Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid Handelian music.......2003-02-20

There is always a first time. Everything has to start somewhere right? Well, I will admit to all now, that while I am definitely as big a fan as any of the genious and mastery of Handel, also owning an extensive collection of his music, I had not before this actually heard a complete opera of his before. Ever!! I guess like everyone else I had heard the various arias, excerpts and so forth, and I guess the closest thing to Handelian opera I had heard was Handelian oratorio.

So I was pleasantly surprised by this first listening, and without pretence to any expertise on Handelian opera, I recommend it highly. From the first bar to the last, your ears are treated to a festival of colourful sound and tuneful melodies. Worth noting, from a techinical point of view, the overture, and it's fugue are absolutely marvellous. Bold in subject, and strong in the working, it is a vast display of Handel's supremity, along with Bach, in the field of counterpoint and polyphony.

Another stunning example of good, solid Handelian music. Good old Handel does it again!!

5 out of 5 stars Sing along with Handel.......2000-01-29

I just bought this CD set as a replacement for an old cassette version that I'd simply worn out after many years. This opera has no dead spots. The music is bright and effervescent, and just rolls right along. It's a beautiful recording with lovely voices and sprightly musicianship, played on period instruments. NOT a big head trip, just fine, fun music. You'll soon find yourself singing in the shower!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Opera!.......2000-01-07

I had never heard of this opera before I came accross it at an internet auction, but being a huge fan of Handel I decided to buy it and I'm glad I did. This opera is one of the best I've heard from Handel or any other composer for that matter. With many great arias sung by an excellent cast this cd set is well worth the price and as I know of no other recording of Tamerlano I can recommend it without reservation.
