4 out of 5 stars Irish singer-songwriter from the early 70s.......2007-07-24

This eccentric Irish singer-songwriter was a regular visitor to the upper reaches of the UK charts in the early 1970s. Three of these songs made the top ten in the USA: the poignant Claire, Alone Again (Naturally) and Get Down. He specialized in the mid-tempo ballad, although Get Down was a real rocker with a catchy hook. Other UK hits on this compilation include Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day, No Matter How I Try, We Will, Ooh Baby, Nothing Rhymed and I Don't Love You But I Think I Like You. What's In A Kiss was a solitary stray hit from the late 70s when his time had passed. The music is not profound but charming enough with its often clever lyrics and decent tunes.

4 out of 5 stars The only Gilbert O'Sullivan CD You'll Need.......2007-04-02

I will admit upfront that I only knew about 3 Gilbert O'Sullivan songs before I bought this CD -- all from the 1970s. And if you are an American, like me, you probably know the same 3: "Alone Again Naturally," "Claire," and "Get Down." They are all here, along with several songs that were apparently big hits in his native Scotland and other UK territories.

To me, these songs are a bit syrupy, slow, and overdramatic, especially "Alone Again Naturally." Then again, I didn't buy them because I thought they were great music -- I bought them because when I hear them, I am immediately transported to lighter times in my teen years of the 1970s. And, hey, they're not bad songs, either.

In any case, this album has all of that and more at the lowest price I was able to find. His other albums were all over $40, and they don't sell him on iTunes. Note that Amazon lists this as "Currently Unavailable" at the time of this writing. But if you click on Used & New (upper right-hand corner), you'll probably find it. All in all, a good album if you like him, at a decent price.

5 out of 5 stars Great music to rekindle memories of the 70's.......2005-09-01

I've been a Gilbert O'Sullivan fan since I heard for the first time the haunting melody of "Alone, Naturally" back in 1971. He had a succession of hits after that but he seemed to fade after a few hits. Some of the songs here never made it on radio airplay (that I know about) here in the US. For example, "You are you" is such a catchy tune. The lyrics are dated but hey, the music is excellent. "What's in a Kiss" is another one. Great song - similar to "You are you" but never made it on airplay in the US. O'Sullivan presents a knack for writing songs with a universal appeal but retains his Irish charm in his singing style.

Since I was spoiled with the great music of the 70's (greatest decade for music), O'Sullivan is one of the few that stands out for me. Buy this CD and enjoy it for what it is. A fresh and unique singer songwriter that is guaranteed to please even the most discriminating ear!

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC, must-have for O'Sullivan fans .......2006-05-27

Let me begin by saying this: I LOVE Gilbert O'Sullivan. Not like....LOVE. Now, one of the reasons I happen to LOVE O'Sullivan is because of how much he reminds me of Paul McCartney. Because, you see, I LOVE Paul McCartney also. More specifically, I LOVE the Paul McCartney of the Beatles days and his Wings days. With all due respect for the witty reviewer from Tacoma, WA, I have to say that anyone who would even try to suggest that Paul McCartney is put to shame by Gilbert O'Sullivan is missing some of their marbles. You have to have more respect for the "original" than you are showing with your comments. The "original", of course, being McCartney...without whom, Gilbert would not even have had a career. (a fair statement given that Gilbert CLEARLY took after Paul's stylings in his melodic approach...and was successful because of it) If you dis-like McCartney so much, then how on earth can you like Gilbert O'Sullivan? I'm taking a wild guess that you also prefer Badfinger over McCartney? (another artist that owes their career to the former Beatle). While I would agree that the solo McCartney has put out his share of really LAME stuff, the fact remains he has also written COUNTLESS classics...many more than could ever fit onto a SINGLE compilation CD. (I don't need to start listing all of the songs, do I?) Come on, man! If you are going to play "Music Reviewer", at least put things into their proper perspective!!!

Anyway...now that I've gotten that off my chest, if you are in your mid thirties like me, or older...then music like Gilbert O'Sullivan's really takes you back down memory lane. I have nothing but fond memories whenever I hear songs like "Clair" or "Alone Again (Naturally)". As a singer-songwriter myself, I am absolutely blown away at the melodic structure of Gilbert's music...as well as his lyrical style. Some previous reviewer had a shall we say "interesting" interpretation on the meaning behind "Clair". Call me naive, but I really think it's merely an innocent song about an Uncle's sincere doting and love of his neice. (Yes...this type of love still ACTUALLY exists!) Anyway...unfortunately, nobody is making music like this anymore. Maybe that's what makes artists like Gilbert O'Sullivan so timeless.

My final comment is simply this: YIKES!!! What's the deal with that PRICE tag???? OUCH!!! Am I buying a CD or a magazing subscription???

5 out of 5 stars The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!.......2006-01-10

Rhino has once again managed to release an excellent best of compilation. Not only are the 20 tracks here great value for money, they represent the best that Gilbert O'Sullivan has ever done and each track has been mastered brilliantly for a great sound. Amazon yet again has made an error on the track listing as "Christmas Song" although a great song is not on this album but the duet with Peggy Lee, "Can't Think Straight" is.

Gilbert O'Sullivan represents that quirkey, talented, individual who can write great melodies and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that make you smile and even laugh at yourself as you empathise with the characters in his lyrics. I'm sure many of us can at one time or another identify with the individual described in "Alone Again, Naturally" for instance or even thought about the stuff on "Matrimony" while not actually acting upon them and yet nonetheless, having sympathy with the people involved in the lyrics.

All the great ones are here, from "Alone Again..." to "Claire" to "What's in a Kiss" to "Get Down." No weak tracks to talk about as you marvel at the great melodies and lyrics that this guy's able to put together track after track after track. I never get tired of listening to this guy and if you are looking for the best one-disc compilation of Gilbert that's out there, this one is it. Very highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Summer of '72.......2005-12-20

Known as Raymond Edward O'Sullivan to his mother, Gilbert O'Sullivan had one of those careers that gave us a number of memorable hits but unfortunately flamed out when all of his songs started to sound the same. The exception was "Alone Again (Naturally)". It was just one of those songs that grabbed you when you first heard it. It even takes on more meaning over thirty years later when those of us that were around when it was released have lived a lot more of life and can reflect on the song's meaning even better. The other semi memorable little ditties would include "Out of the Question, Clair and Get Down".These are all good little tunes for a trip down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars All the singles, plus What's In A Kiss.......2005-07-25

Collectors rejoice! This CD, unlike some compilations, includes all of O'Sullivan's Top 40 charted songs. The bonus is getting "What's In A Kiss", released by Arista (if memory serves) in the early 80's. Another one of those songs that coulda, woulda, shoulda been bigger.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable.......2005-06-12

By early 70s, I had appreciated O'Sullivan's music around his world successfuly themes "Alone again (naturally)" and "Clair". Finding this collection of songs has revealed to me the best quality of Gilbert O'Sullivan not only as a singer but as composer as well. I founded expectacular "Matrimony" and "At the very mention of your name" and it resulted to me very suggestive some songs that I did not remember like "Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day", "Can't Think Straight" and "What's in a kiss". It is very grateful finding all the songs in original version with a high quality sound and nice cd cover design, which includes a very significative sample of the musical production of this rather ignored rock idol.
For people that like "lost" musical gems, this is a highly recommended compact disk.

2 out of 5 stars The best? I think not........2004-01-11

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

1 out of 5 stars can't understand the words.......2004-01-08

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

I like this album, it includes a wide varity of songs fron the different operas. The sound quality is a bit like a record, which thew me off for a bit. If you like that sound then this is a good recording for, but if you want digital clarity this is not for you.

2 out of 5 stars There are better collections available.......2000-08-03

This is a nice collection of Gilbert and Sullivan work. I would advise however that the sound quality is very poor. I understand that this is an original recording but for the average listener interested in owning a general collection of Gilbert and Sullivan tunes (such as myself) there are better collections available.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must for Savoyards.......2000-03-24

This nostalgic CD contains recordings of singers who actually rehearsed with Gilbert and Sullivan. The beautiful quality of these voices makes me wish I could have seen these wonderful performers on stage. Since this wish is impossible, this CD is the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Almost first generation performances to revel in.......1999-07-07

The performances on this selection of G&S are so numerous and varied that it is difficult to 'pin-point' a preference. But, I would have to choose the rendition by Nellie Briercliffe as Phoebe, in 'Were I thy bride'. The sheer character of the part leaps at you combined with a delicious sense of the humour, to make this performance easily the winner. No other rendition of this music has been equalled. The bonus of the Gondoliers and Pirates of Penzance make for a bargain release. My only quibble is the choice of the electric recording of the 1936 Mikado. A better choice would have been the 1926 recording with Sir Henry Lytton as Ko-Ko. The transfers would require some cosmetic choices to 'clean up' the hisses and other background noises, but it would have been far more interesting and in keeping with the 'Best' of Gilbert and Sullivan performances. As for purchasing this release, I whole-heartedly support you in doing so. Have nostalgic fun!
