A treat: Grimethorpe pleases once again........1999-12-09
This CD is wonderful. The band once again demonstrates incredible versatility and technical skill along with great arrangements. As a low brass player, I was especially impressed with the euphonium interpretation of Carnival of Venice on the Carnival Cocktail cut. Loved the Riverdance arrangement and always find good circus marches played well to be a real treat (Barnum & Bailey's Favorite, in this case). Other cuts were equally entertaining and satisfying. Great cornet virtuoso work on From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific and a lovely arrangement for tenor horn on The Lark in the Clear Air. A brass band that can be subtle or bold! A brass band that understands dynamics! A brass band that lets you hear more than just the melody line! Note to the band: a CD of KL King and other circus greats would be appreciated. And, being from Maine, USA, more RB Hall marches would go down well. Yes, he was from Maine, but also wrote great marches. Hall's great countermelody style was well interpreted on the Brassed Off CD and the same march, Death or Glory, appears here. How about more?

Ultimate Weber: And Not Andrew Lloyd Webber!.......2005-09-24
Carl Maria Von Weber would himself enjoy this collection of his most famous and brilliant compositions. Released on the Phillips label, this 2 disc cd contains music of a composer who was largely considered to be the first composer of German Romantic opera in the 19th century which would quickly become the vogue of influential composers such as the young Richard Wagner. Von Weber (pronounced "Von-Vay-bur") lived and composed at the time of Beethoven, though the two probably never crossed paths and Von Weber outlived Beethoven by a couple of years. The post-classical, early Romantic style of music which was prevalent at the time is clearly stamped into this beautiful music. This cd is the best introduction to his music and if you're already a fan, it is a supremely delightful collection.
The disc begins with three overtures to Weber's Romantic operas, which were trend-setters at the time: his most famous work, Die Freischutz, Oberon and Euryanthe. These energetic and musically perfected overtures are conducted by the remarkable conductor, Antal Dorati and his Concertgebuow Orchestra of Amsterdam. Invitation to the Dance, one of Weber's popular piece, is conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras and the London Symphony Orchestra. Nikit Magaloff is the solo pianist in the Konzert in F with Sir Colin Davis conducting. This is a truly breathtaking piano concerto one unlike I've ever heard. It is not quite Beethovenesque, nor Mozartian, but it is compelling and maintains a very elegant charm all the way. His First Symphony is on here, and sounds excellent. Also here is the rare opera Abu Hasan Overture as well as music Weber wrote for Clarinet. All in all this is a fine collection of his most beautiful and popular music.
Impressed Clarinet Student.......2000-02-04
I recently played the Weber Concerto 1 in a competition and bought the recording to help me with it. Weber is an incredible composer and I have found this CD to be inspiring and entertaining! It's a great set.

Customer Reviews:
Kubelik and the Bavarians are a great match.......2007-07-01
Rafael Kubelik recorded with many orchestras. As a matter of fact, his set of Beethoven symphonies has 9 different orchestras. His longest tenure with any single orchestra was with the Bavarian Radio Symphony (Munich). He had a very special relationship with this orchestra. There is an enormous amount of warmth in the Weber overtures performed here but there is also plenty of brilliance, especially in Oberon. If you do not have a CD of Weber overtures, this is the set to buy, especially at the budget price.
Kubelik in top form!.......2006-02-13
In the Sixties this set of Overtures meant a true success. Weber 's Overtures still maintain a low profile among the great audiences. From time to time, you may listen Furtive hunter or Oberon, but hardly jezebel, Preciosa pr Abu Hassan , for instance.
The happy conjunction of Kubelik and this notable orchestra was extremely fruitful: I still hear this set on LP and I still enjoy them. Go for this rewarding album.
Brilliant Budget Buy.......2005-03-12
Don't you just love it when classic recordings get reissued on CD at a budget price?! Such is the case with this title in the "Universal Classics" series featuring Weber Overtures and the Clarinet Concerto No. 1, originally made in the mid 1960s for Deutsche Grammophon. I fell in love with conductor Rafael Kubelik years ago after being introduced to his recordings of Dvorak, and he produces the same glowing results here. Of course performing with his beloved Bavarian RSO on the Overtures, and the Berlin Philharmonic, with soloist Karl Leister on the Concerto, ensures performances of the highest quality. With classical budget lines beginning to inexplicably disappear (like Sony's "Essential Classics" series -- what's up with that?!), I'm delighted that UNI has made these great recordings available again at such an inexpensive price.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent stuff........2005-03-24
This disc served as my introduction to Weber's music OTHER than Der Freischutz (I already had the complete recording of Freischutz before I found this one). The Hanover Band sounds absolutely stunning, very resonant even on period instruments. It's really breathtaking to hear this music the way it would've sounded to Weber's ears in the 1820's. The brass tuttis are stellar...if you don't like bass trombone, you may become a little annoyed with this recording because it constantly has lots of prescence when it has any part at all. I don't mind this, as I love the instrument.
If you are a horn player, like me, and/or have any interest in handhorn, this recording is a must for the Concertino. I've never heard natural horn sound so good. The horn openings of the Oberon and Freischutz Overtures sound amazing on the period instruments. You'll be amazed how open the brass sound is on the chorale-style section in Ruler of the Spirits...it can make you wish the valve was never invented.
I didn't really care for the symphonies...if you like Schubert's symphonies, you will probably enjoy them. Weber's music had a huge impact on the musical world, almost pointing a straight arrow to Wagner. If you listen closely to the Overture to Oberon, you can hear the similarity to many parts of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream. (same plot line, after all). In my opinion, this is great music played very capably by a great ensemble. For the quality of the Overtures and Concertino alone, this disc is a bargain.
Vital and Esprit.......2002-11-15
The orchestral colours are excitingly recorded, especially the brass is pretty dramatic.
Thanks to the period instruments with Goodman as conductor one can hear the demonic power and richness of sonority of Weber's beautiful music.
I compared quite a lot of other recordings and must say that this one is my favourite.

So much great music on these discs, so little time! Wonderful to hear the Medea excerpt sung by someone other than Callas (though I am a big fan). And sung magnificently to boot. Bravo!

Unique, fascinating, instructive, rare........2005-10-18
I gave this issue 5 stars for its intrepidity, interest and technical excellence.
14 rare Parlophones recorded by Fritzi JOKL (1895-1974) between 1924 AND 1928, with, to fill out the CD, 4 even rarer disks by Maria GERHART (1896-1975).
Both were Viennese Hochkoloratur types, with all that that implies in high-placed purity, daintily floated Kopftöne and slightly sharp intonation.
Jokl made her debut, shortly before the Great War, at the Frankfurt Opera, where she stayed for five years. She was first given all the boy rôles, but soon took over Rosina, Cherubino, Oscar, Urbain, Blöndchen and Sophie. Her Sophie was particularly admired. Within a short time she became one of the most promising young singers in Germany. She spent two seasons at the Opera of Darmstadt and two at the Volksoper Berlin, where she appeared as Konstanze, Norina and Violetta. She then became a special favorite of the audience in Cologne. A guest appearance took her to Covent Garden, where she sang Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos, then Zerbinetta (as an understudy to Maria Ivogün). She was then invited to the Munich, where she gained a remarkable success as Zerbinetta, the performance conducted by the composer himself. She was immediately engaged for the Munich Festival, marking up a series of triumphs. Under Knappertsbusch she sang Susanna and Despina. Her repertory further included Gilda, Nedda, Olympia, Marzelline and Rosalinde. She took part in a revival of Flotow's rarely performed Alessandro Stradella. Karl Böhm was her conductor in many performances.
In 1932 Fritzi Jokl was invited by Otto Klemperer to join the Kroll Oper in Berlin, but political changes then set in. Klemperer had to leave and the soprano was not allowed to begin her engagement. A few special theatres continued to be allowed to accept Jewish artists and audiences (Jüdischer Kulturbund), but later even this was halted and in 1936 Jokl was forced to leave Germany. She emigrated to the United States and there was happily married to the author and journalist Jack Siegel, but, at 40+, had little chance to continue her singing career. At the Metropolitan, Fritzi Jokl's rôles were the property of Lily Pons and Bidú Sayão, and the management was not willing to take her under contract. Her voice was thereafter heard only in private circles, as well as from these very elusive Parlophones now re-mastered by Preiser.
Gerhart also had an appreciable, mostly Viennese career, and then taught at the Vienna academy for many years.
All this items are excellent, perhaps the most interesting historically being Gerhart's two-sided rendition of the original 1912 version of Zerbinetta's hair-raising rondò. It, like the Weber sides, shows a well-schooled, old-fashioned central-European artist of lovely, silvery tone. Gerhart's delicate, elegiac Caro nome is a classic of her school.
Jokl is more theatrical and her voice more interesting, both timbrally and musically. She was an elegant Mozart singer of the post-Mahler sort, and has the right style for Meyerbeer: not as brilliant as a Tetrazzini or a Kurtz, but rhythmically piquant and full of charm. She holds her own as a contemporary of Ivogün and Hüni-Mihatschek.
I was delighted to have these souvenirs of such lovely singers. Gone, but, thanks to Preiser, not wholly forgotten.

"Weber's final epitaph must be, however, that he made German opera respectable".......2007-05-26
This is the estimation the authors of Men of Music: Their Lives, Times and Achievements chose to give Weber. It's hardly disputable in the scope of music history, but it's obviously still an understatement. While the authors of this composer lexicon insult Weber's piano music, they at least acknowledge that "very little is done, nowadays, to disabuse us of the idea that Weber wrote three overtures, a piano concerto, a notable salon piece - and nothing more." Although Weber's Overtures have been recorded well enough, this is the first volume that aspires to capture all ten of Weber's extant Overtures as arranged for four hands by the composer himself. And so Alexander Paley returns with the assistance of Brian Zeger to give us another volume in the Weber Piano Music series, a series I thought was concluded with Volume 4!
The Overtures on this recording are lined up so that they almost follow the chronological order of composition. Weber's first two operas of his youth have been lost, so "Peter Schmoll and his Neighbors" is essentially the earliest opera we have of Weber's. Written at the tender age of 15, the Overture is witty, sparkling and brilliant - it's easy to imagine the piano duo smiling as they play this genial Mozartean piece. The Overture to "Rubezahl" is surprisingly beautiful and makes splendid and totally Romantic piano music in its own right. Weber's "Silvana" is believed to be a reworking of his second lost opera, "Das Waldmadchen" and the Overture is a fantastic effort, again crystallized and imbued with new life through the hands of Paley and Zeger. The Overtures to "Abu Hassan" and "Turandot" are characterized by exotic melodies, the first inspired by the Arabian Nights and the other about a Chinese Princess Turandot. Both Overtures are brief excursions (under 4 minutes) but always infectious and dazzling.
Weber's "Preciosa" is of a Spanish flavor but always sounds Classical and the Overture comes from the Mozartean vein. Paley's and Zeger's delivery is unquestionably good, but this music sounds great on the piano anyway. Weber's "Jubilee Overture" is an overture by itself, composed for an occasion and not an opera. The music is fanciful and exuberant stuff, climaxing with an ecstatic "God Save the King" tune. Most notable here is Paley's and Zeger's careful dynamics and resounding virtuosity. The less successful arrangements (not performances) are unfortunately the best Overtures on this recording: "Der Freischutz" and "Oberon." The arrangements are just too weak when compared with Liszt's triumphant transcriptions. For "Der Freischutz" see Liszt at the Opera: Operatic Fantasies, Paraphrases, and Transcriptions, Vol. I (Complete Music for Solo Piano, Vol. 6) and for the "Oberon" Overture: Liszt at the Opera III. The quality of music and the energy behind this piano duo must be considered, though, and thus Weber's Overtures still shine as four hand arrangements. For sonority and grandeur, I still implore the curious to get Leslie Howard's recording of Liszt's transcriptions.
Bottom line: This is a wonderful addition to the Weber Piano Music series. Besides "Der Freischutz," "Euryanthe" and "Oberon," we rarely hear any of Weber's other resplendent Overtures even in concert. Doubly rare is to actually hear a piano arrangement of them. Needless to say, the piano duo is coordinated and enthusiastic, conveying all the operatic drama and exceptional melodic content of the orchestral Overtures.

A Great Effort!.......2002-11-18
This is a great CD. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the music selection gets a little boring. I think that if they would have mixed it up a little more putting the quicker tempo piece in the middle of the CD, it could hold my attention a little better all the way through.
The playing on this CD is first rate. This is by for one of the best ensembles in the world today. They play the best music, and they play amazingly well. If you are a brass ensemble enthusiast, I highly recommend the CD.
