A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

I bought this cd in 1982 when it was first released at a much higher price. It quickly became one of the family's favorite recordings. It's Mozart at his most social and a mature and self-assured Sir Neville giving an energetic and upbeat interpretation of these works.

Sumi Jo's voice is so purely beautiful; she is my favorite soprano when it comes to singing Mozart, especially Queen of the Night. Hands down, she owns that aria. Her technical ability is perfect as she breathes song, and the beauty of what you hear is touching in such wonderful clarity. My review can only fall short in my humble attempt to convey to you why you need to hear her voice. The music she produces transcends the earthly. It is dazzling beyond words.

Sumi Jo's Mozart recital is superb, especially after hearing other contemporary divas try the same thing. You will not hear any of R Fleming's cloying mannerisms here covering up crummy technique nor will you have to endure the Miss Piggy trills of Bartoli scooping for notes well beyond her vocal range. Buy this and go to heaven.

I've no doubt that Sumi Jo is the most talented, technically polished coloratura soprano of our time. Her trills, runs, sustained pieces, and ornaments of various nature, are most likely what Mozart heard in his head when composing the arias... Absolute perfection.

Everything she sings is the epitome of what a soprano sets as her ultimate goal. If one looked up "Perfect Coloratura" they would automatically be transferred to Sumi Jo...she is faultless.

The only thing which could ever be criticized is her timbre...as that is a matter of personal taste. Otherwise, she is the Einstien of Opera, the the Monet of Sopranos...she is impeccable, she is talent itself. To sum it up... I had to use my Thesaurus to find enough superfulous, descriptive words to describe her superior singing...Brava Sumi Jo~

Not much more to say than has already been said. Her version of "Vorrei spiegarvi, o Dio" is simply the best you will ever here. Battle and Bartoli are also excellent but Sumi's haunting vocals are unbelievable.

Music To Drive To Work With.......2005-09-25

Yet another title in the Set Your Life To Music with the featured composer being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the definative composer of truly "Classical" music ( 1770's-1790's). The music here is a bubbly, sprightly collection of fast-paced mostly allegro movements from Mozart's instrumental repertoire. Feauted on here are such noted Mozartian interpretors as Mozart's champion conductor Sir Neville Marriner and his Academy of St Martin-in-the Fields. Also, Sir Colin Davis, Jeffrey Tate and John Elliot Gardener. Sir Colin Davis conducts the opening track, which is the rarely played and obscure Impresario Overture, one of Mozart's early and lesser known operas. The Divertimento in D follows, and is bright and cheery. The Horn Concerto No. 2 in E Flat is played sans conductor and by the St. Paul Chamber Ochestra with Hermann Baumann and the more famous violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The Serenade in D is played Prestissimo, which means extremely fast and is delightful to hear, definately a way to keep you feeling good as you drive in your morning commute to work. None of this music is slow or boring. There is never a dull moment where Mozart's music is concerned. The Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra is a joyful riot of strings.

The Symphony No. 33 and 34 are also on here, and are played to perfect swift pace by the English Baroque Soloists, as conducted by John Elliot Gardener. The "Haffner" Serenade is gorgeous and the allegro portions burst with energetic passion. I can't say enough good things about the Piano Concerto No. 10 for Two Pianos. It is a fun piece, which is danceable even, and exuberant in its mood. All the music here is certainly perfect for driving to work - in a great mood!

The selections here contain fast, allegro movements that are sure to speed your way to work and make you feel good about it. It is also a perfect party cd. The Sinfonia concertante is highly recommendable, so is the Impresario Overture and the Concerto for 2 Pianos. The Serenades "Haffner ", the allegro movements to some of the symphonies are all here. In these brilliant works of music, we feel as if we were at a party. The strings interact with one another as in a lively conversation. These works are superb and I highly recommend this cd to any Mozart fan, any classical fan, and just anyone who wants to enjoy the exuberance of lively music. Salzburg and Vienna societies of Mozar'ts time enjoyed parties.. as did Mozart. He would frequently party at late night hours.. dancing to the popular Landler and German Dances "Contradance". If you enjoy these, you will want to look for the Divertimentos, the German Dances and other such dance music of Mozart. A good collection can be found in the cd title "Mozart for your Modem "- a party atmosphere meant to accompany a computer user. And "Mozart for your Work Out " "Eine Kleine Natmusik ", Posthorn and "The Sleighride". These are all garaunteed to satisfy the party animal Mozartian in all of us.

A great album to "speed you on your way" as the producers state. Definitly makes car time an event worth looking forward to! My family and I highly recommend this Mozart masterpiece.

Brilliant elegant performances by Marriner and ASMF.......2006-02-05

I've had this disc for about 15 years now, but haven't listened to it in many moons. I've heard several other versions of these Mozart overtures, but none that I enjoy like this particular one with the ASMF conducted by Sir Neville Marriner. I think the sound quality is very good and weighty, just like I like it. Marriner almost always knows what he's doing, because he's the utmost professional. In short, this may be one of the best performances ever of the Mozart Overtures. Buy it used here on Amazon for just $1.60 in like new condition. That's the ultimate bargain of bargains.

Excellent big band Mozart.......2007-02-23

Among the many large orchestra versions of these Mozart favorites, this compilation certainly ranks at the top. I think I might on some days of the week give the slimmest edge to Beecham over Walter's Mozart with the late symphonies (Royal Phil. Orch. mono set), but here Bruno Walter works his magic once again with the overtures and incidental music. In general Walter has long been a favorite for the way he invariably sought to bring out the beauty in the music, as opposed, say, to Klemperer's decided objectivity, or to Karajan's perfect technique and elegant sound. Since these are my three favorite conductors, I say these things in their favor. With Walter one cannot go wrong, or put another way, his version of works of the Romantic repertoire is arguably as good as anyone's, anytime, anywhere. By the way, I would only give a smaller ensemble version the fifth star, because the big band still doesn't quite work, as enjoyable as it is.

Great Track Selections, Great Performances, Too Bad About the Sound!.......2006-06-05

There is no doubt that the track selections of overtures plus the famous Nachtmuzik have rarely been performed at such a high standard and yet I'm left very disappointed at the poor sound quality of this AAD recording. I hope Sony gets their act together soon and re-release the entire "Great Performances" series fully remastered from the best possible source tapes in the vaults and as a plus, package them all in mini-lp sleeve replicas. My advice is to wait for better sounding versions to be released as I have heard rumours that Sony are indeed looking into it.

The Best Night Music Ever.......2006-03-25

This Mozart compilation CD has been at the top of my playing list for over 20 years. Walter and the Columbia SO give vibrant performances to Night Music along with various overtures. The sound is excellent, and no other CD of these works comes close. This is part of the old Columbia records 'Great Performances' line, and surprisingly seems to have remained in the catalog. The GP series is being resurrected with new releases by Sony, so hopefully this release will remain available, or at least be reissued.
If you like classical music at all, this is an 'must have' CD. I also recommend the Bohm/Berlin Phil Mozart 2CD set with some other Serenades along with Night Music, if you want to explore further[DG 453076].

The radiant light after the shadows!.......2005-12-01

Bruno Walter was a remarkable conductor of Mahler. This brief introduction is important to remark because, every time Walter conducted Mozart, it can be felt how the elements of candor, charm, presence and warmth of the Austrian surrounding is felt far beyond the score.

Walter illuminates the bars with that refulgent brightness and touch of humanity, in this sense his Mozart is deeply contemporanean and above all human. He literally, transports us (as Gould playng Bach)to the essential core of the lyric musculature and eloquent expression.

In this sense I want to recommend you this admirable and triumphal set of Overtures with the complement of the most renowned of Mozart' s Serenades; his Kleine Nachtmusik, surpassed only by Sandor Vegh and Ferenc Fricsay in what it concerns to lyrical purity and sublime expression.

Go for this CD without any doubt.

A Little Night Music.......2001-06-15

This is a nice overview of some of Mozart's better-known pieces, the kind of recording everyone should have in their collection. Don't stop here though: at the very least, find copies of the complete "Marriage of Figaro" and "Magic Flute."

Mozart's The Impresario is the one-act singspiel about squabbling sopranos whose trifling nature leads audiences to assume it must be an early work. In fact, it's a mature score, written alongside The Marriage of Figaro. This recording, done with period forces, has a light, clean elegance with neither the rhythmic energy of, say, an Eliot Gardiner reading nor the vocal beauty of the (out-of-print) classic John Pritchard recording for Decca (which had Kiri te Kanawa and Edita Gruberová as the divas). Cynthia Sieden and Sharon Baker, however, make well-balanced rivals in the lead roles. Bright and agile, they're equipped for the high-flying coloratura Mozart puts their way.

There is, alas, no evidence that Mozart put anything in the way of The Beneficent Dervish, and it shows in a score that offers not too much beyond period charm. But it's of interest as one of the musical pantomimes devised by Schikaneder just before The Magic Flute (another was The Philosopher's Stone, to which Mozart almost certainly did contribute). And dramatically, if not musically, it has so much in common with Flute that it almost qualifies as a preliminary sketch. This is the premiere recording, and it's neatly put together by Boston Baroque, one of the most respected ensembles of its kind in North America. The spangled exuberance of the writing--whoever did it--comes over with relish. And the elegant, scaled-down performances of singers like John Aler and (again) Sharon Baker make the whole thing pleasant enough--although you may not want to hear it twice. --Michael White

Brilliant!.......2004-01-22

As a Mozart fanatic I have 140 CDs of his compositions alone --making up nearly his entire catalogue. The Impresario is, indeed, a fine piece, but is dwarfed musically by The Beneficent Dervish. As the premiere recording of the latter, the Boston Baroque sets a high standard for all future recordings! The other reviewers are correct in saying that the Beneficent Dervish acts as almost a sketch preceding The Magic Flute, and it is evident in the brilliantly playful compositional style. The Beneficent Dervish is a must have CD for any connoisseur of Mozart or Classical period Opera!

Good recording, but rather unclimatic music per se........2003-06-28

If you're used to listening to Mozart, you wouldn't be surprised when I tell you that this is one of his less dazzling works. (As compared to Requiem, etc.) The music on this cd is a very good recording, but the music never goes to the same places that some of his other works do. Compared to Tchaikovsky, this is much less fantastical, but much less regimentalized than Beethoven. It's some good middle-of-the-road classical music worthy for the collector, but not for someone looking for widely recognizable classical.

Excellent music, Excellent Performance.......2002-06-07

I like "The Impresario" but what impressed me the most is "The Beneficent Dervish". It has the touch of Mozart, maybe a little too similar to "Abduction from the Seraglio", but... it is concise,rich and colorful, with lots of Turkish "Janissary" music scattered all around. I am surprised that it is not well known; I have never heard it before! If you like the music of "Abduction from the Seraglio", you will love this album.

Full of Joie-de-vivre.......2004-12-14

This 1988 Naxos recording is one of a Mozart series that Barry Wordsworth made with the Capella Istropolitana. And as with the symphonies, these overtures have a lot going for them. The playing is fresh and full of joie-de-vivre, the sound is (despite the echoey Concert Hall in Bratislava, Slovakia) perfectly acceptable, and the notes are helpful. Particularly praiseworthy of course is the decision to record Mozart's early overtures and to put them in chronological order, thus giving a context to the better-known opera introductions, which are here recorded successfully and with great gusto. Perhaps this is not quite up to the standard of some of the leading period instrument ensembles (e. g. Tafelmusik on Sony), but for a budget CD it is a remarkably good effort.

This is a wonderful collection of overtures for any collector of Mozart. It is especially good for newcomers to classical music of which I am one. Overtures are among my favorites because they are always lively and exciting. The orchestra does an admirable job of interpreting Mozart.
