Great Voices of the 1920s in Opera and Operetta........2001-12-30

The Nimbus method of reprocessing historical recordings is particularly kind to singers who recorded by the acoustic process, before the advent of electric recording in 1925. In this third issue of their "Golden Age of Singing" series, Nimbus Records cover the years 1920-1930. About a dozen recordings from the pre-electric era are found here, including items by Galli-Curci and de Luca who featured in the second issue in this series. Other singers featuring again in this third series include Lotte Lehmann and Giovanni Martinelli, heard here in 1927 recordings.

Whatever criteria you use to assess anthologies of great singers, you will probably be well satisfied with this splendid issue. If you collect the works of particular singers, you will find not only representative but also rare items. I count the Pinza item as both. It shows him at his best, and has hitherto not found its ways into my CD collection. Occasionally items are not sung in their original language. Frida Leider's "Don Giovanni" aria sung in German in 1922 is preferred to her 1927 remake sung in Italian. Hina Spani sings Elsa's Dream in Italian. Some singers are recorded at the very end of their careers. Scottish soprano Mary Garden, Debussy's first Melisande, is heard in 1927 at her last recording session. Representing a miracle of good singing and longevity is Lucien Fugère recording a Gluck aria in 1928 at the age of 80. Tauber is heard near the beginning of his career in 1923. Youngest of all is the German baritone Gerhard Hüsch, aged 27.

I doubt that many who are considering purchase, every heard any of these singers. I happen to have heard two of them, when a very young man - Ninon Vallin and Elisabeth Schumann. To those who collect great voices on record, whether ever heard in performance or not, I restate that these Nimbus anthologies offer recreations of acoustic recordings that are well worth considering.

The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

It would be hard to imagine a better souvenir of a singer than this! Unfortunately, WW2 kept the fine Viennese singer Erich Kunz (1909-1999) out of recording studios for all but the last 10 years of his career. During those busy ten years, however, he featured in many complete opera and operetta recordings, produced mainly by Walter Legge, while maintaining a busy performing schedule. I recall seeing him night after night in Vienna, and also in Germany in "Die Meistersinger". A slight and trim figure, he exuded so much charm and comic talent across the footlights that the beauty of his velvety baritone voice and his innate musicality tended to pass me by.

Thanks to recordings however, and especially in the case of this Testament CD, his singing can be treasured forever. The Mozart opera excerpts suited his voice like a glove. Notice too, that there is a hitherto unpublished duet here with the adorable Irmgard Seefried. There's plenty of operetta items, some borrowed from the tenor parts but none the worse for that. And there's a selection of the schmalzty Viennese songs he recorded with a small Viennese instrumental ensemble accompanying.

Charming and Bewitching!.......1999-05-23

I just love this CD! Erich Kunz was, along with Fritz Kreisler, the personification of the Old Vienna. His Figaro, Leporello, and Papageno arias are incomparable. He also sings one Don Giovanni's aria with Seefried as well (and how warm and seductive he was as Don!). J. Strauss arias are sung with melting Viennese charm, well supported by equally sensitive and charming orchestra. The Viennese songs are sung sweetly and with fatherly warmth. The Schrammel ensemble that accompanies Kunz is also excellent and has full of atmosphere. Transfer is well done overall, except I seem to hear some gradual rising of pitch in some of the Viennese songs. But that is just a small flaw. The singing is exquisite, and that is all it matters.

Lortzing's operas are mystifyingly difficult to find these days, and even when available they seem to be haphazardly constructed. This edition features the libretto only in German (particularly annoying considering the number of comic moments), although notes and synopsis are in English.

I'm not going to quibble over the individual performances, although it sounded solid enough to me. For the most part, I'm just pleased to have an opera that shares so much with the work of Weber and Marschner. As much as I love Der Freischutz, which is of course widely available, and Der Vampyr & Hans Heiling (also somewhat tricky to find these days), it's good to see that an entirely worthwhile opera by a composer of a similar creative vision is finally appearing on CD in America. If you like the German Romantic composers, this is a splendid example of the genre, in spite of the shortcomings in presentation.

Pearl's second "Golden Operetta" CD can be welcomed and enjoyed on all counts. Firstly, the selection included several rarities which collectors are unlikely to own already. I wonder how many listeners have encountered the Hartman items sung by Aksel Schiotz, or would expect to hear Lauri-Volpi singing "The Legend of Kleinsack" (incidentally is "The Tales of Hoffmann" an operetta?). Secondly, the singers to be heard include some who excelled outside the golden operetta repertoire in both opera and lieder. This is a generous selection, too: 18 items totalling 74 minutes in all.

There can be no doubt about the beautiful and beautifully sustained quality of Thomas Quasthoff's voice. It strikes one immediately with a cello-like smoothness. I first heard Herr Quasthoff singing Lieder, and knew instantly that he was a master, one of the few who is gifted not only with a voice but also with, thank God, musical intelligence.

When he applies that intelligence to arias, he gives an intimate and very effective lustre to the vocal line. Even with arias one has heard many times before, an immediacy comes through. I felt as though I were hearing the Weber and the Wagner for the first time - that same joy in the newness and wonder of such superb music alighted on me.

With the Lortzing, I feel the official review above is unfair. They were delightful to listen to, and Lortzing is sufficiently able as a composer to produce works of worth and originality. One may not - one does not - put him into the same rank as Beethoven, Weber, Wagner, etc. - but then we are speaking of giants of the Romantic period. Between genius and mere competence lies a HUGE field, and Lortzing is well into the plus side of that field. That Thomas Quasthoff sings the Lortzing arias magnificently, one takes for granted.

I am happy to place Quasthoff into the same category of "must-have" baritone/bass-baritone singers as Fischer-Dieskau, Olaf Bär, Bryn Terfel (although Terfel is not quite the word-painter that the others are), and so on. We are blessed at the moment with several extremely good male Lieder singers, and Quasthoff is most definitely one of them. I am busily searching for all of his recordings.

I found the album delightful, and thoroughly recommend it.

Supreme Mastery!.......2003-02-07

Once in a long while an artist comes along whose natural gift and mastery of the music is so enormous, that each one of their recordings is a revelation. This is the case with Thomas Quasthoff. Ever since I listened to his CD of Mozart arias, I am in complete awe of his talent, his virtuosity, and his absolutely gorgeous voice.
What we have on this CD is a combination of two talents of cosmic proportions. Quasthoff and conductor Christian Thielemann bring us some of the most fascinating music ever written with ardor and determination of discoverers. Of particular interest are arias by Albert Lortzing. What one might have dismissed as lighter works (Zar und Zimmermann) had anyone else performed it, is transformed into a sparkling and delightful set of arias, emphasizing the artists' keen sense of humor.
Luckily, most of us are familiar enough with Tannhauser, so we don't have to look at the handy translation booklet to appreciate the beauty of the "Evening Star". If you listen to the same aria sang by Bryn Terfel on his CD with James Levine, you'll have two very different and very beautiful renditions; Terfel's soulful, reflective, yet very much in charge, and Quasthoff's ethereal, mystical one.
What impressed me about this entire recital, is gentle, unobtrusive, yet very much imaginative support of Thielemann's orchestra here. There's a beautiful dialogue happening, particularly between the low strings and Quasthoff's surprisingly bright bass-baritone in "Gar viel und schon ward hier in dieser Halle".
It's difficult to convey even 1% of the music's beauty in a couple of paragraphs. Get it immediately and find out for yourself.

Seven overtures from the first half of the nineteenth century and one (Humperdinck's 'Königskinder') from half a century later is the programme of this 1988 CD from Bratislava in Slovakia. The first three, all by Carl Maria von Weber, are, for me, by far the most interesting. Their evocative horns and their conjuring up of mystery, hunting scenes and the world of the fairies ('Oberon') is both musically convincing and at the same time a demonstration of how far music had progressed in the quarter of a century since the all too early death of Mozart. The overtures by Marschner, Nicolai and Lortzing are all entertaining in their way and contain more or less obvious reminiscences of Weber's work; the Humperdinck seems a little out of place and has a definitely more 'modern' feeling about it.

Alfred Walter and the CSR Symphony Orchestra give a fairly spirited performance, in which the strings sometimes sound a little overstretched. I have owned this CD for some years now, but it was only after I obtained my present hifi equipment that I began to hear the quality of this music: the recorded sound is not brilliant (the listener being some way from the 'stage') and benefits no end from a powerful, audiophile amplifier. It would be interesting to hear this music in historical performance practice on period instruments.
