After the heavily produced Films for Radio and the sprawling double CD Ohio, Over the Rhine retrenches for this stunning follow-up. Recorded in the living room of the duo's home, the low-key glow that results brings the music even closer to its source. Bits of folk, jazz, pop, and country intermingle as the singing and songwriting husband-and-wife partnership of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler let the sparkling, yet subtle melodies of these ten originals--plus a lovely cover of "My Funny Valentine"--dictate the sparse instrumentation and languid but never haphazard tempos.

This is music of delicate beauty, tinged with regret, sadness, and hope, yet devoid of pretense. It sounds like these songs fell out of the sky, drifting through the clouds and arriving with help from Bergquist's exquisite voice. Her double-tracked vocals dart through tinkling piano lines on "Born," making the already exquisite song shimmer. Stand-up bass and occasional cello and sax along with a dash of percussion bolster these chamber-styled ballads that float like lilies on a pond. But there's a flickering intensity to like "Firefly," in which Bergquist repeats "My memory will not fail me now," that adds an edgy tautness to this emotionally stirring album. --Hal Horowitz

This album, along with the 2-CD Ohio and their most recent album, Discount Fireworks, are 3 of the most-played albums in my cd player at the moment. The songs "Born" and "Spark" get lots of play on my ipod. Enjoy.

Intoxicated by Drunkard's Prayer.......2007-04-13

Drunkard's Prayer is an intimate and beautiful masterpiece by Over The Rhine. Berquist has a warm and stunning voice. Lyrically this albums depth, introspection and familiarity draws you in. OTR gives to nods to Joni Mitchell on this album with Bluer (a nod to her album Blue) followed by Spark (a nod to her album Court and Spark). They follow in the tradition of excellent singer/songwriters. The deserve their place in Paste's magazine top 50 lyricists. Buy this album and pick up Ohio too!

another fantastic over the rhine cd........2007-02-24

what a great recording over the rhine has made here. karin bergquist's vocals are hypnotic on these eleven outstanding songs. mostly a quiet and reflective album with piano and acoustic guitar the dominating instruments behind the singer, i can't say enough about the gorgeous quality of this music. a perfect evening cd, or lazy sunday afternoon listen. my highest recommendations.

I loved this album for a relaxed, deep look at relationships that is not shown much in day-to-day. I loved the music and especially loved how OTR described their marriage and the album cover like a race horse that you have everything riding on.

Searching for meaning?.......2006-09-18

A captivating album. Over the Rhine's creamy vocalist, Karin, offers us a glimpse into the reality of intimacy. The lyrics are poignant, rich and deep. The music flows out of a place of experience. This album has a permenant place in my cd player. I listen to it all the time. It's stirred and inspired me. Definitely a good buy.
