Recorded in 1931 with the greatest French singers of the day, this is the basic stylistic reference recording for this opera about the Byronic hero who commits suicide on Christmas Eve over his love for a married woman. The title role is sung by Georges Thill, one of France's most charismatic, commanding singers ever, though his labored high notes take some getting used to. In general, this was not an era of especially tidy vocalism. No adjustment is necessary for mezzo-soprano Ninon Vallin (Charlotte), thanks to the warmth of her personality and generous tone. As Sophie, Germaine Feraldy is a treat with her full-bodied coloratura voice and winning sense of style. She's tidy, too. --David Patrick Stearns

True Verdian Style.......2002-12-04

At long last, a modern recording of "Il trovatore" that is a model of Verdian style! Humburg is simply superb, accompanying his singers with razor-like precision while pacing with an unerring sense of line. His use of the recent critical edition also pays innumerable dividends in terms of dynamics and orchestral coloring. Indeed, his handling of the finale as finally realized as Verdi intended (and not, as incorrectly noted in an alternate review, with distended dynamics and vocal excisions) is revelatory. Longhi's Leonora does not have Milanov's bravura nor Callas's intensity, but has a more appropriate timbre (as Price does not) and underlines the heroine's essential femininity and vulnerability. Frusoni cannot match Björling's grace and beauty (who today can?) and lacks a trill in "Ah, si, ben mio" but sports a handsome voice, is attentive to dynamics, and exhibits a rare and welcome understanding of Manrico's neuroses. Tschistiakova does have a strong vibrato but is marvelous in her dramatic give and take with Frusoni. Above all there is a superb performance of Di Luna's music by Roberto Servile - a true Verdi baritone: high, bright, and firm. His performance of "Il balen"is one of the few in the last 60 years that can be admired beside De Luca's incomparable version. At Naxos's astonishingly inexpensive price why be satisfied with excerpts? Buy the complete set and experience Humburg's brilliance in toto.

Good, but lacking in emotion.......2001-07-16

This is a quite good version of Il Trovatore, but it has several problems. Maurizio Frusoni gave an attempt at being an especially heroic Manrico, but instead sounded thick, bellowing, and even comical, though I liked his "Deserto sulla terra" and "Ah, si, ben mio!" Daniela Longhi gives a sweet, pretty attempt at Leonora, but fails to be the same type of Leonora that Price or Callas portrays. Longhi is rather weak, sweet, but fairly convincing, while Price or Callas would be beautiful, strong and very convincing- a heroine. Roberto Servile was wonderful as the Count di Luna, if a bit weak up high and honky down low. Irina Tschistiakova was a great Azucena. She is not quite in the class of Cossotto or Zajick, but she gives a terrifying, "Stride la vampa." Will Humburg is no Karajan when conducting, and he made one terrible choice- making the last few lines of the opera be sung alone, with practically no orchestral accompaniment. "Egli era tuo fratello" is sung quietly and weakly, "Ei! Quale orror!" sounds anything but castounded- almost cheerful, and in the line, "Sei vendicata, o madre!" there is a long pause before the Count says, "E vivo ancor!" A horrible decision. However, don't let this stop you from buying this cd- I would suggest it, but not if you are new to this opera.

Highlights do classic 'Aida' justice.......2001-08-10

I wasn't sure whether to get the complete opera or simply the highlights of this Giuseppe Verdi classic. Opting for the latter, I can safely I was not disappointed, and in fact quite pleased.

The highlights version of 'Aida', the lush, intricate story of an Ethiopian slave girl whom the opera is named after, is simply marvelous as it brings forth all the important components of the story. Some of the best pieces are included, including the sadly beautiful "I sacri nomi di padre", as well the glorious chorus of "Vieni, o guerriero vindice". The singers are all suited well for their expectations, and the sound recording is excellent.

'Aida' is truly a work of Verdi's greatness, and the highlights edition doesn't fail to deliver. The complete opera is, I'm sure, even better. But you will not be disappointed with the edited version. It is superb.
