Great Teaching Tool.......2007-05-29
The pieces on this disc represent some of the more intersting and dynamc overtures, very suitable for music appreciation classes to point out use of classics and neo-classical music in contemporary culture
Donna Diana.......2005-07-28
This CD has a nice mix of the familiar and unfamiliar --- but all are upbeat and fun to listen to. Well worth the price.
William Tell & Other Favorite Overtures.......2002-09-10
Suppe's Light Calvary and Poet and Peasant Overtures were absolutely grand, as were Daniel-Francois Auber's Fra Diavolo, Herold's Zampa, Reznicek's Donna Diana, Offenbachs Orpheus in the Underworld, and the magnificent William Tell Overture by Rossini. One word of caution: this CD will really test your stereo, the bass actually thunders, and will blow your socks off. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Orchestra did a fine job, I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves the thunderous music of an orchestra, you cannot go wrong buying this CD, I love it on the car stereo and at home.
Blockbuster demo disk!.......2000-09-22
The Telarc label does it again. This is the perfect disk for showing off your sound system. Great recordings and great selection of overtures. I've been listening to this CD for about 15 years now and the Orpheus in the Underworld track still sends chills up my spine.
Fantastic!.......2000-05-26
Couldn't ask for anything more from a CD full of famous overtures. Kunzel and co. rock my world yet again.

Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24
This set is extremely valuable, not only as an overview of Dame Joans career but because it contains three complete LP sets that have been very hard to find. The sets are the 2 LP French opera (operetta) set, the Mozart album and the Wagner album. Although some of these do not show her to her best advantage (the Wagner set) they all have some very beautiful things and the French items are superb. The annotations and photos are interesting as well and there are some piano songs with Bonynge that are released here for the first time along with a scene from a live Covent Garden Norma.
Rareties available on CD at last!.......2006-03-29
While Joan Sutherland has recorded a number of impressive aria collections throughout the many years of her recording career, they tend to get lost in the shuffle of the countless reissues Decca/London has endlessly repackaged. While some of the original collections have appeared intact on CD--"The Art of the Prima Donna," "The Age of Bel Canto," "Love Live Forever" (her operetta collection that was originally titled "The Golden Age of Operetta"), to name a few--others are currently represented in the CD catalogue by only a few selections on discs that also include excerpts from complete opera recordings or duplicates of selections from other original collections. As a result, it has been impossible to assemble a CD collection of her recordings without a LOT of duplication, and some of the most interesting collections are still unavailable (e.g. "Command Performance" and "Serate Musicale").
While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.
I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.
Heavenly.......2006-01-31
I first heard of Dame Sutherland while on the internet while listening to a internet radio station. I was instantly a fan, her control, technique, and tone is perfectly executed and rivals the equally fantastic Maria Callas. She has a powerful voice and presence that will evoke every emotion from her listeners. Highly recommended to all Opera Diva fans.
WHO ELSE CAN SING LIKE THIS TODAY?.......2005-04-10
This is Decca's second multi disc evaluation of this fantastic singer's long career and many recordings. True that a lot on the first set is duplicated here, but there are a few exceptions here and there that make it a worthy addition. Of particular interest are the very early items of Handel and Italian baroque arias, some forgotten song recordings and a live performance of the duet from Norma. It can't be said too many times - who can sing like this today? For sheer vocalism it's hard to find anyone on the same wavelength. This set will give very young opera goers an idea of what they missed.

It is a gem........2007-06-27
This is one of the best CD I have ever had. Thank the Detroit Symphony Orchestra who provided us with such a wonderful entertaiment.
A spectacular SACD reinvention but perhaps a tad expensive.......2006-05-16
Here is the reinvented SACD version of Paul Paray's collection of overtures by Suppe and Auber that the new Penguin Guide listed as one of the 100 most captivating recordings now available to the public.
The playing by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is virtuosic almost to a fault in this recording, with a string tone and sheen that transcends what people normally heard in Detroit's Orchestra Hall in the late 1950s (site of the Auber overtures; the Suppe overtures were recorded at Detroit Cass Tech High School, same venue as the magnificent Paray/DSO Berlioz "Fantastique" Symphony from 1959.)
I live in Michigan and heard the DSO both in horrid Ford Auditorium and Old Orchestra Hall (and "new" Orchestra Hall) and I never heard the orchestra sound this good. Perhaps this is one of the advantages of DSD streaming in the SACD process, that the band actually sounds better than it did in reality?
The music on this collection consists of high spirited overtures, most less than 7 minutes duration, given all out guns blazing hell bent for leather interpretations by the flamboyant Frenchman and his orchestra. Performances of "The Beautiful Galatea" and "Poet and Peasant" overtures, in particular, silence any possible criticism. The Penguin Guide went overboard on the lesser known Auber overtures, saying they would never again be performed as well as they are here.
Whether that's true or not, this CD is a marvelous collection of exciting music in an excellent three-channel recording (no surround sound as is typical for Mercury). This collection will get you humming, tapping your toe, and coming out of your chair as soon as you light this candle in your living room, where the sound will fill your venue, however cavernous it may be.
My only complaint is the $19 list price seems excessive for a nearly half-century old reissue, regardless of the fantastic reproduction in modern SACD sound. This is more expensive than other Mercury Living Presence reissues and more expensive than the Paray-Detroit Berlioz recording I spoke of earlier, which in my view is far more substantial music and done just as well as this.
A list price of $14 would have made this a five star selection. As it is, the music is worth five stars so if you can get it used from an Amazon vendor or new from an Amazon provider for $14, consider yourself the buyer of a five star recording.
Paul Paray/Detroit To The Finish Line..............2005-09-29
If Paul Paray was a race horse, I'd place my bet on him each time to win...and indeed I would. This former conductor of the Detroit Symphony has the "Midas Touch", for everything he touches turns to gold. This SACD of Suppe and Auber Overtures is no exception, and belongs in everyone's musical library. No matter how many other recordings of these warhorse pieces you own...these renditions are essential. Consistently, each Paray/Detroit recording is a gala event. The overtures contained on this SACD are all very familiar to me, and yet it's as though I'm hearing them through a different set of ears. Conductor Paray brings out orchestral nuances like few other conductors can. Each well-known overture is played with energy, finesse, impeccable interpretation, and with extraordinary sound, which is a Mercury Living Presence trademark. Do yourself a favor, anything that Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony have recorded...BUY!!! I have not lost a race yet. Very Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Tauber's latest Naxos CD.......2002-07-18
This is a good selection of the familiar and the not-so-familiar - for example, the Barber of Seville aria is unique, I believe, in the presently available Tauber material on CD (please correct me, with details, if that isn't so). Tauber was highly thought of for his Rossini performances, during his early time at Dresden, and it's helpful for students of singing that some of his Rossini is at last generally available again (even in the sometimes curious sounding german versions).
On the other hand, it's a pity that the second Troubador aria has not also been included, as has been the case in many of the vinyl LP selections previously released of Tauber's recordings. The CD playing time comfortably would have allowed for the inclusion of the suggested item.
Otherwise, this is a most interesting and excellent value-for-money release, for which Naxos is to be well commended; much better value (in terms of playing time and content rarity), in my opinion, than the previous Naxos CD containing some of his non-operatic recordings.
Does anyone have any information, please, as to whether Tauber ever recorded the aria "Oh, Paradise" from Meyerbeer's "The African"? I would be very grateful to have any information on this matter, which has intrigued me ever since I saw the 1948 film, "The Richard Tauber Story", starring Rudolf Schock, who portrayed Tauber singing this aria in the film.

Customer Reviews:
A fabulous vintage recording; this is among the best.......2006-12-06
From beginning to end, this is an excellent disc, perhaps the best of its kind. The 1959 recording is amazing; Mercury has done wonders with the sound. I bought this recording despite the fact that I own all but four of the overtures (Boccaccio & the Auber), and have not regretted it a bit. I had bought Mehta's recording previously, but Paray wins in most every regard. The former seems lackluster when compared to Paray, especially when it comes to The Beautiful Galatea. Pique Dame is also quite a bit more energetic in Paray's version.
As for the others, Light Cavalry is joyously executed, Poet and Peasant the same. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna is neglected far more than it should be. The same goes for Boccaccio: this is one of the two recordings of it available. This is the starting place in this repertoire.
And all this does not even touch on the Auber overtures! Auber's overtures sound almost a cross between Rossini & Suppe at times; yet they are very individual. Curiously, The Bronze Horse is an overture to an oriental opera. Auber does not treat it as such, that is for sure. Fra Diavolo begins with a bit of percussion, then leads into its first piquant melody. Masaniello is a bit more familiar; Johann Strauss's Op. 34 is entitled "Schwarttsche Ball-Tanze," Cotillons on themes from "La muette de Portici" (this is the other name for Masaniello). Give them a listen, all three are fabulous. It is surprising these concert pieces are not more well known.
Overall, this disc is a must for the lover of the overture, or any such music. Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra do the music full justice, as Mercury do to the players. Enjoy.

Paul Paray Brings Rare Overtures To Life.......2005-08-15
This recording, digitally remastered from the old 50's or 60's LP, is more than anything a joyous discovery of rare overtures conducted by an excellent and much admired conductor, the Canadian-born Paul Paray. Paray shaped the Detroit Symphony and since his death in 1979, a conductor of his magnificence has yet to be found for that particular orchestra. Though Paray's home was Montreal, Canada, and he conducted the Montreal forces in his younger days, he became a big name in American conducting. He found a home with the Detroit Symphony and even recorded several fine works of classical music on LP. Many of these- Scheherazade, French Orchestral Music, Carmen Suites and others are on CD and available on Amazon.com.
In this recording, Paray treats us to finely executed overtures by the operetta composer Franz Von Suppe. Suppe was not a big star in his day. His operettas were early Viennese operettas before the more famous Johann Strauss ever staged Die Fledermaus and the dozens of other operettas that followed. Suppe was an Austrian man but very French in his attitude (hence the last name Suppe)and even had French opera-bouffes in his musical styling. Like Offenbach, his operettas were charming, engaging works of fantasy. Consider "The Beautiful Galatea" which is the first track. The Overture is ebullient and energetic, describing the magical forces behind the story which is basically the ancient Greek myth that inspired Pygmalion- an aged inventor who builds the perfect woman. Consider also his "Boccaccio" based on the late Renaissance collection of mildly erotic poetry which read more like the Italian version of the English Canterbury Tales. Boccaccio is amusing, with music expressing adventure and romantic entanglements. The Light Cavalry Overture is actually quite familiar to the trained ear. Its militaristic theme has been used haphazardly in cartoons when a cavalry on horse would appear. His Pique Dame (Queen of Spades) is not the same subject matter as Tchaikovsky's later opera which is far darker opera. Suppe's is charming comedy about a gambling salon. The Poet and the Peasant Overture is festive and brilliantly played, in fact, the best I've heard. Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna foreshadows Strauss waltzes. The album concludes with overtures from an even lesser known composer Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber. Auber was a French composer who wrote early opera-buffes, though most assuredly he was eclipsed by Offenbach and Halevy. His Fra Diavolo and Masaniello Overtures are effectively engaging with their colorful phrasing.
Paul Paray brings life to these overtures, making them appear as if they are not old or obscure at all. He has genuine chemistry with all the musicians in the orchestra and the music is bright, energetic and even a pleasure to hear because it would appear it was a pleasure for Paray and the Detroit forces to make this recording.
Pure, Unrestrained JOY..........2003-02-27
I bought this CD beause I'm working on collecting the Mercury Catalog, and when I bought it, I paid no attention to what the actual pieces were because I had no idea who Suppe was or what his overtures were.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I was surprised upon first listening... Not only is this music the type of music that is inherent to people from its use in background music to cartoons, TV, movies, etc... but it is so very enjoyable because it exhudes an amazing, unadulterated amount of PURE JOY and EXCITEMENT... with no attempt at being high-brow, or overly serious music.
The good news is that even though this music might be considered to be more "common" among classical elitists, Paul Paray treated it as he would any great art. This recording gives you such beautifully refined sound, such truly INCREDIBLE energy and exhuberence, all with stunning precision and control- that you will be sold upon first hearing.
As other reviews mention- there is no need to look at other recordings of these works, because you will mosy likely get a cheap "pops" orchestra recording that treats the music cheaply beacause of its unabashed "happiness" and accesibility. The result is fun, but trite and gets old fast. With this Paray, the energy seems to remain fresh every time you play it. You can't go wrong with this orchestral uplifter to cleanse your palate between your serious Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Mahler symphonies.
So, elitsts... forget your pride and buy these CDs. Fun is not a crime. And, beginners, this is a GREAT way to find how truly fun and emotive classical music can be. Enjoy it.
Nice CD.......2002-08-13
In high school, I played Suppe's "Light Cavalry". So I wanted to get a copy for years but just hadn't bothered. This music recorded on this CD is good quallity (sometimes classical music CD's aren't as good a quality) and the music is very enjoyable. Lovers of classical music or Suppe will enjoy this CD. It is a worthy addition to any music collection.

black comedy rossinian style.......2003-03-30
Fra Diavolo is based on a true character although the plot of
this opera is totally ficticious - it is a black comedy about
a highway robber - the music is rossinian in style with florid
arias and many group ensembles with every singer pattering at
the same time but recitatives are replaced by spoken-dialogues
as is the custom in french opéra-comique. It takes a first-class
cast to pull it off and that is what we get here although most
soloists are in their twillight years. Nicolai Gedda at 58 re-
mains amazingly suave and dexterous as Diavolo - Mady Mesplé
(52) is charmingly girlish and very agile - Jane Berbié (52)
and Rémy Corazza (50) are delighfully funny as an english cou-
ple recently robbed - the rest of the cast is excellent. It is
well conducted and recorded - it comes on two super-bargain CDs
with a synopsis but no libretto which may be a drawback for non
french-speaking people - otherwise it is highly recommandable.

Customer Reviews:
FASCINATING: DISCOVER A RARELY PLAYED GEM.......2006-11-03
I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. I found this CD extremely enjoyable. These are really abridged versions of both operas: Auber's Fra Diavolo (in italian, originaly in French) and Donizetti's La Figlia del Reggimento (in Italina, though orignal also in French).
First of all, even though "La Figlia" was written originaly in French (Le Fille du Regiment), until 2 or 3 decades ago it was mostly known and played in the Italian version. The French version has been appearing more often since the 60s and 70s, a great example of the French opera comique, a form mastered by Donizetti.
Auber's Fra Diavolo was an amazing discovery for me. Auber was one of the most popular composers in 19th Century Paris. His operas are very lively and beautifully melodic He was a master of the opera comique format, and even of french grand opera (his 'La Muette de Portici' is considered the first well-defined example of the grand opera form). Fra Diavolo can be compared with Rossini's comic operas, only that in a french style. The arias and ensembles are richly melodic and quite interesting. The opera made me a fan of Auber, and made me find out more about his work. I was only familiar with "la Muete" (a serious opera). But he might have been better suited for the "opera comique" format. 'Manon Lescaut', 'Le Domino Noir', 'Le Cheval de Bronze' are just a few examples of his comic operas. They are gems that in recent decades have been rediscovered and good recordings of them do exist (available here on Amazon).
I would really recommend any fan of Rossini, Donizetti and other composers of opera buffa to buy this CD. Do get it, give it a chance. It will introduce you to a new and just as fascinating comic opera form. It is fascinating to notice the influence of Rossini and italian opera buffa in general, but then you can also tell that they are also very french at the same time. Just like me i am sure you will end up being a fan of french oprea comique, and maybe even also exploring other of the opera comic composers, such as Adams, Offenbach, Messager, Boieldieu, Gretty and many more.
Four High C's?.......2006-03-07
If you want a very truncated version of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" sung in Italian (original is in French), with the famous tenor aria, which should contain 9 high C's, cut in half (thus only 4 high C's are sung) then by all means get this two CD set.....but why would you? I wouldn't even call this a highlights CD, as so many of the selections are truncated. Despite some nice singing and orchestral playing, this recording is to be avoided. Not the genuine article. Oh yeah, there also is Auber's "Fra Diavolo" on disc one if you care....I didn't.
