This most serious and studious of German sopranos has a grand time--with no hint of condescension--in this collection of Viennese operetta arias, treating them with a meticulous musicality they rarely receive. In fact, lots of this music written by now-obscure names such as Heuberger, Zeller and Millocker isn't heard at all. But these isolated arias are marvelously lyrical and ingratiating with some deliciously comic counterpoint. One highpoint is the Nuns Chorus from Casanova, in which Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's voice soars above her fellow nuns, longing for her lover to rescue her from the cloister. It's some of the most unbuttoned singing of her career. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Schwarzkopf sings operetta.......2007-07-15
glittering Schwarzkopf.......2007-03-06
Schwarzkopf made her name in the Lieder and dramatic operas, but it's marvelous to hear how she sparkles and glitters on this album. Highlights include "Einer wird kommen" (from "Der Zarewitsch"); and "Heut' noch werd' ich Ehefrau" (from "Der Graf von Luxemburg"). There's also a lovely rendering of "Meine Lippen..." (from Lehar's oft-forgotten "Giuditta" score).
This album has been newly-remastered using Abbey Road's Prism SNS Noise-Shaping System, which blends the vocals of Schwarzkopf and the orchestra to create a crisp, clear soundscape, free from analogue distortion and other inherent recording problems. This album was originally recorded at the Kingsway Hall in 1957, but sounds as fresh as a daisy here.
As my fellow reviewer - Rudy Avila - has keenly noted, this album has a perfect companion in Schwarzkopf's disc Strauss: Four Last Songs/12 Orchestral Songs.

The Charm Of Schwarzkopf: Vienna Opera.......2004-04-20
Naturally, since this is taken from the original Long Playing album record, it sounds very old fashioned and dated. I did'nt hear any scratches or disruptions, so for the most part it's highly enjoyable and lovingly remastered for a cd. Schwarzkopf classic voice does seem to fit more suitably on the LP of a phonograph in a stylish salon in Paris or Vienna. I can imagine when she was singing in person and recording these albums, people were goo-ga ga over her. But even if you don't own a record player and you are up to date with the latest sound system technology, this will bring you back to the days when people crowded around parlors, either to their radios or phonographs and had conversations and drank champagne in genuine taste and good cheer. This will definately want to make you drink some fine champagne.

Beverly Sills Sings Operetta: A Rare Album.......2004-08-22
The rest of the arias are quite well done. Beverly Sills sings beautifully in German, and she is the equal of the German master soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, whom we are lead to believe she is modeling herself after in this recording. Schwartzkopf recorded an operetta album in 1959, which is available on EMI's Recordings Of The Century label. That album features much of the same pieces Beverly Sills is singing here. It's interesting to compare both singers and discover they both have artistry, skill and a floating, easy take on these non-dramatic simple pieces that are "dessert for the voice" in Sill's own words. Much like Schwarzkopf, Sills sings with refined elegance and calculated perfection. Her "In Chambre Separee" is beautiful, continental, and particularily good because Beverly Sill's French was always on the money. This aria combines French and German in a blissfully seductive way as a young maid invites a young man to an opera box where they could have dinner, champagne and a heart to heart. The Marlene Deitrich style aria "Meine Lippen" is sung perfectly by Beverly Sills. This aria is a cabaret style song in which the singer reflects on her showy, nightlife style of living. Finally, the aria "Wien, Wien" is a gorgeous praise to the city of Vienna.

What is it about Jerry Hadley that no matter what he sings, he seems to be just right for the music.
Oh, yeah - I forgot. It's because he is a fabulous musician and probably the most underrated singer in the world today.
I also have a feeling that no small measure of the success of this effort is the incandescent conducting of Richard Bonynge.

The only album I need? Not really........2004-06-14
First there is the matter of the composers represented. Offenbach, Strauss, Lehar, Flotow. So far, we're good. The inclusion of Robert Stolz and Carl Zeller would be alright, except that there is nothing by Gilbert and Sullivan, Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and a couple other giants of operetta. There is also a further insult; the bizarre inclusion of two versions of 'Dein ist mein ganzes herz', one in German, and one in English. This is, to be sure, a great operetta moment, but is operetta really so bereft of great moments as to warrant the inclusion of two versions of the same tune? Or did the compilers not realize they were one and the same? Neither answer inspires confidence. It even appears that one of the tracks, "Wien wird bei Nacht erst schoen" is not actually from an operetta, which is truly inexcusable in light of the glaring omissions of entire categories of operetta. And couldn't we get a recording with Stolz conducting his own pieces? Presumably BMG had access to such recordings, seeing as he conducts three of the other tracks on the album. And surely there are more numbers to mine from Fledermaus that rank higher than some of these maudlin numbers from Viennese oddities.
The performances are admirable, particularly Domingo's 'M'appari', which is as good as one might expect from him, and 'Das Leben Ruft', a glittering number by Lucia Popp in fine form. But the tracks by Moffo and Caballe are not terribly good; the two were clearly past their primes. Rudolf Schock sounds much better in the redundant 'Dein ist mein ganzes herz' than he does in 'Komm in die Gondel', which is pretty dismal until the very end, where he pulls out a nice closing note in head voice. Wunderlich is predictably good at this material, as is von Stade. Jerry Hadley is exceptional at the 'Wolgenlied', but sounds pretty ordinary in 'Schoen ist die welt'
I think there are some people for whom this is exactly the sort of music that represents the best of operetta. Perhaps for them the album should be titled: 'Great moments from the world of operetta', or maybe: 'The best of French and German operetta'. If that were what we were shooting for, an album of syrupy Mario Lanza and Fritz Wunderlich would actually exceed some expectations. But this album sets an impossible goal for itself, and does not meet even the bare minimum expected of an indispensable opera album. Try something else.

A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19
Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.
Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.
I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.
Tauber, I believe, somehow had the secret of touching the hearts and minds of all who listened to his singing - composers, colleagues, chancellors and charwomen. This comprehensive and well-planned issue will ensure that his work with the Hungarian composer Franz Lehar will continue to charm and delight.

Clocking in at nearly 80 minutes, this CD of Viennese operetta arias should carry a surgeon general's warning against overdosing on sugary confections. The music's grand, though, and with so many favorite operetta hits zipping by, the time flies. Not all the way back to old Vienna, however, since today's all-stars can't challenge memories of Richard Tauber, Josef Schmidt, and other stylish exponents of singing in three-quarter time. But they acquit themselves well, and sopranos Eva Lind and Andrea Rost are especially fetching. Baritone Thomas Hampson is idiomatic and also sounds like he's having fun, while Placido Domingo gives considerable pleasure. José Carreras's fans will be disappointed--he's clueless in Vienna. But for a real treat, listen to Rost's "Meine Lippen" from Lehar's Giuditta. Hot stuff! --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
