John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Boy.......2007-07-30

Fantastic cause brings together fine performers who bring to life the intensity and focus of one of our greatest singer/songwriters ever. His insight into the world is amazing. The only negative thing one can say about this album is that it reminds us of the fact that no one can sing his songs the way he did. He was a treasure who a younger generation should be exposed to more often.

3 out of 5 stars John Lennon.......2007-07-29

As a huge Lennon/Beatles fan, I like that today's artists appreciate the genius and talent of Lennon for a good cause. And despite the talents of these artists (with nods to Avril for a great version of Mother, Green Day's excellent rendition of Working Class Hero and a good rendition by REM of #9 Cloud), most of the other cuts make me want to yank out the CD and just go straight for my CDs with Lennon's original work. I didn't care for U2's tempo changes and I didn't care for Watching the Wheels at all, I saw Matchbox 20 cover the song in concert years ago and would have much preferred their excellent version here. I also would have preferred some of the artists not doubling up on some of the songs (Gimme Some Truth), when Jealous Guy and Woman were certainly worth a shot. While I can only hope the CD will open the eyes and ears of today's generation to explore the original music of Lennon (and the Beatles) and become fans of their near-50 year old (gasp!) reign as the greatest Rock and Roll musicians of all time, I find the CD just makes me miss John all that much more and wish he was around to have given us another 25-30+ more years of his genius. Lennon's music and lyrics are so personal, it just pales when done by other artists. I support any humantarian cause and appreciate Lennon's music and message being utilized here, but I think I would have just preferred Yoko turning over the entire wealth of his estate to such humantarian efforts than hear anyone else cover his music.

4 out of 5 stars Lennon fans, fear not.......2007-07-27

Any member of Amnesty International has known for quite some time about this album, and as a Lennon fan, I bought it upon release. It concerned me to see names like Christina Aguilera, Matisyahu and Avril Lavigne as artists covering Lennon songs, but those turned out to be some of the most original and enjoyable interpretations on the album. I expected more creative versions from U2 and R.E.M., but their covers were simply recreations of the originals (not that there's anything wrong with that). Highlights: "Cold Turkey" completely turned out by Lenny Kravitz, "Gimme Me Some Truth" which introduced me to Jaguares and "God" beautifully resurrected by Jack's Mannequin and Mick Fleetwood.

4 out of 5 stars Pure pleasure for Cause.......2007-07-27

I bought this for a lot of reasons.....that is why everyone that enjoys various styles should have this in the collection.....To save Darfur is reason enough, but I am sure everyone would find an artist they enjoy on this album.

We used this as background music for an outdoor picnic -- it created the perfect vibe for the day.

4 out of 5 stars Spare, unearthly recreations of medieval tunes and lyrics.......2006-10-01

The Mediaeval Baebes, a group of twelve female vocalists led by Katherine Blake, croon and sigh their way through a variety of Latin, Middle English and medieval French songs in a manner all their own. Usually in unison, and often unaccompanied, the straightforward sound of their voices is simple yet striking. All of the music of "Salva Nos" has a fairy tale quality about it, whether that be in the form of innocent lilts graced by dulcimer and recorders, or primal chants belted out heartily to the deep beat of hand drums. Another world, another time, another aesthetic--this is music that calms and transports you. It may not be entirely authentic in its presentation, but its spirit shines through. "Salva Nos" is by far the most laid back of the Mediaeval Baebes' releases--they keep getting livelier after this one, with more drums, more attitude, and eventually some electronica. But this is where it all started. The Baebes' roster for this recording is: Nicole Frobusch, Carmen Schneider, Katharine Blake, Nichole Sleet, Karen Lupton, Teresa Casella, Marie Findley, Audrey Evans, Clare Ravel, Ruth Galloway, Rachel Van Asch and Cylindra Sapphire, with instrumentalist Dorothy Carter on hurdy gurdy and dulcimer. The next of the Mediaeval Baebes' albums is "Worldes Bliss." Try also the work of the German neo-Medieval group Estampie and the duo Dead Can Dance. And if you'd like to hear early English music performed by authentic period ensembles, here are some suggestions: "Miri It Is" by The Dufay Collective, "English Songs of the Middle Ages" by Sequentia, "An English Ladymass," "On Yoolis Night," "Legends of Nicholas," and "Wolcum Yule" by Anonymous 4, and "A Waverly Consort Christmas."

4 out of 5 stars Stop bad-mouthing the Baebes!!!!.......2001-03-05

While I do agree that Mediaeval Baebes' Salva Nos is not myfavorite of their trio of Album I still have to say that it is a .. good CD and well worth the price! These girls have guts that not very many other artists I know have. They are not afraid to try new things as anyone with ears can hear if they listen to all three albums. They are, simply put, talented.

3 out of 5 stars An acquired taste.......2000-06-28

I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this as their first Mediaeval Baebes CD. It's nowhere near as accessible as, say, Undrentide. The majority of tracks are religious (Christian, that is) in content, from Christmas carols ("Coventry Carol" or an ethereal version of "Veni, Veni" - better known as "Oh come, oh come, Immanuel") to funeral dirges ("This Ay Nicht", also known as the "Lyke Wake Dirge") and frankly the album doesn't display the range or sheer pagan fun of their later offerings. I wouldn't describe "Salva Nos" as "risible" but certainly would suggest listening to some of the Baebes' later recordings rather than Salva Nos before making a decision on whether to buy any more of their material. Some of the tracks on this album are definitely an acquired taste. Once you've acquired the taste, you'll want to hear them again, though!

1 out of 5 stars 0 Stars really , but they wouldn't let me. Save your money........2000-04-13

The Mediaeval Babes is the confection of some bright spark who thought that the girlie-group formula could be joined with the music of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to... well, to make a lot of money. I suspect that they failed: they certainly deserved to.

The Babes themselves are a washed-out bunch of hopeless wanabees. Some can sing a little, none does anything well. Their music is a crude blend, tasteless, talentless pastiches of mediaeval standards alternating with phoney pretend stuff.

I can't go on - The Mediaeval Babes and their CDs are truly awful. At 33c it's a rip-off, and the quoted $33.99 is criminal. Go away and get the real thing - The Spice Girls or Hildegard of Bingen, not a cheap and risible imitation of both.

Album Description

2006 album from American pop group Cock Robin, their first new studio album in over 16 years. The two original members, Anna Lacazio and Peter Kingsbery have reformed and composed 13 new and unreleased tracks, the first single being ''I Don't Want To Save The World''. Formerly signed by Columbia in 1985, Cock Robin was revealed to the public thanks to two hits - ''When Your Heart Is Weak'' & ''The Promise You Made''. After their break-up, Kingsbery has recorded solo material, but nothing has been as successful as his time in this band alongside Anna.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't be the biggest fool.......2007-04-03

Cock Robin's debut album was raw and edgy. "After Here Through Midland" was smooth and polished. "First Love, Last Rites" was powerful and bitter. "I Don't Want to Save the World" is dull, listless and boring. Kingsbery's conscience must be troubled, for these songs are off in the wrong direction. With the exception of the title track and Bo, he subjects us to a string of love songs endlessly disecting his fifty-plus year old love life. No good bass lines and really bad poetry. None of the new tracks would have made the cut in the past.

If you want a good, late career album, try Dan Fogelberg's Full Circle or Level 42's Retroglide. They are still true to the music.

5 out of 5 stars There is a god!!!.......2007-03-03

I always thought that I was the sole fan left of CR. I could not get through a day of high school without listening to their debut album (yeah, I am pushing 40 now). I recall sneaking out of the house late at night so that I could drive to LA and see them. Those were the days! I love Peter's solo stuff, but it just never seemed to have the finesse of the CR stuff. This album is going to be my highlight of 2007!

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece! They even have Cock Robin videos on iTunes!.......2007-02-03

Wow it seems like the 80's all over again! Firstly a few nights ago I was browsing iTunes looking for a few new videos to put on my ipod video and noticed Cock Robin's name. Okay so I thought..AMAZING I can finally own the video for "When Your Heart is Weak", then to my amazement there were 6 different songs that they had made videos for! I of course downloaded them all!! Then this spurred me to do some research about what Peter had been up to lately and I discover at his myspace that there was a NEW Cock Robin cd out!!!! I immediately purchased it from Amazon and have not stopped playing it since! It is catchy, contemporary but also maintains that retro Cock Robin sound that Peter and Ana are so well known for. I can only PRAY that they one day play a club in New York City, it's been a dream of mine since 1986 to hear their songs onstage!

5 out of 5 stars Happy Days Are Here Again!!!.......2007-01-28

I absolutely LOVE this album!!! I was a HUGE Cock Robin fan in the 80's--and followed Peter Kingsbery's career after the band broke up. (I tried to follow Anna LaCozio's, but she kind of dropped out of sight.) Quite by accident, I stumpled across this album on the internet, and first down loaded it from I Tunes, but of course I had to get the CD as well. Peter Kingsbery and Aimee Mann were the best singer-songwriters and led the best bands in the 80's. Unfortuntely, Kingsbery never seemed to get the marketing push his talent deserves. All that is a long way of saying I NEVER thought I would hear Peter Kingsbery and Anna Lacozio singing together again. What a pleasant surprise this album was! Like the older Cock Robin albums and Kingsbery's solo work, this album is loaded with catchy hooks, inventive arrangements and production, stellar musicianship, and spectacular vocals. Like Buckingham and Nicks, Kingsbery and LaCozio are MEANT to sing together! Their voice blend so well--and when they really let loose, like they do at the end of "Superhuman," the only thing left to do is light a cigarette!!! We had to wait 17 years for this record, but it was worth the wait!!! If you love catchy, inventive pop music, you'll love this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Words can't describe how GREAT this album is!!.......2006-12-18

I have been a HUGE Cock Robin fan ever since 1985. When I heard that they were getting back together and recording a new disc, it was a dream come true for me. Better yet, I had the chance to see them perform and meet them at a show in California in May of 2006! If you are fan of real heartfelt lyrics, fantastic voices and expert musicianship and arrangments, then this disc is for you. I wish I could rate this higher than 5 stars. This disc, or any Cock Robin or Peter Kingsbery disc for that matter, I could listen to over and over and over again and still be inspired with each listen!!

4 out of 5 stars Rapid-fire and snooty punk at its best.......2004-08-16

It all started when a friend of mine asked me to download "Just Rock and Roll". Back then I had a terrible dial-up connection, so the song had to be damned worth the twenty minutes I would take in downloading it. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't amazed either. It sounded like another punk-rock song from another bunch of angry snooty kids.

And then, on June 2nd, 2002, I went to the Düsseldorf performance of the Deconstruction Tour, where bands like Lagwagon, Lostprophets and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones rocked a crowd of a thousand screaming Germans. Midtown was the third performer after Flogging Molly and the Turbo AC's (for the full concert review, click here). This concert motivated me into buying Save the World, Lose the Girl, the band's major-label debut.

With a sound comparable to New Found Glory, these guys foment power through their punk-driven speed, but stay close to the themes and issues beneath. But more importantly, however, is the way in which the songs are crafted. In many of the songs, the band steers away from the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure that seems to plague the punk-rock scene. Instead, the variation of rhythms provides for very original material. Songs like "Direction" and "Such a Person" are almost a progressive representation of a punk song, with the song changing direction at every turn.

Similar to Guster and Nine Days, Midtown does not limit itself to one vocalist. Singer/bassist Gabe Saporta has that focused and unbreakable voice that screams high-school jock while the band's singer/guitarist has the sensitive voice for softer pieces like "No Place Feels Like Home" (which is more of a pop song than a punk song). Honestly, I'm not even sure that they are different people. For all I know, it's just Saporta changing his intonation, which honestly, would be even more impressive.

But yes, Midtown equals punk rock plus talented musicians. There's no doubting this. They're definitely up there amongst my favorite bands in the genre. So if bands like Saves the Day and New Found Glory pull your strings, then picking this album up is a definite affirmative.

Recommendations: "Just Rock and Roll", "Direction", "No Place Feels Like Home", "Such a Person", "Knew it All Along"

5 out of 5 stars Don't Touch the Leather.......2004-04-26

It's unfortunate that my review can only be written in words and you can't see the David Lee Roth-esq jump kicks that I'm busting out like I do every time I think about, never mind listen to, this album. As much as I love Living Well is the Best Revenge (which is the best album in the world), it's always nice to go back to a great band's beginnings and listen to where they've come from. I compare the experience to throwing in Led Zepplin's first album. Raw unabashed musical genius - unforgettable the way's great bands' first albums should be.

5 out of 5 stars Midtown, They raise the notch on punk bands!.......2003-11-13

Midtown is overall a great band and this cd exhibits those qualities that raise the standards of what a punk band should be.

The vocals are some of the most harmonized and soothing, yet edgy and "in your face." I'm not trying to tell you that the vocals can't satisfy punk band standards because that is far from the truth. They can dig out the screams and yells or whatever you want.

The guitar parts are simple yet simple in their complexity. These rythms are very catchy and the band stays together almost exactly

I give this band 5 Stars and the cd 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the followup.......2003-08-24

STWLTG is, by no stretch an essential album. It is however, a quality album. There are several classic moments (the guitar break in "Come On" is exhibit "A" for anyone wishing to argue that pop punk isn't a bastard genre), but there are many more instances of leaning on stock rhymes and predictable hooks. There is, however, a great energy in this disc. Not like At The Drive In had, but something that comes from whatever whiny, sincere suburban Tao propels this group. However, be warned emo fans, the emotion on this disc is under a fairly heavy coat of radio gloss (particularly for a first album on an indie label). The vocals could be mistaken for almost any other band on Drive-Thru. And the instrumentals sound like you've heard them on a half-dozen other discs, with the exception of a few amazing breaks.
In the end, this is great choice for those of you who love catchy punk with vocals that sound like a massively snottier Jermey Engik (from SDRE). For the rest of you get "Something to Write Home About" first. The songwriting is better and the energy is more raw. As far as "Living Well..." skip it unless you really connect with it in some way or are trying to impress someone recovering from their nu-metal phase.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It.......2003-04-20

this album is so sweet, i would simply recomend it so you could hear the balls to the wall hidden track at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Some excellent tracks........2000-08-12

With twenty-nine national anthems and John Williams' "Olympic Theme", this album offers a reasonable variety of anthems. (Curiously, there is nothing from the USSR/CIS/Russia!) The recording quality is excellent. The interpretation of the anthems seems to attempt to give an 'appropriate' national flavour to each one. This does not always seem to work. For example, China's "Ch'i Lai!" sounds more like incidental music than a national anthem. There is an interesting rendition of France's "La Marseillaise". While it lacks the 'big' sound usually associated with this anthem, it is distinctive - and is probably a quite good representation of how it might have sounded back in 1792. If, however, you prefer the 'big' sound this version will be a disappointment. Argentina's "Sean eternos los laurales", Canada's "O! Canada" and John Williams' "Olympic Theme" are excellent, but Belgium's "La Brabanconne/Het Belgisch Volkslied" is disappointing and dirge-like. The anthems are performed by a chamber orchestra and consequently have neither the 'big' sound of a full orchestra, nor the martial sound of a military band. The album takes a distinctive approach to the anthems. Whether this approach works is ultimately a matter of personal taste. If you enjoy the more intimate sound of a chamber orchestra, this album will probably be to your taste.

This is one of the first albums that got me turned on to them. Tony Mcphee is an awsome guitarist and an even better song writer. His version of Amazing Grace, Still gives me chills.Lots of guitar effects and I think this is the best line up of the band members. Great power trio. It is still alive and fresh today as it was when it first came out.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2005-03-21

Wow! I can't believe that nobody has reviewed this album yet. Here goes,
Enzo Avitabile is from south-italy (from Naples to be precise) and is a known figure in world music, more for jazz fusion. In the past he also contributed with James Brown and Tina Turner.
This time he is going deep into his roots, "Bottari", its traditional rhythm from south Italy that is now limited to few places only. It involves the (wine) barrels, wooden drums, etc.
Taking the Bottari culture, Enzo experimented with Jazz (sax, trumpets, etc) and created an amazing piece of music. Highly Energetic.
This CD truly defines the sound of world music and cross culture experiments. I saw them live in Dublin, St Patrick's Festival, and am truly stunned by the performance.
Its a must for the fan of world music fans, get it, you won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Salva Nos.......2003-08-17

I was just at my favorite record store when I came across "Salvo Nos" in the used bins today. Being a big Mediaeval Baebes fan, I had to buy it. Besides it was the only cd by the group that I found in the bins that I didn't have. As always, I was not disappointed with "Salva Nos". I have yet to be disappointed with a MB cd. I noticed on "Salva Nos" that the minimal use of instruments. Very little percussion was used but otherwise the primary focus was on the women's beautiful voices.Judging by the lyrics on this album, the songs pretty much celebrates the birth of Christ. After a few seconds into the song "Veni Veni", I realized that this was the same Christmas carol I am used to singing otherwise known as "Emmanuel". There was not one song on "Salvo Nos" that I didn't like but then again I have yet to hear one song by the Mediaevel Baebes that I didn't like. I look forward to hearing more from this lovely group of women.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun to listen to, worth having.......2002-12-19

My first Mediaeval Baebes album was Undrentide, it had a lot of good stuff in it but mixed in some synthesizer sounds, this one is much better. Salva Nos is the Baebes first work and it is a very good album with no modern sounding instrumentation in it at all. Of the 16 tracks only 7 have ANY musical accompaniment, in many of those it is subtly done.
I can't say which is my favorite tune but everything has a medieval sound and feel to it, I love the way they got such a good harmony and sound going just with their voices. Singing in 13th to 15th century English or Latin, mostly (lyrics provided in both the original and modern tongue), these women clearly don't need musical instruments.
Buy this album for the good music, enjoy it for the lack of intrusive modern sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy listening to these Baebes, but don't cross 'em.......2001-11-28

    Sweetly blending voices.
Mix of haunting, sprightly, wickedly funny, old favorites (Gaudete, Veni veni, Coventry Carol) and unfamiliar delights (Adam Lay Ibounden, Now Springs the Spray).

Settings more traditional than Steeleye Span, richer texture than Christmas in Anglia.

Enjoy listening to these Baebes, but don't cross 'em,
This Ay Nicht sounds like a curse with real sticking power.

    4 out of 5 stars medievil magic.......2001-05-06

Highly enjoyable! when you finish work, come home a little bit 'wired', nothing compares to sitting back with a beer or a port, turn down the lights and playing this album. It's mellow and magical melodies are extremely relaxing and highly enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars You hade to be there.......2007-07-22

I actually liked this campy off-broadway show. Come on, it was meant to be fun, and three cheers for Nikki Snelson!

However, when it comes to any soundtrack CD, I measure it on what you can get from just listening to it. This soundtrack is totally meaningless without the on stage antics.

1 out of 5 stars How To Save 15 Bucks and Find Something Better To Do for 90 Minutes.......2007-06-24

Did the first reviewer see the same play I saw? Impossible. The only reason I stayed to the end was because I paid for the ticket (half price) and it's a sin to waste money. Though its premise sounded appealing at first, I ended up being spectacularly unimpressed with both the story and the music. I squirmed in embarrassment for the composer and librettist, as this material was obviously supposed to be fresh and irreverent but instead was simply weak and painfully unfunny. I hope Mr Karp and Mr Weinstein have day jobs, because musical comedy is definitely not their calling.

1 out of 5 stars The Bomb on the Cover is Apt........2007-05-11

Do not be fooled by any shill reviews, this show was a disaster in its commercial off-Broadway run last fall. As a matter of fact, they were so desperate for audiences that they told people how to get half-price tickets in the famous New York times ABC ads; absolutely unheard of! The score is a mish-mash of derivative music aiming to be satirical and lyrics that (as one critic noted) "have a distressingly casual sense of rhyme." Having suffered through this show (luckily on a free ticket) the only saving grace of this recording is that one will be blessedly free of most of the book, quite possibly the stupidest seen in a "professional" musical in a generation; yet even with being blessedly ignorant of the story's shortcomings the score to this is all but unlistenable. Look up Variety's pan of this show online and you will see it actually contains the phrase "bring barf bags." Buyer beware.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing show.......2007-05-11

I saw this show last year with a free ticket. Unfortunately, I didn't get my value out of it. The music is pretty lackluster. The show had its moments, but I can't imagine the soundtrack being enjoyable in the least.

5 out of 5 stars New, original, and just a damn good musical.......2007-04-13

I saw this musical during it's first run off broadway in New York City and was blown away, so I was very excited to find the recording finally availible. The book is incredibly witty and cynical and the music is new and draws on tons of inspiration. You can catch Nicole Ruth Snelson on broadway now in Legally Blonde and Kevin Smith Kirkwood is simply amazing.

If you like new, adventurous and fun musicals, this is for you. It will make you think and laugh out loud.
