Album Description

The masterpiece of composer Francesco Cilea, "Adriana Lecouvreur" premiered in 1902 with Caruso in the tenor lead. It has remained a standard in Italy, though it is less famous abroad. This is one of its best recordings ever, with the great singing actress Magda Olivero literally living the title role, and a fabulous supporting cast headed by Franco Corelli. Live performance, Naples, November 28, 1959.

4 out of 5 stars The legendary interpretation of the composer's favourite soprano.......2006-01-13

Magda Olivero was Cilea's favourite soprano for the title role of this opera, and this recording is probably the best extant proof of his choice. Although her singning technique was not exceptional (in fact, she has been surpassed by Caballé), the colour of her voice and the distinction of her interpretation are unique and it is difficult to appreciate other sopranos as Adriana after you have listened to Olivero. It seems hard to believe today that a live recording could include such an exceptional cast. Franco Corelli possessed one of the most beautiful tenor voices of the 50s and 60s, and although many critics object his singing technique, he composes an excellent Maurizio. By the time of this recording (1959)he was at his best. Giulietta Simonatto was not only an outstanding singer, but her interpretation of the jealous and revengeful princess of Bouillon is also a reference. So is Bastianini's Michonnet. The quality of the sound is really good for a live recording. This recording of Adriana Lecouvreur is highly recommended as a fist choice, except to those who do not appreciate historical recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Olivero's Compelling Adriana.......2005-05-17

Francesco Cilea (1866-1950), like his fellow verismo opera composers Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana), Leoncavallo (I Pagliacci), and Giordano (Andrea Chenier), is chiefly remembered for just a single work. In Cilea's case, that work is "Adriana Lecouvreur" (1901-02). But unlike those other composers' operas, Cilea's Adriana really stands or falls on the performance of the soprano. That challenge is met with great success here: Magda Olivero's assumption of the title role is a memorable triumph of interpretation. Her voice is by no means perfect, but her portrayal is far more involving than anybody else's on record. I don't listen to opera as much as I once did, but when I'm in the mood to hear a soprano really command a role, Olivero is one of the first artists who springs to mind (the quite different Leyla Gencer is another).

Olivero was one of the only soprano stars in the Italian verismo opera firmament who didn't come from a peasant background (her father was a judge). Perhaps I'm biased, but there is something about her singing that's more aristocratic than what one hears from, say, Tebaldi, Scotto or Callas. Olivero retired early from the operatic stage (thus avoiding the sad fate of many sopranos who suffered neglect in the midst of the Callas-Tebaldi wars). But in 1951, she was persuaded by Cilea (who regarded her as his only famous opera's finest exponent) to return to the stage in Adriana, which she continued to perform for decades (her last performance was at age 83!). Talk about vocal longevity!

I saw Olivero perform just once, in the early 1970's at Newark, New Jersey, and the opera was, of course, Adriana. Never before or since have I witnessed a soprano "live" who so totally identified with the role she was singing. Sadly, she never made a studio recording of the complete opera. But fortunately, this CD set preserves a great "live" 1959 Naples performance conducted by Mario Rossi. To my ears, this is the opera's definitive recording. Olivero is magnificent throughout, and her colleagues are all in great voice (Corelli, Bastianini, and Simionato). Rossi's conducting isn't exactly subtle, but then this isn't exactly a subtle work. This CD transfer is definitely superior to my old pirate LP set on the MRF label. The sound is variable but adequate. There's lots of audience participation here (they go virtually berserk more than once), and it really adds a lot to the sense of occasion that is usually lacking in a studio recording. Corelli is his usual hammy self (but what a voice!), Bastianini sings with far greater warmth than in his disappointing Germont with Callas (the famous but poorly recorded Traviata at La Scala with Giulini), and Simionato belts out her villainess role with total conviction. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining accounts of ANY opera ever recorded.

A broader sample of Olivero's talents (Puccini, Cilea, Boito, Charpentier, etc.) can be heard on a Preiser CD, which has studio recordings made 1938-1953, when her voice was at its freshest. In 1938 her "Poveri fiori" from Adriana was even better sung than it is here - the final crescendo is simply staggering - but somehow it isn't quite as moving as in this performance 21 years later before a live audience.

A truly remarkable artist, whose singing remains a constant source of listening pleasure.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Olivero triumphant amid stellar cast.......2005-05-16

Magda Olivero, that radiant and glorious soprano, made too few studio recordings in her long career. So many of her live performances made their way into circulation, however, that she referred to herself as the Queen of the Pirates. She first sang the part of Adriana with Gigli as far back in 1938. She was a protegee of the composer, Cilea, and was regarded by him as the perfect exponent of the role. Her career fell into two parts, separated by a premature retirement. Cilea coaxed her back onto the stage specifically to sing this, his most successful opera, but he died before he could enjoy her triumphant return. Olivero was fully a peer of her younger contemporaries, Callas and Tebaldi. She was unmatched in the verismo repertory.

The four main singers in this performance are a quartet of such star power as seldom to be found since the original "Puritani" quartet. All were Italians. All had the verismo style in their blood. All were in excellent form. But "Adriana Lecouvreur" is the soprano's opera and the youthful Olivero triumphs. (For this recording, she was a mere slip of a girl at age 49, still years before her debut at the Metropolitan Opera. Her very last recording would consist of excerpts from "Adriana Lecouvreur" made at the age of 83.)

The sound quality on the recording is acceptable and about what might reasonably be expected from a live performance in 1959.

Documentation is fully up to the abysmal standards of Od'O. No libretto. Minimal plot synopsis. Nothing on the singers or the circumstances of the recording.

5 out of 5 stars a truly legendary operatic performance.......2004-10-12

This is one of those operatic live performances that has assumed a mythic status, in the same league as Caballe's star-making turn as Lucrezia Borgia. Magda Olivero, tragically, is not very well known, given that she didn't record much in the studio. However, thanks to live performances such as these, we will not have to guess about how the legend matches the hype. I have listened to this performance a few times by now, and I am blown away every time.

First, the opera itself is a neglected gem. Critics love to dismiss the plot, and the music. How can you dismiss such fine, tuneful, delicate music? And if the plot isn't that credible, it doesn't matter, since this is essentially a diva's chance to show off her theatrical ability.

Second, there is Olivero. This is a low-lying soprano role, like in other verismo operas. Olivero had an incredible range, and the low notes don't betray her, like they often did to Caballe. Her portamento is exquisite- she sounds like Tebaldi, but even more dramatic. Finally, there is that dramatic use of pianissimo, sung "on the breath." At every point, she nuances her performance, not just relying on prettily sung notes. Io Son L'Umile Ancella, the most recognizeable aria from Adriana, is sung with conviction. It is not seamless, but rather revelatory. Giusto Cielo, the declamation scene, is overwhelmingly powerful. If you understand the least bit of Italian, you will be roused. Even if you don't, just the way she declaims should rouse you! Finally, Poveri Fiori, sung by Olivero, is guaranteed to move you to tears. She "files" her voice down to a quiet pianissimo, so quiet you can barely hear it at one point. Every phrase is sung with unwavering conviction- you feel Adriana's incredible pain. Words can't really give justice to how incredibly Olivero sings this aria. Then, just when you've been moved to tears, you hear her dying gasps, and you are moved to tears again.

If every other singer on the recording was terrible, Olivero's Adriana would be enough to justify a spot in your collection for this opera. Fortunately, there are two other legends on the recording. You have Giulietta Simionato's Principessa, a vengeful creature that she sings with her fearsome, booming voice, replete with strong, secure high notes. The only heir to the Simionato throne was Fiorenza Cossotto, and since then we haven't had an Italian mezzo of this caliber. Speaking of caliber, you also have Franco Corelli's Maurizio. Yes, he is always loud and unsubtle, but I find him more likeable on this recording that I do others!

The conducting could have been more nuanced, but is adequate.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Olivero in 1971 live performance of good verismo opera.......2005-06-05

Source: This is live performance from Turin, dated October 22, 1971.

Sound: Fairly good, offering about a much as can reasonably be expected from a live performance of its time. This is the same performance that Gala issued in a quite wretched edition. This Opera d'Oro release offers markedly better sound. (Now, THERE is a sentence that one seldom has occasion to write!) There are a few moments of feet clomping on the stage. The audience is well-disciplined and scatters only a few coughs.

Documentation: Typical Od'O wasted opportunity. No libretto. Too short summary of the plot. The only list of performers, which is located on the back cover, offers the names of about half of the singers in solo parts. The track list does not identify who is singing and shows no timings. The tracks are over-long, with only ten used on Disk 2. The documentation on the Gala release is better, but that is only the faintest of praise.

A single hearing of "Risurrezione" is sufficient to establish that Franco Alfano had the verismo style down cold. The opera is absolutely at home with "Cavalleria Rusticana," "Pagliacci," "Andrea Chenier" and "Tosca." It is diatonic, melodic and orchestrally lush. But it is just a little late, just behind the crest of the verismo wave, so to speak. Alfano was a fine craftsman, with every tool in the verismo kit, lacking only the ability to craft a hit tune.

"Risurrezione" is based on Tolstoy's 1900 novel, "Resurrection." Despite that blue-blooded ancestry, Alfano's version is chock-full of good old, low-down, Italianate emotion. For once, Alfano managed to avoid the weak endings that plague his "Cyrano" and his completion of "Turandot." The last act of "Risurrezione" offers full-throttle exchanges between the tenor and the soprano that surely would wake up any audience.

The unquestioned star of this recording is that prima donna assoluta, Magda Olivero. The youthful Olivero (she was only about sixty at the time) sounds wonderful. The tenor, Giuseppe Gismondo was a real surprise to me. He presents a convincing performance with a big, powerful, dark voice. As far as I can gather, he sang extensively with the second-tier opera companies in the US during the 1960s. I find myself puzzled about why he did not become better known.

The rest of the cast is wholly unknown to me. On the whole, they are pretty good. I can't claim any familiarity with this opera beyond this performance, but the conducting seems to be both competent and appropriate.

The opera is a good piece of work, possessing almost all the virtues of the turn-of-the-Twentieth Century verismo school. Olivero is, as always, a true star and a genuine treat. Gismondo is a pleasing surprise.

      Five stars.

        5 out of 5 stars A Truly Special Singer.......2006-07-08

Magda Olivero began her career in the early 1930s and gradually built up a reputation in Italy as an outstanding lyric soprano before her retirement in 1941 due to marriage. The verisimo composer Cilea considered her to be the ideal interpreter of his operatic heroine Adriana Lecouvreur and tried hard to persuade her to come back to the stage after the War. She did make a come back in 1951. As a unique and highly distinguished interpreter of the verisimo roles, she managed to hold her ground despite the dominance of Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas in the Italian operatic scene. Her secure, durable technique as well as the long interval of rest enabled her to enjoy a long career of almost 60 years, singing well into her 80s and outlasting both her more famous colleagues [She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1975 as Tosca when she was 65 years old!].

The selections on this CD demonstrate why she has been so much cherished and prized by cognoscenti of vocal art. Indeed she deserves to be known as one of the truly great sopranos of the Twentieth Century. She possesses a voice capable of a wide range of colours and a great variety of expression, but most importantly, she is a stunning vocal actress owning an arsenal of crescendos and decrescendos of the most incredible intensity. Apart from the verisimo heroines of Puccini, Mascagni, Cilea, Catalani and Alfano, she makes a marvelous Violetta, with fantastic colouratura and heart-wrenching expressions in the Act I Scena from Verdi's La Traviata.

The Preiser issue of Olivero's records, made during her vocal prime between 1939 and 1953, is a wonderful souvenir of her special and inimitable artistry and musicianship. It's one that all fans of Italian operas should not be without.

        5 out of 5 stars I love this!.......2005-06-28

This disc leavs no doubt: If Magda Olivero had made more records, she would have been as famus and loved as Callas and Tebaldi. Olivero has everything: A beautifull voice, great technique and first class vocal acting. She is simply one of the most exciting sopranos ever recorded.

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible Artistry.......2005-04-21

Magda Olivero is an artist to her finger tips. Truly one of the finest soprano's of the twentieth century, she should be a role model for students of singing. Perfect legato, eveness of tone, superb control of dynamics at all levels are combined with passion, intensity and tenderness. These recordings range from 1939 to 1953 during the earlier phase of her career. The tone is lilting, heightened by a fast vibrato, which adds a luster and shine to the voice. Treat yourself to this recital. It is simply enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars Idiomatically superb, ensemble performance.......2005-05-21

Okay, so if you've heard the classy studio performances of DON CARLO on EMI, Decca, etc., and are wondering just how the opera sounds with a truly grand Italianate, idiomatic cast. HERE is where you may wish to start. Anita Cerquetti simply outsings and outshines most of her more famous competitors in the role of Elisabetta, including Tebaldi, Caballe, Mattila, etc. Christoff's Filippo is well known (via the early EMI 1950s recording and others, including a 1954 version on GOP records), and here he is superb. Giulio Neri was the Grand Inquisitor on the early EMI, his hollow, black voice resonating supremely, and once again he makes the role HIS own. Bastianini, along with Tito Gobbi, was the greatest Italian baritone of the 1950s and early '60s. His Posa here demonstrates why...once you hear HIM, you really can't listen to the "studio" Posas with the same ear, they simply pale in comparison. Fedora Barbieri is, IMHO, the very best Eboli on record, bar none. Angelo Lo Forese, while not a Corelli or Bergonzi, is certainly at home in the music and acquits himself well...he would be a superstar where he singing today. And, a word about the sound. It's okay, but not stereo, not "great" by today's standards...but it's listenable and you get used to it, because the great singing draws you in and holds you, gripping you, like only perhaps the Vickers-Brouwenstijn issue (on Myto) or some of the other live recordings manage to do. In any case, you can find this new and cheaply, if you look hard enough, or buy it second hand. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars such an exciting live recording.......2005-01-31

This is a review with a proviso: I like live recordings. This CD is a single recorded performance in Florence, and as a result has all the usual coughs, applause etc. and sound quality which is less than crystal clear (though perfectly good enough to enjoy... no crackling or hissing, it just doesn't sound as fresh as a studio recording).
The singing is largely excellent, and, in some cases, extraordinary. I am a big fan of Cesare Siepi, who sings King Philip, and he was in his absolute prime in the mid-1950s. His big aria (ella giammai m'amo) is wonderfully sung, and the Grand Inquisitor scene which immediately follows is a great performance of one of the greatest scenes in all opera.
Ettore Bastianini is also in good form as Posa - he had a really exciting voice, but a regrettably short career, and the whole cast is very strong.
I find that a live performance gives you a really interesting insight into what singers actually sounded like on a daily basis, rather than in a studio.
Of course, the price ($68 today) is pretty horrific, and I'm not sure I could justify buying this instead of one of the best studio recordings - I got it out from the library - but it's fascinating to listen to.
