is one of the greatest Rock Singers in the genre, yet is not heard by many.
LYtoP may be his strongest vocal performance. The title track, "love you to pieces" has out of sight vocals. "Rod of Iron", more of the same. This guy has Iron Lungs!
I would like to see this singer collaborate with some prog. rock musicians for some more heavy, art rock. A project with stronger compositions to let this guy feature full range and tricks.
Lizzy Borden does not sound like Bruce Dickinson, but I would love to hear Iron Maiden with this guys voice..
Amazing!!!.......2003-01-30
From all the 80's glam metal bands, this is one of the most agressive and heavy, not only in their shows and looks, but the most important:the music.probably that's why they didn't have the attention they deserved...specially from media.
I love all songs..maybe "American metal" is the one i like less, but it's still a great song , speacially live.
Before this album i had "Visual lies" and honestly didn't like very much except for "Me against the world";but this first album is much more agressive, with some of the most killer riffs i've ever heard and Lizzy's Amazing voice.
Buy it, steal it, sell your grandma in a pawn shop; if you're a W.A.S.P. or early Motley Crue's fan get your hands on this album!
Very underrated band.......2002-12-10
The version of this disc that I own contains four extra songs, Give Em' The Axe, Kiss Of Death, No Time To Lose, and Long Live Rock N Roll, that easily push the rating up to five stars
One Of The '80's Best!.......2000-11-12
Also, "The Murderess Metal Roadshow" is a must have to go along with this album. It has the entire album live, as well as a few other goodies. If you can find it, check out the accompanying video. It shows what Lizzie is all about.
