This is a must have if you are not familiar with zarzuela (Madrid's response to Vienna's operetta). It's a nice combination of arias sung by Caballe in beautiful voice and joined by her husband tenor Bernabe Marti for the duets. The CD comes with translations for non Spanish speaking which will greatly improve your satisfaction.
Caballe is in as beautful voice as ever and feels at home with this non very taxing repertoire. She doesn't overindulge in her other times frequent "floatiness" and is very expressive throughout. Thogh sometimes when some coloratura is needed she tends to drop the consonants blurring her enunciation of the words. We are used to this from her opera recordings though she's not as bad as Sutherland.
Marti is a nice tenor but is not in the same league as Caballe. That's why he never got star recognition though he made a few recordings whith his wife, like Bellini's "Il Pirata". His is a lyrical tenor, a little throaty but with nice projection of the sound. He sounds a little strained over the "passagio" but hits all the notes. More importantly, he compensates for his lack of vocal lustre with burning impersonations of his characters. Passionate and burning in some, tender and caressing in others. In this respect is better than his wife who is a little more doll like hidding behind her vocal resources. So I specially enjoyed the many and varied duets in this recording.
Strongly recommended.

Great Voices of the 1920s in Opera and Operetta........2001-12-30

The Nimbus method of reprocessing historical recordings is particularly kind to singers who recorded by the acoustic process, before the advent of electric recording in 1925. In this third issue of their "Golden Age of Singing" series, Nimbus Records cover the years 1920-1930. About a dozen recordings from the pre-electric era are found here, including items by Galli-Curci and de Luca who featured in the second issue in this series. Other singers featuring again in this third series include Lotte Lehmann and Giovanni Martinelli, heard here in 1927 recordings.

Whatever criteria you use to assess anthologies of great singers, you will probably be well satisfied with this splendid issue. If you collect the works of particular singers, you will find not only representative but also rare items. I count the Pinza item as both. It shows him at his best, and has hitherto not found its ways into my CD collection. Occasionally items are not sung in their original language. Frida Leider's "Don Giovanni" aria sung in German in 1922 is preferred to her 1927 remake sung in Italian. Hina Spani sings Elsa's Dream in Italian. Some singers are recorded at the very end of their careers. Scottish soprano Mary Garden, Debussy's first Melisande, is heard in 1927 at her last recording session. Representing a miracle of good singing and longevity is Lucien Fugère recording a Gluck aria in 1928 at the age of 80. Tauber is heard near the beginning of his career in 1923. Youngest of all is the German baritone Gerhard Hüsch, aged 27.

I doubt that many who are considering purchase, every heard any of these singers. I happen to have heard two of them, when a very young man - Ninon Vallin and Elisabeth Schumann. To those who collect great voices on record, whether ever heard in performance or not, I restate that these Nimbus anthologies offer recreations of acoustic recordings that are well worth considering.

A very good quality compilation at a very good price- part of the nibus prima voce series of which I have many items.

Miguel Fleta was a tenor of magnificent ability: virile as a Corelli but with a more beautiful tone in addition to a nearly effortless top. The voice is nearly identical from top to bottom. Listne to the first aria from La Favorita- he walks up to a high C# effortlessly and with a totally full sound that seems not to modify at any point along the way. Also his morendo is almost unbelievable- pulling off of high c's like young di Stefano but without the vocal flaws. Apparently, Fleta has a few critics, but I cannot imagine why.

How can you possibly go wrong with a tenor this good at a price like this?

Fleta and the Spanish repertoire.......2000-10-06

Although the international career of the Spanish tenor Miguel Fleta (1893-1938) was relatively brief (ten years or so), he was quite a hit in his time. Not only did he phenomenally succesfully perform in many important opera houses, he was also the creator of the role of Calaf in Puccini's opera 'Turandot' and thus the first tenor to sing the now so famous 'Nessun dorma'.

The selections on this CD, most of them of arias and ensembles from 'zarzuelas' recorded between 1927 and 1931, used to be some of my great favorites during the LP era, and I'm so glad I've found them again now on disc. They show Fleta's almost hypnotic use of legato, masculinity of tone and expression, and quite considerable dash. He was always able to apply rubati with amazing swellings and diminuendos all over the place and make, as it were, time stand still and yet keep the music moving forward. It seems to me that in the Spanish repertoire as found on this disc he was even more persuasive in doing just that. Just listen to the numbers (six total) from Arrieta's very melodious zarzuela 'Marina' wherein he is joined by several Spanish colleagues, notably Emilio Sagi-Barba, in duets, trios, a quartet, etc., and you just wish (I do, that's for sure) they had recorded it complete.

I find the other selections equally engaging. I must say that even though I hardly understand any Spanish, I feel drawn in every time I hear him sing these arias and songs. The very last number on this CD is actually not Spanish at all, although sung in that language. It is the famous Marseillaise, sung with chorus and quite stirringly so!

At all times Fleta seemed to be capable of creating a different mood for anything he sang, whether it was martial, tender, exuberant, nostalgic, or what have you. The voice must have been immensely powerful, yet he could come round with the most incredible pianissimi you ever want to hear. His vocal enunciation and style may not be 'politically correct' in the more streamlined times we live in today, but, when used with so much conviction and artistry, I can relish it any day. I'm listening to it now.

Una gran "Marina"........2003-09-05

Nos encontramos ante una grabación de la ópera española belcantista "Marina", de Emilio Arrieta en una de sus mejores versiones discográficas hasta la fecha.
Es "Marina" una obra con arias largas y de gran dificultad para la soprano protagonista, aquí una MARÍA BAYO en absoluto estado de gracia, que sortea sin problemas las complicadísimas coloraturas de su parte.
Como Jorge se presenta uno de los grandes intérpretes del papel: el gran tenor ALFREDO KRAUS, en la que fue su última grabación de una obra completa. No está tan brillante como en su anterior grabación de esta ópera, pero no obstante está francamente muy notable y deja muchísimos detalles de calidad.
El barítono JUAN PONS es un soberbio Roque y ENRIQUE BAQUERIZO borda también la ingrata parte de Pascual. Completan el reparto JUAN JESÚS RODRÍGUEZ (Capitán Alberto / Marinero) y ENCARNA SANTANA (Teresa)de forma sobresaliente.
Bien el coro y muy bien la ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DE TENERIFE a las órdenes de un muy eficaz VÍCTOR PABLO PÉREZ.
Definitivamente esta es una versión para disfrutar "Marina" a lo grande si ya se conoce, o para descubrir un bello título operístico muy bien cantado si se está ante una obra desconocida.

Marina, a work by Emilio Arrieta, is one of the most famous examples of the zarzuela grande. Originally a zarzuela, it was later made into an opera by the composer, by a petition of the great nineteenth-century tenor Enrico Tamberlick. Marina is mostly a tribute to the belcanto opera with some Spanish influences. Its graceful melodies give plenty of opportunities for great singers to display their voices. This recording, made with an internationally known Spanish cast, really outshines all the previous recordings of the work. There is an obvious respect and commitment to the musical values of the work. Maria Bayo shines in the title role. The soprano brings her fresh voice and artistry to this florid coloratura role, specially in the beautiful "Pensar en él" and in the difficult final scene and rondo. This is the last recording of the great Alfredo Kraus. At this final stage of his life and career his voice did not sound as fresh and youthful as on his glory days. However, Alfredo Kraus in his final years is much better than younger tenors on the contemporary scene. It is stunning to hear the command of his high register, his energy and presence. His command of the belcanto style is present during all the recording, specially at the end of the first act, "¡Feliz morada donde nací!". Juan Pons is another asset, his robust baritone giving an ironic counterpart to the tender outburts of Bayo and Kraus. The supporting roles are also excellent, specially Enrique Baquerizo as Pascual. The Chorus and Symphonic Orchestra of Tenerife, ably conducted by Victo Pablo Pérez, complete this excellent performance. Another great recording by Auvidis, who continues in its commendable effort to make known to the world the wonders of Spanish musical theater.

A SPANISH OPERA.......2004-02-03

Zarzuela is not very well known abroad Spain. A pity, because it is a beautiful gender. Marina is more an opera than a zarzuela. A beautiful one. This recording I think is one of the best. Maria Bayo has a special sensitivity for her character. She has her voice totally under control, not only singing but also saying. Which is probably on what many singers spoil zarzuelas.
As for Alfredo Krauss I think that is a perfect rol for him. Following his "bel canto" way. He was still a great singer, although I think sometimes there is a lack of feeling.

Juan Pons is a great bass. He can change from a powerful performance to a subtil one, with no aparent effort. Only for him this cd is a jewel.

So if you like good music and good singers, there is no doubt you must listen this cd.
