Having dazzled us with her coloratura ability in arias by Mozart, Gluck, and her fellow Czech, Myslivecek, this luscious young mezzo-soprano now offers us a generous program of French arias--15 of them, widely varied in tone, weight, dramatic intent, and style--and conquers and convinces in them all. Beginning again in coloratura territory, an aria from Auber's rare Le domino noir catches our attention with the heroine's opening words, "Je suis sauvée enfin!" ("I am safe at last!"), in which she paints the picture of our out-of-breath heroine immediately. Throughout the CD we meet the doomed, tragic Sappho in Gounod's opera; Dulcinée in the same composer's Don Quichotte, here presented first as lamenting lover, then as spitfire, with Kozena reaching down into her most sultry chest voice; a dreamy Marguerite in Berlioz's La damnation de Faust; a Princess languorously singing of the night in an exquisite aria from Gounod's all-but-unknown Cinq-Mars; and many others, each of whom Kozena imbues with her individual stamp, flawless technique, musicality, and beautiful tone. Almost as a bonus, the CD ends with Carmen's Gypsy Song - a real razzle-dazzler. Kozena is a great singer and this is a great recital CD--a must. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Un repertorio nuevo para Magdalena Kozena.......2005-07-13

this mzzo-soprano is great... she is a lighter and lyric mezzo. In this album... she sung the french arias with phrasing in detail... especially in the "Nuit Resplendissante". The balance between head vioce and chest voice in her singing is good. Her singing can really touches my heart...
it is worthy to buy this album... especially than you are tired in listening to the darker or dramatic mezzo-sopranos.

5 out of 5 stars Pure musical pleasure.......2002-02-07

This might not be the most profound music ever written but few recordings give as much sheer, unadulterated pleasure as this one. Even if Auber doesn't explore any great depths of feeling, he certainly manages to convey one emotion better than most other composers: pure joy. This set is a delight from beginning to end. Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber is probably most famous in the history books for "La Muette de Portici" (or "Masaniello" as it is sometimes called), which played an important role in the development of French 'grand opera' (and, incidentally, in the creation of Belgium - inspired by the patriotic arias in a production of this opera in Brussels in 1830, discontented local students took to the streets and rioted against the Dutch authorities, an act which was soon to culminate in the country's independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. So perhaps Auber was responsible for the most influential 'political' music ever written!). But Auber is probably at his best in his lighter 'operas comiques', which were wildly successful with Parisian audiences - "Le Domino Noir" notched up 1209 performances between its premiere in 1837 and 1909. The style is perhaps most reminiscent of Rossini, but it has a more dancelike, 'bouncy' feel to it, with infectious, toetapping rhythms driving the music irresistibly along, except in the more lyrical love music. It was Rossini himself who described Auber's style as 'petite musique d'un grand musicien' ('minor music by a major composer'), since Auber was no amateur but a highly educated musician who chose to exercise his talents on lightweight music. He would often give his operas 'local colour': in 'Le Cheval de Bronze' it was Chinese music, in 'Les Diamants de la Couronne', Portuguese. Here there is a distinct Spanish flavour, complete with castanets in the heroine's show-stopping "Aragonaise". Auber also differentiated the music of each act - the first, a masked ball, is predominantly made up of dance music, including a bolero; the second act is a late night party with rousing drinking songs and choruses; finally, in the third act, set in a convent, there is even a 'religious' feeling to some of the music, with organ accompaniment.

It's impossible to imagine a livelier, more sympathetic performance of this opera than this recording. The singers are uniformly excellent, even if they are not all well-known names. Just the right amount of Scribe's extensive dialogue has been left in between the musical numbers and it is sparkingly performed (and as an added bonus, a few recitatives have been inserted, composed by Tchaikovsky especially for a late nineteenth century Russian production). The Bonynge-Jo team went on to record another 'opera comique', Adam's "Le Toreador", which is only slightly less successful than "Le Domino Noir". They should definitely follow it up with further examples from this genre: more Auber would be great, or how about Herold's "Zampa", famous for its overture, but yet to be treated to a complete recording? (Brys)

    5 out of 5 stars Sparkling Performance!.......2000-09-07

It is always welcome the revival of works that deserve to be in the standard repertoire. Le Domino Noir by Auber is a really brilliant opéra comique that receives on this recording a brilliant performance. The work itself is very effective, with a witty plot and sparkling music, reminiscent sometimes of Rossini but with a distinctive French flavor. The performances of this disc are a delight. Sumi Jo, as Angèle d'Olivarès, displays her brilliant coloratura soprano with charm and great diction. She sounds positively joyous in the Aragonaise, handles with ease the difficult patter of "Ah! Quelle nuit!" and is technically brilliant in "Flamme vengereuse". Bruce Ford displays a beautiful lyric tenor voice that is both flexible and expressive. Isabelle Vernet, Martine Olmeda and the rest of the talented cast display vocal mastery and comedic talent. The London Voices and the English Chamber Orchestra complement this great recording. Of course, an important part of the success is due to Richard Bonynge, who seems very much at ease with this music, providing an energetic conducting and creating beautiful vocal ornamentation for the singers. This recording brings a refreshing alternative for any music lover.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes it is enough to be tuneful, graceful & light..........2000-07-15

Daniel-François-Esprit Auber achieved lasting successes with such works as "Fra Daviolo" (1830), "Le Domino noir" (1837: 1,209 performances up to 1909), and "Les Diamants de la couronne" (1847). All of them in the genre "opéra-comique".

This opera: "Le Domino noir", it is sparklingly tuneful, immediately pleasing to ear, with a captivating grace and wit; the orchestration is masterfully crafted to please the Paris' audiences of the 19th century (he never leaves unattended the counterpoint and the harmony in his compositions).

I enjoyed the "ronde aragonaise" (CD 1, Track 17) sung by Sumi Jo with shinning musicality & bringing her technical brilliance to the role of Angèle. The overture hint us to the spanish flavor of the opera which is at its best on Act II: the "couplets" de Jacinthe, the "réveillons" ensemble, the "rondo" mentioned above, and the "couplets" de Gil Pérez. In Act III, Angèle's aria: "Je suis sauveé enfin... Ah! quelle, nuit!" (I am save at last... Ah! what a night!) (CD 2, Track 4), which is a "tour de force" for the soprano (Sumi Jo), as well as the chorus of nuns: "Ah! quel malheur our nous! (Ah, what a misfortune for us!) (CD 2, Track 6), are very good displays of light humor focused against certain religious attitudes of 19th century.

This Auber's composition will entertain you without being as emotionally deep as Verdi & Donizetti. Sometimes it is enough to be tuneful, graceful, elegant and light...

    5 out of 5 stars A great mystery.......1999-11-17

"Le Domino Noir" is such a delightful, elegant and utterly irresistible opera that one wonders why it's not perform with more frequency. Recordings such as this, filled with élan and joie de vivre reminds one of the effects of fine champagne and further proves that when it comes to elegance and charm, no one can hold a candle to the French. A delightful recording of a gem of an opera, which judging by the results, was as fun to perform and record as it is to hear. Bonynge is most assuredly in his element. "

    5 out of 5 stars sensational Sumi!.......2006-10-23

Sumi Jo is one of the greatest coloratura sopranos of recent times. This disc from Decca compiles many of her best arias. Hers is a bell-like voice with a very high capacity for those wicked top notes, but her mid-voice is also warm and well developed. Many sopranos find a balance between their head and chest voices very difficult, but Sumi Jo does not, allowing a greater variety in repertoire, and abundance of roles.

Sumi Jo has made the role of "Die Zauberflote"'s Queen of the Night her own, and this disc includes the murderously-difficult "Der Holle Rache" and "O zittre nacht" arias. Other choice pieces include "Sevilliana" (Massenet's "Don Cesar de Bazan"); "Bolero" (Boieldieu's "La Fete du village"); and "Valse tyrolienne" (Offenbach's "Un mari a la porte").

I also recommend the many other Sumi Jo recordings, specifically her album 'Les Bijoux' which focuses on the French arias (available on the Erato label). For those who would like a concise collection of Sumi, or are beginning a collection, this disc is a wise purchase.

While this disc is currently out-of-print, most of the selections also appear on the 2-CD set 'Portrait of Sumi Jo', available on Decca [473 821-2].

5 out of 5 stars Best for a Sumi Jo primer.......2005-06-28

This includes a sampler of arias taken directly from the recordings of operas, as opposed to the arias sung solo with backing orchestra which is the case in some of her other CDs. I like it better when I hear her in the context of the other singers and the narrative of the story.

So if you don't own any Sumi Jo CDs yet, you might want to check this one out first.

What more could I say about her voice? Though certainly no soprano expert, and not really a fan of opera, I can say that her voice is one of the most beautiful that I've ever heard. Arvo Part is quoted as saying that "the voice is the most perfect of instruments" and in that cases Sumi Jo may have in her posession one of the most perfect vocal instruments.

Another of her CDs that I enjoy very much, and which is not opera arias, is "Prayers." For those like me who do not appreciate as much the opera arias with their trills, this might be another title to check out.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunningly GORGEOUS.......2004-01-18

Her voice is incredibly beautiful... I've never heard such effortless high notes from a soprano leggiero.. Brilliant is not enough to describe this gem of a voice! It's a gift from God! Buy this and be enchanted by the goddess of beautiful singing!

    5 out of 5 stars A Thousand Stars!.......2003-05-08

I can think of no better description of Sumi Jo's incredible voice - especially as displayed on this CD - than a quote from Ann Patchett's "Bel Canto: A Novel":

Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. How far she must have gone inside herself to call up that voice. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven.

This is most assuredly a "must-have" CD, and one I treasure. There's not a bad track or false note...as close to Heaven as we'll be this side of Heaven itself.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Coloratura.......2002-02-08

There's not much I can write that Andre hasn't already said - I just wanted to second his recommendation of this CD. One of my favorite tracks is the delightful "Ah, vous dirai-je, maman" from a French opera-comiquè by Adam. Just try not to smile. Additionally, this CD features the two highlight Queen of the Night arias from "Die Zauberflöte" - "O Zittre Nicht" and "Der Hölle Rache", for which Sumi Jo is justly famous. I prefer these recordings to those on the Arnold Östman recording of The Magic Flute on period instruments (which is a pity because that recording features Barbara Bonney - the best Pamina I've ever had the pleasure of listening to). On that recording, Sumi sounds too quiet and restrained - "Der Hölle Rache", an aria of rage and terrible beauty, comes out sounding like a very rushed vocal exercize (albeit a beautiful one :). On this disc, however, the two arias are sung with power and presence.

Anyway, if you're looking for brilliant coloratura singing with impeccable technique, look no further - here is your CD. I think it's a shame that this CD is not more widely available - best of luck in obtaining it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great document of a long-lost orchestral sound.......2003-11-11

Hearing these old recordings, which for years were around as budget LP pressings of mediocre quality on the London Stereo Treasury label, are a great joy for me. There is no better example of the distinctive sound of French orchestral playing - a sound that is gone from the world forever. They were recorded in Paris in 1956 and 1957 by the Orchestra of the Paris Conservatory, where the techniques that created this style and sonority were taught for many years. The woodwinds and brass, in particular, are unlike anything you hear these days. Over the decades of the 20th century wind instruments had taken on a brighter, louder, and more piercing quality throughout the world, and playing techniques evolved to take advantage of them. But this is an interesting peek into an earlier time, like opening the door to a concert hall, taking your seat, and suddenly realizing that you've gone back in time 50, 80, maybe 100 years. The horns, in particular, have a muted quality, and are played with a marked vibrato. Years ago I used to hear ignorant people refer to this as a "wobble," a term which describes a flawed vocal technique in which a singer's vibrato becomes too wide, uneven, and uncontrolled. But this sound is intentional -- not a defect, but an aesthetic choice. Overall, the orchestral sound is a richer, darker one that I find very appealing. It's like the difference between Brie and Cheese Whiz.

Albert Wolff was a great theater conductor who had long since mastered these scores, which he was now recording in stereo in the twilight of his career. This is an outstanding documentation of a long-lost musical style, the likes of which we will never hear again. For connoisseurs, no selling is required. For all others, give it a try. You may discover the connoisseur in you, too.

          Album Description

"Auber's music has an irresistible snappiness, and the Offenbach-like energy of the exchanges is compelling ... the patter songs (reminiscent of Rossini), sparkling coloratura, and decadent waltzes are beguilingly slick." - ROUGH GUIDE TO OPERA A complete performance of Auber's sparkling opera Le domino noir, plus highlights from another Auber opera, Fra Diavolo. Performances recorded live in Paris (1950) and Milan (1952) respectively. Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) produced a series of thirty-six operas, all in collaboration with the famous librettist Eugène Scribe, who also provided texts for Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and more. Le domino noir ("The Black Mask") was one of the most successful of Auber's many operas. First given on December 2, 1837 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, it ran for some 1,000 performances until 1882, and is still revived often in France. Fra Diavolo ("Brother Devil") is perhaps his best-known work today, and its famous Romance favorite, often known in English as "On Yonder Rock Reclining," has long been a popular French encore. Janine Micheau was the most famous soprano in France in the immediate post-World War II era, in both lyric and coloratura roles. She had equally successful careers in opera and on the recital stage, starring at the Paris Opéra particularly in the role of Mélisande in Debussy's opera. Among the many interesting artists in these performances is Giuseppe Campora, perhaps one of the most underrated tenors of his generation. Campora did not have the vocal weight of a Domingo or Pavarotti, but he was distinguished by elegance of sound and a pure tone of great charm.

Don't let the word "band" put you off. Think of it instead as a wind ensemble. Some very interesting selections here. Some are familiar and some I had never heard before, but all are enjoyable. I have had my copy of the disc for several months and still enjoy listening to it from time to time. Well performed by a fine group of musicians.
