Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Alexander Melik-Pashayev offers a superb interpretation of one of Prokofiev's masterpieces, conducting a notable cast that includes Galina Vishnevskaya in her prime. This is a gutsy, full-throated reading, and while the score has been trimmed in places, the portions missing from the Bolshoi's version are mostly panegyrics to the Russian people that owe more of their inspiration to the commissars than to Euterpe--or to Tolstoi. As usual in Melodiya's Soviet-era recordings, the sound itself ranges from mediocre to terrible, and the best efforts of BMG's Western recording engineers to clean it up have been only partially successful. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Amazon.com essential recording

Valery Gergiev's version of this long and involved opera demonstrates one of the benefits of an ensemble system (particularly when the ensemble members have no place else to go). It offers a huge and generally outstanding cast, including the luxe casting of the remarkable Olga Borodina in the minor role of Helene. The Kirov edition is uncut, although the listener may discover that there are often pretty good reasons for traditional excisions. The sound is quite good. Gergiev and company may also be seen and heard in good form in their video presentation of this opera in the stark production by British director Graham Vick. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gergiev is strongest in the "Peace" scenes.......2006-05-27

The two contenders for the best "War and Peace" are this 1993 Gergiev set (on 3 CDs) and Rostropovich's 1989 recording (on 4 CDs) for ERato. The lines seem evenly drawn with the critics. Those who favor Rostropovich (whom the dying Prokofiev entrusted with the opera) like his impassioned conducting and Vishnevskaya's ardent portrayl of Natasha, despite the fact that she was twenty years too old for the part. Those who favor Gergiev point to the evenness of his singing cast and the psychological refinement of each character. I can accept both viewpoints. If you have the resources, you might buy the Gergiev for the "Peace" scenes in the drawing rooms and ballrooms, the Rostropovich for the "War" scenes that occupy the second half of the opera. In that regard Gergiev has the advantage of better music, since Prokofiev originally intended to portray only the personal, romantic parts of the novel. War came as an afterthought when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union.

The work itself continues to have problems. No one should come ot it expecting Tolstoy's novel and its moving wisdom. When Prokofiev was composing the opera in the mid-Forties, his inspiraiton was variable. The great Fifth Sym. had just been written in the sumemr of 1941, but that was his last indisputable masterpiece. "War and Peace" contains a feeble Overture, included here by Gergiev but omitted whenever he stages the opera. There are patriotic choruses straight out of Soviet wartime propaganda, clearly aimed at Hitler more than Napoleon. And in general the melodic inspiration falls well short of Romeo and Juliet--the more delicate music, of which there is a lot on CD 1, sounds like outtakes from Prokofiev's fitfully inspired Cinderella ballet.

War and Peace works best if you have seen its epic spectacle onstage, so I sympathize with the reviewers who recommend the DVD instead. Coming to the work cold, with no visual memories of Moscow burning, Natasha's delirious dancing at the ball, Napoleon in retreat with half an army onstage, a listener may get fairly bored. Prokofiev found a middle-of-the-road idiom that has few pinnacles, presumably because of the daunting four hours of stage business he had to compose for. As a work of craft, War and Peace is admirable, but without the epic spectacle, its musical thinness shows thorugh.

1 out of 5 stars War and peace Gergiev.......2004-06-04

Good but not the best. Try rather the Chandos version. Voices are better. Another great version (not complete) is the Melik-Patchayev one. A good old version.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the DVDs instead.......2004-01-02

I wrote the first of the customer reviews here, warning potential buyers about the sound. As it is now possible to buy Gergiev's Kirov performance on DVDs, I would recommend doing that, if you must have a Russian version, or buying the TDK DVDs of the outstanding Paris production. In consequence, I re-rate these over-priced Philips CDs 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable performance, and Complete too.......2002-02-25

Although the recording level is too low as established by others reviewing this work/recordings, I have to point out that the dramatic quality is stronger than others. I have the Hickox and like it a little less than this. The Rostropovich is very fine, BUT the singing/acting is weak, the orchestral playing is great. The Bolshoi sets ie: Alexander Melik-Pashaev and Mark Ermler are outstanding in performance and recording, but they are edited versions. Although I have heard the Janssen set I haven't analyzed it clearly, since I do not own it. For a complete version I strongly recommend the Gergiev performance. The acting and conducting is superior to the Hickox performance if one can forgive the low sound recording. I found myself a bit bored at times while listening to the Hickox upon its broadcast before the CD issueing. I did buy it since it is stronger than the Rostropovich, but it lacks a solid continuity of drama between soloists. The Gergiev performance treats every scene with care and understood performance which I don't always find in other performances. It is live and does fail on the attempts of the engineers, but what does that have to do with the artists performance? It is all round complete and more satisfactory than its rival Spoleto performance under Hickox.

3 out of 5 stars Recorded sound quality not up to Phillips standards.......2000-09-21

I would like to amplify upon a point made by a previous reviewer. The performance does indeed have the mentioned extraneous noises associated with the live performance, but I find that the real shortfall is simply the recorded sound quality, which is somewhat lacking in clarity, spaciousness, and dynamic range. Apparently the engineering used for the recording was not the best. Recorded sound quality of live performances can be marvelous even with footfalls and the occasional audience noises (I am thinking of Elektra with Behrens/Ozawa-Boston Symphony Orchestra on the Phillips label). But this one disappoints to a degree. I give it a few stars anyway for the fine performance.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST VIENNA BOYS CHOIR CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!.......2005-06-01

This wonderful collection of Christmas music is especially good! Many pieces are very well known standards, and have been rewritten in ways that keep the music fresh, interesting and new! Every holiday season (and even throughout the year) this CD is played by our family quite a bit! [I may be a little biased, since my 12 year old son from Cincinnati, OH is one of the boys singing in most of the songs!] It is awesome!!

What stands out most about Chiu's playing is how clean he plays. He really makes sure that he plays everything correctly and in a well-defined manner.

I'm not sure whether these pieces were composed before their orchestral counterparts, but you can recognize the famous melodies.

Occassionally, one has to smile at the wit displayed in these pieces. The odd ending, the surprise chord.

5 out of 5 stars Frederick Chiu Profoundly Understands Prokofiev .......2004-10-11

Frederick Chiu has recorded most of, if not ALL of the piano works of Prokofiev. His performances of "Cinderella", and "Romeo & Juliette" are immensely gratifying! I can not imagine a finer performance! Every line and nuance is made with heart and intelligence. I have listened to his interpretation many times and it is always deeply poetic and technically perfect. This artist is one of the GREAT performing pianists of this decade. His understanding seems to be based on an exquisite feeling for the music and he expresses those feelings in a very powerful way through his unexcelled performance on the piano. Thank you Mr. Chiu for your gift to us.

5 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful & Better than I Thought.......2006-08-01

I bought this CD out of curiosity. A few dozen violas produce an immense breadth of sound. Add to this some high-level playing, plus a variety of pieces. A wonderful way to explore the instrument.

5 out of 5 stars The best of large group viola.......2002-07-11

This is a most unique collection of works. The mellow but sonorous sound that is unique to the viola is amplified 48 times - nothing else does tribute to the viola like this recording. This is the BEST recording for viola that I've ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Violins and 'celli. Who needs 'em??.......1999-08-08

A delightful exercise in orchestration, this recording features 48 violas from the major London orchestras in numbers ranging from Gershwhin to Bacharach to Faure. With the exception of some percussion here and there, a harp and the occasional string bass, these selections are NOTHING but violas.

4 out of 5 stars brilliant performances, but not quite perfect.......2002-03-22

There is a wealth of great music on this disc, and all at an unbelievable price. The set does not start brilliantly, with a sonata set that sounds as though it has been recorded in his front room. Some of the playing is a bit woolly, but you can tell that his heart is there, especially in the 6th sonata, where the sparks positively fly. For my taste, the 8th starts off way too slow, and the exciting close of the first movement is too fast with way too much pedal, losing all detail. His antipathy towards the 1st sonata is obvious from the sleeve notes, and he plays it rather aggressively.
The sonata recordings come from the beginning of his recording career, and it becomes evident that his control has improved over time. The next disc, entitled `early fame' has an absolutely stonking `suggestion diabolique', the best I have heard on record, and his `toccata' is electric. His `sarcasms' are truly frightening, and the `juvenilia' provide a fascinating insight into the development of Prokofiev's piano music. There is a disc of violin and piano music in this set, and this is good, although I find myself wishing that Pierre Amoyal's tone were not so thin.
The pricing of this set confuses me, in the UK, these discs are available individually at full price, yet I bought the whole set at super budget price, and it is advertised as a super budget set. I was not initially pleased with this set, but I am now so glad that I bought it; it has opened my ears to so much wonderful piano music. I would have liked the inclusion of the fragment of the 10th sonata, though.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25

I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.

I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.

The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).

As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.

One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.

I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13

I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

This boxset has 5 parts:

-Sonatas box: Instrumental and chamber music. 5 CDs including sonatas for violin(s), sonatas for piano, piano and cello, piano and flute. Music for childen, and a quintet (G minor)
-Concertos box: 4 CDs. Including concertos for violin(no1 and 2), for piano, symphony-concerto for cello.
-Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112
-Stage works and Films scores: 6 CDs. Romeo and Juliet, Peter and the wolf, Alexander Nevsky, Scythian Suite, The Prodigal Son, Cinderella, The love for three oranges...
-War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.

There is no question about the quality:
-Sound: 5 stars
-Performers technique: 5 stars
-Boxes and color: 5 stars
-Price: $7/CD is acceptable.

Finally, I would like to use Sviatoslav Prokofiev's words: "This Anniversary boxset is a most impressive testimony to the interest my father's music arouse among artists, orchestras and audiences alike."

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Recording of a Russian Masterpiece.......2007-01-11

I love this opera. It's so spralling and a bit flawed but it never fails to wipe me out. Rostropovitch promised Prokofiev to keep this work alive and champion performing it complete. This concert version from 1986 is, I believe, note complete. It's a magnificent recording achievment with a strong cast and clearly the first choice as a recording. Rostropovitch's tempi always tend to be slow but that brings out the rich and complicated orchestration better and his wife, legendary Russian soprano Galina Vischneskaya is past her prime but she still sings beautifully in one of her most famous roles. The rest of the cast is first rate and robust sounding. The choral work is thrilling.

Of the three available recordings, and I'm familiar with the other two, this is clearly the recording to have. There's an historical connection here that's not to be ignored. And I really believe, the score is complete. Thre's certainly extended choral work that I've never heard before.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect War & Peace.......1999-07-19

This version of the monumental work of Prokofiev is simply wonderful. Galina Vishnevskaya and Lajos Miller (Natasha and Andrej) are the best of the disc. Nicola Ghiuselev is a very strong, and patriotic, Marshal Kutuzov. Wieslaw Ochman is not a Gedda (Anatoly in this recording), but the dramatism of his interpretation is a fine work. Gedda sing again with Vishnevskaya (Boris, Lady Macbeth, etc.) and the results are wonderful. But the best of the recording is Mstislav Rostropovich, a director who knows how play the russian repertory. In minor roles: Michel Senechal like Monsieur de Boësset, Mariana Paunova (strong Akhrossimova), Dimiter Petkov (Boris in the "Lady Macbeth" of EMI), and Nathalie Stutzmann and Catherine Dubosc. "War and Peace" is a dense work (four hours), but the scenes are a fine picture of the Napoleon's invassion. The first half of the opera is concentrated in the figure of Natasha (Peace), and the second half is the invassion (War); in this part the males roles have more importance. In resume, a wonderful recording, with a marathonic cast, but the four hours are like two. P. S. : Sorry for my english.

4 out of 5 stars An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent performance and recording of new works..........1999-10-20

Jarvi and the Philharmonia have another winner with this one, especially the War and Peace and the Summer Night pieces. The opening of this CD is quite simply spectacular, with the opening cymbal-clash/trumpet-volley spine-tinglingly clear. Jarvi goes on to do Palmer's arrangement of Prokofiev's opera proud, and the op. 123 suite from "the Duenna" is just as beautifully done, with Jarvi coaxing some incredibly sensuous sounds out of the Philharmonia in the fourth section of the suite, "Dreams." The Russian Overture is not quite as interesting melodically, but Jarvi and his orchestra obviously enjoy playing it and they make the most of its often discursive structure. The recording is, once again, in the demonstration bracket, and the performances are superb. This CD is a must-buy for any Prokofiev (or hi-fi) fan.
