Customer Reviews:

Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
An outstanding survey of recordings for harp and orchestra........1998-12-21
Disc 1 contains familiar harp concerti by Handel and Mozart, followed by a lesser known work by Eichner. The melodies and performances are guaranteed to work their way deep into your soul. Ursula Holliger (oboe virtuoso Heinz Holliger's wife, in case you were wondering) produces a stellar performance in the Handel concerto. Her technique and interpretation are both insightful and strongly delivered. The orchestras in question should by no means be ignored. I Musici, The London Symphony, and Musica Antiqua Koln (for the Handel, Mozart, and Eichner, respectively) are all names to be reckoned with in the field and they do not disappoint.
Disc 2 consists of more modern works by composers less familiar even to classical music fans except, of course, those who know Villa-Lobos and Rodrigo for their classical guitar music. The works on the second disc are somewhat less accessible to the casual listener, but after repeated listenings, I find them well worth the effort.
In short, stuffing this CD into your car stereo system (or, as in my case, the passenger-seat boombox) will make that jerk in the Beemer who just cut you off, far less relevant.

Good singing.......2007-02-23
The CD begins with the great Cantabile-Cabaletta from Bellini's "I Puritani"--"Qui la voce. . . Vien diletto." Immediately, we become aware of her heavier darker voice. The pace begins slowly. Her line is smooth, but there is some harshness in her voice early on. "Vien diletto" demonstrates her agility. There is, in this cut, a certain hard edge to her higher notes. In the repeat, she hits the notes cleanly. There is not much in the way of trills, but the final high note is fine.
From a very different type of work, Puccini's "Turandot," she sings "Signore, ascolta." Her voice seems to fit this work very well. One might, to compare very different voices, listen to Anna Moffo's version. Orgonasova's characterization appears nicely done. She demonstrates a smooth line. She floats a nice set of notes at the conclusion of the piece.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamonix," Orgonasova sings "O luce di quest' anima." Her voice is smooth in the opening segment. When she ups the volume for some high notes, there appears some harshness of tone. In the cabaletta, she shows an agile voice. She also demonstrates good appoggiaturas. Her trills? They range from indifferent to awfully good! The repeat of the cabaletta demonstrates good coloratura technique. The final runs are fine and the finale is very well done indeed.
Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" features one of the gold standards of coloratura singing--"The Mad Scene." She shows off smooth singing in "Il dolce suono." Her heavier voice works pretty well here. The "il fantasma" sequence is dramatically rendered. All in all, nicely done. "Ardon gl'incensi" is smoothly sung. The florid singing is also competently done. Trills are indifferent in this portion of the "Mad Scene"; there is a good high note to finish off this sequence. And, of course, there is "Spargi d'amaro pianto." The first "go through"" is fine and the musicality is good. There are some decent trills. In the repeat, she increases the "floridity" quotient (if there is such a term), but it is not at the same level as a Sutherland or Sills. There is a very well done trill off of a high note late in the repeat. The final note is fine, but she appears to "scoop" a bit.
All in all, a good performance. While there are some problems (some harsh high notes and a trill that varies from mediocre to very good), her rich, dark voice animates the material on this CD. For those interested in good sopranos of the past quarter century, this is worth adding to one's musical library.
Don't hesitate.......2006-12-11
But the real prize is Ms. Orgonosova's golden, warm and agile soprano! Both in the coloratura and more verissimo roles, she is exemplary. Talk about a lovely tone of voice... Joan Sutherland was mentioned in an earlier review and you'd be well on target, in terms of that calibre.
An excellent rendition of the arias here and a good selection of arias too. Without reservations, I recommend this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Very good..........2007-03-29
Yet, the only reason why I gave it 3 stars, was for the mere reason that Ride of the Valkyries is an excerpt, don't get me wrong, it is extremely well played, yet, that fact that it is a 3+ minute excerpt is rather disappointing. Also, you may hear an awckward timpani entrance in Tannhauser, but that is no reason not to buy this album. Some may complain that Solti liked overblown brass, but in my experience as an orchestral player, for Wagner, you need brass, and no the brass is not overblown.
My other comment on this album is The Flying Dutchman (Der Fliegende Hollander). Performed by the Vienna Phil. (Wiener Phil.), this performance is simply awesome. I still need to get the one with CSO, but as far as this goes, this track is simply awesome. I sincerely think if you do purchase this CD you will enjoy not only The Flying Dutchman, but the rest of the tracks as well. Enjoy!
Solti Speaks Wagnerian.......2002-10-25
The reason I did not give this disc 5 stars, is because I also found the abbreviated 3 minute clip of The Ride of the Valkyries to be not only disappointing but also unacceptable.
Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg is vintage Solti. His interpretation is probably one of the standard measures for others to compare on this one.
The Rienzi Overture is well done. However, I believe most will find the version conducted by George Szell of the Cleveland Orchestra to be the best. Look for it in Sony's Essential Classics.
Most should find this CD a valuable addition to a basic collection of Wagner instrumentals and I recommend it highly.
Not really great playing..........2002-10-11
If you like Solti and his approach to Wagner, you might want to give this a try. If not, there are better to be found.
