Pleasant surprise.......2001-05-10

To most of us the Sutherland/Pavarotti Fille du Regiment is the recording to have, and of course it is. But this live 1995 recording is certainly worth hearing (and having). First of all, it is stylishly and idiomatically conducted by Marcello Panni, a name new to me who should record more often. Edita Gruberova has a lot of fun in the title role and still sounds fresh and accurate. Deon van der Walt as Tonio sings all those 9 high C's with ease, even though his basic voice is nothing like young Luciano's. But it is not necessary to compare both recordings. This Nightingale offering is excellent and should be heard.
